S8/S8+ Edge Lighting - Does it Work? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Is anyone able to get the Edge Lighting to work constantly? I cannot get it to work AT ALL.....

There are already 5 or 6 threads about it in the S8 forums and S8+ forums with solutions. Do a quick search with "Edge Lighting" and read on.

Thanks for the info.....all of the solutions have no resolve. Only 10% of people who have tried the fix get something to work. So are you saying you have the S8/S8+ and it works?

The title of your thread makes it seems like edge lighting feature is working for you. Change it a bit so it isn't misleading.

Yes. It works out of the box for apps that support natively the "wake up screen" notification function. There's only a handful of those apps for now. For all the other apps, you need a 3rd party app to deal with the "wake up screen" function, like Light Flow.

Standard SMS doesn't even work for me...

For the record, Samsung has acknowledged the issue and is researching a solution.

Q: Edge Screen notification options

Hi guys,
Loving my new S6 Edge+! #TeamSamsung !
OK, so to the question:
Is it possible to somehow set-up that the Edge Screen that uppon reciving an Email (on Gmail) or an SMS you get an Edge Screen notification (when your Home Screen is dark) ?
At first I was expecting this as a normal feature - but from browsing the new about it, it seems Edge+ does not actually support this and you need to "Swipe" the Edge Screen in order to display it.
If this is not possible to do as of now - should I post it as a "Request" under Apps forums or Original Android Development ? (New on XDA btw)
Thanks a lot,
David
I was thinking about the same thing today. It would be nice to use it in wider range. The best option would be to set what kind of information are displayed on edge screen(choose aps) and for how long display will be light up. If you have any apps/suggestions we would be grateful.

Thanks for your reply.
EDIT:
Ok I tried this app from galaxy apps since I have no root.
It is not exactly what I was looking for. I will try to give more details.
What I want is an application which would redirect all notifications (phone in silent mode) to edge screen for example when I am on a meeting. Do not know if anything like this exists but it would be nice.

I think RuggedHunter's app does that. But It also needs root permission.

Always on Display & Whatsapp

I just read that the always on display so far shows only text, Email and missed calls. I'm owning a moto x and the active display is one of my favorite features. Especially that it shows me a preview of the message and the sender. So I know whether it's worth to open the app or just dismiss it. For those who already got the phone, how do you deal with that? Any 3rd party apps that supports the always on display and whatsapp.
Hey,
Unfortunately, it is not like the active display, it only shows missed calls or messages no 3partyapps if need one like the moto active display u can download the app " Ac display its almost the same like the moto one here a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.acdisplay
And a screen from the always on options and possibilities
http://imgur.com/a/uzUfR
But in my opinion its a nice feature so u got always in time
Greetings Paddy-
Thanks Paddy,
I played a little bit with acdisplay the last days. Do you know how I can make as a always on display? It only pops up when I have notifications. I would like to use like samsungs active display for testing.
Just received my pre-ordered S7 EDGE. To cut it short, with no ROOT or other tweaks at the moment, the AOD only shows missed calls and text messages (not even e-mails). So although a nice attempt, if fails lamentably. It is only really useful if you want to check the time or battery power most of the time.
Also, off topic, the edge display is also nice, but not actually useful since it does not pop up when screen is off and a notification arrives.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree is pretty useless atm - i think wish the clock would work with the green pines image combination - i hope they make it more useful otherwise much about nothing
I did have it on overnight and i noticed in 8h it only eat up 5% which is not bad at all
PS: where did you pre-ordered the phone from? are there any shops selling in on preorder in Romania??
thanks
Yeah it's really just a way to check the time. using a 3rd party text app (google messenger in my case) you don't even get the text. All i get is the missed calls and time and battery. I'm ok with that though. I get notifications on my Gear S. the time and battery are usually the only things I look for if screen is off. If I get a blinking LED i know i have a notification waiting anyways.
Agreed that it's a bit limiting at present, but looking at other areas of the phone (themes / camera) Samsung have added options to download additional functionality. They'll almost definitely do something similar to always on display!
If you ask me, I think Samsung quickly implemented the Always-On screen after their "spies" found out that LG will have it, or maybe seeing the V10 success with the second screen. Otherwise I really can't understand why would you bother to implement such a useful feature in such a horrible manner. Who uses SMS these days ? Almost no one. Yet missed SMS messages are are part of the feature while missing any other useful notification. Even their own email application doesn't use the feature. I really hope that the next update brings huge improvements on this.
I remember in my S6 edge there was the Edge display which could be always on with ROOT and Mods.. And laso it would show new notifications. Hopefully development will start soon as we have Root

Careful about your assumptions, there are plenty of people that still use SMS (such as myself and most of my friends/family/coworkers). That being said, I agree the implementation of this basically misses the point, unless you just want a desk clock.

I was reading on another thread in here I forget which, but the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, refuse to flash anything not digitally signed by samsung.
even the stock firmware if uncompressed and re-compressed it looses the samsung signature and fails to flash to the system partition

This is funny. I don't know anyone that does NOT use text messaging. I guess it's the circles you run in but I've never heard one single person in my life mention giving up SMS.
SMS is so 2014! I only use whatsapp as do all of the people i know. Texting sucks.

The problem is that you missed the point of my post. There are tons of applications delivering notifications, and if the always-on screen is to fulfill its promise, all the notifications should be displayed in some way.

All major retailers in Romania offered pre-orders. I've got mine with the gear vr for a really good price. Mine arrived on the 9th of March as well.
My question is: can be the what's app, facebook, gmail ecc notifications on AOD implemented by software in the future?
i use the always on feature all the time ,but like the rest of us, i wished it showed part of sms message if not all and the email message who the call was from etc , would be good if could just reply as well ,i think i am getting ahead of myself there lol

Package Disabler Pro!! What not to disable...?

Hey everyone! Quick question, I've read many times that "Package Disabler Pro" is the best app to disable all the bloatware.
But I have also read that if you disable all of them or use the "Disable all Bloatware" selection in the app, it causes issues with other apps and services such as samsung say and amongst others.
Can anyone help on this issue? Or is there a solution out there... saying which to disable and which not to?
Any help would be awesome! Thanks!
This is too complex question and next, some packages depends on another. E.g. you can disable ANT+ but you need it if you have a sport watch.
Generally, do not dollow colors in the application. I've found some ping packages which could be important (ANT+).
It depends on your needs/using habits, but there is some that can be disable almost always, yet still there is cases where you may need it.
Few examples:
- you can disable email application and its services since you can (and probably should unless something very specific) use Gmail instead of it (you can set up non-gmail account in Gmail app), so feel free to disable this.
-Google play movies/music/newstand/books - if you dont use these disable them.
-Galaxy apps and its services - i dont see point for this app, only uses are - for getting offers (so claim them before disabling) and galaxy care... any apps you can get on play store, so egt the offers from Galaxy apps and turn it ands its services off.
-Gear VR services - if you dont have Gear VR headset then there is no use for these services and if you get Gear VR afterwards you can just enable those services, its fast and easy.
-SHealth and its service - dont use it? feel free to disable it.
- i dont use Samsung account and its backup options (since you have same functions from google) so if you dont also, feel free to disable it and its related services.
and there is A LOT more, and it all depends on what you want/will use! BUT remember, its very simple and fast to enable them even if you disabled them, with no harm done.
Carefully Checked Before Disabling, but Galaxy S7 Keeps Rebooting
I have carefully checked everything I disabled before doing it, but now my Galaxy S7 keeps rebooting, although not always with the same results. The fact that there's no information about numerous items preloaded on this phone is totally unhelpful!
How does this app work, since it doesn't require root? And is there any chance it will trip the Knox counter on an unrooted phone? I'm very interested in it, but I don't want to lose my tap and pay or my warranty (yet).
I have posted here my extensive list of disabled packages, with no ill effects that I know of:

I have doubt about these:
com.sec.android.widgetapp.samsungapps (maybe Always on Display items are in Widget ? maybe, just I guess)
com.samsung.android.app.galaxyfinder (It's not about this problem but I advice enable it. This is search bar in the menu.)
com.samsung.android.app.aodservice ( edited and solved: This is Always On Display "AOD")
com.sec.factory
com.samsung.android.firmware.tsp
com.samsung.android.app.watchmanager (maybe about watch)
com.samsung.android.sm
and I see you disabled too many useful app like "Wallpaper Cropper, Galaxy Finder". Why you disable these ?
Just try it first what I wrote and check again for Always On Display

Thnx a lot, I will try this out right now, many of these packages were disabled from an xlm file I found, but some were disabled by me, most of the "useful" apps are disabled cause theres something else replacing that function already, I use quickpik for gallery and cropping, nova launcher for launcher, galaxy finder I have no idea what it does, but I've had tons of other brands and never needed anything from motorola, htc or LG, I guess I like to stick with a pure android experience, thank you for your help !

Yeah, I see on my Sony Xperia phone that has a custom ROM that there's an option on lockscreen and security that allows you to choose how long does it take for the phone to lock, not sleep but lock, in seconds, like "5 seconds after screen turns off" or "immediately after screen turns off" etc.....on my S7 it just takes forever and I can't find a similar option, sometimes I turn off the screen and after a few minutes I turn it on and it still has locked, sometimes it does it immediately, could there be a workaround ?

On the previous Moto devices with Moto Display, the notifications would "pulse." Meaning until you dismissed the notification, every few seconds, the screen would fade in and out...It was actually a great feature...They probably dumped it to save a little bit of battery life...

Go into your Moto app. Third option should be "Display". Toggle it on. You can block specific apps from displaying by selecting "Block Apps", as I believe all apps will show by default.
After trying dozens of apps I think I found something that can work. There are several 3rd party lock screens that offer breath notifications but you end up losing the finger print reader function which was a big selling point to me. NoLed worked but you either need to shut off your lock screen or basically have two lockscreens which is kinda a pain.
So I thought maybe I just need to have the phone remind me I have a notification. I scoured the Google play store and came across an application called Recurrent Notification Manager which in my first days use seems to work. You basically tell Recurrent Notification Manager what app to monitor set the time you want the app to be refreshed and it's good to go. Best thing is you can still keep the fingerprint reader and the moto display on with the cool hand wavy thing.
It is a free app but if you want it to monitor more then one app with you have to pay $1.70. Also this app is a bit rough around the edges it's only got a 3.0 rating in the Google play store but everything seems to be working fine on my end.

In my experience, notifications will breathe until dismissed. Motos running Marshmallow handled these notifications differently than Nougat-based Moto's now do, but it's the same in principle.

I was able to get NoLED to work. However, when you have a notification on the blank (or maybe lock) screen you have to dismiss it by touching the home button. Once I do that I touch the fingerprint scanner and the phone unlocks. It is an extra touch, but not too bad. I will check out the app you reference above as well.

Late notifications on Samsung Galaxy S10+

Does anyone experience late notifications?
I am using S10+ Snapdragon version.
It seems that there is something that optimizes the background processes. Sometimes, I unlock the phone in order to receive the notifications.
I have made any workarounds mentioned in several websites, like to disable the optimization of certain apps through the battery settings and so on.
Nothing worked though.
Anyone got any suggestions or experiencing the same thing?
Thanks
Everyone gets notifications except me?
nobody ?
It's not just you, it drives me nuts. I have some notifications that will come in immediately if the phone is "open" (on), but it can take up to 10 - 15 minutes if the phone if off. Some notifications are immediate no matter what. I have disabled battery optimization for each app that I want notifications from, but it seems to make no difference...
