That is actually now google assistant. Hold the home button and when the box comes up say "ok Google" that is assistant. Or press the 3 dots at top right for help. If it says "get help with Google assistant" then it's Google assistant not Google now.

Yeah based on this I definitely have Google now... Anyone know how I can get Google assistant? Also why would it be the case that my model does not come with Google assistant?

Maybe not available in your country yet.
When you press the 3 dots at top for menu and press help do you get the same as in this screenshot?

So if I change my country would I get Google assistant? Or is it a firmware issue?

I'm guessing not available in your country

Okay so for people who may encounter the same problem, I tried getting around the issue by installing the play services and Google app beta versions. This didn't really help as trying to activate google assistant in the settings results in a 'English (South Africa) is not supported by Google assistant.' error.
I did try to change the language region etc to the US but this did not help either.
Unless someone can find a workaround then it seems people in regions where assistant isn't supported are gonna have a tough time.
It's worth noting that this phone is advertised (in South Africa) as having Google assistant, which is technically a lie...

Go talk to Google. This isn't an issue with the phone.

Flash a firmware from a different region. That will fix it.

That's weird because i didn't had it on my french S8 so i changed the languague to US ENGLISH and it's working fine, last google assistant update with the ability to type now.

Blaccmamba is right. Just set your default language to English US. I've been using Google Assistant in South Africa for weeks now.

I've set it though that's the weird thing...
What service provider did you get your phone from?

I can confirm that after changing the language to English (US) in 'Settings/General Management/ Language and Input' Google Assistant works correctly. The problem it seems was that I was changing the default language in the Google settings only.

Hi. I have a Galaxy S8 on Sprint in the US and I have the same problem. When I hold the home button, i don't get the screen pictured above in the thread. Instead I get the old Google Now that scams your screen. How do i change this to Assistant?

Download the "google search by voice app" in the market, then watch the video link in my first post to activate
The new update doesn't have Street View. Are they discontinuing the project?
it has streetview im using it now!!
You are right, but it is not an option in the map modes like it was before. You have to long press the map on the location, then a window pops up and there you select street view. Don't really care about that since I am in Canada and there are no street views here yet, at least that is what I think. As for the voice recognition/search function, I do not have that option in the search function. Looked all over the place for it but still can't find it. There is suppose to be a mic beside the google search bar in the Search option. Not there on Rogers Canada network. Hopefully they will fix that soon.

can't find this app, when i search for it, only one app appears and it is google maps which is already installed...
still no voice search for me.
strange.
The Roger HTC Magic (I have one) doesn't appear to have libspeech.so installed - I think that is the missing piece. I am not sure why we don't see the google search by voice app that the others are speaking about.
I'm confused why the voice dialer works - I guess that doesn't use libspeech.so?

When you are in Google Maps, do Menu > Search then select the microphone, which will let you do voice search.

It's close to the same hardware - different frequencies or something for the different carriers. The other difference is each carrier can customize the Android OS they release. Rogers in Canada, for example, released their Android phones with MS Exchange support. But they obviously left some other things out. That's why I want to root my phone so I can put whatever software I want on there.

That's the issue - there's no such button. Missing libspeech.so is the culprit here I believe. And while I have the file from other sources, I don't have root access to the phone, so I can't install it to the lib folder to make it work.
What a pain.. when I try to update mine, I get the message:
"Installation Error: Package file was not signed correctly."
Any suggestions?
I installed the new version of maps but I can't find the voice search option, it's just not there (same as previously reported) i'm on vodafone australia.
Any idea how we can get the voice working?
Well I upgraded the Maps app and have the voice search. It's rubbish! I've tried speeking as clearly as possible but it's all over the place. Searching Edinburgh comes back as Dayton, Ohio, USA everytime Typing is much quicker anyway.
New update of Google Map has been released, v3.1.1
I've updated and retried, it's still rubbish.
Ya not sure what v3.1.1 fixes, there is still no voice search here in Canada yet.

Ok google everywhere.

Hello,

I checked the settings, and ok google everywhere is not avail in my language.

Basically my preferred language was English (Canada), and not USA. Apparently there's a difference. Who knew 'eh?
Got it working once I switched that. Damn Canadians.

Has anyone received the Google Assistant update on their A2017U?

This past week, I've been reading that Google is pushing "Google Assistant" out, to replace the standard "Ok Google", to a bunch of Marshmallow and Nougat phones.
Has anyone received that yet, or know if the Axon 7 is going to get it soon?
Every phone running Android 6.0+ will receive the update but you already knew that. They are running the roll out as we speak but only for English users in US. English users in Australia, Canada and UK and Germany will soon follow. Rest during the course of the year apparently. So if you are in the US you will likely receive it soon or may already have received an update to the app. Hope this clarifies.
I just got the update a few minutes ago! I'm in northern California.

I literally just got it a few minutes ago, Northeast US here. It's extremely quick, I'm impressed.
Yep, you guys prompted me to check mine, and I have it too!
I hate it. I use long press for Google Now to search like a hundred times a day. Now it is the Assistant and I see no way of typing my query. So now I have no way to do a search in one step. Anything I can do to get it back the way it was? Or a way to get a text field into Google Assistant?
yes!.. its working for me.. but..
dont know how it started working?
dont know where it the got the update from?
dont know where to check the update?... can someone pls help me find the answer?
use to use the long home press to check screen search.. disabled it today and thought because i disabled it, the assistant got kicked in.
Happy its working now coz the only reason wanted to get the pixel is for the assistant. this is great!
It seems like Google just doesn't want me to have assistant lol

I can force my phone to set up the Google Assistant, naturally, by removing my account and clearing data from the Google App, Play Services, and Play Store, and then holding the home button > then adding my account. But as soon as I back out of the assistant it goes back to On Tap.
How do you update, is this an upgrade to Google home? Presume this is not available to the Chinese version?

If you have the correct Google app, you already have Assistant. It just wasn't enabled yet. I don't know exactly how it works, but the app sees that you're on Marshmallow or higher in your build.prop and enables it. I currently have a Nexus 6p and before Google decided to enable it for all phones over 6.0, devs figured out that changing a couple of lines in the build.prop tricked the app to think the phone was a Pixel, thus enabling Assistant.

I found those instructions weeks ago but I'm not rooted and there's no option to add languages so I'm screwed. The update also made do not disturb mode turn on 24/7 unless I completely disable it. What a load of BS.

I feel your pain bro. I hate this fact. I'm still using the Pixel launcher which has the search widget for text. I find myself going to the home screen to do my Google searches. It's horrible.

I'm using Nova so I set it up so that pressing home (once home) or swiping up on the drawer icon takes me to search. Yeah it really sucks to have to go to the home screen. That damn assistant sucks. It forgets my voice training after awhile too and I have to do it again.
I have on my G version, I don't know for sure, but I got so fed up waiting, I tried changing my language to US, rebooted the phone and bam! Within 10 seconds I had it. Also I had updated to the latest google play services. I had done this a million times but nothing happened until the language change. Coincidence?

A2017G 7.1.1 Google assistant?

Is it possible to get Google assistant on this ROM?
Sent from my ZTE A2017G using Tapatalk
Enter beta Verdion from Google app and Google play services, wait a while and update these apps than change your System language to english us and go to homescreen, you normally should have the assistant now, change language back
Even easier, just change the language to English US and reboot

Google had announced this in march it was to be activated first in the US and then followed by the UK and several other countries.
Maybe it'll be 2018 for us.

It doesn't work on the Chinese A2017. Assistant is installed in the Google app but it's still Google home when the ask Google. I think it's because the home button (my voice) only operates when the system language is Chinese. Unless someone writes a piece of code to fix this then it looks like I'm stuffed.
