Hi everyone, I was wondering if it were possible to hide seeing my face when using the iris scanner, I think it would look more neat.
I know you can activate the iris scanner as soon as you wake up the phone but I set the home button to automatically unlock (since I use smart lock and that makes it very convenient) so when I press the home button it'll instantly go to the unlock screen where the front cam is activated.
OK I guess I could use the power button instead but I was wondering if there's a way with the home button. Thanks!
Mine is intermittent as to when it does show the camera view. Most of the time it will just come up with a line of text saying look here for iris scanning and I'm never quite sure where I'm supposed to actually be looking.

You should be watching towards the top of the screen near the grid, you should do this even before turning the screen on and it's faster and more accurate
If you look at the red light left hand corner it's unlocks instantly
Yeah its not too bad, i wear glasses so is a bit of a pain sometimes it works through them most of time it doesn't. I might try and get used to doing that "guess where the fingerprint scanner is without putting your finger all over the camera lense" manoeuvre.
I meant why does it *sometimes* come up with the camera viewfinder - does yours *always* come up with the camera viewfinder?
It shows the camera when the unlock isn't instant, or this is what I noticed, just wanted to hide that for a sleeker look

Not an answer but an option. You can go into Settings>Lock screen and security>Iris Scanner>Preview screen mask
There's some goofy masks but maybe there is one that might preset a "sleeker" look for you.

Yep I know about that, that makes everything even worse imo Ahah the main problem to the "sleeker look" is that the camera is super low res, I don't know just feel it's useless but u guess there's no way to get rid of it
I got exactly same question !
That things is pure ugly in term of design and aesthetic, LoL
Hopefully someone can found a way to permanently hide that visual
To unlock your S8 or S8+ with your iris without seeing the camera preview go to:
Settings => Lock screen and security => Iris Scanner
... and turn on the very last option called "Iris unlock when screen turns on".

Thank you,
But we already know and use that option indeed.
But sometimes, we want to jnlock the phone on the table, when its not facing our face, thus we slide up the lock screen,
And then, bam, those ugly visual appear above the PIN number pad. LoL
Sure it has nothing wrong with the function. We just simply hate how it "broke" our beautiful lockscreen layout

You can trigger the iris scanner again by clicking the text on the top center instead of swiping, this will not show the guidance visual.
I found the best way to mitigate this is to do two things.
1. Enable the toggle for "iris unlock when screen turns on" under lockscreen>iris scanner
2. Disable the toggle for "Unlock with home button" under setting>display>navigation bar
It's still not perfect but I'm at 90% success rate and it's far faster than fingerprint debacle. I figure when you press the home screen without option 2, phone triggers instant to unlock. With it unchecked it pauses so you can look at notifications.
Should default this way imo.
By golly you are right!

I know this is an old thread but I just would like to thank you for this tip! I always look at the line of text to unlock my phone and it sometimes doesn't do the trick. But looking at the red dot hasn't failed me yet!!! And it's almost instantaneous! Thanks for this tip.

Would it be hard to program the trackball to wake to the lock screen rather than having to hit the top button. I find it very annoying and it would be so much better for one handed use.
(this thing is slippery!)
It bugs me a bit too. When I had an iPhone I almost always use the home button to bring the unlock screen up. Also my nexus one is a bit slippery too I want a case.
I would be more interested in using volume keys to play/pause/forward/rewind the music payer without waking up the phone. This was one of the applications in iPhone.

If you're playing music, the volume keys are still able to adjust the media volume while music is playing and the phone is locked (and the screen doesn't turn on while doing it either). I prefer that behavior actually.
That's the one thing that always bugged me about the Droid, and what do you know... the N1 has the same problem, lol. Anyway, there has been a lot of discussion about this (including here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613678&highlight=trackball). There's a thread in development as well about maybe mapping that function to the trackball... who knows.
CLOCK APP
I just realized if you open the clock application, and let the phone go to sleep, then you can "Turn it on" with the trackball or volume rocker.
Now if there was a way to have the phone set to "Sleep = Clock" we'd be golden; the clock screen doen't look that bad, either.
Lots of great thoughts here. Bump.
I hated this as well!
I found a solution! (sort of).
"Lock bot Free" from the android market is what i use now.
It enables you to pick differnt lock screens ( i like the hero one since u just scroll downwards to unlock) and it allows for u to press the trackball to wake up.
I have found that it is kind of buggy still. If i reboot the phone, I end up with two lockscreens. The regular nexus 1 one and then my hero one. So i had to reinstall it for it to work properly.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with that app. I just found it on my search to make my N1 less annoying.

I was about to come post this same thing, although I'm experiencing a weird glitch too, but I actually like it. For some reason I don't get a lock screen at all after my phone locks. I hit the trackball/volume keys/power button and it just goes straight to whatever screen I was at when it locked. Pretty sweet actually.

This is Very good, if it was working
it randomly locks or not the screen which is Unaxeptable in my pocket
I tried the alpha3 of myLock. It... sort of worked, except that every time I unlocked/woke the screen, the app itself would toggle itself off. No idea why; it's not like I even have a task killer anymore.

What I don't like about Lock 2.0:
1) If you wake up your phone by accident (and don't unlock the phone) it doesn't go back to sleep after a few seconds of inactivity,
2) it doesn't show your notification bar so you don't know whether you got a new email or text message or other notification.

Have you even looked in the settings? Please examine the app more closely.
Using Lockbot free now. Does what I wanted perfectly (press any hard button to wake up), plus lets me use the Eclair lockscreen which I've always found more aesthetically pleasing.
Installed Lockbot Free, and it does exactly what I want with the trackball, but I can not work out why sometimes it gives me the Eclair screen which I like, and sometimes it chooses a different screen?
Kev
You have to uncheck the stars (I can't remember specifically) next to the unlock screens you do not want to show up. I never liked LockBot, it isn't a precise copy of the real lock screen(s), if I'm going to use a imitation I rather it look complete..
Open up the app, press "My theme." It'll give you a "playlist" of different lock screens. I simply un-star all the ones I don't want and stick with Eclair after changing the background. The clock's font is a bit off, but I will cope.
The fingerprint scanner is really cool and useful for some people, but I personally don't really care to have a security measure like that. That said, I prefer using the scanner as the unlocker instead of the screen unlocker.
Not sure how many people would actually want this as an option, but would it be feasible to add the option for any swipe to be accepted?
Uhm. That's what it does now. You slide your finger and it unlocks.
If you want it to do it without registering fingerprints, no you cannot do this and you wouldn't want it to, as it'd unlocked whenever something brushed against it.
I don't need the added security either, but I also prefer the fingerprint reader to unlock. The only downside is that if I need my gf to do something for me on my phone she has to use the unlock code, but that's no big deal.
I wish the phone would turn on when you swipe. that power button is damn hard to push. why is is recessed in?

I meant it to be a mod type option. I know it's not an option from the factory.
It wouldn't unlock every time something brushed against it because it would still require a press of the button. I honestly don't know the tech that goes into a fingerprint scanner, but it's not just a pressure sensor, so it wouldn't work with just anything touching it. It doesn't even respond if it's through cloth like a shirt, so I'd argue that the screen is more likely to unlock the phone accidentally than the fingerprint swipe would be.
I'm assuming this could be a fairly complex mod, so it's probably not worth the effort it would take. Still figured it would be worth throwing out there for anyone who might be able and willing to give it a try.
Thanks for the responses so far.

old android 1.6 and earlier had by default screen unlock by just pressing a button (g1 has menu button). android still has that function but its disabled, perhaps it can be assigned to the "trackball"?
Got it a couple of hours ago and I''m wondering if there's any way round having to press the home button to unlock the phone, like being able to just rest my finger on the pad to wake it and unlock.
Any idea how to enable double tap to wake up the S7 edge? Just a new user coming from the xperia Z2.

Nearest thing I've found so far is to enable edges then when screen is off, swipe up and down to show the edge content at which point you can unlock via fingerprint reader.

Well I have tried a few tap to wake apps and they all fail. This is making me think that the always on display is actually an app in its own right meaning the tap to wake apps don't activate. Any thoughts my learned colleagues?
Gotta push the button. I understand you want to just rest your finger and let it unlock (like nexus 6P) but is it really that hard to put little bit of pressure to actually push the button and just leave your finger there like you would have with a 6P? Only step you're doing is moving your finger 1/40 of an inch to actuate the button lol.
Partial success! Following this guide for the S6 edge I can have tap to wake working http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/general/tap-to-wake-samsung-device-t3141850
The snag is, and here's the new challenge, to have either AOD or edge clock working whilst it's asleep.
@razorseal : it's not a biggie, I am just trying to recreate the functionality of Windows phones as it was a beautiful workflow that I'd like to keep of glance screen and DT2W/DT2S.
So I'm thinking it's an app like Knockr I need but one which somehow allows AOD to work. Any suggestions welcome - I'm not averse to rooting to achieve this.
Getting closer still. So I uninstalled all that stuff from the link above and put this app on: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.orthur.always_on_display&hl=en
It has an AOD display which if you put your finger on the pad it reads the print and unlocks. It does have a double tap to wake as well which can be used to open the lock screen and then do the fingerprint.
So now I just need a double tap to sleep app then if the battery drain isn't too crazy, the mission is complete.
Anyone know a good double tap to sleep app that isn't a floating widget? Something like on CM13 whereby you double tap the status bar and it goes to sleep would be good.
You could always enable the 'Easy screen turn on' feature, which can be found by going to 'Accessibility' and then 'Dexterity and Interaction'....
I believe this was previously known as 'Air View'.
I hope this helps.

This will probably drain your battery too much. Many of these (root-less) apps keep the AMOLED screen on but with a black rectangle displayed so it looks like it's off. But don't fall into the "AMOLED black does not consume power" lie. There is an entire system powering the screen that consumes power.

Yep this is the easiest solution folks. It's what I use. Just a simple wave or swipe finger over the proximity sensor, device wakes up. There is also a setting elsewhere that stops the phone from waking up if its in your pocket or so, so good idea to use that too.

Quite a nice solution. I wonder if it has any impact on battery, since the proximity sensor is probably always-on ?
I still hate Samsung for not implementing double tap to wake. I mean, they copy everything from Apple, but they can't copy a really useful feature like this from LG (or whoever had it first without battery drain) ?

Answer to your question is Nova Launcher Pro. You can use the double tap gesture to lock the screen, no widgets required. Let me know if you have any confusion with that. The only downside with that is when I wake the phone back up, it says and I quote "Enter PIN instead of using fingerprint recognition because of security policy". It's quite a big deal for me, having to type in the PIN instead of just resting my finger on the home button. Still searching an answer for that. If anyone has found a workaround/solution, please let me know.
PS: Sorry, I had to cut the playstore link from your original message, XDA forums won't let me post with a link in it.

So, I researched a bit and found a workaround. I am not allowed to post links here, so, find an app called 'Screen Lock Pro' from the Play Store. Its by a developer called Prahallad and costs $2.37. Then activate it as a device administrator, go to setting and enable 'Smart Lock and Nexus Imprint'. Then go back to your Nova Launcher settings, into 'Gestures & Inputs'. Select 'Double Tap' under gestures and select the shortcuts tab on the top. From there, select the 'Screen Lock Pro (Shortcut)' and you're done. There are a ton of other features in the app and I am still trying them all out one by one.
I hate lock screens so I disable them. If the fingerprint reader were better I'd seriously consider using it to unlock the phone, but it isn't.
My problem now is the "second" lock screen on this phone. Not sure if this is an andorid thing or an EUI thing, since I haven't used android 6.0+ before.
Essentially, I need my home screen to appears when I click the power button. Is that possible? If so, what setting am I missing to disable this screen with the time and camera icon on it?
What is this SECOND LOCK SCREEN?
What issues are you having with Fingerprint? Mine has worked flawlessly.
You have already disabled the block screen on the phone?

So it turns out its just the regular lock screen. The best I can seem to do is set the auto-lock to 30 minutes - this is the maximum time out. This is better, but I want NO lock screen. Does anyone know if this is possible? Some setting I am missing?
I dunno about the fingerprint reader. I'm no apple fan boy but I have to use one for work, and the fingerprint reader on apple devices is far superior, so I'm spoiled with my expectations. The better solution for me is to just get rid of the lock screen.

Ahem the FP of Le Pro 3 or any Android phone out there is far superior because you can unlock the phone even if the screen is off.
Can't find a setting either; if set to none you still have to slide up the lock screen. Other phones I've had remove it all together if set to none.
Finger print sensor on mine seems fine, so i just use that.
Freezing 'System Interface 6.0.1' in Titanium gets rid of lock screen, but has some serious side effects.

This worked for me:
After pressing Power or scanning Finger Print the ``Second Lock Screen´´ pops up, don´t slide to unlock or press any of the icons or ads, instead look for three little pale white dots on upper left corner of display, (they are hard to notice with some wallpapers, specially the included on the phone wallpapers) almost like the ones in some browsers to deploy a menu, press that, and the Locker app should pop up asking you if you want to disable it, press Disable and that should do it!
If you can´t see them try setting a lock screen wallpaper that has solid dark colors on the upper part of the screen.
I don't understand the problem but I've been using this for 1 year

I'm SO frustrated. The stock Marshmellow Lock Screen is terrible. One of the poor design points of Android for quite some time now. There are much better lock screens such as Microsoft Next, Hi Locker, etc. Some of which (like the ones mentioned) support fingerprint unlock.
The problem with the G6 is that it won't allow you to setup a fingerprint, WITHOUT enabling the system lock screen!
There's other apps that use fingerprint option, such as LastPass app. Can't use it unless you have System Lock screen enabled.
Pathetic

Especially with AOD the lock screen is very rarely seen. With knock on and the finger print scanner being very accurate on this device, I don't use the lock screen ever. I suppose if you use the swipe to unlock it's still relevant.

Everyone has different objectives of how they use their smartphone. For me, I'm not one to be using my phone frequently throughout the day. This is a key difference between me and a lot of typical users, especially the younger generation that is doing SMS/Facebook/Snapchat/Instagram/YouTube/Etc much of the day. I for one must have repeating sound alarms for missed SMS and phone calls as the LED indicator doesn't do any good when you aren't always glancing at your phone. I can leave it in another room for much of the day. So I guess I don't miss an LED indicator on my G6. (I use Prof Reminder app). When I do turn on my phone I want to see vital info right up front. That is:
- Text of missed SMS messages
- Missed phone calls
- Upcoming appointments for the next few days
- Weather for the next 3-5 days
I used to use C Locker which lets you put any widgets you want on the lock screen but I'm preferring the simplicity and look of MS Next Lock Screen now.
Anyhoo, my preference is to double tap screen to see my lock screen with all the info, then if I want to unlock, use the fingerprint sensor. The stock lock screen SUCKS.
The bottom line is that use of the fingerprint sensor should be independent of the lock screen setting. This would be like saying you can only use the home button with the stock home screen and couldn't use Nova Launcher.
