Screen color mode on battery - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

So, the Moto G4 has two screen color modes: standard and intense.
Does the intense one affect battery life? I have been searching for this and I can't find this information anywhere.

....why would it? It doesn't increase or decrease the intensity of the backlight. It just increases the saturation/vibrance of the colors.

Depends on the ROM- stock ROM has color modes built in and some other ROMs have the app.

[Q] What are Gamma settings?

What exactly does gamma do?
I read somewhere that you can tweak gamma settings with no effect on battery life. So you can turn the screen brightness to the minimum and raise a color setting to make the screen contrast better.
It seems to be a popular feature in kernels, but what exactly do people aim to achieve by changing their gamma settings, I don't get it...
quoting myself from another thread:

2.2 is the value you want. As for why, see http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/gamma-correction.htm; basically, electronic images are biased a certain way, and gamma correction is intended to remove that bias. since screens are different, you need different settings to correct the appropriate amount to reach 2.2, which apparently became the industry standard at some point.

Thank You! I think that pretty much halfway answers my question.
Now I wonder the effects of gamma settings on battery, and what brightness/gamma configuration is more 'eye pleasing'.
Is there a general consensious on what that configuration miht be on the Nexus 4 or will I have to play with settings to find out my own?

There's a few presets that you can find on xda but in reality they'll all need tweaked a bit. Like the other guy said, every screens different.

No effect on the battery. This phone has an LCD screen with a backlight, so no matter the colours, the battery drain is the same. The only possible side effect is of your gamma tuning leaves your screen so dark that you have to bump the brightness, which could affect the battery.

T2wake

Just watched a review of the z3 compact, and under the display settings there was an Orion for touch 2 wake. Awesome!

Tried a demo unit at Sony Centre and I can confirm that Z3C has tap2wake and it is pretty responsive.

How about the notification led that everyone is crying about? Was it a bar or just 1 led?
My z2 tablet has this and it works nicely by only gripe isI'd like to be able to change the tap frequency as it's a little fast for me so I get it wrong on occasions

It is just the LED...that is the only notification...I even punched in the diagnostic code and fired up the notification test, which showed only the LED light at the left corner..
Not a deal breaker though...

I agree, but it seems like this is a deal breaker for some people (People like to complain a lot..)
Of course not a deal breaker. But the ZR light is so pretty ?...

I prefer active display rather than any notification LED.
Of course have to await custom ROMs.
But IMO I would prefer no notification light at all.... Therefore the smaller traditional led light would be preferred

Active Display kills battery if it's not using an AMOLED display.
It doesn't kill battery at all on my z1c. Your mistaken there

Have you done a percentage-per-hour battery drain test on Active Display? I've never had a phone without an AMOLED display, but I still can't see how this can be true. An AMOLED display literally only lights up the pixels used for the notification, while an LCD display lights up the whole screen to "render" the black as well as the white. It will definitely use more power. Even if it's not noticeable with your usage patterns, it will likely be noticeable to someone else.
Perhaps.
As a gage.... I get the same battery levels for both LED or active display.
Subsequently active display on my z1c does not drain faster then LED usage.
%/h on PAC ROM for z1c with mosh kernel and mpdecison and active display drains at 2-3%/h
I have the feeling that it takes more battery if T2W is enabled... or did you guys experience something else?
I disabled this feature because it activated screen in my pocket.

it's a feature of the Snapdragon 801, so i'm assuming that power efficiency with T2W is baked in. i've found that battery life is already ridiculously awesome with T2W on -- if you want to increase battery life, you'll get better results with Stamina Mode and selective whitelisting.

Ambient Display from nexus on Xperia

I installed this module on my xperia z2 and everything works like the nexus. I really like the preview notification when I pick up my Z2.

A lot , this feature is designed for AMOLED screens that can fully turn off unused pixels , but on a LCD screen it would have a huge impact on battery life .
Does it really work like in the video? Now, I use this module for months but display don't lights up while picking up.
It doesn't work exactly like in the video.
Operating system is Marshmallow .575
Sorry The screen lights up with notifications. And with flapping hand.
It does not work when lifting.

Screen too bright even on lowest brightness

Hello, I have recently purchased Moto G4 Play and I find the display of it too bright even on the lowest settings.
I used to read news and ebooks at bedtime but it is very stressful with this level of brightness.
I have tried 'Screen Filter' app and it slows down the mobile plus the actual brightness is not reduced.
I will root my device if it is going to help me with this brightness issue.
What would you recommend? My device is still in the 10 day window for return from Amazon.
Thanks.
Not sure about stock but the brightness goes pretty low on the XOSP rom I'm using right now.
Because you mentioned you use it for reading, I would recommend Twilight or f.lux(both available on playstore f.lux needing root).
They really help with the screen saturation and make it easier on your eyes.
I tried screen filter and it worked perfectly. Maybe it has something to do with the stock rom.
An alternate to screen filter would be Lux Lite it worked as good as screen filter maybe this works in your case.
Thanks for quick reply

I am already using Twilight : ), I am little scared about rooting this brand new mobile due to warranty issues. Just for comparison,
the lowest brightness on Moto G4 Play is like Middle for Moto G3 / E3.
Can I claim warranty after rooting this device?

It says on the bootloader unlock page that you cannot once the bootloader is unlocked. So you can't claim the warranty after rooting. But mostly they don't bother letting you claim it on some hardware problems but you should still think of it as void and not take any chances.
Twilight Pro is much enhanced that the free version. I'm using it since I bought this phone. It has "Bed Reading" profile which helps you read in the dark without letting you put stress on your eyes and help you sleep as soon as you leave your phone. According to me, just leave it on default settings and switch to Bed reading at night.
Thanks for reply

Hi, thanks for reply! I've got 'Bed Reading' profile option too but I am using the twilight free version. Anyway, buying it for sure since it certainly helps me and so should the dev get helped.
I have no compelling reason to root this device except this brightness issue, and I am little worried about Nougat update too, feeling maybe Lenovo will roll back its promise.
When I downloaded it first, it asked me to buy for just ₹20 ($0.29) and there was no reason for denial
What about the adaptive brightness?
I had adaptive brightness set to true when I was facing such a problem. Now it works fine. You can check the Ambient Light sensor in GPS Status and Toolbox app.
If you have Xposed installed there are a couple of modules that can lower the minimum brightness

Thank you for reply, just one question.
Does this will reduce the brightness organically? Meaning no gimmick like 'Screen Filter' or anything?

Screen filter puts an overlay over everything else, the backlight is still the same it just looks a little dimmer cause everything is a little greyer.
Xposed can lower the backlight

Great find. Now the brightness is perfect for night reading, and it will also improve battery life.
I don't understand though why manufacturers limit the min brightness when it's "free", maybe to artificially segment the market (flagships always have excellent low brightness)... There are cheap chinese phones that have hardware backlight limits, but for G4 Play it's definitely not the case, it's just software limited.

GravityBox (xposed) can dim the "real" brigthness too...
Note that if the lcd brigthness set to minimum (GravityBox or AllMy....), Youtube videos cant be played in full screen.

- Using GravityBox or AllMy..., ser the minimun brightness to 1 (or even 2)
- Without adaptative brightness, set the brightness (slider) to minimum
- Go to Youtube, play a video and expand it to fullscreen
The screen becames totally black, but the video still playing (the audio still playing).
Note that if the brightness slider isn't at the true real minimun, everything works nicely.
I tried exactly that, but it works for me. I also use Youtube background playback Xposed module.

Green tint on low brightness

Hi, I have a OP8 Pro, and after the update to Android 11, i get a green tint instead of blacks on the screen when i am bellow 40% brightness.
When i was running android 10 that was no issue, so i am pretty sure its not the hardware.
Do you have any ideas why this is happening? Will One Plus fix this?
Common issue reported by many...
Personally I don't have the issue at any brightness but it's due to low brightness which is why the lowest brightness was removed in an update and readded in labs in android 11, turn that off and run FHD (QHD doesn't give they much clarity anyway, plus your battery life will be better)
There's a good few threads regarding this issue already, have a look.
Thank you!

Terrible screen tint/uniformity
Hi guys, looks like OnePlus have got some quality control issues. My unit has terrible colour issues with the display. It's very noticeable at low brightness levels and still apparent around the 50% mark. I've reached out to OnePlus about sorting...
