I've tried everything on my Sprint variant S8 and the edge lighting notification will not work when the screen is off. Yes I have all notifications set to yes with edge lighting set to When Screen Is Off and I even reset my phone entirely with no luck. All I get when I receive a text is the notification sound with the flashing LED. I also tried Screen Always On and still no edge lighting. Is anyone else having this problem? Also, the lock screen doesn't come on for a few seconds showing the notification say like it would on the iPhone. Anyone with the same issues or resolutions please help !?!?
Which app are you using for the text messages? Edge lighting only works with some of the built in apps for now.
I'm using the default Samsung messaging app. It is check marked in the Edge Lighting notification apps
Edge lighting works when the screen is on but nothing when it's off
I thought the same. I can see it very quickly with Samsung messaging, but vzw message+ I can't see it

Ive noticed the same thing. It was troubling at first, but with a little fiddling around I seemed to have found the fix or problem. The screen on in pocket sensitivity is the part that's preventing the screen to turn on while in the pocket...this also includes the edge lighting when the screen is off. So the fix is here (for me at least)...
Settings---Display---*scroll to bottom*--- Keep Screen Turned off---Uncheck
Hope that helps some of you. Made an account just for this comment since it's impossible to find the answer so far.
Thanks helpneeded... tried your suggestion but still no edge lighting when the screen is off
I believe edge lighting only works when the phone screen is facing down . When you put your phone on the table put the screen down and see if it works. That's how it is on my 6 edge plus, I have that and the s8
I found one sure way to make edge lighting work for everything..bear with me though. This is retarded and ultimately this is a broken feature on the Samsung S8.
Go to the play store and buy..yes, buy "Edge Lighting" by Edge Design. The free version won't work. You are welcome to test other edge apps but this is all that worked for me. Install the paid version of Edge Lighting and set it up by enabling notification access. From here, don't bother setting any settings up in the app, they don't work yet. Irony. Somehow, edge lighting kicks the Samsung lighting into gear even though neither app works by themselves yet. Now telegram, hangouts, calls, everything..works and shows the Samsung edge light. Face up, face down, screen on or off. It all works. Don't ask me why this works..I truly don't know. Let us know your results if you guys try this or other apps. Again, samsung needs to fix this. Its half baked because it doesn't even work with a full factory reset. I'm using verizon s8 btw. There is NO customization of colors yet. All notifications are a light blue for now. Nothing we can do about that yet.
Disclaimer: I absolutely promise I'm not trying to advertise their app or make them sales. I paid for this edge app and one other (purple app icon on the play store..I forget the name but it didn't work like this one did) for my S7 because I wanted edge lights for any app I wanted, and the color I wanted.

Nope it works for any way you have the phone. There maybe another setting for you that's causing it to go crazy. Anything that can effect the screen effects this notification style...it's tricky to say the least.
Edge notifications don't work for me either - this is really disappointment. Does Samsung not bother to TEST its phones, before it releases them??
I had the same issue. I turned the feature completely off, then restart your s8. Go back into the settings and turn the feature back on selecting when you want it the feature to work. At this point restart your s8 again. Double check the feature is still check marked. This worked for me and the edge lighting works for me at all times now
As they say, RTFM. Why would you need the Edge Panel lighting while the screen was face up; you'd see the notifications on the display. The S7e and Note7 worked the same way.

The manual is wrong.
Thats new in the S8 - Edge lighning is also working when not face down!
The german manual is right here.
It says that the EDGE lightning (Seitenlicht) lights up when there are new notifications AND if the device is face down and a call is coming

You realize you're saying the exact same thing the U.S. manual is saying? Edge lighting works with more than just calls though and you can set which apps trigger it.
I mean that it does also work when the phone is not face-down
I had the same issue, use glimpse notifications from the Plat Store and it will work
Face down and restarting phone after switching feature on/off still not working. So weird the edge lighting works while the screen is on just not while it's off. Oh well, no big deal, thank god for the LED. Now we just need a hotspot hack ?

Hi,
I'm a new user to PDA's, I've never used them before and only just realising I need one to help schedule my busy days.
I have recently purchased the Magician, using it for about one and a half week I find it isnt what I expect it to be.
I am implementing at the moment between keeping a seperate PDA and a mobile phone, or to keep the Magician which has both features.
The other PDA I own is a HP HX2190, which has a bigger screen, but of course the device is much larger.
After using the Magician for just about 2 weeks I find it very troublesome and hard to use, also with some problems I've encounted and unsure of;
1)I find it annoying that I have to turn the magician on and off all the time to check for missed calls, something I've realised is that when there is an alert of something like a miss call the light on top flashes orange, but it is pretty stupid waiting every 5 seconds to see it flash the colour.
Having to turn the screen on and off all the time is rather annoying.
2)One big problem I've gotten the past few days is the alignment of the screen. For some odd reason the alignment will go crazy.
I'd click on the (X) button to close the program located on the top right corner and the volume menu would pop up. It's like it has shifted elsewhere.
I dont know what is wrong, I'd click on one thing but it would click on the other item about 2cm away. The pin point is not accurate!
I hope you guys understand what I'm talking about, cant really explain this problem.
But what's the deal and how can this be fixed?
This is the biggest problem I've been getting.
3)When a missed call is received, the screen would still be on after the call has stopped, and you're not using it at all.
If I was to put it in my pocket, and a call was not heard and missed, the screen will still be left on, there will be a chance any key will be pressed accidently while in my pocket.
Or even make a call without me knowing.
These are all I can come up with at the moment.
I'll post more when I do figure any more problems.
There are probably firmwares to download, anyone know where I can get them?
Are there any problems that are encountered with the magician?
Please list some problems that effect the use in the long term.
I'm still deciding whether to keep my single XDA, or to keep a mobile and a seperate PDA.
Any suggestions would really help.
Cheers
What about to read an instruction manual?
1. In the common phone you must turn on a display to see missed calls too.
2. The Alighment of scrren you must properly calibrate in settings menu.
3. You must check the settings menu to adjust when screen must be off if no using.
Simply investigate owner's manual and device settings! If you can't, heh, just get rid of this device.
I know about the setting of allignment, but it would work perfectly fine at one stage, precise pin point then out of the blue the screen would play up on me.
that's strange... If you already own a pda, you must know that it's a hardware problem. And it is not bacause Magician is communicator, not ppc
Just obtain a working one and enjoy. If device hardware is fine, it works good. But there always will be liitle probs, u know And this is about all devices - phones, ppcs, comms etc.
I have drew up a diagram to further explain what I'm talking about.
The red dots is the point where I press with my stylus, the blue points is where the XDA detects my point.
I've added some icons to show the trouble I'm dealing with.
I'd click on the close button to close the program on the top right corner (red dot) but it would jump to the right (about 2cm away) and open the clock menu.
So I cannot close the programs.
I click on the toolar 'just' outside the start menu button on the top right corner, I do not click in the box and it will still open the menu.
The 3 shortcut menus on the bottom are Battery Icon to show the battery life, Memory usage, and file explore.
I want to check my memory usage (red point bottom middle of the screen) and the battery icon (blue dot) would be clicked and open up rather than the memory usage I intended to click.
I then will try to close it, being imposibble because when I try to press the (x) button it would just open up the clock menu, or clock status showing date and time, sometimes it would be shifter further, so when I try to click the (x) it would open the volume menu.
I turn it off and wait for a while, it would eventually come back to normal.
A few hours later I'd want to find my mp3's, so I click on the shortcut 'file explorer' to find the files (red dot).
As I click on the red dot, same as others, the screen would detect the point on the screen about 2cm away.
Opens the memory usage menu rather than the file explorer.
This is what I've been dealing with.
At times it would be perfectly fine, then it would play up as above.

I know noobs always get flamed around forums, but I certainly know to read the manual.
Hope you guys can help.
Try to hard reset your device and do a screen alignment procedure properly. If problem remains - this is hardware problem! Maybe, the reason is extrem temperature or water, that damaged screen... The only way in this case is to bring device to service center to fix.
That may be the problem, I place my O2 in my pocket/jeans with the screen facing my leg.
If I face it the other way something can damage the screen with pressure.
Phone has not been in pocket for the past day due to a weekend, so it seems as though it is working ok.
If I am not able to place the o2 in my pocket, I dont think there is anywhere else that I can convenient place it in.
I dont like the idea of the clip wallet given.
I have my S100 now for over a year and have been using only the supplied case and never had a problem. I never like the idea of putting any phone for that matter in my pants pockets especially when wearing tight jeans.
This problem is starting to bug me out, can anyone find the reason why it's doing this?
Try draining out main your battery. Then remove the battery until the backup battery is also drained out. Then insert your main battery and charge. Do not use the magician until the main and backup battery are fully charged (green led on).
Be sure to make a backup first.
Does it actually say not to place O2 XDA's in pockets?
It is a phone, and I'd put the phone in my pocket to feel the vibration of calls when on silent.

Quite right, that's my concern also. But I have been carrying my first generation XDA (Wallaby) and now my Magician just like that all the time and never had a problem. But actually, when sitting down (and therefore putting pressure on the device because the jeans tightens) I take it out and it on a table or a car holder.
Never had a problem that was anyhow related to how I carried the device with me.
I rarely put my wallet in my back pocket because ATM and credit cards get bend, what more a Magician! I have a friend whose P910 got damaged for the same reason.

A few people here have reported the same problem, and it always was a hardware fault. So I am afraid the only solution is to exchange your device - and you really should do it, as this behaviour is not normal at all.
As for the problem of the device doing strange things in your pocket (no, not that...), you should
a) set the time-out after which the screen turns off automatically to a minimum, or
b) get ScreenGuard.
I use ScreenGuard very successfully.
Cheers
Daniel
Interesting to se this thread, i sometimes also have problems with alignment.
however, my problem can be that the device will be in portrait mode (left handed), whilst the stylus is working on right handed mode (if that makes sense), so everything is flipped around (ie I click on bluetooth and the start menu pops up).
Any ideas? This is an intermittent fault it seems

The orange blinking occurs more often when you have a missed call or message. Also, you have to press a button on a normal phone to check for missed calls and messages.

There's a registry tweak that will turn the phone off quicker if the device was woken up but nothing was pressed. You can have a different timeout for this (e.g. 10 seconds). This would also help with you turning the phone on/off to check for messages, as you could just turn it on and if no messages it'll go off on its own in a few seconds anyway.
Let me start off, I've got to say that the Touch HD is an awesome bit of kit. There's just 1 thing I don't like about it and that's the way the stylus is held in. I don't think it's held securely enough, a couple of times I have pulled the phone out of the pouch and the stylus has also managed to come out.
there is nothing that i don't like about the blackstone.....
only one thing the processor could be 5000 GHZ .......
Its not something i hate.. but its the only downside i find compared to the iPhone.. multitouch.. but then again... i knew it didnt have one.. and MY GOD this kicks iphones ass!
cheers!

Give us the menu's from WM6 instead of having to press several icons to get to the same item.
Direct to something is better than fiddling and wasting time!
The phone is the greatest, my only complaint is that it was a shock coming from the diamond as the screen on the diamond is excellent, the colors are really rich and the blacks are black where as the HD is a beautiful screen but a wee bit washed out.
After using the HD for a week now I am really happy with everything, even the screen as long as I don't look at the Diamond.
Things You Don't Like About The Touch HD

Volume bottoms is to sensitive
Back panel squirks
But i still love the phone

foolproof????
thats a kinda objective question
There hasn't been a phone made that is perfect for everybody.
Things I don't like about the touch HD
Video recording, only QVGA
Back cover, should be smooth without that metal thing
The reset button inside the cover, should be outside
The headphones that came with it are useless, to big to fit my ears
When recording calls our voice gets recorded very loud and the other person voice very quiet
Wifi is very bad, receives low signal and disconnects easily
No good video player with full hardware acceleration
The other things are great
mmm!
some are very close....
recording calls...
there has been quite alot of talk re the recording of calls....
does anyone have any really good positive recommendations????

Yes I did that but it doesn't work fine like my ETEN M700 did, I was using one FONERA www.fon.com with one 10db omni directional antenna as my home hotspot, it sends 2 SSIDs, the HD doesn't like it and disconnects, so I'm now using the wireless of other of my routers, it's one linksys WRT54GL, it doesn't have the same high range but it works.
What I don't like are:
Stylus comes out when removing from pouch.
Key buttons too small on keyboards resulting in constant incorrect key presses.
Takes too long to go back to previous screen after adjusting volume keys.
When using alphabet scroller on right edge on Contacts screen and you scroll to say 'S', the first contact beginning with S appears at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top of the screen.
Slow redraw rate of icons everytime you go to builtin programs list.
Today i noticed a wierd ticking noise when shaking my phone . It's not that loud , it's around the phone-speaker and i suspect some kind of spring from the slide , because when i hold the phone firmly in the speaker area the noise dissapears , also when sliding the screen(during the slide. when completly opened it reappears) the noise deissapear , and when i push a bit the screen in the direction that it is (forcing it to stay closed or open).
Does anyone else has this problem ? Because i don't thing that warranty will consider this as a problem , and change my phone.
The phone is not having any hardware problems , but the ticking noise just annoys me .
I believe this is just the slide mechanism.
What are you doing shaking your phone anyway?
Hmm I think I found this problem discussed b4.
The sound came from some part under the optical pad, and as I know, every X1 is.
a normal sound coming from the sliding mechanism.

Yes we all hear it, it is normal, not something broken or loose.
thanks for sharing , i also suspected the slide mecanism , but i didn't know it this sound is normal . now i feel better knowing that there is nothing wrong with my phone , but is still pretty iritating , hearing it sometimes when using the phone (voice call)
LOL=) It's the pen!
If the sound originates from the top of the phone, most definitely it's the camera; more specifically the auto focus mechanism. From what I read here on XDA, it would seem that it's not a Q.C. problem and it's normal for it to "rattle", "click", "tick" or whatever else you can make sense of it.
I've had a few devices from just about every manufacturer, and I've noticed the sound you're describing in about 30% of my devices. Some manufacturers are worse than others - like Motorola - but I've never seen a link between the "rattle" and phone malfunction. In my opinion, it's perfectly normal - best not to think about it

what i was hearing was the sliding mechanism, if you hold the 2 parts (bottom and top) and press them (the gap between them will become almost zero) the sound will disappear

i don't think so, the pen is in a fixed location, and it exactly fits there so i don't think it can move in the compartment.
Hi,
I also have this ticking noise, and has some one posted before, I found out it comes from small wheels between the screen and keyboard of the sliding mechanism.
I post here some pics that show them:

The two wheels in each side on back of the screen.
One wheel in more detail:
These wheels I believe they should run on the sides of the keyboard as I show on next picture.
I think the problem is that this wheels are loose and flying in spite of running on top of the keyboard. I also note that my screen is not totally stable, specially when open, and is a bit loose in relation to the X1 body.
I believe that this wheels should be there for stabilizing the screen and to give a smoother sliding effect, which I find not very the case of my X1.
I also think it's not normal to put wheels that are never grounded (as far as I can see on my X1) and only are there for making noise.
An easy way to check and patch the problem is to put two or three slices of paper stacked over the sides of the keyboard (on the red lines of last picture). In this way you fill the gap between the wheels and the keyboard body and the noise will stop. Besides the slide is smoother and screen is more stable.
I think this is a major fabrication issue, because apparently, at least I couldn't find anyone that doesn't have this problem.
Anyone doesn't have this issue on X1?
I believe that som X1's have the wheelrattle, but not all that rattle are because of the wheels.
There's an example on how my phone sounds after the second repair of the batterycompartment crack.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=482022
Guys!
Its just the sound of the sort-of-free volume/camera buttons
If you just touch both during shacking, you will make sure that there is no tick sound
I guess
nu it's the wheels guiding the screen. if you press the screen up and down , you will see that the noise dissapears. it's as clear as possible explained in the pictures above

the screen is amazing with extremely popping colors unfortunatly the black level is beyond terrible and worse than anything i have ever seen before (turning down the brightness dosn't do much and anything other than maxiumum brightness is bad)
vieweing angles are also dissapointing
i am not sure if i got the right or wrong screen (screen lottery) but i notice NO green tint blue and red looks perfectly clear
speaker placement is awkward as i manage to block it when playing games not a huge deal but i would have preferd 4 speakers one on each side of the phone to use some kind of surround sound
theres also a weird thing that happened yesterday i used it then suddenly the screen turned black (showing a black picture) the phone was at this point entirely frozen i had to reset (vol up-power) which turned it off when i turned it on the screen was yet again black after like 4 min it finally showed the boot animation
now it takes about 4 min every time i start it for the boot animation to start
i also tried it's waterproofing (made sure all flaps were firlmy sealed) after i got it out of the water (i tried the speakers under water) the screen wouldn't work after i dried it off it still wouldn't work it pressed random buttons and was very unresponsive i had to restart the phone for it to work again (is this normal)
other than these two things i had no issues with this phone i am very happy with it battery life does seem weak though took about 4 hours i think for it to drop to 40% from 100%

theres also a weird thing that happened yesterday i used it then suddenly the screen turned black (showing a black picture) the phone was at this point entirely frozen i had to reset (vol up-power) which turned it off when i turned it on the screen was yet again black after like 4 min it finally showed the boot animation
now it takes about 4 min every time i start it for the boot animation to start
i also tried it's waterproofing (made sure all flaps were firlmy sealed) after i got it out of the water (i tried the speakers under water) the screen wouldn't work after i dried it off it still wouldn't work it pressed random buttons and was very unresponsive i had to restart the phone for it to work again (is this normal)
other than these two things i had no issues with this phone i am very happy with it battery life does seem weak though took about 4 hours i think for it to drop to 40% from 100%

Turn on the optimized back light option , it will solve the black screen issue at boot animation.

Not it doesn' affect but some effect on whiteness level on screen.
Turning it on removed the black screen issue from boot, try it once if you still get it turn it off again.

I‘ll really appreciate if anyone can explain or possibly fix the damage of the AMOLED display/screen on my Samsung Galaxy S8. The screen has a few odd characteristics after it was accidentally damaged by heat. (Because I put hot takeway food into my bag that has my phone in it.) The screen started showing the following problems after the accident.)
1) the screen has a permanent yellowish/greenish tint
This tint is visible even in the boot up device name & Samsung logo screen, so I don’t think it’s caused by software. This makes the colours on the screenlook less vibrant and less saturated.

2) the screen cannot display pure black.
In the black background of pictures in gallery and especially while charging when powered off, it is easy to see that what’s black is now gray. (Refer to photos below) When the phone is off, the bezel and the display is the same black color. When the display is on, the grey color makes the top and bottom bezel of the phone visible. On all Samsung AMOLED display, the black part is not supposed to light up because it’s an OLED display, but now it appears like an LCD with backlight bleed.
3) always on display doesn’t work anymore and show something like a static screen during always on display.
(refer to the video:
)
The clock and home button doesn’t show and the screen will show that weird static effect slowly. (takes around 30 seconds)
4) the screen is unusable at 20 to 80% brightness
(refer to the video:
)
At 20-80% brightness, everything on the screen become blurry and any animation causes ghosting of the image. On a non white image, the display will form horizontal white lines across the screen, obscuring the content on the screen. Strangely, none of the problems occur when the screen is at 0-20% and 80-100% brightness, the display appears normal and perfectly usable.
(This is the dealbreaker that forced me get a new phone to replace this S8)
Looks like a blown driver(s).
Try clearing the system cache and a hard reboot but I doubt this will help.
A hard reset will do nothing.
I had sunlight + charging blow out the drivers on my S4+
$hit happens...

I was hoping that the display could be recalibrated for the brightness and color issues, but I don't know if the display itself or the driver embedded in the motherboard is physically damaged. Replacing either component is close to the resell value of a good condition S8, so I don't plan on doing that.

I assume the damaged drivers are on the display assemby* but not sure if they're drivers present there.
It seems the logical place to put them though.
White papers for these devices seem nonexistent. There should be service manuals but I've never seen one.
Blowing out a display sucks...
* most likely fully integrated into the display itself.
