How about the notification led that everyone is crying about? Was it a bar or just 1 led?
My z2 tablet has this and it works nicely by only gripe isI'd like to be able to change the tap frequency as it's a little fast for me so I get it wrong on occasions

It is just the LED...that is the only notification...I even punched in the diagnostic code and fired up the notification test, which showed only the LED light at the left corner..
Not a deal breaker though...

I prefer active display rather than any notification LED.
Of course have to await custom ROMs.
But IMO I would prefer no notification light at all.... Therefore the smaller traditional led light would be preferred

Active Display kills battery if it's not using an AMOLED display.
It doesn't kill battery at all on my z1c. Your mistaken there

Have you done a percentage-per-hour battery drain test on Active Display? I've never had a phone without an AMOLED display, but I still can't see how this can be true. An AMOLED display literally only lights up the pixels used for the notification, while an LCD display lights up the whole screen to "render" the black as well as the white. It will definitely use more power. Even if it's not noticeable with your usage patterns, it will likely be noticeable to someone else.
Perhaps.
As a gage.... I get the same battery levels for both LED or active display.
Subsequently active display on my z1c does not drain faster then LED usage.
%/h on PAC ROM for z1c with mosh kernel and mpdecison and active display drains at 2-3%/h
I have the feeling that it takes more battery if T2W is enabled... or did you guys experience something else?

it's a feature of the Snapdragon 801, so i'm assuming that power efficiency with T2W is baked in. i've found that battery life is already ridiculously awesome with T2W on -- if you want to increase battery life, you'll get better results with Stamina Mode and selective whitelisting.

Sending this straight back, I cannot believe there is no option to disable auto brightness settings on this heap of ++++.
It has got a mind of its own and is extremely annoying to suddenly see the screen get dim and bright every 5 seconds without any change in actual lighting condition...it makes the phone almost unusable.
Hope someone can make a hack for this soon.

Yes, totally a reason to send it back, software bug on a phone with a unlockable bootloader. Hope your next one doesn't have any real issues
Maybe this was the software bug vodafone was saying?

The phone had an update pending the day I purchased it so most of the reviews I have seen are out of date. This phone is excellent at playing games.

I hear that. In love with my Xperia Play.
Guys can someone tell me. A lot of reviews say that the screen is very dim even on max setting and a lot of reviews say the exact opposite. So what is it?
Mine is perfect in the sun. I'm starting to think there are 2 types of screens involved, anyway to check what screen you have without opening the device up?
Screen brightness is ok for me, but just remarked the display have some ghosting issues. Slide beetween programs screens and observe carrefully the icons.... with red "Adresse" one this is very visible. i can't belive sony use a high response time display on a gamer device.
so yeah. title says it all. its sad how small things can f**k up an awesome phone.
that doesnt mean i wont buy it forever though. but those things are really annoying.
first :
my screen. was yellow. it has a yellowish tint . the whites looked yellow. while my iphone is totally cool blue white.
and i am very OCD about this. god knows how many galaxy S and iphones i returned because of this issue.
and the store didnt have any stock back so there was no option but return it or keep it.
second :
i knew about this issue but god i didnt know its that annoying. no option to turn off the auto brightness. its very low for me . i have to keep a light close to it to keep it on high brightness. i dont care about battery i want to enjoy my gaming sessions with a screen i can SEE ffs.
Third :
i was playing the N64 emulator. mario 64 sometimes lagged at the beginning of the stage, but once you play, its ok. F zero was running below 60fps for sure because my brother has a nexus S and it was super smooth. killer instect not playable on both phones. Xtreme G not playable on both phones.
maybe too many things were open thats why it lagged a little in my gaming tests.
i love the hardware design. and i am sure the roms will fix the auto brightness issue. all i need is a phone with no dead pixels and with a screen that doesnt look like someone pissed on it.

As mentioned this doesn't turn off auto brightness.
All it does is make your brightness 100%. If you cover up the auto brightness sensor, your screen will dim.
I don't own this phone but I do own an HTC EVO and there is an option to turn off the auto brightness. To do this you go to Settings > Display > Brightness and un-check the "Automatic Brightness" box. After that just move the slider to the highest setting and you should be good to go.

I'm positive that a function exists to turn off auto brightness on the xperia play, but at present Sony have omitted any functionality of accessing this from the end user UI.
Meaning it is not possible to turn off auto brightness unless you start rooting and customising your own ROM.
Use "notification toggle" from the market you can disable auto brightness.. But tbh its pretty well implemented..
As for yellow, I have the same issue, but I look at a galaxy s and its really blue, look at my wifes n1 its got a red tint.. The warmth of the screen colors will be adjustable once the phone is rooted

For everyone still having problems with Auto Dim on the Xperia Play, there is an app in the Android market made just for the Xperia Play!
Search: Disable Auto Brightness by hatcyl in the android market!
This app will stop the screen from Dimming / Brightening once it is being used.
Alright guys ...
I had created an application to disable the auto brightness feature of the Xperia Play. The app has now been updated ... and it's great!
1. Thanks everyone for the support!
2. The app has been updated.
New features:
a. Toggle Auto Brightness from launcher.
b. Tasker support (Kinda)
c. THE SCREEN IS NOW SUPER BRIGHT!
Thanks Everyone!
Get the app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hatcyl.android.Disable_Auto_Brightness
ps. This app may also work for other Sony Ericsson devices!
I having similar issue.
Got a new Xperia Neo V and the screen has a yellow tint. Googled around & found that I am not alone. Brightness etc is fine but color is not.
Now since I am still digging in I wanted to know if its a known problem?
If so is there a fix?
Hardware or software?
Thanks
Good job for bumping a dead thread!
If you have a yellow tint to your phone, you have two options. One, you can search for an app of some sort that can adjust the system colors on your phone.
Second option, you can take your phone back and complain about it, if it's been recent enough that you purchased it, you should get an exchange.
Isn't anyone else worried about how blue ICS is and about AMOLED burn in?
Meh, that's what themes are for. Plus as big a video guy as I am, (I'm a video engineer), the "lowered output over time" that many incorrectly call burn in, isn't enough to bother me.yes I can see it looking for it but again, amoled is just too friggen awesome to care. My epic still looked very good after a year of heavy, high brightness use. Also lowering brightness will slow this down but I say (w an extra battery) crank it and enjoy the expensive device you paid for!

ICS will have a blue status bar. The blue leds loose their brightness quicker than the red and green thus the bar being blue you get burn in effect although its not burnin but inproper degradation of the leds.

AFAIK Amoled degradation is non linear (like plasma) the first hunders hours it will degrade fast and then it will stabilize and even the blue leds (which has the shortest lifespan) will outlast the usefull life of your mobile easily (at least 4 years with 6 hours screen time a day)
IF color balance gets skewed by wearing out blue more than the other colors you can always readjust the balance, for example with chainFire's app

Actually I hate the black status, menus, etc. Why don't they use light colors?, I don't know. I much prefer the old android status bar color. At least the degradation was not that visible when using fullscreen apps. (I do browse a lot, and a large procent of pages have white background. Also most apps have white background).
I really do not understand Google why it doesn't give to the user a build-in simple color scheme editor, so you can easily change the system colors (such as statusbar, menu). Like it was on WM. You could change the status bar color via registry, no mess with pack/unpack/resign of framework blablabla. Oh my..

But anyway hope he finds his answers now and he stops worrying. after all we are a community to help each other...
Wow
Yeah, so, if your screen-on time can burn out the screen, before ambient humidity burns out the mainboard... you need to put your phone down before you get cancer LOL
Seriously, the half life of the pixels in AMOLED is a mean average 14,000 hours...
One year, seven months... that would be at FULL brightness, with the screen ON for the entire duration to hit the half life...
And you're WORRIED?! LMMFAO
Use your phone, love it, and stop worrying, you'll have a new phone before you notice pixel death.

So what if I'm typing and working and want to know if I have a message. How do I check visually without picking up the phone? With the notification light it blinks constantly. The active display can't do that and as a result is a drop in functionality for me. Very true. But most people didn't use led notifications because it didn't tell you much (unless you download an app to configure them with different colors). This is what Moto Display and the ambient display were created for. People used to led notifications don't like it but I venture to say more people are making use of the new method.

Enjoy it while you can. Ambient notifications are going to kill the need for led notifications. While it is not was powerful as led notifications, I would imagine we will see a huge drop in LEDs in Android phones in the next year or so.
I installed this module on my xperia z2 and everything works like the nexus. I really like the preview notification when I pick up my Z2.

A lot , this feature is designed for AMOLED screens that can fully turn off unused pixels , but on a LCD screen it would have a huge impact on battery life .
Does it really work like in the video? Now, I use this module for months but display don't lights up while picking up.
It doesn't work exactly like in the video.
Operating system is Marshmallow .575
Sorry The screen lights up with notifications. And with flapping hand.
It does not work when lifting.
