[NEWS] ZUK Mobile is shutting down - Lenovo ZUK Z2 (Plus) Guides, News, & Discussion

http://www.gizchina.com/2017/04/26/zuk-mobile-going-shut-according-analyst-pan-jiutang/
That is some sad news for us
At least we have some awesome devs that will continue doing their awesome work for our phone!

I bought the Z2 for backup device and flash Lineage OS. 64GB/4GB with Snapdragon 820 and big battery for 150€...
I think with stock rom I will not buy it, even for 100€.

I wouldn't trust some no name Chinese analyst. And even if this is true, they will still continue to support Zuk devices for a few years, like Nokia did. And to those who complain, I have a special deal for you: right now you can get Xperia XZ, a similar device, which is available for preorder at some change: 749 euros. http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_xz_premium_eu_preorders_open_next_week_at__euro749-news-24774.php And keep in mind, on custom roms you will have a camera quality of a feature phone. Although, Sony isn't going anywhere, they abandon their devices after 2 versions of Android. So, if Xperia XZ was released with MM, that means, they will abandon the device after Android O, which means next year Good luck...

my main concern is not about updates because we have some awesome devs like you that will keep our device updated with custom ROMs, my concern is actually that we may not have any 5-inch phone with snap 835 for a really good price since now it seems 5.5-inch is the standard.

If you plan to use it for 2 or 3 years, you should wait what is around in 3 years and not in half a year.

I plan on using it until it starts becoming problematic. Could be months or years.
My previous phone (Zenfone) started having a lot of problems in 8 months and I didn't use custom ROMs on it, it was just the stock ROM all along and a lot of problems. If my ZUK Z2 starts showing problems and I can't fix, I will want to buy another phone with at least the same specs and size, so I hope they release another "budget" until then.

not putting nougat update on m7 just bad marketing

HTC would be the most attractive company on the market if they put out a reputation of 4+ system platform upgrades. M7 is the perfect phone to start with. Updating in multiple stages for all M7 stock systems, Lollipop-->Nougat

lol keep dreaming
3 years old device get official n update ? no,, keep dreaming bro
I think you are misreading my post. It is my intention that HTC set a mark higher than the other companies dare to go, creating a reputation of value greater than the other companies, and driving business away from the competition, towards our phones... and my phone is just over 1 mo old. :good: phone battery lasted all day and still over 50% left. No charging for 12 hours
Your M7 is one month old, yes, but tje m7 was released 3 years ago, we as m7 users have to rely on the devs to create updated roms for us.
Nougat requires Vulkan, the GPU in the snapdragon 600 doesnt have it, even the 800/801 doesnt have it, thats why the N5 wont get it either.

Actually, it doesn't really require it as my Moto G3 has an AOSP Nougat ROM.
Apparently, Apple owners keep their devices for 3-4 years, on average. They can reasonably expect software support for the entire time they keep their device.
Even with a lower, less-frequent device turnover than many Androids, Apple manages to sell a lot of phones each year.
With the increased competition for Android users' money, you'd think one of the major Android manufacturers, who are often criticized for copying Apple, would follow Apple's example on the software support front. This would quickly make them stand out from the pack.
I, for one, am never again buying an expensive phone with no guarantees of extended software support. If HTC is done with the M7, then I'm done with them.

Good luck finding an OEM that supports phones over two years. From what I've seen, HTC is one of the better OEMs to support device updates in recent years.
Maybe a Nexus device, but even then the Nexus 5 (released after the m7) isn't getting Nougat either.

Well, there's Apple. Ugh.
It's hard for the voice of "reason" to be heard by manufacturers over the noise of massive sales & media hype. So, those of us that like prompt s/w updates, loud speakers, and 4.7" screens are largely out of luck with Android devices lately.
Nexus/Pixel purchases are one way to to indicate a preference for updates, but it feels a bit like a protest vote - kind of like when the 3rd party candidates aren't much better than the front-runners.

Probably a lot easier for Apple to bring iOS 10 to the Iphone 5 when they "only" have released 9 phones (and half of them simply being a "+" or "S" variant) in the last 5 years.
How much phones did HTC released in 5 years? Over a hundred if you count all the phones from the One series, Desires series, Droid series... Virtually impossible to keep them all updated to the latest version. I think 3 years of official updates for an android flagship is really good. If HTC had the whole android market for them, making only 1 phone/year (and a "+" variant), I'm sure they would also be able to give official update for 5 years.

That's because they've all set the bar so low.
Something has to be done to convince Google, Qualcomm/etc, and the phone manufacturers to work out a solution that makes updates easier. Maybe, as these devices make their way deeper into the corporate/government world (where long-term support is a huge deal), they'll see how it makes business sense for them to do it.
All I can do is support the devices with the longest support cycle.

You should know that the S variants are usually entirely different phones, sharing only the chassis and outer shell, and even thoses have subtle differences. I consider the standard, non S devices from apple as a proof of concept and crowd beta testing (let us all remember the antenagate), and then they release the S to address all the shortcomings of the previous one. And that's the advice i give to all my friends which are tempting on buying a iPhone, you're better with the previous S, than the current Non-S (bang for buck)
Regarding your other statement, that's one of the main problems i find with OEMs these days, from HTC to Samsung to Sony... They flood the market with too many variations of the same device, keep up with multiple trees of them, each with a miriad of products. Like you said, on HTC you get the One, the Desire, the Droid, and probably others. On Samsung, you get the S, the Note, smaller tree but dear God, so many devices.
Consider this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy#Models
or
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_HTC_devices
It get's to the point that unless you are a connoisseur of your OEM, it's very hard to tell if the device A is better than the B, just by their model.
OEMs should focus more, dedicate more R&D time to less devices and produce better hardware, and offer better software support. Hell, the auto industry warranty figured this out several years ago, you get car A with 3Years or 60000miles warranty, and car B with 5y or 100000miles... this factor weights on your decision...
Of course its a stupid idea. Because the phone companies putting out the phones for a penny to end users.
But mostly its stupid cause no matter what you do the phone go flop in water or slide out a pocket between bike spokes and frame at top speed and splat! Time for a new one.(see my new video)
And its stupid cause UFS type game changing upgrades to hardware.
You know it would be nice on the M7 is all.
but could they just give us security patches on the phones? That would be a great thing.

Guys , I'm Sorry to say so ... but , your all wrong because N5 finally received Nougat ( no matter it was not official ) but as it is fully functional ( actually the ones based on r7 ) and everything seems fine , it means that it's not Impossible to have it on our M7 either ... No, definitely not impossible, but I was referring to official support. OEMs tend to support phones for about two years. Anything older requires XDA developers to come to the rescue.
There was a topic here recently where someone said they built Nougat for the m7. He said something to the effect of, "nothing worked," which doesn't reveal how far he got.

Sure thing ... I esp meant the other reply talking about the hardware staff ... But, your telling the Right thing in general ... OEMs leave usually after a year or two ... actually , HTC is MUCH better than Sam ( I own a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 ) because my tablet is even much better than Flagships ( according to Hardware and Software ... I even got better Benchmarks with my kernel comparing with Note 3 ) but , It didn't even get a simple TouchWiz M Release which is much more annoying ... also the sources samsung provides are usually less flexible with different ToolChains and Modifications Comparing with HTC ( at least with M7 ) ... I even faced some Odd errors when compiling with a newer TC which is not true with HTC M7's ... long story short , I'm never going to buy a Sam again ... Their phones are dull but pretty dolled up ( at least in my humble Opinion )

Goodbye xperia

I have got xperia sp as my first android phone,it gave a lot of memories,a connection to my old friends via whatsapp or the smooth android with a huge 1gb memory,i bought it in 2013, but sadly it has worn out,i have currently flashed android 6 and planning to upgrade to android 7.
The dualshock 3 pairing is most crucial aspect of this phone,in its essence this phone was a legend.
I will ask you guys this,
What should i buy next,
iPhone 6s/7 or a new android phone?
comment below
I think you should buy an Android phone.
Xperia XZ - Xperia X Compact my suggestions.
Whatever works best for you?
I, for example, tried a few phones and decided after it which one would be my next phone. I advice you to do the same: try a few ones and choose the one that works best for you.
I dont want iphone to show off or something,i just want to use it as well..ios..so it is an option otherwise i am thinking google pixel...has anyone used it??
So, what's your budget? Around $650 or something?
And are you play any games on phone?
I'd say get a Xperia X Compact, if it fits on your hands. (Same screen size, but different body dimension, when it hold my hand it feels much better than Z3 Compact, yep i've checked at phone shop.)
[Off Topic] I still using Xperia SP, Because i'm waiting releasing the Snapdragon 830 and 835 (somewhere in future 2018 Q1)
If they're asking to me "Why waiting for new snapdragon? get it buy the Google Pixel, damn!"
But, the reason is, it would waste of money, what they're gimmick like fetaures, hardware, camera. (The most important strongest chipset it means you get good FPS in newer games, Virtual Reality cool stuff, 10nm node on chip Snapdragon, emulator if could get work like NFS Carbon, Zelda Wind Walker etc. *blah blah too much stuff if you wouldn't want to hear*)
Wait there's more, Otherwise if you don't have enough money then next year it will price cut cost, you could get steal money.

This video is funny as hell. Comparing the specs, it blows my mind how freaking slow android is. I mean, the One Plus 3T has like 3 times more RAM than the iPhone 7 Plus, and when it "beats" it the difference is like a few seconds at most. Of course, the A10 Fusion is a freaking beast and IOS optimization is incredible, but still.
xperia x performance would be awesome.
A bit late?
I might be a bit late to this post but all I have got to say is that Sony have changed a lot, their devices used to be really nice and the software was great back in the pre-2014 days, but since then I think Sony has gone downhill, none of the devices even appeal to me anymore. Like the other guy said, don't limit yourself to Sony and go for something different-whatever is right for you. In my opinion LG is very nice-their devices appeal to me a lot.

You still haven't got a new phone? If so then you might as well wait for MWC 2017, end of Feb. There will be plenty of announcements including Nokia who may announce several phones. :victory:
Even if there isn't anything good announced, prices of current devices may be driven down so then you could jump in and get a good bargain.
That is why i am waiting for mwc, nokia android phone and many more are on their way.
Btw galaxy s8 might be announced in mwc 2017 next month

I really loved the SP. I bought a Z3 Compact to replace it but it's slightly smaller than the SP and never felt right and then I broke it :crying:
When I read about the Edge Mod for the Moto Z I immediately backed it and bought a Moto Z Play.
So far I like everything but the camera on it. It has a great battery too.
My carrier had it on sale for half price so I ended up paying around $460 CAN with the Edge mod.

I request EVERY ONE SIGN THIS PETITION NOW!!!

First they sold a old hardware and software
Second they failed to fix any bugs and errors
Third they did not give a system upgrade to any market except china
Fourth Very poor after sales support
Fifth Still selling this device and fooling consumers in Asian and European markets.
Only a few people know how to switch to other ROMs, but what about the majority rest of people.

That's a punch in every devs face!
There are so many people including me that are happier with custom roms then the stock cos 12.1 which.
Thank Mr.Coldbird for marshmallow and his fp gestures, thanks to @acuicultor and @OrdenKrieger for the great kernel and device trees and all others for the variety of custom roms.
Those people who are buying this device nowadays don't care about updates or Android versions, otherwise they wouldn't buy a device which comes with Android 5.
Everybody who is aware of the Android update policy knows that every manufacturer makes their own update plan and those who want fast updates going to buy nexus or pixel phones or an iPhone
I have 2 zuk1's, both fully stock and both working as expected with only one bug. Both are suffering from the "waking up" syndrome.
The oldest zuk has been produced in Nov 2015 and since more than a year my daily driver...the second one is produced in March 2016 and in my possession since a couple of months.
I don't see any reason to complain as I knew I was buying "old" software and lets be honest, the hardware still still fairly up to date considering the price range the phone is being sold in. What you guys want is a phone with the specs of a Samsung S7 for less than 200€ new?! Do you really think that Lenovo is going to invest its time and resources in a phone which is no longer in production?
The phone's still on sale currently are NOT sold be Lenovo but people/company's who are trying to get rid of old stock...
Paid 239€ in a Electronic store. Fair price
Jau the lack of 64bit possibility worries me but otherwise it's fine.
Thanks to the great devs here it also makes me more happy than a Redmi note 2 I owned (just not the Mi5 I'm coming from) But enough OT from me
Just don't buy a Phone you don't like, there is also the web to inform yourself about possible OS updates from the Manufacturer or not etc.
But to be fair, Europe support of Lenovo/Zuk seems to be 0

[rant] Starting to hate Moto/Lenovo :(

They release new phones quicker than they release updates. Reading about the Oreo update on GSMAarena, just made my blood boil ... "That said, the Moto Z Play is unlikely to receive another update for some time (or ever)".
Yes, maybe GSMArena is wrong and we will get security fixes after the Oreo update. But so far, Moto/Lenovo has disappointed me with their slow and sparse OTAs.
Seeing how they are going to release the Moto Z3 Play soon just makes me angry. The performance increase is minimal, the battery will most likely be as small as the one in the Moto Z2 Play, or smaller.
Am I stupid to think that a new model of anything should be improved so much that owners of the current model might want to upgrade? At least after the third generation? The Z2 and Z3 series are aimed at new customers, not at owners of a Z1.
@Moto/Lenovo: Slow the f**k down! Support your cr*p with regular updates! And release new phones when technology (CPU, battery, camera ...) has improved significantly to make the next generation of phones interesting to your current customers!

Yeah the Z2 play was a dud. Take the main selling point of this phone and nerf it... the battery.
I'd be very happy though with an incremental upgrade, maybe some more RAM and a 636 CPU... but make it IP68 waterproof! So far though looks like the Z3 Play is also a dud with a 3000mah battery.
The Galaxy A7 is basically the kind of phone I'd like, but without all the Samsung bloat. Bigger battery than the Z Play and waterproof. Maybe 4GB+ of RAM would be nice though.
That's why i will not waiting for z3play and buy honor view 10. It's sad that Motorola phones not appeal anymore and hope they will make intresting phone so people again look at them.

Exactly, battery and headphone plug
I could imaging that Moto (and others!) simply want to have the newest CPU in their phones, so that they "rank better" ... on price comparison sites ... or to give salesmen a simple reason to sell "this phone over that one".
Apart from that, it doesn't make sense at all. We have Apple and Samsung as the big players. The others come up with something different every now and then. Due to their "always the newest hardware strategy", they either produce the same products as everyone else, or they kill their darlings by dropping them like a hot, half-arsed potato. In the end, only the price tag determines which phone will sell. And Moto has no way to compete against "true Chinese brands" in that respect.
Even worse, some of those "crappy Chinese brands" actually do offer more regular updates and longer support...
It's a shame that no one in the business has balls (or a uterus) and does something extraordinary and stand out from the crowd.
We got 2 OS updates on on this phone and security patches also have been coming through, what is the rant about?.... Google itself promises 2 years of updates, so we are at par with that philosophy, not behind... Infact even after releasing so many new phones after the z play, they have not forgotten it, is commendable no?

Exactly.
It got the same amount of updates as a flagship. What else do you want? Do you think Samsung is going to give Android P to Galaxy S7 users or what? You're also up to date with security patches. I can't see another big brand updating their mid-range as long as Motorola did.
OS updates end here but they will continue to provide security patches if they want. Most people upgrade after 2 years anyway.
Sorry, that is pure whataboutism. The notion that other companies don't support their products doesn't make it acceptable in any way.
I am not concerned about not getting Android P, but I would like to have Oreo supported with security fixes.
Apart from that, you really are satisfied with two years of support?! You are any phone manufacturers dream customer!
I bought my MZP in 2017, when it was still a decent phone. Therefore I got only 1 year of support. Not very impressive in my opinion.

This is another good point. We compare to other manufacturers who have super short support spans and think Motorola is doing great. None of them provide much support because they want us to buy new devices. The whole system is designed to keep people paying for new phones and stuck in expensive plans (at least in Canada it's that way). We're so happy they throw us a few crumbs we forget they're sitting at a feast, for an analogy.
Not meaning to be too negative, the phone we have works great I think. Looking at the big picture though, we're just consumers to them in the end.
I hope treble changes things up, there's hope.

Well let's see
1) whataboutism ; while it was alluded to and I don't endorse bringing others down but peers are the natural reference point , apples to apples right !
2) 1 year support and the 2 year debate: this one is a totally different discussion. I guess the topic is a rant against Motorola , so we are debating if Motorola did good or not. But the 2 year update issue is a different issue. From Google itself there is an ownership deficit with andoid, they don't feel responsible enough for it, like say apple does for iOS. In the name of open source, they have gotten away with a lot of accountability. If today Google owns up and pushes OEMs, things can change drastically, but they won't because they are happy spreading the Google ecosystem everywhere.
3) buying new phones ; this is a value debate ie did you get enough value for the money you paid, I would say a resounding yes for this phone. Well pixels and iphones have 3 yr or 5 yrs support but the damage accordingly is nuclear to the pocket
<rant>The Moto Z Play now has the April 2018 security patch along with Oreo. Motorola has not said there will be no more updates to it. It was just the musings of some blogger who happened to make assertions without any evidence. I for one enjoy the battery life of the Z Play but prefer the Z2 Play because the carrier version has an FM radio and has more built-in storage and RAM. It also has WiFi calling for T-Mobile.
I buy the Z phones primarily because of the MODS. That is what makes these phones special. Try adding battery on any other phone as elegantly? Not possible. Perhaps they will be releasing a Hi-Fi DAC mod for the Z3 Play which could give better performance than you can get inside the phone. At least with the MOD system that is possible. If they make it 64-Bit then it will probably be a part of the Android Enterprise Recommended program which the Z2 Force is a part of, and that allows for Android security updates within 90 days of release from Google, for a minimum of two years.
I would rather all the people who don't see the value of the mods buy some other phone because any manufacturer can put a bigger battery on a phone, but no one else has created a platform that allows for elegant extensions and upgrades. You can slap on a mod and get 5G service. How many other phones out here now can be 5G ready so easily? If you read about the mod documentation you will see that they are innovating in the hardware area.</rant>
@kingstu, very well stated and totally agree, love the mods and the elegant implementation, true value add

[poll] Xiaomi A2 Future, is it dead or promising

So i bought this phone since it released in my country, i bought the 6Gb ram version and i was too excited about, Android one phone with great specs according to the price, but i am a lil bit disappointed right now,
The update releases is a bit confusing as we can see what's happening with pie updates.
The development is too slow as there no working twrp and related stuff.
Forgive my ignorance as coming from HTC M8 with its big development from its early stages , this phone disappointed me, but dont get me wrong i am happy with the phone regarding its battery life what annoying me a bit but the fast charger make it up to me.
So based on ur experience guys what do u expect guys and is the fourms going to be on fire soon or is it going to be like that all along ?
its going to be alive for sure, but you won't get first-class support, also for sure. this phone is good for people who are on a budget yet want to have a fairly up-to-date software (including security updates) and don't expect pixel-level support. If you are one of these people, A2 is probably one of the best phones you can get. But if you expect a pixel-level support then you should probably go buy pixel
It will get better, but don't expect anywhere near the support your old phone had, that was a flagship and a very successful one, I don't I've tried a quarter of the roms that were available for my m7
Yu are being given more than just descent specs for a more than descent price but no updates should be fast like google pixel ... well not gonna happen
Software r&d is not cheap as yu can see many here on xda develop on in there spare time and with donations and i dont think even though xiaomi have great revenue and sales they are yet ready to speed up the process (FOR ME UPDATES ARE ALREADY FAST ENOUGH EVEN NOW BETTER THAN MY SAMSUNG GALAXY S7 THAT WAS WORTH 49999 rs)
Moral of the story is = just because yu are given good hardware at a fine price dont expect them to give yu fast software support too ( only if yu have a pixel )
Otherwise apple phones get ios for really long time( enjoy there new emoji in every damn update )

Mates i didn't expect pixel level of support at all, it just i didnt think Android One phone would get low development and update like that,
I can run Android pie on my M8 which pretty old phone now, but u cant run it on my 2018 Android one device, does that make any sense to you mates ??
On the other hand pocophone got it's official TWRP and keep being updated while the price difference is t that much though.

Why the hell are yu guys quoting me when i am making the exact same point that yu made
This is a budget phone not pixel lile ( COMPARED TO MY S7 JUST TO MAKE A POINT and even if my s7 is a flagship it gets security patches at end of each month whereas this MI A2 Gets updated on start of each month and that too sometimes more than one update )
I used to use an OPO which had and to a certain extent still has a lively developer scene (It's been a few months since the first Pie popped in the forums for it).
I don't neither expect nor foresee that sort of activity over here. This is a mid-range budget phone.
Then again, at least, bootloader unlock is hassle free.

I came from an OPO myself. And kind of disappointed with lack of development for now. It's a new phone and hopefully it'll pick up. It's a good phone don't get me but it's a "meh" or "alright" phone after a few weeks. Definitely a forgettable phone. Feel like I should've gone pocophone fone (1)
