How i fixed the YotaPhone2 e-ink screen problems - YotaPhone

Hi,
many of Yotaphone 2 users complain about their e-ink screens, that are not completly black if needed, too grainy or some fading different bars of grey (a scale of w-b rainbow) instead of one shade of black screen.
Others complain about ghosts problem.
There are some advices to fix the problems like:
- to uncharge the battery to 0% and keep discharged for few days,
- to downgrade Android to version 4.
Sometimes it helped sometimes not. In my case that did not solve e-ink problems at all. I have tested androids 4,5,6 and few times discharged the battery and left it so even for a week.
When i came to terms with a problematic e-ink screen and decided not to bother my head with this anymore, the solution came
One evening i took my YP2 to my pocket, plugged earphones and went for running for about 30 minutes. The phone was jumping and shaking in a pants' pocket (which is not tight) during my run.
I got back home, leaved the phone on the table for the night (even not looking at it) and the next morning there was a big surprise, a perfectly black e-ink screen. No shades, no bars, no ghosts. It has been working perfectly for a week now and i hope this fact will not change
Try it and give here response if my advice help you or not.
My YP2 is chinese YD206 changed with Android 6.0.1 RU version (1.1.47) to YD201.
Best regards,
Peter.

Hi, do you wish to suggest mechanical shock helped the display to settle into a uniform state? Considering that the EPD does involve an electromechanical mechanism for changing states, yet it's practicality is uncertain.

^ I think he means sweat, I'll dump my phone in to the sea, expect reports in 10 hours
My "broken" line appeared after running battery tests on different roms, so I think heat causes it. So far I have not seen any reports of fixing e-ink screens with thise kinds of problems. My kobo reader is perfect after almost 6 years.

Yes, mechanical shock was exactly what had helped with the epd problem.
I know that seems to be wird but it really helped. My EPD was not functioning properly since purchasing the phone as new one about 6 months ego.
Non of advices available on the Internet did not help. Maybe there was some poor connection on some electrical terminal of EPD until mechanical shock improved the connection or something like that.
I am really curious if my notification on EPD problems is going to help other poeple who strugled to solve their EPD problems in vain.
Just wait and see.

I have to add that now i really like my phone. The dark theme is awesome!

I drive scooter on bumpy road and it has no effect on my e-ink "dead" line.

I am afraid dead line is more serious problem and requires display replacement. I never had dead lines problem. My EPD problems were: ghosting, too grainy, too bright and b-w rainbow scale in the background instead of one shade. Dark theme was unreadable, white theme was better but still not perfect.

My Yotaphone developed dead lines yesterday, and I'm not inclined to use it anymore. It's difficult to understand that the feature they romanticized the most, is inherently flawed.

Video of Hermes problems... please watch and let me know your opinion?

Hey all,
I've read these forums, and am 90% sure I have a defective Hermes. However, I'm unsure, as these forum posts were just text, and therefore can't really accurately describe the problems being seen. So, I made a YouTube video showing a couple of my issues, especially the screen fading to white. Like I say, I'd just like confirmation, and I'd like this post and video to serve as a help to others who are wondering if they have the same problem. You know what they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words .
Here are more details of my problems, in no particular order:
o The buttons reset after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen fade problem resets itself after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen calibration issue (not shown in video) seems to last a little longer sometimes. The issue is that calibration gets a little off. It seems to be by 10-20 pixels, but I can't repeat this as readily as the screen fade.
o This has happened with and without a memory card inserted.
o I've tried two different batteries, with the same results.
o I've tried three different firmwares (original, WM5 update, WM6 Black 2.0).
o The battery quick powerdown issue has only happened to me once (battery drains 10% every minute).
Here's the link to the video. It's only 84 seconds, so take a peek!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQWqTkoMX_4
Let me (and others) know your thoughts. It'd be appreciated.
PS... about the screen calibration...
FYI, I know about the screen calibration issues some have had wth the Hermes. However, I don't think this is that problem, since I never, ever have to recalibrate my phone. It always corrects itself eventually.

This has been documented HEAVILY in the wiki and the forums so I wont answer that.
The rest seems VERY weird indeed especially the screen going white?!?!
Is it still in warranty because I would so send it to be repaired.
Not seen anything like that on any forum. Are you keeping it somewhere hot or near an e.m. field just before use?
What additional apps have you installed? Do these problems still occur with an "empty" phone (i.e. right after a hard reset before installing third party apps)? If so then that should rule out software and firmware (ROM).

I agree, the screen going white is similar to when I had my O2 XDA EXEC (HTC Universal) in which whenever I moved the lcd into the mini laptop mode the screen would fade to pure white. When I sent it into PPC Tech they notified me saying in which the lcd cable was damaged itself. Im not sure if thats the case with you necesarily, since it seems the screen goes back to normal after powering the device to standby and back.
The keys are most likely software/rom issues. Perhaps maybe you should reflash to a recent rom and see what happens. Although if that doesnt work I suggest you send in for replacement or warranty. I neeever in the 6 months I had my phone did I ever have problems like the one you've listed.
::EDIT::
I just realized I saw that you tried multiple roms, if thats the case I realllly believe you have a defective phone. It does happen that one in a hundred tend to go bad..
Had similar occurance when mine had gotten damp.
fading screen and hardware buttons
Hi,
I've reported some time ago these issues, they started with LVSW Edition (2007-03-20) and after that Pro - BLACK 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and still with 3.01.
I don't think is hardware related. i happens in random way. No specific apps or time or connection.
I've had similar issues with the buttons not working on my 8525. It seems to have to do with changing in and out of landscape mode. For example, I'll always have problems if I reset the phone and leave it in landscape mode and I always have to push the keyboard in and pull it back out to get everything working right.
If the buttons DO work, they are usually wrong, like up and down will instead move left to right. Again, pushing in and pulling out the keyboard fixes it for me. I recently upgraded to a new ROM and couldn't say if the problem persists or not.
As for the white screen issue - I'd say it's FUBAR'd.

My experience with the infamous Shield Tablet... Also a question for other owners.

I bought this thing first off of Amazon, and it was backordered... So I canceled and ordered from Newegg. Fine, i have to pay for shipping, and wait longer, but whatever.
I get the tablet, so excited, and i notice first that the screen would switch orientation when it shouldn't have. Like if i have it in landscape, then lay it flat on it's back, it would go into portrait. This could be recreated every time, so it wasn't just a fluke. I installed Asphalt 8 Airbourn and tried to play. I held the tablet flat, then all of a sudden when the car took off, it took a sharp right and ran straight into a wall.
Great... the accelerometer is broke. Also i can see the backlight flickering a little bit.
I request an RMA from Newegg and they said it'd take probably about a week to get it back. Get it processed, about to go take it back and check their site to see if it's in stock still and it's sold out. I get on their chat to make sure and they said it's backordered, so i'd have to wait for it to come in or switch it to a refund. So i switched it to a refund and by that time, Microcenter in my area had them in stock so i dropped by and picked one up.
Go it home and it was acting fine, until i installed Asphalt again and then it ran the car into the wall again... Also, again, i can see the backlight flickering. Starting to get depressed, i contact Nvidia asking if this is a common problem and then they said it was the first they'd heard of it. They tried Riptide GP2 and said it worked fine on their test tablet. So i bought Riptide GP2 with my Google Opinion Rewards and tried it, the little water craft ran straight into the wall, just like the first tablet. They told me to try exchanging it again, and that they were sorry that i was having trouble.
I go back to microcenter, demonstrate what is happening, they give me a new tablet and tell me to install the game and test to see if this one does it before i leave with it. Their wifi was being crappy, so they gave me a USB Ethernet adapter and an OTG cable to connect to their Internet (it worked instantly, freaking awesome.)
Install updates, install app updates, install the game, it works... Finally have one that the Accelerometer works... I leave and go home, and the screen still flickers on this one too.... So thats the question part of this post, does anyone else have this tablet and notice the backlight flickering? It happens more often on darker brightness settings.
Other than the problems trying to get a working tablet, and the screen flickering, i love this tablet. The screen is really sensitive though, so when you're holding it and trying to hit edge of the screen, and you're barely touching somewhere else, it'll usually give you a hard time. The stylus is awesome, the screen can be very bright and easy to see out in the sun. The 1080p is a noticeable different over my 2013 N7 ( i can see the pixels in this tablet, i have very sensitive eyes and the ability to see very fine details) but it's still a great screen. the battery life at least for me is not as good as the 2013 N7, however it does make it through the day.
anyways... TL;DR: Love this tablet, had a pain in the ass of a time getting one that worked though. Also, does anyone notice the screen's backlight flickering like i do?
is it a continuous flicker or is it just slight changes in brightness when the screen content changes? there is a known "feature" called prism that does some kind of auto/dynamic brightness/contrast adjustment depending on whats showing on screen. there's a thread over at geforce.com about it. apparently it was introduced in a prior update on the other shield devices too so im hopeful its fixed. if its a true flicker and not just brightness changes, then its either defective or the backlight is pwm and you can see it. some people are sensitive to pwn backlights on regular computer monitors and can see the flicker. google pwm backlight if you're unfamiliar with the phenomenon.
It happens when the screen content changes, and i figured it'd be some kind of dynamic change.
it also happens when the screen has the content on screen constant. It's sort of like a pulse, sometimes it also gets bad for a split second. I don't really know how to explain it. it will be pulsing, then it will have a bad flicker then go back to pulsing. It gets worse the darker you make the brightness, and also when you turn on autobrightness (although im sure this makes it worse because it's trying to adjust the brightness in dark light).
I looked up the pwm backlight and it looks like it's mostly with LED backlights. Thats my guess of the backlight on this tablet. That makes sense though, because i can see a VERY VERY slight pluse on my work's Macbook Pro, and a slight pluse on my Nexus 5 too. I suppose that this might be the case.
I just don't see it being a defect because i've had three of them, from two different vendors and they've all done the exact same thing with the backlight.
I haven't noticed any screen flicker.
I am also comparing this forum with the N7 (2013) forum when it first came out.
Lots of people there seemed to have troubles getting a good one -- light leaks, touch screen issues (there were several firmware updates for this), dead pixels, etc.
At least so far, there seems to be fewer people (per captia) complaining here.
Speaking of touchscreen issues, I did notice something about my Shield Tablet...
I was using it in the evening, while connected to a charger. I suddenly had a terrible time typing. I had just installed Thumb Keyboard, so I thought that was the problem. Went back to the Google Keyboard. Still had trouble. Scrolling web pages was also slow/erratic. Reboot -- same thing.
The next day I took it to work -- lots of email, including lots of typing.. general usage, etc. --- all with no problem. Back at home in the evening, some games, Google+ (typing) -- no problem.
Later on I was surfing eBay, and again I could not type or scroll without a lot of problems.
I turned on Settings --> Developer options --> Show touches and --> Pointer location.
With my finger steady on the screen, it was showing lots of erratic movement, particularly in the vertical axis. Several mm of vertical error, and about 1mm horizontal. Sometimes clearly below the entire area my finger covered.
Then I realized that both times it happened I was connected to the charger (Travel Surge protector with 2 -- 2.1A(shared) USB outlets).
I disconnected the charger, and the problem went away.
Connected the charger, and after a few seconds, the problem returned.
I was using the included cable, and another 2.1A rated charger.
I changed to a different 2.1A rated charger, and did not have the problem.
Different cable, 1st charger -- No problem.
The problem is reproducible (although not always) only with the 2.1A travel surge protector, and the included NVidia cable.
I noticed that this thing will charge at nearly 2A. The included cable is quite long (as compared to the other cables I have laying around), but is not thinker. In fact it is thinner than other USB cables.
It's really too small a wire guage to run almost 2A for that length.
It is marked with the Shield symbol (Like the controller or the Shield Portable), and came wrapped in a thing that said "Use with", and the Shield controller symbol.
Was the wrong cable in my box?
How are other peoples cables marked?
Has anyone else noticed an erratic touch screen if you use it while charging?
Mine is marked the same as yours. I just notice the screen keeps poping on while it is charging for no reason.

Yeah, there are a lot of devices that will freak out when you're using different chargers. I was going to tell you to go back to the Nvidia cable and charger that were included with the device to see if that fixes it, but it looks like you've found out that the charger was the issue.
I'm still unable to tell if it's the PWM Backlighting method that was brought up earlier or not. I can't get anyone else to see it though, and after three devices, i'm starting to feel like it's something that is normal.

Same thing happens with mine. While charging the screen will frequently come back on and then go off again in a few seconds. I haven't noticed the behavior when it's not charging. It's almost like something is running in the background causing it to wake up when charging.

I've noticed it slightly in low brightness but not as bad as the Tegra3 based N7 and TF700t. I'm guessing it has to do with prism if that's the case.
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet
Screen "Flicker" is the auto brightness, try changing to a manual brightness. I have noticed the orientation is very sensitive, sometimes when sitting down or moving a bit it will flip orientation on me, seems overly sensitive, whereas ive used other tablets that were not sensitive enough. Sounds like you may have had a few bad ones but the screen "issue" seems to be common, the light sensor seems to be overly sensitive (assuming changing to manual brightness resolves your case).

I haven't noticed any type of flickering on my TN7 or my new shield tablet. This could partially be because most of the time i have the brightness setting to manual. Its seems as when i have it on auto the screen is just a little too dim for me. Although, when using the tablet outside i usually have it on auto and the screen chooses the correct brightness so it can be best viewed.
As I mentioned, I haven't seen anything I would call a "flicker", but I am glad someone mentioned the auto brightness.
To me, the auto brightness seems a bit "hyper" -- too much gain.
A slight change in orientation to or away from room lighting causes a drastic change in screen brightness.
The same for a shadow from my thumb if I hold the tablet in landscape.
I guess it could cause a flicker, but it depends on the context of timing --- Kinda like "the dinosaurs died out quickly", vs. "the quark decayed quickly".
Also I want it to be clear that I am not complaining about my Shield Tablet. It's just that xda-forums are a place where things are discussed in minute detail. It is not a problem, issue or complaint.
I have no interest at all in using my Nexus 7 (2013) (or any other Tablet) since I got my Shield Tablet.
The weak wifi appears to be the priority focus Nvidia is now giving the tablet. Question is will they go into denial mode like Asus did with the T700, or address early and revise the design IF needed. Sales were badly impacted for the T700 and a high return rate, per Best Buy.
Hopefully a simple firmware fix, but weak wifi is almost always antenna related for devices like this.

I don't think any of the shield tablets I've used so far have had Wi-Fi problems.
I have a similar issue. Check it out here:

Tell me about it. Its been like that since I first turned the tab on 3 days ago. Nvidia refuses to acknowledge my issue and insists I pay return shipping and a restocking fee. I don't understand why I should pay more than every other customer just to get a properly working device. Nvidia has pushed me away from sticking with this tablet.
The flickering when the content changes is probably Nvidia's PRISM at work. Basically, it tries to optimize brightness and colour so that power usage is reduced.
Instead of maxing the backlight and telling the pixels to display dark grey, it dims the backlight and tells the pixels to display light grey, saving power.
It is an advanced form of autobrightness, and I think it can be disabled. But a continuous flickering should not be caused by this. This should happen only when the screen is refreshed.. like new page or picture

Yotaphone 2 ereader screen problem

I have yotaphone 2 from tinydeal germany. (I think they flash the ROM to change the language.)
The phone worked fine at first but now the e screen on the back is doing strange things, leaving images of previous pages showing through the current page. This means, for example, on the clock face the clock is faint on a grey background and as the fingers move they leave a black after-image. Pages that should be black look speckled grey. Any suggestions for cause and a fix?
Unfortunately this is how (older) EPD screens work. When updated they somtimes leave a ghost image behind. To eliminate this the screen needs to be flashed white/black/white before redrawing and with the low refresh frequency of EPD this results in a very flickering image. So there is nothing wrong with your screen, this is just how EPD screens work. See also here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_paper#Disadvantages
Thanks, but this ghosting or layered imaging is much more severe. I know someone else with the same phone where black is black and whilst there is very slight ghosting of things like clock fingers it is nothing like this current phone. The phone was fine when we got it, and the layered/grey imaging has started without me doing anything. I only mentioned flashing of the ROM because Tinydeal have told me that that is what they do to change the language on these phones.
So from the Wikipedia entry and your comments I now assume that the phone should automatically flash black/white between page changes but it isn't doing it.
The ghost images don't appear if you load something like chess or sudoko onto the rear display but appear again as soon as the regular Yotapanel or Yotacover is used.
I have the same problem, but only when the white theme in the Yotahub is turned off (so the dark theme is active) or when I use the Yota Mirror. The ghosting is terrible. When I use the white theme, it looks like it should look. I am not aware of any changes I made to my phone yesterday, but in the afternoon this problem started.
Does someone know how to check if the screen is flashing/refreshing correctly and if not, how to repair this?
Update: when I put a completely black screen on the back, it is spotty. The black is not black, but dark grey, and there are many lighter spots on the screen.
Update 2: the white theme has this problem too, but less visible. The white starts as real white, but because of ghosting becomes slightly grey. With black it is much more noticeable, because black does start as dark grey.
Well this may only turn out to be a temporary fix but I went through the Yotapanel pages repeatedly and very rapidly using the bottom of the page buttons.
I got all sorts of shades of grey and multiple overlying images but then the phone suddenly showed a clear black and white page with clock.
Ringing the phone from another phone produced a clear missed call message on the back of the phone and then after a minute the clear black and white clock page came back. I am leavng the phone without looking at all the othe Yotapanels or the Yotacover for the moment in the hope that something just got out of phase in the software and the phone might now settle down to correct operation again.
I have the same problem. It has started a few days ago and it gets worse every day.
Unfrtunately the problem has returned on my phone although I was able to get back to a black screen with the clock after three page changes using the bottom left arrow. This time a missed call message came up very clearly on the back of the phone but after the missed call message cleared the whole of the back of the phone was speckled grey with a very faint clock image. One question though: is this just the phones from Tinydeal where they have apparently flashed the ROM, or is it all phones?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lggfc.nookclearscreen
That's the app for Nook ereader to refresh its screen and get rid of ghosting. Works also on Yotaphone.
What always works for me to clear the screen when the ghosting annoys me is to switch to Android on the EPD screen (by holding the circle button and choosing the left option) and switch back right away using the same procedure. This always leaves me with a clean black back.
Thanks Keeper and VirtualL.
Tinydeal asked me to upload a video to demonstrate the fault, and no sooner than they did that the phone started behaving normally again!
So if it goes again the first thing I will try is that page sequence, and if it fails the App.
I have to say that these are really fantastic phones. I think that a lot of original reviewers completely overlooked the basic issue of not being able to see a phone screen in bright sunlight, but that the yotaphone overcomes this problem.
Resolved by switching the back to front screen views a couple of times. Getting the front screen to mirror on the back seems to give that hard black and white interscreen flash that clears previous images.

Last week, I got a chinese version (YD206) through GearBest. I had the same problem what you mentioned. (Black was always Grey and was never black and lot of ghosting). Until yesterday, I used to think that's how the e-Ink display works so I was using White theme all the time.
After seeing your post, I tried using Nook cleaner software and it did not help. Then, I removed the screen protector which the phone came with. For the next 1 hour, I did not see any difference. I left it thinking it could be ROM issue.
But, after few hours, I noticed everything became normal. Now, the e-ink screen looks goergeous in BLACK.

What always works for me to clear the screen when the ghosting annoys me is to switch to Android on the EPD screen (by holding the circle button and choosing the left option) and switch back right away using the same procedure. This always leaves me with a clean black back.

This issue keeps coming back and I am not able to find a guaranteed solution to this.
Like you described, activating and deactivating Yota Mirror in quick succession clears the ghosting and makes the screen BLACK. At other times, it does not work at all.
I even try swapping to different Yota Panels, but it is a hit and miss. Is this issue specific to Chinese version of YD206?
How to solve this issue permanently?
If not possible, is there any known step which I can do to clear the ghosting?

I have the same problem with a GearBest YD206 running Android 4.4.3. Would updating the firmware change anything?
Hey Yotaphone Users!
I finally have a solution for this problem, that I received from the Yota Phone Support:
"If you see that ghosting is amplified, try to do some steps. Try to discharge the phone completely. Then leave it discharged for long periods of time, f.e. overnight. Then charge the phone to 100%."
For me that worked perfectly!
For me the discharge-recharge didn't work at all.
Discharged untill it switched off. Turned it on again untill switched off, untill phone wouldn't start up again. So: battery was flat.
What happened was: EPD turned black. Yohoo! Happy!
But: after one night discharged, i put it on charger again. Screen switched on, and ghosting was immediately back.
Disappointed. Very disappointed.
Anyone has a different solution?

Sad to hear that.
Did you remove the screen protector from the back side as in the post #14 the user said that after removing the epd screen became normal black again?
Has anyone heard and try heating with hairdryer the EPD screen for 2 minutes (not too hot) to eliminate ghosting?

Artefacts on the screen

Hello everyone,
Got a problem with my Galaxy note 3 amoled screen. Couple months ago some lines appeared on that, look like artefacts or dead pixels or something, not really sure. Didn't drop/drop in water the device before that. No idea why that happen. But, they don't go.
Tried some dead pixels apps from market with no success.
Due to certain reasons cannot give the device to repair service, so, need to try to fix that by myself.
OS version is 4.3, if that matters.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Will attach the screenshot. The line in the middle. Have few of them already. Background is green, to make it more visible.
Thanks!

Looks more like heat damage to the screen adhesive than a software/electronic defect, to me. I'm just guessing here, but could it have been left in a spot where a beam of focused light could burn the screen? Mine has a few little defects on the screen from where a water bottle on a window ledge focused the sunlight onto a point on the screen.
factory reset.
Flash stock rom and see .
Thanks for replies guys,
One more thing I probably should mention,
The line on the attached pic is maximized, the real lines are quite small, like 3-5mm length. Really small. But anyway visible...
Jaitsu,
Hmm tried to recall but don't think something like that happened. Sometimes I use my phone as GPS when riding bike, means it's outside under the sun (but not a focused light or something), max. 1 hour per time. Could that be reason?
Also, did you find any way to fix that, by yourself?
I read about several ways to fix screen issues, including leaving phone without battery for some time, or even placing it into the freezer. Tried battery method yesterday with no result, but kind of worry about the freezer...

Yes factory reset is a common advice but you really think it might help? Looks like a hardware issue to me. Can a software glitch damage the display? Also, lines are everywhere on the screen, not like one certain place.
Will give it a try if nothing else found, just, sounds uncommon...
Agree probably hardware but a factory reset rules out firmware .
Thats the first step for a service tech sheet .

LeEco Pro 3 Display

I have this beautiful and powerful phone LeEco Pro 3 that i`ve been using for half an year or so with AOSIP ROM. Its a wonderful phone with an amazing performance.
The thing is my display started a problem history that has become a long history i will try to resume in a few words.
It started in one day i pressed the power button in order to light the display on and check something in an APP i needed. I found out that before the display lighted on some weird colors and artifacts appeared on screen. But indeed the display worked fine.I thought it was just a temporary thing and just kept using it until In the second day that the weird colors and artifacts became permanent, so i realized i was in trouble. :crying:
Tried sending the phone to technical assistance.
The first one - Told me that they could get a new display for testing but indeed the results were the same and they were seeing oxidation in the display connector on the board, not the display flex cable but the main board connection. They said they would not go further into it and they decided to give the phone back to me. Weird thing is that when i turned the phone one it worked for one day without issues. He said the phone was in the same condition, but that is not what i saw. The problem indeed happened again one day later , but it was less worse as i could at least see the screen, but almost half the screen was horribly shaking, trembling.
The second one - Once the tech guy looked the phone he said he didnt see any sign of the phone getting opened. He said he would be seeing signs of glues or anything like that but in his opinion it was definitely not opened. But he warned me the display could physically brake once he opens it as the phone got contact with oxidation in the toilet(I used to left it in the toiled while i take bath). So i was afraid and decided to back off.
The third one - Said he could not find any display so he sent the phone back to me. Didnt open it at all as he was trying to wait for the new display to arrive in order to be safe. They said they are 90% sure its display replacement would do the job. The thing is - if i used in hot environments the issues seems to slowly disappear . If i use it in cold environments the problems seems to get worse
So here i am. I CAN buy another screen over the internet. But i am afraid if it will work or not. Have anyone there faced same issue? What do you recommend me to do? What would you do
Thanks in advance

There are many many post on this subject, recently in fact. That has links. In fact, you can find them on Alibaba that are all black and made specifically for the Le Pro 3. Here is a link of a guy who used the cool s1 display
Yes it sounds like the display or the flex cables.
Link 1
Here you go cheap and they have the black one
