Water damage, or damaged 3.5mm jack, I don't know. Just buy a new pair of headphones

My universal hit the ground by accident and I found that the speaker can not play any sounds. But the machine works well with earphone.
you have 2 options
fix it or return it
or
sell it or live with earphones simple as
Technically, isn't that 4 options

it might actually just be a simple problem.
the speakers are connected to the mainboard by a loose wire (each speaker seperately), maybe it just got disconnected when it fell.
if you're not afraid opening the device, try to open it and to use the service manual to find out where the wires are (quit simple, they're above everything else i think) and check they are plugged in firmly.

There is a known problem related to the earphone socket that causes this same effect. In your case it's more likely you've buggered the speaker or wires, but in my case the earphone socket was acting like the earphones were plugged in when they weren't. After buggering about with a small pointy object I got it working again. I'll stick to BT in future.

Plug headphones into XPERIA and I get 20+ radio stations in good qulaity; plug headphones into Omnia 7 and I get static, with the occasional hint of sound if I move the wire around. It's very occasional and very quiet though.
Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks
EDIT: Oh, it works with the included headphones but not with my own ones, even though the XPERIA works with any and all.

Does anyone know why this is? Apparently this is the case with a number of recent Samsung handsets. IS it to do with the connector or the wire(s)? If it's the connector then it should be possible to make an adapter.
Thanks
it's working fine for me
i'm using sennheiser cx400 II
are you plugging the headphones in firmly?

Ya first time i plugged in, it was low, staticy as i didn't push and "click" hard enough so to say, check if anything is blocking the jack. it's a dam snug fit to say the least.
Here's another problem I found, the standard inline earphones with mic and single button doesn't work.. it worked just fine on my Desire HD and nexus S as well as nexus one..
I tried 2 different ones, my guess is that the Atrix headphone jack only has audio out.
if you guys have found otherwise let me know how I can get that to work..
if in fact the Atrix is only audio out on the headphone jack I'll definitely return it tomorrow and get something else..
I just grabbed an iPhone headset (stereo) and made a call and it worked great.
I'm having this same problem. I used a pair of SkullCandy 50/50 and only got audio. The mic was still working on the phone, and the buttons on the headphones didn't do anything.
I have ibeats headset, everything works on DesireHD and my iphone. but for some reason none of it works on the Atrix.. beh..
I dug out an old pair of headphones that came with a Palm Pre, and the mic works on that. The button also brings up a menu to start a voice program. They do not have volume buttons so I cannot test that.
This is really going to annoy me if this phone can only use crappy headsets.

Was this a standard one that comes with the iPhone? Do the volume buttons do anything?
Skullcandy FMJ w/mic
I have the skullcandy full metal jacket w/mic and it works fine. Although when I first inserted the jack into the plug (*beavis laugh) the phone still played music out of the speaker(s) on the phone. So I pulled the plug out and reinserted while twisting the plug. Dont push too hard cuz it seems the plug does not go all the way in. The curve on the case near the jack makes it appear that it is not fully inserted. Try cleaning your plug as well.
Both headphones i tried stick out of the phone a little bit, and the same amount. Plus audio works on both, I would think that audio would not work if one was not plugged in correctly

Just tested and the volume buttons don't do a thing.
I tried "removing" vlingo and voice commands/search, but still can't use the remote button on my headphones.
might have bad jack
The jack might be broken or not connected well. It is a modular piece that can be removed without de-soldering if you take the phone apart you can test each ring on the plug/jack for continuity by touching the meter to the springy metal contacts that touch the circuit board. I would just do a return or atleast have att try other headphones. Im not sure about the volume control but the single button on my mic controls everything including media forward reverse and pause. I can even get vlingo and google voice search to come up ( a long press on the other hand opens the media application).
Old thread... but for future reference, Motorola switched the headset pinout on this phone and the Xoom. You'll have to ask the Cliq guys what they use, or you could wire a adapter cable up.
I can't post links, but look up the Motorola OH20 and motorola.com /Support/CA-EN/OMTP-Headset-Support
Wow, that is kinda retarded that moto did that. I'd never even heard of OMTP until just now. Seems MOTO is the only one that does this. Some 'open' standard. Seems the only way around it would be to use a B headset.
Wired Headsets Don't work due to OMTP
Well...
I am a huge fan of Bluetooth technology and have just about every kind of handsfree, however I was really looking forward to the 3.5 mm jack. There are some pretty impressive headsets available.
This is what I found about OMTP:

Here is an option I am pursuing:
http://www.nox-audio.com/Products/OMTP-Adapter-16
I hope this helps...

This isn't the problem. I have a xoom and the same headset can play/pause.
So, no solutions to this except for spending another 50 bucks to buy a new head set that's omtp compatible?
I have a set of ear buds rat came with a blackberry bold from work. It only has a single button but it does do play/pause in winamp and the mix works. There is a post in the accessories section with some options and reports of ways working for everyone.
Sent from my Atrix using XDA Premium.
tried:
a iPhone 3g earphone with only one button works fine for me.
several iPhone 3gs 3-button earphones - don't work at all, even the mic
Hi,
I found out that none of my Audio jack cables I have in my car, at home as well as all my headphones doesn't work well or doesn't work at all with my Xperia play.
Sometimes only one channel will play, other times everything sounds fine but the volume will go all the way down on it's own just like I held the volume down button (but I didn't)
I have red online about similar issues with the X10, and people telling the wiring is different and require headphones from SE only.
Other than that I love this phone!
EDIT: Faulty device. My new one works well.

Any of you have similar issues? How can we bypass that kind of problem?
Thanks.

if you have a mic with the headset and it is non-SE branded, then yea, it is gonna get jacked up; regular headphone will not have that problem
Hmmm...
None of the audio cable I'm talking about have a mic on them. I might have a faulty device then.
I think I'll try to return it.
Had the problem with the earplugs that came with the play, sometimes turning it a bit fixes the problem...
For me that's the only one that works perfectly.
Every other cables or headset are messed up. (ie. In Backstab the voice over are barely hearable and podcasts I listen to everyday is the same. If I unplug the headphones the sound from the speaker is perfect.)
I'm heading to Future Shop right now I'll post when I get back.
Thanks for you input guys.

Edit
Confirmed.
It was a faulty device. The second one could not detect me Sim card but the 3rd is all good for now. The good news is that one is black!
Similar problem here. I've just tried my old HTC headphones and it sounds muffled and some parts of the music can't be heard. Put the Sony headphones in and it works fine.
Also, my S9 Bluetooth headphones worked fine first time.
D.
You probably got a faulty one as well.
The one I got now does'nt have this problem. Had to explain and test in front of the guys at Future shop to prove them I was right.
Bluetooth was working properly on mine too.
Hi, I had a problem with my headset, I saw on internet that if I put an aluminum ball in TRS connector of the phone (the hole), my headset will work. My headset are now fixed
But now there is no speaker anymore, (i guess that my phone now think that there is a headset in it), so I will not know when someone will call me, and I need the alarm the morning to wake up for school(most important) ! :/
So I'd like to know if there is an app or something like that which could enable speaker and headset at the same, to get the speaker back.
Thanks you it's very important !
Switching between speakers and headphone is actually done physically inside the jack. AFAIK, there's no way to enable both using a software.
