Hi everyone!
maybe you noted that the lg screen is too bright! even in low setting it is almoust unusable in the dark (night)!
Is there someone who knows a way to change the value of brightness of the presets (maybe a regystry tweak)?
I thinks it will be usefull for a lot of people. . . thanks for the help!
I find the low setting to be... quite dark.
Perhaps try setting your theme to Black instead of White...

The low setting is dark in a bright place of course. But if you are in dark, the lowest set for becklit, is too bright. I'll post a link with technical conparison between screens.
here is the link with some data:

I'm bothered by this too. Does anyone know how to set it to a reasonably low value, so that text can be easily read in the dark? (white text, black background)
I found something in the registry related to brightness, but it seems to be already set to the lowest value (0).

Have you tried setting it to a negative value?
/J
Just bought it,and i noticed this too high brightness too...any way to adjust it?
Same here. This is really starting to bother me...
I've already tried messing around with several values in the registry values with no luck... I suspect this can only be solved with drivers and/or firmware. Maybe if enough people complain about this they will change it in a future firmware?

Exactly! I phone my local support and said this and they were really happy to have a customer feedback.
thay said that they are collecting suggestion and than they will evaluate for a firmware update...
maybe we should suggest to implement autofocus (or prefocus at least) in video too!

Done.
They told me no one had reported about this issue yet, and that they would call me back somewhere over the next few weeks, after their engineers discussed it.
In other words, we need a lot more complaints to achieve this...
(Bump)
Out of curiosity, has anyone else done the same? Several people complained here, but this topic is now suspiciously quiet...
You guys sure you don't have the Automatically adjust setting ON?
Stupid question I know, but I need my 8 posts to post links for my mini PDAir LG Optimus 7 Aluminum case review.
Agreed the LG screen is ridiculously bright on both the Lo and Automatic setting in darkness.
I can't use it in bed as it lights up the whole room, and it causes far too much glare in the car at night so no good for SatNav etc.
Surely it would be better for battery life too if the backlight wasn't burning a hole in my eyes!
Data from link above. Obviously LG need to recalibrate their presets:
Brightness Comparison (White Point)
Phone Low Medium High
HTC Surround 10.4 nits 183.1 nits 405.7 nits
LG Optimus 7 130.4 nits 259.1 nits 381.2 nits
Samsung Focus 61.9 nits 143.1 nits 234.3 nits
LG Service Sites - email your local office to request a fix:
http://www.lg.com/global/supports/service-sites.jsp
Don't know if they will bother fixing this on the E900 (here's hoping) although you would expect it to included in the refresh Mango E906?
Did anyone of you use the amazon Kindle app on lg optimus 7? You can adjust the brightness so damn low within this app...
Some of you may have noticed it's difficult to watch dark scenes in movies on the gpad. I think the problem is the gamma calibration, you can see it clearly on the pictures I took.
https://imageshack.com/i/nf96iaj
On the top you can see my nexus 7 2013, you can differentiate all the shades of grey from 1% white to 100%.
On the gpad, everything is solid black from 1% to 12% of white.
You can find the original image here : http://imageshack.us/f/594/6291.png/
How low can you go, on your gpad, before the grey melts with the black ?
Do you know an app to apply gamma correction ?
Here you can see the same picture on the N7 and the gpad. You can't even distinguish the guy's ear on the g pad.

I see the difference, and I knew it was there already also.. I'm sorry, but apparently gamma is not something that is doable. - I was looking to link you the app from market called "Screen Adjuster", however you want to look at this description, especially the last sentence. ;/
- dimming the screen 15-100% (below minimum system brightness)
- screen color and a contrast adjustment
- system brightness 0-100% adjustment
- functional widget (on/off, system brightness, settings)
- autorun option
Some phones have a color tint screen. This app have a possibility to try to improve colors on this kind of the screen by setting an additional factor RGB.*
The range of the dimmer is from 15% to 100% (it allows to dim the screen below a min system brightness value). Make a relief for your eyes during a nightly reading.
Furthermore, you can change fast the system brightness too.
The additional contrast factor can try to make the reading or a picture viewing more comfortable on some screens.*
The widget provides fast on/off service with a shortcuts to the Adjuster settings and the system brightness settings.
The application has the autorun option which works with the dimmer set above 22% (for the safety).
Note
A gamma adjustment is not possible to do.
You can of course try and download the app anyways and see if contrast or brightness will do anything for ya.
- In case you do download the app, remember that setting contrast low will result in problems with installing apps, as in you cannot hit Install, only cancel. To avoid this, open up Screen Adjuster and turn it off, install the app and turn it back on afterwards. It's something about lowering the settings to lower than what is "intended", I don't quite understand it and I find it rather odd. But it let's you install apps.. So I guess hooray.
That's all I got.

Thank you for your response, but I'm already using screen adjuster. I set the contrast at -25 and it helps a lot to see dark details.
Unfortunately, it has two side effects :
- it brightens the dark shades of grey, but also the black levels.
- I noticed that the contrast setting also affects the white making it look like light grey.
So the contrast setting in screen adjuster doesn't affects only the dark tones like it would on a monitor or a tv, it affects the contrast ratio.
I've found apps to make gamma adustment but it only works on some devices with custom kernel.

Yea, I was about to say that gamma can be done but only on custom kernels. Lot of Nexus 5 stuff on the market. Apparently it's Google who locked the gamma settings completely down but only in 4.4.2. I guess it may work on stock LG Kernel since it's only 4.2.2? I'm afraid we'll have to wait for some kernel support for other roms. That would be awesome. I really hope for some Franco-kernel-glory on this device.
That's what I thought, we need to wait for custom kernels...I hope it will come soon, because it's so frustrating to have such a good screen with bad calibration !
People tends to complain too much about the warm white balance but the gamma calibration is far more concerning.

Hi there Young Bobbie, I am new to posting on XDA so I couldn't post this in your kernel developer page. This is my first post on any forum page ever. First off, thank you very much for your hard work to make this kernel happen to correct gamma on the v500. I have been sitting on the fence whether to get the gpad, and if i would get the v500 or the v510. Was leaning toward the v510 because of Sleekmason's wonderful kernel work, but it's exciting that we have now have the same options available for the v500. I noticed this was working fully with the Malladus ROM. My question to you was whether or not this worked with stock LG ROM as well? Thank you again YoungBobbie and Sleekmason for your time and creations.
Sorry, just answered my own question. Guess it helps to read the very first line of the page (making fun of myself now ;-P) Thank you again YoungBobbie and sleekmason!!!

Im using a att s6 edge+. seems with auto brightness off the phone still changes brightness in a dark room. im coming from a note 4 and this never happened. i did read alot of issues like this on the smaller s6 edge. some people said to download lux or other brightness control apps but none of these have helped. I have also changed to each different display option to no avail. i tried with my flashlight while in a room and the phone did change brightness. also to note.... even the light coming off my tv was enough to change the intensity of the phones brightness. did i get a defective phone. there hasn't been a fix and searching online for this new phone has been pretty difficult. any advice would be great. my personal preference has always been to have the screen on max brightness but that's a personal choice.

Would also love a way to fix this, it's incredibly annoying, i cant stand it... I've also tried several "fixes" none have helped.
sucks because the only time i ever get full brightness is when im in a room with ALOT of light. only then will the screen go to full brightness.
Same Issue
Has there ever been any type of resolution to this? My phone does this as well. Don't want to return it for a refurbished Verizon phone that has a high change of also having the same problem. Don't want to root and lose Samsung capabilities and void the warranty. Just had a software update TODAY, this very morning and it didn't fix it. Call Samsung and they play stupid and act like they've never heard of it. This isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things but at the end of the day when I'm trying to read at night or just browse the web and I have my bedroom lights off, I want my screen to be vivid and bright, but I get dull and dim.
---------- Post added at 12:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:29 PM ----------
What discourages me the most is that I just got this phone about 2 weeks ago and noticed this within the first few days. I google this problem and I see threads being posted about this mostly starting in April of 2015. We're now in late October and this is still going on, which leads me to believe Samsung is just not acknowledging the issue at all. I'm tempted to root just to fix this, but don't want to void the warranty and lose Samsung features like the edge notifications and clock.

Have you tried going into settings > Display > Screen Mode and switching off/changing from Adaptive display? Adaptive display is the default setting and this also messes with your brightness and colors dependent on your ambient lighting.
This is a well known bug on most S6's - Looks like a Firmware update should fix this issue.
Turn auto brightness off and set to max brightness ,then hold the phone to a bright light you will see the brightness dim after a few seconds, +BUG+

Hello, I have recently purchased Moto G4 Play and I find the display of it too bright even on the lowest settings.
I used to read news and ebooks at bedtime but it is very stressful with this level of brightness.
I have tried 'Screen Filter' app and it slows down the mobile plus the actual brightness is not reduced.
I will root my device if it is going to help me with this brightness issue.
What would you recommend? My device is still in the 10 day window for return from Amazon.
Thanks.
Not sure about stock but the brightness goes pretty low on the XOSP rom I'm using right now.
Because you mentioned you use it for reading, I would recommend Twilight or f.lux(both available on playstore f.lux needing root).
They really help with the screen saturation and make it easier on your eyes.
I tried screen filter and it worked perfectly. Maybe it has something to do with the stock rom.
An alternate to screen filter would be Lux Lite it worked as good as screen filter maybe this works in your case.
Thanks for quick reply

I am already using Twilight : ), I am little scared about rooting this brand new mobile due to warranty issues. Just for comparison,
the lowest brightness on Moto G4 Play is like Middle for Moto G3 / E3.
Can I claim warranty after rooting this device?

It says on the bootloader unlock page that you cannot once the bootloader is unlocked. So you can't claim the warranty after rooting. But mostly they don't bother letting you claim it on some hardware problems but you should still think of it as void and not take any chances.
Twilight Pro is much enhanced that the free version. I'm using it since I bought this phone. It has "Bed Reading" profile which helps you read in the dark without letting you put stress on your eyes and help you sleep as soon as you leave your phone. According to me, just leave it on default settings and switch to Bed reading at night.

Hi, thanks for reply! I've got 'Bed Reading' profile option too but I am using the twilight free version. Anyway, buying it for sure since it certainly helps me and so should the dev get helped.
I have no compelling reason to root this device except this brightness issue, and I am little worried about Nougat update too, feeling maybe Lenovo will roll back its promise.
When I downloaded it first, it asked me to buy for just ₹20 ($0.29) and there was no reason for denial
What about the adaptive brightness?
I had adaptive brightness set to true when I was facing such a problem. Now it works fine. You can check the Ambient Light sensor in GPS Status and Toolbox app.

Screen filter puts an overlay over everything else, the backlight is still the same it just looks a little dimmer cause everything is a little greyer.
Xposed can lower the backlight

Great find. Now the brightness is perfect for night reading, and it will also improve battery life.
I don't understand though why manufacturers limit the min brightness when it's "free", maybe to artificially segment the market (flagships always have excellent low brightness)... There are cheap chinese phones that have hardware backlight limits, but for G4 Play it's definitely not the case, it's just software limited.

- Using GravityBox or AllMy..., ser the minimun brightness to 1 (or even 2)
- Without adaptative brightness, set the brightness (slider) to minimum
- Go to Youtube, play a video and expand it to fullscreen
The screen becames totally black, but the video still playing (the audio still playing).
Note that if the brightness slider isn't at the true real minimun, everything works nicely.
I tried exactly that, but it works for me. I also use Youtube background playback Xposed module.
