So i'm a proud new S8 owner. (first ever samsung phone. always been an iphone guy) The idea of the Iris Scanner and Facial Recognition is awesome and from videos i've seen, it makes the unlocking of your phone so much easier. But for the life of me, I can't get either of them to work. Even the fingerprint sensor to work for that matter.
While my phone is in the always-on-display, I click the lock button. That then takes me to the home screen. Should the Facial Recognition or Iris Scanner start working at this point to unlock your phone? I'm only getting the "swipe screen to unlock" option. This never changes.
This seems like an awesome feature, but it's only awesome if it works...
I've tried clearing the iris data and the face data, re entered both 10s of times, restarted my phone. But nothing. What am I doing wrong!?

In settings - lock screen / security you can register the fingerprints... but also set the lockscreen mode. Did you do both?

fingerprints and face are both registered. both are set for the lock type. but i can stare at my screen for an hour and it won't unlock. i don't even get an error or anything. same goes for the fingerprint sensor. no matter how many times i touch it or re position my finger, my phone never unlocks. and i never get an error.
the only option i ever have is "swipe screen to unlock"
Also you can't set up face detection and iris scanner at the same time, it's either face detection OR iris scan. I couldn't understand why my iris scanner set up never worked (after I set face recognition) until finally a message flashed on the screen once.

yes i am aware. but no matter which one is registered and enabled, i still can't use it to unlock.
On AOD you press the home button to get to lock screen.
Then you swipe up and this is when the iris scanner should go active.

First unlock after reboot requires password, subsequent unlocks should work fine, something in the settings? Did you go to screen lock type and set proper slider on?

while on AOD, i can either press the home button twice, or press the lock/unlock button. then it takes me to the screen where it shows any notifications, and the 2 quick app buttons on the bottom left corner and bottom right corner. after a brief second, on the bottom in the middle, i get the text "swipe screen to unlock". once i swipe, it unlocks my phone.
this happens when facial recognition or when iris scanner is enabled as the screen lock type. the phone never recognizes anything other than that swipe. swiping is the only way i can unlock my phone.
It's REALLY fast. I also have a Microsoft Lumia 950, and it has Iris scanner, and it's slow as hell. At least as far as Iris is concerned, you can tell it's in action from the infrared light that goes on, sometimes it is shorter than others (depends on lighting conditions).
Also, if you have a trusted device set up, it's not going to lock with a security feature, so there's no process to unlock it--you're just swiping to remove the screen.

it seems so easy! i see all the videos for it and it's extremely fast and hassle free. but i literally can't get ANYTHING other than just swiping my screen to work. i even have the pattern enabled as well. but all i have to do is swipe to unlock. not very secure...
I have iris scanner and pattern set up. When I swipe up I get the pattern entry field in the lower part of the screen and 2 circles for the iris scan in the upper part.

What is your current unlock method? Swipe, pattern, pin, or password? If your unlock method is swipe, it will not ask for any biometric verification.
Have you ever thought about smart unlock? Your phone will remain unlocked if connected to a designated Bluetooth device or location. I have a smart watch and it's amazing. I've stopped bothering with the finger print sensor.

i just factory reset my phone to see if it was something in the settings i wasn't seeing....no luck. my current unlock type is pattern, along with face recognition. but i don't even get asked for a pattern. just swipe and it unlocks.
Are you sure that you've selected to unlock your phone with facial or fingerprint? It does you no good if you just add your biometrics but fail to enable them.
Go to Lock Screen and Security > and then under Screen lock type is should list;
"Pattern, Fingerprints, Face", for example.
Your fingerprints should work with the screen fully off if enabled. You might want to also check that you dont have other apps interfering with your device like Greenify.
Are both the sliders at the bottom enabled for you?

I hate lock screens so I disable them. If the fingerprint reader were better I'd seriously consider using it to unlock the phone, but it isn't.
My problem now is the "second" lock screen on this phone. Not sure if this is an andorid thing or an EUI thing, since I haven't used android 6.0+ before.
Essentially, I need my home screen to appears when I click the power button. Is that possible? If so, what setting am I missing to disable this screen with the time and camera icon on it?
What is this SECOND LOCK SCREEN?
What issues are you having with Fingerprint? Mine has worked flawlessly.
You have already disabled the block screen on the phone?

So it turns out its just the regular lock screen. The best I can seem to do is set the auto-lock to 30 minutes - this is the maximum time out. This is better, but I want NO lock screen. Does anyone know if this is possible? Some setting I am missing?
I dunno about the fingerprint reader. I'm no apple fan boy but I have to use one for work, and the fingerprint reader on apple devices is far superior, so I'm spoiled with my expectations. The better solution for me is to just get rid of the lock screen.

Ahem the FP of Le Pro 3 or any Android phone out there is far superior because you can unlock the phone even if the screen is off.
Can't find a setting either; if set to none you still have to slide up the lock screen. Other phones I've had remove it all together if set to none.
Finger print sensor on mine seems fine, so i just use that.
Freezing 'System Interface 6.0.1' in Titanium gets rid of lock screen, but has some serious side effects.

This worked for me:
After pressing Power or scanning Finger Print the ``Second Lock Screen´´ pops up, don´t slide to unlock or press any of the icons or ads, instead look for three little pale white dots on upper left corner of display, (they are hard to notice with some wallpapers, specially the included on the phone wallpapers) almost like the ones in some browsers to deploy a menu, press that, and the Locker app should pop up asking you if you want to disable it, press Disable and that should do it!
If you can´t see them try setting a lock screen wallpaper that has solid dark colors on the upper part of the screen.
I don't understand the problem but I've been using this for 1 year

Love the fingerprint unlock locked-screen feature. However, it has it's drawbacks. Can only be activated via - PIN lock. How you set up a pin,and after that it gives you the option to use fingerprint as well.
My question is : how do i use fingerprint only!? No more pin just the finger.
Best part about fingerprint is that you don't have to use the physical button. if the screen is off / locked just hold finger and it opens.
Also. I am now using Action Launcher 3. Super launcher. But it does not allow the function to unlock via fingerprint. Does anybody know if this works ? Where is the setting ?
The pin is used to unlock your sim card, the fingerprint is used to unlock your phone's system. If you don't want any pin code, you can either remove the sim card (well, it will probably be a little bit annoying when you want to call someone ^^), or set the pin code to blank. I don't even know if this is possible, actually.
As phones usually ask pin code before system unlock (fingerprint or other), you probably cannot have a third app that would allow to use fingerprint as pin, as it would have to start before the system. Unless I miss an idea, I think you can't do what you ask.
Figured that it has an automated backup just in case the finger is not recognized . You either get the pin or the pattern. Never just the fingerprint. There is no way around this.
Another question: how do i get the list of apps to go in one single page. Right now With ZenUI launcher there are a few pages. Action launcher 3 has one page (option). ..Is there any way to do this with ZenUI ? I got back to the default launcher from Asus cuz of the fingerprint. it's kinda cool to have it. Even tho Action Launcher 3 is amazing.

Clearly you only assumed things only from the setup screen.
OF COURSE in this phone we only use our fingerprint to unlock the screen. No buttons, No pins, No pattern.
If, that is IF, the phone can't recognize your fingerprint for 5 times in a row (because of wet finger, wrong position, dirty etc) it will then requires a pin or pattern unlock. This is why the setup ask you for your pin/pattern first.
Hi everyone, I was wondering if it were possible to hide seeing my face when using the iris scanner, I think it would look more neat.
I know you can activate the iris scanner as soon as you wake up the phone but I set the home button to automatically unlock (since I use smart lock and that makes it very convenient) so when I press the home button it'll instantly go to the unlock screen where the front cam is activated.
OK I guess I could use the power button instead but I was wondering if there's a way with the home button. Thanks!
Mine is intermittent as to when it does show the camera view. Most of the time it will just come up with a line of text saying look here for iris scanning and I'm never quite sure where I'm supposed to actually be looking.

You should be watching towards the top of the screen near the grid, you should do this even before turning the screen on and it's faster and more accurate
If you look at the red light left hand corner it's unlocks instantly
Yeah its not too bad, i wear glasses so is a bit of a pain sometimes it works through them most of time it doesn't. I might try and get used to doing that "guess where the fingerprint scanner is without putting your finger all over the camera lense" manoeuvre.
I meant why does it *sometimes* come up with the camera viewfinder - does yours *always* come up with the camera viewfinder?
It shows the camera when the unlock isn't instant, or this is what I noticed, just wanted to hide that for a sleeker look

Not an answer but an option. You can go into Settings>Lock screen and security>Iris Scanner>Preview screen mask
There's some goofy masks but maybe there is one that might preset a "sleeker" look for you.

Yep I know about that, that makes everything even worse imo Ahah the main problem to the "sleeker look" is that the camera is super low res, I don't know just feel it's useless but u guess there's no way to get rid of it
I got exactly same question !
That things is pure ugly in term of design and aesthetic, LoL
Hopefully someone can found a way to permanently hide that visual

... and turn on the very last option called "Iris unlock when screen turns on".

But sometimes, we want to jnlock the phone on the table, when its not facing our face, thus we slide up the lock screen,

Sure it has nothing wrong with the function. We just simply hate how it "broke" our beautiful lockscreen layout

You can trigger the iris scanner again by clicking the text on the top center instead of swiping, this will not show the guidance visual.
I found the best way to mitigate this is to do two things.
1. Enable the toggle for "iris unlock when screen turns on" under lockscreen>iris scanner
2. Disable the toggle for "Unlock with home button" under setting>display>navigation bar
It's still not perfect but I'm at 90% success rate and it's far faster than fingerprint debacle. I figure when you press the home screen without option 2, phone triggers instant to unlock. With it unchecked it pauses so you can look at notifications.
Should default this way imo.
By golly you are right!

I'm SO frustrated. The stock Marshmellow Lock Screen is terrible. One of the poor design points of Android for quite some time now. There are much better lock screens such as Microsoft Next, Hi Locker, etc. Some of which (like the ones mentioned) support fingerprint unlock.
The problem with the G6 is that it won't allow you to setup a fingerprint, WITHOUT enabling the system lock screen!
There's other apps that use fingerprint option, such as LastPass app. Can't use it unless you have System Lock screen enabled.
Pathetic

Especially with AOD the lock screen is very rarely seen. With knock on and the finger print scanner being very accurate on this device, I don't use the lock screen ever. I suppose if you use the swipe to unlock it's still relevant.

First the absence of a notification LED.... now this catastrophe!
Life's really tough.
Sorry I got my sweets all mixed up. I meant Nougat, not Marshmellow.
Everyone has different objectives of how they use their smartphone. For me, I'm not one to be using my phone frequently throughout the day. This is a key difference between me and a lot of typical users, especially the younger generation that is doing SMS/Facebook/Snapchat/Instagram/YouTube/Etc much of the day. I for one must have repeating sound alarms for missed SMS and phone calls as the LED indicator doesn't do any good when you aren't always glancing at your phone. I can leave it in another room for much of the day. So I guess I don't miss an LED indicator on my G6. (I use Prof Reminder app). When I do turn on my phone I want to see vital info right up front. That is:
- Text of missed SMS messages
- Missed phone calls
- Upcoming appointments for the next few days
- Weather for the next 3-5 days
I used to use C Locker which lets you put any widgets you want on the lock screen but I'm preferring the simplicity and look of MS Next Lock Screen now.
Anyhoo, my preference is to double tap screen to see my lock screen with all the info, then if I want to unlock, use the fingerprint sensor. The stock lock screen SUCKS.
The bottom line is that use of the fingerprint sensor should be independent of the lock screen setting. This would be like saying you can only use the home button with the stock home screen and couldn't use Nova Launcher.
From what I've been finding online, the Pulse colour suffers from finger print issues more than the Eclipse Black. All I've been able to establish is it has something to do with the different RAM and Storage the Pulse model has, which results in something not working in software. I guess they developed the software on the Eclipse Black (why all of the demo units sent to reviewers before release were Eclipse Black), and then they just slapped it on the Pulse model at launch, and hoped for the best.
Now when you change the DPI (as everyone knows they disabled this option from factory). 449dp seems to be the sweet spot for this phone, it's as small as you can make it without causing major issues. In my testing, 480dp causes the app drawer to not open every single time, and the app drawer labels are cut off at the bottom. Using 500dp, the app drawer won't open at all, so 449dp is the sweet spot for this phone.
Only issue I've found with 449dp is the dock, it shows 5 icons by default. On first start up after a reboot, the icons are evenly spaced across the entire bottom of the screen.

}
When you open any app (even opening the app drawer or pull down the notifications) and go back to the home screen, the 5 icons are suddenly condensed in the middle closer together. They all still work fine, it just adjusts their placement for whatever reason, but they all continue to work fine in their location until you reboot and they'll organize correctly again until anything is opened and it resets back to being condensed towards the middle.
Changing the DPI:
You need to open Settings > About Phone > tap on the Build number, 7 times, this activates Developer options. It will automatically open this for you. (you can access this after by going to Settings > More system settings > Developer options).
In Developer options, scroll down to the Drawing category, and you'll find Smallest width at the bottom of that group, tap it, and change it to 449
You have now successfully change the DPI to 449, congrats!
Fixing the Finger Print Reader:
Now I included changing the DPI above because my settings do not apply to the stock 360dp, it's the same process, but the values will be different for 360dp. Which is why I recommend changing the DPI to 449 for best possible results before using this fix.
You need to download Activity Launcher
When you open Activity Launcher, search and open In-Display Fingerprint and tap on com.goodix.fingerprint.setting.MainActivity
On the screen that opens, tap on Locate sensor and change the values as follows
X = 390
Y = 1900
Width = 300
Height = 300
Lock Aspect Ratio = On
Gradient = Off
W:H 13 & 16
Just reboot your phone, and enjoy a working finger print reader! Great Job!
This fix is for the Pulse colour Red Magic 5G as the Eclipse Black model does not suffer from the same issues, but your results may vary.
Trouble Shooting:
If you are having further issues, BACK UP YOUR DATA and then try doing a factory reset using the Update Software Method
Go to Settings > System Update > tap the three dots in the top right corner > Enter Recovery mode
The phone will reboot into recovery, and from there, you need to use the volume keys and power button to navigate.
Volume Up = Up
Volume Down = Down
Power = Select
English > Wipe Data > Wipe Userdata Partition
Once that's completed
Wipe Cache Partition > Back to Main Menu > Reboot
After you set the phone back up, you're good to go and try this again, doing this fixed TONS of issues I was having with the phone.
When I first got my phone, the finger print reader wasn't great, occasionally it wouldn't work all 5 tries, requiring me to input the pattern unlock I had set. After doing a factory reset by going to Settings > More system settings > Reset options > Erase Phone, the finger print reader wouldn't work at all, and the more factory resets I did trying to recovery the phone back to it's out of box state using that method, only made it worse until the phone was actually unusable and constantly crashing, causing it to force reboot itself just trying to do simple tasks like texting or opening a game.
After doing a factory reset using the System Update Method, I haven't experienced any further issues like this, and have repeated the reset multiple times during testing without any issues. So if your finger print reader is already having a mind of it's own, try doing a system reset using that method first, and then try my fix, because after doing what I mentioned above, it works every single time.
May the odds be ever in your favour.

Yes, this is for the factory locked bootloader, I was doing some reading about the finger print issue, and there actually is a way to root and lock the bootloader, keeping the finger print reader working. It has something to do with unlocking the bootloader on global, making a backup of your firmware, flashing the china firmware, that locks your bootloader again, and then restore your rooted backup, and you keep root with the locked bootloader or something. There's no guide yet, but there's a few posts around that I've found that said this is possible, but the process is extremely picky, it's like an exact process of flashing, wipe, wipe, flash, wipe, etc. It's just a glitch that someone found in the Telegram except the links to the Telegrams got taken down for some reason so I can't join it to learn more about this.
However, with that being said, I would just recommend not updating the phone when Nubia does release fix for all of the current bugs, just keep moving through them, and staying on the launch firmware until a guide on that root with locked boot loader is made, because that seems to be the best possible solution for this phone as of right now.
Another option is one person was able to get Havoc OS working on it, and even though the finger print reader, rgb, fan, and 144hz don't work, that ROM has face unlock, less secure than a finger print reader, but faster, so it is an alternative to making this into more of an actual "phone" and less of a "console".

Nubia released sources... wouldn't that help devs to fix all the current issues the phone has?
