I just switched from the pixel to the S8, been using it since Thursday. Is it just me or is the RAM management not as good as people say? I've seen multiple youtube reviews who have the same model as me (US T-Mobile variant) where they had 10 apps open and none of them refreshed upon reopening. When I do the same thing, 6 or 7 out of my 10 apps refresh everytime... Is there a setting where I can change the limit of background processes or something? It just doesn't make sense
Is nobody else having this issue?
I notice this happening a lot now especially in apps like facebook and chrome.
Happening all the time for me since the Nougat update. Worse yet, apps are getting completely killed. Not even in the switcher any more. Did not have this issue on my S7 Edge on Marshmallow but had it there as well after it got updates to Nougat. The S8+ just continued the same trend.
same issue on the S8+ ... quite annoying. If anyone has any ideas how to improve, please share.
Now even 3 gb ram phones are keeping more apps in the memory
I still haven't test it as i am waiting for a cover to take it out the box.
But is it possible its a configuration to kill the apps in background to make better the battery's life? Check in developer or in any place you can just in case. If not, it might be a bug then :/
Having the same issues. Was expecting better than management when they already increased the ram memory.
Just used the phone for 2 days and the service apps takes up 2gb ram.
What's the point of increasing the ram when the service apps already taking up half of it?
And it kills the app every time I switch apps. How annoying...

I've had my Galaxy S6 since April 24th and it's one of the slowest phones I've had since 2012 while navigating. The phone also infuriates me when it closes an application that was recently launched causing the application to refresh I open up pandora than after going to the home screen receiving a notification sometimes causes pandora to close due to the aggressive memory management. The phone stutters so often when navigating and touchwiz also refreshes often when going home. As soon as I install a different launcher of course the navigation stutter disappears but the aggressive memory management is annoying. Most of the time I feel like I'm using a cheap android phone. I find the phone with only 300-700MBs of ram free while my Nexus 5/HTC One m8/m9 both have 1.2GBs free most of the time. I don't think it's fair to us consumers to suffer because they aren't able to make the correct changes to make a light UI. Watching a ton of reviews and comparisons non of the reviewers speak about the stutter/memory management.
I love the screen, opening multiple applications at the same time, finger print scanner, the build quality, camera, and the loud single speaker
I do not want to root the phone because I purchased it mainly because of MST when using Samsung Pay which Samsung still didn't release. I already upgraded to 5.1.1 to get rid of the LED always on issue.
I promised myself after selling my Note 2 in 2013 I will purchase another Samsung device once they release it with another Exynos chipset because it was one of the smoothest phones I've owned.
I own a HTC One M9 due to working at retail I was able to get a discount when attending their event. I had a ton of issues when I first purchased it at launch. It felt very slow, the battery would take 8 hours to charge until the phone cooled down. It wouldn't charge unless the phone wasn't being used. HTC addressed those issues instantly. I believe it's the fastest phone currently out on the market but I don't like the display, lacks MST, the IR blaster is weak but it can record. The camera requires too many manual settings to adjust to bright lights.
No phone is perfect...
I agree with the memory management; even 3 gb is not enough for this device with Samsung bloatware. Cyanogenmod is around 250 mb in size and Samsung Rom is nearly 2 gb; I understand the necessity for fingerprint reader etc but anyhow it just tells me Samsung is not doing it's best to optimize this device.

Is the only issue you have now the memory management? Hopefully Samsung will address this once the S6 Edge Plus (or whatever it's gonna be called) is released, they will issue a fix for the S6 as well (though this should have been done already months ago).
Tbh this feels like the slowest phone I've used too. There's times where I'll just use my m8
I've had mine since April 22, and have had no slowdowns or lags even with the stock launcher. It's been even faster and fluider since the 2 updates I've gotten on the AT&T.

As someone who comes from OnePlusOne, I love the S6. It's rooted with custom room, and this thing flies. Don't have any problems with ram management since I use greenify on most apps.
The only slight "problem" is my the battery usage and somewhat unresponsive display.

Many people don't notice the aggressive memory management until it is pointed out. This is the first phone I won't be rooting due to the features I would be losing if I did. There are a ton of roms out I noticed with a ton of free ram and I'm sure the phone flies but using the stock t-mobile firmware with almost 90% of the bloatware disabled it stills is sluggish when using TouchWiz launcher.

Stock ROM, rooted, no XPOSED
My RAM usage is constantly over 90%. Phone also lags from time to time. Sometimes music player apps even get force closed due to the phone's poor RAM management. Already did factory reset twice, nothing has changed. Not sure if I'm the only one who's having this issue. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Android along with all modern OS use all the RAM they have available. This isn't WinXP days were things go to swap space and severely slow the OS down in the process. Unused items close in the background when RAM is needed. This is a feature, not a bug.

phone has 2.5gb ram not 3gb and onlly 500 to 700 mb free generally, only google play services and google apps like google, map and android wear and all keeps over 1gb of total 2.5gb ram, this phone has really poor ram management

Very true, when I had this phone I didn't even enable the Motorola functions to keep it at 1.6GB of RAM usage and I still thought that was extremely high...

I'm noticing the same. Side by side with my trusty Nexus 6, and both having 3GB of ram, the N6 will keep apps open longer than my MXPure. N6 is showing 1.6 GB of memory available while the MxPure has only 700MB. It sucks because i stopped using my GS6edge for that same reason. I just want to be able to consistently swap between 4 different apps and not have them reload...

Don't be too alarmed. It's a great phone. I still like it more than my S6edge and Nexus 6. Im hoping with the Marshmallow update that maybe they'll fix some of these issues. *fingers crossed*

I wonder what the most Ram-Hogging apps are on this phone? Any tests done yet about that?
Are people experiencing forced reloading / refreshing ? I've not had any issues with my European Style.
Compared to the S6 Edge (I was the creator of the first aggressive ram thread on the S6 Edge) its like night and day and easily comparable to my Nexus 6.

I've noticed exactly the same. I also came from a Nexus 6. Yesterday I did a side-by-side test with the Nexus 6, and opened the same apps. The Moto X had to reload way earlier.
Checking the memory usage in Settings -> Apps -> Running showed that "System Memory" took up around 160Mb on the Nexus 6 but 1.2Gb on the Moto X!! This is with exactly the same apps running (apart from the Moto stuff of course).
It does seem strange that the system would use that much more memory. In many aspects the phones are the same (screen size in pixels, installed memory size etc.). This is one of the most annoying things about the Moto X, and the only reason that I am considering sending it back.
I'm really hoping that Marshmallow fixes this in some way.
Unused ram is wasted ram... Watch videos of the s6 ram management. S6 might open apps faster than moto x pure on first launch, but moto x reopens them much faster.
^^ The S6 ram management is terrible even if there are only 4apps open, all apps will reload back from the start.

That's the point I'm making... S6 I believe has lots of free ram. I just want others to realize, more free ram might be an aggressive method of ram management. I find the mxp to be great with it.

No the S6 doesn't have a lot of free ram. When you open application manager and check ram through there and click show cached processes it has very little ram free. Smart manager Samsung own manager is deceitful.

High RAM use has not impacted my phones performance. My understanding is that the phone uses all the ram on purpose to speed things up.
My biggest worry was that high RAM use would bump out my automation tools (tasker), and keep them from triggering which would force me to put them in foreground mode, but I have not had to do this, tasker always triggers fine, even with ram at 100%.
It is frustrating when you're using Chrome and you tab out of Chrome to use another app and then tab back in and it has to reload the web page. I wish I had the ability to set the priority on things that I would like to have stay in memory and not reload.
Total RAM will almost always appears to be less than what the phone is described as having. The kernel has settings that keep certain amounts tucked away for system specific tasks and makes it unavailable to the rest of the OS. On the Spectrum we were able to go from about 700MB, to 820MB available by tweaking these settings. I imagine it won't be much harder in the MXP.
The main problem isn't low free RAM, as many have said, that is a good thing - lots of cached processes/Activities will shrink relaunch times.
The issue is that, at least compared to the Nexus 6, the Moto X is clearly terminating Activities way more aggressively, and it's really annoying.
I can't even run 4 apps without the first one restarting. It's infuriating.
Preparing to get a new phone soon,
this killapp concern now becomes my last question before getting X Style, or the ultimate deal breaker.....
Really hope to hear more feedback from users,
since I play games that loads for some time at startup, browse websites with lengthy pages (especially novels...)
So a system killing either of these tabs will be a disaster for me.
Actually it doesn't have to be on par with nexus5/6, but at least it should be within acceptable range in terms of kill time.
Been running my Axon on and off for a week (not yet my daily driver due to being lazy with backing up my old phone)... Anyway one thing I have noticed is that the phone seems to be always running at over 50% RAM usage. If I launch one app - or anything else - and then clear all it will revert to running at a variable 1.6 to 2GB of 'available RAM.
Is this normal?

Since 4GB is supposed to be 'wayyy' more than enough (as reviews on the OnePlus3 naysayers would have me believe) I don't expect to have an out of the box phone running at more than 50% RAM usage - this doesn't make sense to my non-technical self. On my i9300 (Galaxy S3) I run CyanogenMod 13 and that OS runs at 260MB of RAM vs 850MB on the Axon! Can someone explain?
I'm running the B3 update but had this before I applied it.
I am having some other connectivity issues and am considering sending this unit back for exchange. It's just hard to tell when I don't know what 'normal' is for this phone.
I want to love this phone. I just need it to love me!

I need to restart my Axon 7 (A2017G) every two days or I will get a laggy UI, it's a ram problem too. So we're probably in the same boat. I hope they'll fix it in the next update (which comes after the bootloader unlock thingy if I'm right?)

Yes bootloader unlock is being currently worked on, then an update after that.
RAM management in Android isn't about a predefined amount. You're using way more with the Axon 7 than the S3 because there is way more available. If it's there why not use it to get a better experience ?
Altyough, i haven't noticed this laggy ui issue...

I agree with this MiFavor is crap when it runs for a longer time. I gets laggy on the second day. One has to reboot to get a smooth system again.
While on my old phone with CM and 4GB Ram it stays blazing fast after a week without reboot.
We can only hope CM isn't to far away.
So, reading between the lines here, you guys. Think it's software rather than hardware?
I'm just building an evidence base to warrant an exchange. Although the prospect of a two month wait leaves me reluctant.

It sure is software. 4gb ram is more than enough. Really. It's just that MIfavor likes ram and eats it like chocolate.

I guess what I really was getting at is how likely is it that the physical RAM is faulty rather than the software being RAM hungry. I ask as it seems my phone is a bit flaky in a few areas and I wonder if it's just like a b-grade item.
But take all the points on board that most likely software. How would I be able to rule out any physical RAM antics?

Look at the chipset. It's an snapdragon 820 which specifies the use of LPDDR4 dual channel.
OEM's usually receive a list of tested and recommended RAM chips from the chipset manufacturer.
No OEM who's right in their mind is going to use cheap RAM for a device that needs to survive at least 3 years of usage. Also less likely is that low powered ram is going to become faulty in a time frame under 10 years.
I plan and build enterprise servers on daily basis. I can a sure you it's software RAM management that is the issue.

Sorry for digging the grave, but all I want to say is that even today my Axon 7 with Android Nougat is having memory leak after 2 to 3 days usage. I can't switch between apps properly without them crashing and having to restart completely. But there is good news. According to somebody from ZTE, when the Axon 7 is getting Android 8 (Oreo), though only the US model has been mentioned, the MiFavor is going to be removed and the OS is going to be more or less stock-ish. Which would also mean that hopefully the memeory leakage will be almost gone. Also, hopefully, the EU model will get the same experience. 4GB RAM and memory leak is a bad joke.
i used to have the same issues and what i did is i switched to other launcher instead of using MiFavor... and it solved me lag features and i probably need to reboot my phone once a while when i got unresponsive / slow phone wake... then it back to normal again. But again its still doesn't solve my phone battery drain issue... my phone only can last me 6am to 10pm with normal usage (surfing internet, wifi, youtube, emails, whatsapp and reading novels... no bluetooth and no gaming and no song played).
I'm currently using Lawnchair Launcher and even with Lawnfeed plugin allowing the Google Now page from the left, my phone is very responsive and rarely needs a restart. Appcrash is quite rare.
I recommend Lawnchair if you would like a functional and close to stock (but improved) experience.
I used to use Smart Launcher Pro but that started getting a bit fat, as most apps do over time. Feature bloat always slows them down as they get developed.

Have you tried completely reinstalling the system? It fixed my drain and also some random reboots that I couldn't get rid of even by updating. Just install Lineage (don't forget abt the universal bootloader and modem), then boot it up and use it a couple minutes (if you want, you can check if you have that same battery drain in Lineage), then follow a guide to go back to stock (if A2017G, I made one; if A2017U, you can use DrakenFX's back to stock files).
Hi all, I am having a really annoying issue with my new yoga pro 3. It keeps killing my screen dimmer app that is running in the background after a few minutes of use. I assume its doing it to free up RAM but I have checked available RAM when it happens and its usually over 500mb free. I can just be watching youtube with the screem dimmer app running and it will still kill it. Does the tablet come with some kind of stock app killer/memory optimizer app from lenovo? I have the app set to be a perm notification which I thought would help but it doesnt. Any way to resolve this?

PS. Is there a way to lower the stock brightness lower than the standard 0% (which is not that low for pitch dark room after sleeping, still blows my eyes out) if i root?
Hi. The yoga tab 3 pro has some serious issues with the kernel hogging ram, lenovo doesn't seem to give a hoot!
I cant say too much about the screen dimming apps or if root will help as mine is in for repair.
The thing that made my tablet usable and stop killing all the apps was to run it with the data partition unencrypted. Makes an amazing difference to the machine.

I just saw they oddly released a new 4gb ram tablet with the exact same name and ****, really odd they did a refresh withotu telling aonyone. well on a whim since mine is still within its return window I ordered the 4gb ram one. I am assuming the extra ram will make a huge difference, if not i will send it back and keep the cheaper 2gb ram version and try to root/decrypt the data. Dont want to do that if i am going to maybe return it.
Seems it got a bump in the cpu too (small one 8500 to 8550 atom)
I should say nowadays(2019) the 4G RAM is far more NOT enough. I have bought non-notch pixel3 and disappointed with the RAM management, the background only can hold 4-5 apps as the maximum amount and if exceed the apps will be killed automatically. Actually, I've used Stock Android system from nexus 1, I could never face the RAM issue before, I don't know that's because of the expanding of the apps or something, but Android Pie is really performance bad in this aspect. As I concerned this is such a big problem I returned the pixel3 to Google. Now I bought the pixel 2XL again, I think it could be better than p3 in RAM management, but I am wrong. The most significant problem is when you open the camera app and then switch to another app which you opened before, there is 90% possibility that the app could be killed such as play store and wechat. Thus I guess it is the fundamental issue caused by Android Pie. Today I heard my friend told me that the new update possibly solve this issue to some extent, I tried yet and the background situation is really getting better than before. When I open the camera and take pics for 3 min and then back to another app, this app will not be killed. What do you guys think of this update? What do you think of the RAM issue? Do you think 4G RAM is fair enough still or not? Let us discuss. Forgive my bad English grammar.
