My network doesn't currently support voice over LTE (VoLTE) so everytime I receive a call my signal switches back to 3G (H) or 2G (E). I noticed that after a call, it takes time for my S8 Plus to switch back to LTE. Is there an engineering or advanced configuration settings that can be set so that after a voice call the signal goes back to LTE immediately?
This maybe not an impossible thing because I noticed on some other mobile phone brands that the switching back to LTE signal after a voice call is kinda fast (within 2 to 3 seconds) after a voice call.
Thanks
I had a Sony Xperia Z3c on T-mobile. It was an unlocked phone. When I made a call it would switch to 3g because the phone does not support voice over LTE. Most of the time it would take a while to switch to LTE again unless i went into airplane mode or turned data off for at least 10 seconds OR what seemed like if I was driving maybe it would connect to another tower.
So maybe it's normal with phones that don't have VoLTE?

Hi! I am experiencing faster switching on other brands like Huawei and LG. They switch from 3G or 2G to LTE between 2 to 3 seconds after calls.
And yes, that is correct. I usually switch my phone's airplane mode on and off to get the LTE signal back faster.

it's your service provider problem not S8 problem , i have S8+ and it's back to LTE immediately after call ended .

I got an email while on a call without wifi. I'm in dallas. Anyone else getting data and voice now?
Has been possible since the beginning of time as long as you are on 3G
I concur. ↑
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Really? I've never been able to do that until recently.
Usually when I'd start a call I'd lose the 3G icon and if I received email while in call it wouldn't show up until after I hung up.
Couldn't mess with data without wifi.
Used to do this on my cliq and G1 as well...
Odd.
Also been doing both (on TMob 3G) since February...
Any gsm phone can do that, but it is impossible for cdma
Your phone may have been set to WCDMA only up until now.
chalk that up as a win for GSM and a lose for CDMA

WCDMA is 3G, it has nothing to do with CDMA
In a weak 3G signal area, the phone usually does a handover and transfers the call to the GSM network when the 3G signal falls under some threshold, and GSM doesn't support simultaneous voice and data (icon disappears while on a call)
maybe you have better 3G coverage now and your nexus doesn't need to go the GSM route
I've noticed problems with using data and voice together too. What seems to happen is that it works ok at first, but the instant you lose 3G it never comes back until the call is over, no matter how good your signal. Very frustrating when trying to use your data while on a long call.
Both AT&T and T-Mobile (as can any GSM carrier worldwide) can do voice and data at the same time as long as your phone has a "3G" connection visible while on the phone call. This has always been possible.
What you may see happen is that if you wrap your hands around the bottom of the phone during a call, the signal may drop to "E" or Edge. You can't use data and voice at the same time if your phone is on Edge.
To alleviate this, use a wired or Bluetooth headset, or hold the phone with your fingers rather than your whole palm.

Have you ever seen my problem where once the signal drops to Edge it will never go back to 3G? It doesn't seem like normal behavior to me but it seems to always happen when I need my data during the call. I've been stuck on multi-hour calls where my phone refused to go back to 3G almost from the beginning, and then the second I hang up the phone goes right back to a 3G signal with full bars again. Very frustrating!

the ATT 3G network is not setup to do handoffs from gsm back to 3g. it currently will ONLY handoff from 3G to gsm during a call, and if you are still on your call, it will not switch back until you hang up. in the future this can be enabled both ways. tmobile apparently is setup the same way for now. so you're experience is normal until they reconfigure their network.
Actually it depends on the phone hardware. It IS possible to use GPRS and voice as well if the hardware supports it, its not only something available on 3G/UMTS/WCDMA. There is a pretty even split between class A and class B phones these days, you should look up the specs of the phone you're using.
Nearly all 3G devices allow you to use data and voice together since it isnt timeslot based and so voice and data is logically split and not time divided. This means you dont need specially designed hardware to do it, just the processing power to do it.
Class A
Can be connected to GPRS service and GSM service (voice, SMS), using both at the same time.
Class B
Can be connected to GPRS service and GSM service (voice, SMS), but using only one or the other at a given time. During GSM service (voice call or SMS), GPRS service is suspended, and then resumed automatically after the GSM service (voice call or SMS) has concluded.
Class C
Are connected to either GPRS service or GSM service (voice, SMS). Must be switched manually between one or the other service.
@kam187, thanks for that. I've been with T-Mobile since they were Voicestream, about 10 years now. And I thought I was making voice and data connections with my Nokia phone years ago, before their 3G rollout.
Here is the last phone I used before going the G1 route.

Yep E61 is on nokia's list of Class A devices:

I noticed when i am on a phone call, the E or H(aka data tmobile data) turns off while i am in the call and disappears. Then comes back after i end the call. Does anyone else notice this or know how to make it so it stays on even during a call? Also, when wifi is connected the data service turns off?
First off this is normal when your in a 3bars or less 3G/H area. Your phone will switch 2G while on a call if the 3G signal gets low but it won't switch back until the call is ended. Also on 2G/E you can only do one at time, voice or data. T-Mobile's 2G network is stronger than their current 3G network also.
So if your on a call and the H disappears, this means your phone has switch to 2G/E because your 3G/H signal was low. You won't see E on a call since that would be data and 2G can only do one at a time.
If you want to force 3G/H then goto settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks(I believe) and select WCDMA only under network mode. Please note that if you go into a non 3G/H area you will loose complete signal and your phone won't switch to 2g.
and yes wifi disables mobile data.
Good luck.

Okay that makes sense because i only get edge/2g service in my house. Thanks for the response!
Using N9005, I've noticed that I get stuck in 2G after making/receiving calls. On very rare occasions, I'll be on 3G after the call, but usually I just get stuck on 2G for long periods after that, unless I go into Network Settings and toggle it to WCDMA to force it out of 2G, then toggle back to LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
Alternatively, does anyone have any way to completely disable 2G?

Yes, I know, just that it seems to be very rare that my phone is on 3.5G or 3G after ending a call.
Taking a closer look at the 3G reception in my office (pretty much the only place I make/receive calls), I realize that the spottiness of the 3G reception could be making my phone choose 2G over 3G. Guess I have to test this out somewhere with better reception.
I have recently bought the MI A1. While buying itself it was updated to the latest may patch.
The problem is while on 4g network, I cannot receive nor make any phone calls. For calling I have to manually switch to 3g/2g mode from *#*#4636#*#* menu. Is this a normal behavior of this phone as my other phone swiches to 3g while incoming/ outgoing calls and back switches to 4g after the call is finished.
PS: my network doesn't support volte. Phone is manufactured on Feb 2018, it's not modified by any means.
That's not normal behavior.
I've never seen a phone where You have to switch between 3G/4G/LTE for calls and data.
Can You try a SIM-card from another service provider to see if it behaves differently?
If You check at https://willmyphonework.net/ are all bands supported with Your provider?
Or, in worst case of course, try a factory reset and see if that makes any difference...
Set to 3g/4g in *#*#4636#*#* menu.
Airtel doesn't support volte in all circles yet. Only rolled in few circles. In 3g/4g mode, it'll be mostly in 4g mode if nw strength is good & switch to 3g when you call or receive a call
When I turn on mobile data (Airtel 4G), the data works fine on 4G. But, when I receive a call, the data automatically goes to 2G/3G and when the call is over, the data doesn't come back to 4G immediately, it takes 3-4 minutes to come back to 4G. How to fix this problem? On my redmi note 5 pro data immediately changes to 4G after call.

Our device's connectivity is inferior compared to RN5 pro. Happens with me on Vodafone.
You can try - reset the access point names to default.
Doesn't airtel's VoLTE work?
Airtel Volte doesnt work on my zenfone but on my redmi note 5 pro it works.
Weird, must be a bug, mine is normal
4g before call, H on call, 4g immediately after call

As i wrote in another thread, i'm facing similar issues. Slow hang-up, slow switch, poor 4g performance. I wrote at the italian support and on the asus zentalk support here: https://www.asus.com/zentalk/thread-236917-1-1.html
Please report the problems with network to Asus, in my thread or with another if you prefer, but tell to them, so that they understand that it's a common problem and they have to work on to fix it
Any solution guys?
