Is hotspot/tethering option missing on all us carrier in the settings? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Is hotspot/tethering option missing on all us carrier in the settings I'm using sprint version & it's not here at all...this phone is useless 2 me if I can't find a way to fix this.

https://www.xda-developers.com/thre...ickbaity-tricks-for-your-new-galaxy-s8-or-s8/

Hey man did this work? I haven't gotten my S8 in the mail yet so I can't test it...

Mobile Hotspot and Tethering is available on the T-Mobile version by default, both in the settings menu and in quick launch

I have the verizon model and the hotspot option is available and working. Was not hidden.

Available in the settings and quick settings in the AT&T S8

This was a pleasant surprise for me, since AT&T had it removed from the quick settings on my S6.

Tethering Switch
by the way, if you want a really good "Hotspot Widget" that ACTUALLY works...and I literally tried probably 90% on the Play store and ONE did finally work...
Tethering Switch
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gr.java_conf.taketake.tethering&hl=en
DID work. It doesn't bring you to the HotSpot Settings first, and then you would have to turn on the HotSpot manually...this does it quickly, shows that it is enabled.

This didn't work for me the link, the missing hotspot seems to be a sprint thing are you using sprint?

I tried this but didn't work for me with AT&T. I have a Tethering shorcut, but it takes you to the hotspot settings to turn it on manually like you mentioned. So I was excited to try this app out, however after I installed it, it just says it's Enabled (but it's not) and then when I tap it again it says Enabled again, not Disabled. Unless I go into my settings and turn it on, then the app will say Disabled (but doesn't really). So I guess I'll stick with what I have for now.

Hey I ended up returning my S8. I apologise for putting this info out about the Tethering app. It works perfectly on all my other ROMS. It is the only "widget" type app that worked on my LG G5 on stock rooted FW on MM. Anyway, I am not sure if you guys got Tethering to work on Verizon or whatever, but I had no issues with it on T-Mobile... However this app didn't work on T-Mobile on my S8 even.

Buy from Samsung?

You didn't by any chance purchase the phone directly from Samsung did you? I had the exact same problem with an S8 purchased directly from Samsung (got the free Gear VR promo) and I have Sprint.
There was no hotspot option anywhere in the setup menus. And of course, I did not notice this until 2 weeks later when I was on a trip. The hotel WiFi was messed up and I needed to use hotspot. It's not that it did not work, there was no option at all in Setup for Hotspot and Tethering.
I talked to Sprint, took it to a Sprint store for help, and talked to Samsung tech support. Nothing they all tried fixed it. Both Sprint and Samsung suggested the phone might be defective and I should pursue getting a replacement. That didn't make sense to me because WiFi and Cell Data were working fine, and hotspot is just software.
My fix was to do a full Factory Reset and then set it all up again. Tedious, but when it came back up, the Hotspot and Tethering option were there and it works perfectly now.

Recent update messed it up again?
Tried the adb method of Get/Push revealing Hotspot via Quick Tiles. Didn't work.
Any other ideas for regaining hotspot on the device? Without rooting?
Current date: Jan 7 2018.

i have same problem too, waiting for update

I tried that https://www.xda-developers.com/thre...ickbaity-tricks-for-your-new-galaxy-s8-or-s8/ but I cant even try itcoz I get "because an app etc about some permission", I tried to disable so many cant figure it out
So how does one Quick Toggle Tether? I use it all the time in my car

I searched around before deciding to make a new thread. Did not see anything specific to what I had a question about, unless it is buried deep in another thread.
Is there a suggested de-bloat list for the Verizon Note 3 running on the OB6 Lollipop firmware? For NON-ROOTED phones.
What I have turned off so far has not caused any issues seen yet.
I would like to make sure that the packages that track data usage are turned off, as well as any apps that report back to Verizon.
Would greatly appreciate if someone could post even a partial list to get this started.
I would also like to add that I am using the free version of FoxFi and tether is working!
You install FoxFi, then when you try to check the start tether box for the first time, it will make you setup a lock screen pin/pattern. After that it will install a certificate.
Once you have that done, when you try to enable tether again, it pops up a message that will take you to the Default built in tether. Once you click to enable that, tether starts working.
Here is something odd I noticed.
You can go back into the FoxFi app once you are tethered and working, then turn off tether WITHIN the FoxFi app. The default hotspot app remains enabled and continues to work.
Anyone else notice this? Also wondering if the FoxFi data limit is still imposed after you turn the tether off in its app.

Unless you are on a grandfathered unlimited data plan, Verizon's Hotspot should already be usable even without WiFi. Last I saw...all Verizon tiered data plans included hotspot.

Does foxfi work!!!?

On the grandfathered unlimited data plan Verizon.
There have been several articles saying that Foxfi would not work on 7.0+ without root. I'm hoping (praying!) that there is a fix. 2 Phones arriving tomorrow, but without tethering they will have to get returned.
Can you not just use Android's built in hotspot? Or do they strip it out?

Verizon charges extra to use a hotspot on the grandfathered unlimited data plan. Verizon simply sucks.

There's no charge to use a hotspot on T-Mobile. I'm on the 6 GB plan with rollover, which as a heavy wifi user I have every month.
They will throttle you if you try to use your hotspot for big downloads.
using pdanet with foxfi, no issues.

For me the answer is sadly -No. Foxfi installed fine and does work in Bluetooth mode (Edit: USB mode working too). When I activate hotspot, it installs a certificate, attempts to turn the Hotspot on, then goes into a loop of certificate install, attempt to turn on, repeat. VZW UDP

I was concerned about the Verizon model because doesn't TMobile native hotspot works regardless i.e. it's included in your plan were on Verizon it's not.

Thanks for the info. Since OP question was for phones on Verizon UDP, I wanted to make sure he got an answer that applied to him/her. Hopefully they find a way around this for those of us on Verizon, but that probably will have to wait for root.
I saw a workaround people got working on the Pixel. Would anyone with a Verizon V20 be willing to test this?
Would anyone like to try bypassing the verizon tether subscription check by option 1: installing network signal refresher, refresh signal and immediately turning on hotspot while refreshing. or option 2: turn on airplane mode then off and hit hotspot icon before it recaptures the signal.

It was in the quote on my post. I had a feeling I didn't make that obvious enough so apologies. Its this: "Would anyone like to try bypassing the verizon tether subscription check by option 1: installing network signal refresher, refresh signal and immediately turning on hotspot while refreshing. or option 2: turn on airplane mode then off and hit hotspot icon before it recaptures the signal."
Pixel owners have reported option 1 working for them. Hopefully it can work here too.

I emailed foxfi and asked if they were working on compatability with the v20. They replied that foxfi software will not work with this phone. Did not indicate that it would work in the future. Not good.

From what I have seen fox fi only works on Samsung phones now. When I had my Verizon unlimited data plan. After an update I want to say about a year ago no Verizon phone that wasnt Samsung didn't work. My Samsung phones I had up to the point they took away my unlimited data fox fi worked flawlessly. So doubt the v20 would work.

Foxfi / Pda net

Does anyone know if the usb/ or hotspot of foxfi/pda net or other non native teathering apps work on the z force droid? ive been on unlocked and rooted phones for a while but i'm just not seeing anything that i want. i bought a oneplus 3 then found out it didn't have the lte bands for verizion. derp. but i think id go back to a locked phone for this modular deal as long as i could still teather with pda net. cuz i ant pay'n no 30 bucks for Verizon to "unlock" the capability of my phone. pffffffftttttttttt.

Both bluetooth and USB work, but WiFi requires a mobile hotspot plan (which I don't have, so I can't test).
If you are the only one on your plan, go prepaid, I dont pay extra and the stock tethering under settings works just fine

I searched for the same, tried a number of apps, tried all of these recommended root apps & protocols ended up with the same disappointing result. Most of it just didn't work or no one could provide the necessary tools in proper sequential steps.
With you phone powered on remove your sim card. Go to Mobile hot spot & tethering, activate blue tooth tethering.wait a few minutes put your sim back in. you should now be able to pair devices with your phone and share its internet connection..

Found this in the other threads regarding hotspot. If you download "Network Signal Refresher Lite" from 8JAPPS in the playstore you can use native tethering. Just open the app and hit refresh and the moment you lose service drag down the quick tiles and tap the hotspot button. Been using this on my Moto Z Droid for the past few days and it works perfectly

Use Network signal refresher
Does anyone know of any workarounds? Network Signal Refresher stopped working for me with Nougat as well.
Yesterday they had an update for Network Signal Lite to version 5.0. Didnt work for me.
Today they have another update to version 5.1 hoping it fixes the issue. Just figured I would share.
i take it popping the sim doesn't work as well then. seams as if they might have closed the "if not able to call home let hotspot on anyway" bug then.

Activate WiFi Calling/ Encryption, Honor 8 Nougat (No Root)

So I've always thought WiFi Calling was interesting and when I bought this phone I knew there was no WiFi calling. Here is a method to activate WiFi calling. not sure if it works though as I have international data plans + calling.
You do this at your own risk.
1. Download Nova Launcher from the Play store.
2. Once installed add the activities widget to whatever home screen you like.
3. A window will open. Scroll all the way down to settings open it.
4. From there start scrolling until you see WiFi Calling with WiFi Calling settings right under it and long press either of them.
5. Congrats you have made it to the WiFi calling screen all you do now is hit that switch!
Encryption-
1. Do the same up until number 3.
2. click on settings and scroll until you find Encrypt Phone.
3. Do a long click and a screen will pop up and it will say something like make sure you're at 80 percent with the charger plugged in...etc
NOTE- I have not tested this option so proceed with caution.
I'll put some screenshots for those who want to see it first.
This also works to get encryption surprisingly.
If this helps you make sure to hit Thanks!
I take no responsibility if you choose to do this and end up damaging your device. You do this at your own risk!

If the carrier supports WiFi calling then it should work. I'm not too sure. Give it a try and see if it works if it doesn't then you can just turn it off. It should also work on any model but I only have FRD-L14 to test it with.
Just curious, have you tried to use the default launcher after you enabled wifi-calling in Nova? Will this feature still work in that case? This sounds really interesting...

Turns out, this doesn't work on my phone (FRD-L04) with T-mobile. I followed your instructions to enable the Wifi-calling setting with Nova launcher and then restarted the phone to make sure everything resets as the setting defined. Then I put the phone in the Airplane mode with only wifi signal available. Called a number for a quick test, but it asked me to connect to a cellular signal or turn off the Airplane mode first. T-mobile should have the Wifi-calling enabled on their end, and I am using their prepaid plan right now. I guess the only reason why it didn't work is Huawei has other hidden settings disabled this function at the root (not sure on the software or hardware level, though).
Let me know if anyone can make it work truly. Thanks!

You can't use WiFi calling while in airplane mode as long as you have bars it should work.
Ex. Say you're in Mexico and you got WiFi then you turn on WiFi and you should technically be able to get calls like if you where in the US.

Gotcha. Your method is similar to what OnePlus One people did before, and yields similar result--not really working. I guess we have to wait for Huawei to implement some function in their future EMUI release. They claimed they had a plan for EMUI 5 but not in this release in reality. Seems Huawei people are not in a hurry, possibly because the Chinese market doesn't have the demand for wifi calling.

That's true. I kinda didn't expect much from it but it will most likely be coming in a future update anyways
Using FDR-L14 with TMobile and enabling the WiFi Calling doesn't seem to do anything here as well.
That said, I am super excited to see that Huawei/Honor working on this!!!!!
My understanding is that Wi-Fi calling functionality is a combination of the radio + kernel. It's why AOSP-based ROMs have never been able to get Wi-Fi calling or SMS working, they don't have the closed-source drivers needed to make it happen. So in essence enabling it via a Menu item is simply toggling a UI switch with no back-end code to actually make the calling work.

1.) I bought Honor 8 with Nougat
2.) Called my service provider Ultra Mobile (piggy backs on T-Mobile) to enable WIFI calling, they took my E911 address and enabled it.
3.) Installed Nova
4.) Turned the WIFI calling switch to ON
5.) It didnt work in Airplane mode, it didn't work when I have WIFI and no cell reception. Not able to make calls.
This was already discussed in another thread a few weeks ago and no it definitely does not work it's just a toggle switch in settings Wi-Fi calling is not enabled on this phone. I personally tested it on AT&T sim using wifi in my basement where I can't receive a signal and multiple people tested it on T-MOBILE.

Note 8 hotspot hack - grandfathered unlimited Verizon

I found a trick that works to enable the hotspot if you have an unlimited plan with no hotspot included. It works on my Verizon Note 8.
You follow everything in the video, except you only disable the red "mobile hotspot and tethering " app. Not the others.
It helps if you have Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot in the quick swipe down menu of your phone. Once you set up the wrong passworded Wi-Fi all you have to do is toggle them in the drop down. It's easy and fast.
Let me know if the link doesn't work.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...CC4wAw&usg=AFQjCNGLD66UrxdFo9tyLyXax3CAc0inCg
No go. I just get this error message no matter what when the hotspot is disabled - "All apps associated with this action have been turned off, blocked, or are not installed."
On mine I have Wi-Fi sharing enabled in the hotspot settings and also make sure you only disable the one app, not all 3 like the video. Hope that helps. Not sure if it'll make a difference.
Attached a picture of the package disabler.
I thought I had wifi sharing on already, but I guess not. That did it, thank you!!
not sure if this will work for Verizon but I found this method on galaxy s8+ and works on sprint note 8.
Hotspot hack works here as well. Seems easier than the other method.
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite
2. Search for LTEfunctionality
3. Click on com.test.LTEfunctionality
4. Launch
5. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting
6. Add " ,dun " to APN2 LTE and EHRPD internet under APN type. That line should read default, mms, dun when you finish.
7. Native Hotspot should work. You may have to do this hack again if you update Profile.

2. Search for LTEfunctionality
3. Click on com.test.LTEfunctionality
4. Launch
5. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting
6. Add " ,dun " to APN2 LTE and EHRPD internet under APN type. That line should read default, mms, dun when you finish.
7. Native Hotspot should work. You may have to do this hack again if you update Profile. XDA-Developers Legacy app

I have a VZW N8 and nothing happens when I try to launch com.test.LTEfunctionality. I tried to modify the APN settings through ADB already, and that didn't seem to take either, so I think Verizon just has the APN settings locked up pretty tight.
Do you guys have carrier locked or unlock? I still have unlimited from 2009 and the hot spot works just fine without any of this on an unlocked version....

I'm on the locked VZW, but also still have the grandfathered unlimited.
If I knew that workarounds would be available for all the network specific features, I would have definitely preferred unlocked.
Though I would not have gotten anywhere near the deal I got for the locked VZW...
So in an effort to make this as convenient as possible, I made a Bixby quick command to perform the necessary actions.
First off, I had to install the app WIFI Prioritizer and set the wrong-passworded network as #1 priority, with auto switch on. My other wifi networks all have auto switch off.
Quick command as follows:
1- Turn off wifi
2- Turn on wifi
3- Turn on hotspot
4- Turn off wifi
The timing of Bixby's execution seems perfect, however, there's a big caveat...
It seems wifi-sharing is turned off every time after disconnecting from a wifi network (including just turning wifi off when connected to a network).
I have not figured out any way to have Bixby turn wifi sharing back on.
So basically, unless you never connect to wifi, the quick command won't work without also manually turning on wifi sharing.
If anybody has any suggestions to deal with the wifi sharing issue, please let me know!
I have the Verizon version of the phone. Which is technically unlocked but with the Verizon firmware. If it's like the vzw s8 then we should be able to flash the unlocked firmware to it and the hotspot will just work. But the Verizon firmware locks down the hotspot unless you pay, or find a hack around it.
Dr, so just to confirm you have the carrier specific locked version. That would explain why you need to do this work around.
I have a non carrier specific unlocked phone on VZW network which activates the hot spot just fine without any of this.
Only reason I'm posting is to help pin down who needs this mod.
Im also used to flashing the hotspot apps when I root a new phone, which is over of the main reasons I root however I don't need it with note 8.
Does an unlocked phone on Verizon still get throttled after 15GB of Hotspot Data? I had been using an S3 with Foxfi and never got a message about using Hotspot Data till yesterday. Was looking at possibly getting another unlocked Note8 to serve as a Hotspot if I wouldn't get hit after 15GB on Verizon's new unlimited plan.

Once I dl'd PDP from their page I could disable, but then I cannot select Mobile hotspot.
The best solution for Verizon phones is to flash the unlocked firmware onto your phone. Super easy and problem solved. The one downside is you will lose vvm and wifi calling, but I don't use those anyway. And you get rid of the Verizon bloat.

I am trying to find a guide for the unlocked verizon firmware. I just got my new phone today.
Would love your advice since I also have an unlimited plan and on my note 4 I used Fox-fi to get a hot spot

It is quite simple. Flash the Unlocked firmware on the phone using Odin/Prince Comsy's Odin, check the link below:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...m-n950u-u1-t3685884/post74087340#post74087340
Optional: Set up the Video Calling (VoLTE) by following the steps from that Youtube video:

Don't forget to give thanks to the guys from these threads who made those things possible.

@Proweedsmoker: thanks for your post. i relied on it when i ordered my unlocked note 8. i have an unlimited data plan from 2004. the phone arrived yesterday; it "only" took 2 weeks to arrive. i went to verizon to get a micro sim card (since the sim in my note 3 is the larger version). they activated it and first thing i did was turn on the hotspot to see if i could get wifi on my note 3. it worked perfectly. huge relief; no rooting, flashing or potential brick-making procedures. i'm loving this note 8 so far.

It's a great phone but I keep going back to the V20 because of my 3 main reasons: Hi-Fi sound, Interactive 2nd Screen and the ability of picking up a call by bringing the phone to your hear.
