Does foxfi work!!!? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

On the grandfathered unlimited data plan Verizon.

There have been several articles saying that Foxfi would not work on 7.0+ without root. I'm hoping (praying!) that there is a fix. 2 Phones arriving tomorrow, but without tethering they will have to get returned.

Can you not just use Android's built in hotspot? Or do they strip it out?

Verizon charges extra to use a hotspot on the grandfathered unlimited data plan. Verizon simply sucks.

There's no charge to use a hotspot on T-Mobile. I'm on the 6 GB plan with rollover, which as a heavy wifi user I have every month.
They will throttle you if you try to use your hotspot for big downloads.

using pdanet with foxfi, no issues.

Are you able to use the hot spot function?

For me the answer is sadly -No. Foxfi installed fine and does work in Bluetooth mode (Edit: USB mode working too). When I activate hotspot, it installs a certificate, attempts to turn the Hotspot on, then goes into a loop of certificate install, attempt to turn on, repeat. VZW UDP

Again using T Mobile, with PDANET with Foxfi paid version. I can use the hotspot as well as the USB fuctions without issue. Stock right out the box.

I was concerned about the Verizon model because doesn't TMobile native hotspot works regardless i.e. it's included in your plan were on Verizon it's not.

Thanks for the info. Since OP question was for phones on Verizon UDP, I wanted to make sure he got an answer that applied to him/her. Hopefully they find a way around this for those of us on Verizon, but that probably will have to wait for root.

I saw a workaround people got working on the Pixel. Would anyone with a Verizon V20 be willing to test this?
Would anyone like to try bypassing the verizon tether subscription check by option 1: installing network signal refresher, refresh signal and immediately turning on hotspot while refreshing. or option 2: turn on airplane mode then off and hit hotspot icon before it recaptures the signal.

It was in the quote on my post. I had a feeling I didn't make that obvious enough so apologies. Its this: "Would anyone like to try bypassing the verizon tether subscription check by option 1: installing network signal refresher, refresh signal and immediately turning on hotspot while refreshing. or option 2: turn on airplane mode then off and hit hotspot icon before it recaptures the signal."
Pixel owners have reported option 1 working for them. Hopefully it can work here too.

No luck so far. I've tried it both ways at least a dozen times each- trying to change up my timing and hoping I'd get lucky. If I could get this to work, I would be SO happy.

Do i need special app to get usb tethering? Im on tmobile

I emailed foxfi and asked if they were working on compatability with the v20. They replied that foxfi software will not work with this phone. Did not indicate that it would work in the future. Not good.

From what I have seen fox fi only works on Samsung phones now. When I had my Verizon unlimited data plan. After an update I want to say about a year ago no Verizon phone that wasnt Samsung didn't work. My Samsung phones I had up to the point they took away my unlimited data fox fi worked flawlessly. So doubt the v20 would work.

HTC1 and Media Link - Tethering Required!

I'm having a WTF moment.
Got my preorder One last Thursday and have been having trouble getting it to connect to the Media Link HD dongle.
First, it seems to connect and pass through image to the TV but I get a message saying something like "be sure the TV is properly configured". Then, I get other messages saying that WiFi Hotspot needs to be enabled and to go to the AT&T website, or dial 611.
After over a half hour with a service rep, I was told that the Media Link requires a WiFi hotspot, which in turn requires that Tethering be provisioned on the account... for another $20 per month for a 5gig plan. Suffice to say I told the supervisor I was eventually passed along to that the practice of incentivizing customers to preorder and stay with the company by offering a free dongle only to be trapped into spending more money every month to use it is a tactic worthy of Tony Soprano.
The part that confuses the hell out of me is that if the Media Link and phone both connect through my WiFi router, why would Tethering/Hotspot to connect to the AT&T data network even be necessary?
So, anyone else have this problem and a workaround?

Like? Not even sure where to begin. The phone connects to my router just fine, so that's not it. This is a real head-scratcher.
Have you tried changing out of game mode? If its not that they are forcing you to use hotspot to spend more on monthly charges ergo why it was free. Or one more possibility its just a mistake in the software and they will fix it in a future update. I'm glad I don't have att. I hope for the best you don't have to use your own data, just to use the media link

Not sure I don't have the phone yet. But that's what some other guy said he did to be able to see something on a TV. He did use a mhl cable though. So I don't know for sure if that will apply to you.

No, you definitely do not need tethering / hotspot on your account. I use the Media Link HD with my One (AT&T version) without any issues and I don't have tethering on my account.
Make sure the firmware on your MediaLink is up to date and both it and your One are correctly connected to your WiFi hotspot. Also, be aware that any complex security settings on your hotspot could give you trouble.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
The firmware version of my adapter is 5.19.103.1 with no unusual settings on my router, which is an older Liksys - the blue one with the dual antennas.
The dongle recognizes my network name and my One connects for a second until a dialog on the phone reports that hotspot is required and to go to the AT&T website or call 611.
I have never applied "unusual" settings in the router other than naming the network, broadcasting SSID and applying WEP.
Any help is appreciated.

I have tethering on my plan but I did notice that the flash wouldn't work while it was connected to my MediaLink. It gave an error message saying that flash isn't supported while hotspot is enabled.
would also like to know how to get around this hotspot error.. I've tried different security settings on my wireless router; what I haven't tried is using NO security to see if that helps. will try this now and update post!
edit: even no security on my wireless router doesn't change anything.. hrmm

Yeah, this is getting wierder by the moment.
Likewise I tried disabling security on the router with no results.
I just installed a tethering app which requires root (suggesting to me that it works around any block at&t put on the ROM), started the link and it disabled tethering in favor of WiFi.
Looks like one of us is going to be on the phone with AT&T and/or HTC this week. I already have about 45 minutes invested with an appointment for Wednesday to discuss the tethering issue. Where I'm concerned, how I use my monthly bandwidth allotment is my business and they have no right to dictate limits to what I pay for within the confines of my plan.

Have you tried putting the phone in airplane mode and then just turning on WiFi? I wonder if its just because the Media Link sees the hotspot on the device as an option, even though it isn't enabled or activated.

Have the same issue, and putting the phone in airplane enables me to connect it with my tv but only for about 20 seconds. After that, the phone will
tell me that there's something wrong with usb tethering setup thus kills the connection. So technically, connecting the media link with the phone
triggers tethering on the phone, either usb or mobile data which are somehow blocked by atnt.
With regards to gaming mode, it's a mode on my tv that draws in extra frames to smooth things out, only it had a hard time working mostly lag.
As for the media link I doubt I'll need one, as my tv is a D8000 so runs wireless anyway.

Pretty much for the moment. I tried flashing M7's ROM and it worked fine. Seems AT&T has blocked the WAP/Tethering function in either the kernel, radio, or the ROM. So, the solution would seem to be:
1) Find a ROM you can live with and flash it.
2) Find a Kernel (or radio, if that's what it is) that works with the stock AT&T ROM and flash it.
3) Wait for AT&T to get their heads out of their asses to realize that they're screwing their customers who have peripherals like the Media Link which connect via WAP and fix it in an OTA update.
Rumor has it that there's a 1.29 update out there somewhere. Let's see what happens. In the meantime, those of us who are in this boat should call AT&T's technical support and give them an earful for pushing disfunctional equipment on us. There's plenty of advertising hype from both AT&T and HTC about how cool the phone is, but nothing in the advertising literature that says how they crippled the phone.
I'm in the same boat here. There is another thread about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2242737
If I can't figure out a router configuration that fixes it, I may experiment with "rooting" and then trying to kill the com.htc.tetheringguard app. I'd definately rather have it work through my wireless router like it should, but not if I've got to leave the network open/unsecured!

I am rooted, froze that app (along with all the other AT&T bloatware) with Titanium and it still doesn't work - no link action, no tethering, either.
Frankly, I'm pissed. I understand why they inhibit tethering, especially for those of us who are on unlimited data plans. There are always guys that will abuse it. But this phone came that way from the factory, which means that even those who are on 2G plans are screwed. In either case, if I'm paying for data, it's up to me to decide how fast I want to use it, the same way as if I were to pay for a tank of gas in my car, it's not up to Exxon to tell me I can't drive on the highway.
I was supposed to have received a call back today from the AT&T supervisor to discuss options, but (surprise!) no call. Looks like I'll be having a word or two with them tomorrow - and I have half a mind to demand a full credit on the purchase price of the phone for the amount of time I've spent jerking around with them about this.

FOXFI fixed on latest OG5, none rooted Verizon Note4

Hi all,
After a long research and playing with different options, I finally found a way to make Foxfi work again on my Verizon Unlimitted data, none rooted, OG5 with latest update. I'm not gurantte that it will work for everyone because I only tested on my phone. So feel free to try out my method and if you blow up your device, it's your fault and your responsiblity. Once you able to bypass VZ lock down, you should able to connect normally WITHOUT have to go through all the steps. Enough said let try it out
1) Turn off your 4G, turn on your wifi.
2) Open foxfi and follow through until it failed by VZ message.."please call bahbahbah", hit cancel when you see the message
3)Switch to wifi and disconnect it from connecting to your router (open the connection then hit forget). Now your wifi is on but you shouldn't have internet
4)Close your Foxfi then reopen, then go through the process again, but at the end you will received a message that it unable to connect, hit cancel.
5) Now turn off your wifi and turn on your 4G, try to connect with foxfi and it should prompt you to enable hot spot in settings, launch settings and turn on hotspot. Bang, you should be sucess!!!
Once this is done, next time you just launch your foxfi the normal way, no need to go through these steps again.
Please provide feed back and good luck.
Well I heard that Foxfi is working again, don't know how/why?? but it's working, so no need to try anything. Thread closed.
How reliable is the paid version of FoxFi? I used it in the past on my S4 before I rooted it and it worked fine, but it was only the free version. Aside from the 500 meg-per-use limit, I had no problem. I tried it briefly a little earlier and it didn't work, but I might have missed a step. Almost forgot to mention, but after installing and running the app for the first time, a message appeared saying 'Network may be monitored'. Should I be worried about this? Thanks.

Thanks. One other question, is there a way to FoxFi without having to be stuck with the system lock screen? I like to use Zui as my lock screen, and having to use the system one I have to sign into my phone twice. Is there a setting in Security I can disable or something?
Download this app, run it and it should remove foxfi lock screen. http://pdanet.co/help/RemoveLock.apk
After that you can set your own lock screen

If you try to use the built-in mobile hotspot, it'll respond by telling you to either call Verizon or visit their site to enable that feature. With FoxFi, it allows you to use the mobile hotspot without having to pay extra for the convenience of it. You open the app, start it, then tap the button that redirects you to the mobile hotspot feature built into the phone. Basically, the app bypasses the need to enable the hotspot through your carrier. The full version is only $7.95 and you have about seven days, I think, to try it out. I'd recommend installing the 'Remove Lock' app mentioned in this thread should you choose to try FoxFi, since the app requires you to set either a password or pin lock due to it creating a VPN when first used. I've been using it for a while and it works as well as any rooted Android phone with the hotspot feature enabled. Hope this helps.

Simple answer, the build in hot-spot you have to pay for Verizon data service plan. With Foxfi you pay 7$ one time fee and use it forever...

No, not at all. Nothing on my bill indicate useage...
Per VZW...
Here's the breakdown:
If you have a new Verizon "Share Everything" plan, you can use your phone's built-in mobile hotspot feature or a third-party tethering app free of charge? but you're limited to the data in your Share Everything data pool. Overage rates for shared data plans are $15 per gigabyte.
If you have an old usage-based data plan, you can now use a third-party tethering app free of charge. You can also use your phone's mobile hotspot feature for an additional $20 per month (per device), which also gets you an additional 2GB of data.
If you have an old unlimited plan, you are technically required to pay $20 per month for tethering? whether you're using a third-party app or your phone's mobile hotspot feature. However, Verizon has no way of knowing if you're using a third-party app to tether.

For the most part, it works without issues.
What I have discovered. Devices cant talk across it (as far as I can tell), and sometime it bugs out (every once in awhile). Overall works great.
The annoying part is damn icons in the top of your phone you cant get rid of. 2 for foxfi, 1 for hotspot.

Use to? I'm referring to the new unlimited data plan that just came out. AT&T said you can't add hotspot to the plan. So I'm hoping there's a mod for regular hotspot.
I have the new unlimited AT&T data plan. I tried to setup a wifi hotspot so I could use my Nexus 9 wifi only tablet. A message popped up saying I needed to call 611 to add hotspot to my plan. I then setup and connected a Bluetooth hotspot. That worked fine. I've successfully used it several times.

Ok..thanks for the info.
You have to modify the build.prop. Breaks OTA updates....
XDA won't let me post links but Google: "Nexus 6P showing as AT&T on Straight Talk" and the first result from google product forms contains a guide.
If you are rooted add "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" to the bottom of /system/build.prop.

Both bluetooth and USB work, but WiFi requires a mobile hotspot plan (which I don't have, so I can't test).
If you are the only one on your plan, go prepaid, I dont pay extra and the stock tethering under settings works just fine

Does anyone know if the usb/ or hotspot of foxfi/pda net or other non native teathering apps work on the z force droid? ive been on unlocked and rooted phones for a while but i'm just not seeing anything that i want. i bought a oneplus 3 then found out it didn't have the lte bands for verizion. derp. but i think id go back to a locked phone for this modular deal as long as i could still teather with pda net. cuz i ant pay'n no 30 bucks for Verizon to "unlock" the capability of my phone. pffffffftttttttttt.
just curious if anyone knows or could check

I searched for the same, tried a number of apps, tried all of these recommended root apps & protocols ended up with the same disappointing result. Most of it just didn't work or no one could provide the necessary tools in proper sequential steps.
With you phone powered on remove your sim card. Go to Mobile hot spot & tethering, activate blue tooth tethering.wait a few minutes put your sim back in. you should now be able to pair devices with your phone and share its internet connection..

Found this in the other threads regarding hotspot. If you download "Network Signal Refresher Lite" from 8JAPPS in the playstore you can use native tethering. Just open the app and hit refresh and the moment you lose service drag down the quick tiles and tap the hotspot button. Been using this on my Moto Z Droid for the past few days and it works perfectly

Great tip. works like a charm. and i see why, its so simple. if ya wanted something similar without downloading the app id imagine pulling your sim or anything that pops the radio off for a few so it can't call home and ask for permission.

Use Network signal refresher
Does anyone know of any workarounds? Network Signal Refresher stopped working for me with Nougat as well.
Yesterday they had an update for Network Signal Lite to version 5.0. Didnt work for me.
Today they have another update to version 5.1 hoping it fixes the issue. Just figured I would share.
i take it popping the sim doesn't work as well then. seams as if they might have closed the "if not able to call home let hotspot on anyway" bug then.

Popping the sim card does indeed work just hit the hotspot icon in the quick settings right after you reinsert it. Been doing since the first day nougat came out and it works every time.

I've been doing this, and it does work, but I'm finding it turns itself off after a short time - are you seeing this as well?

Tethering on Verizon UDP

snowrider0985 said:
I am on a UDP and was able to get the built in wireless tethering working.
1. Eject the Sim Card tray ( Just a little bit)
2. Open up the settings menu (not the drop down shortcut)
3. Go to mobile hotspot and tethering
4. re-insert sim card tray
5. click to enable mobile hotspot
6. enjoy tethering

I can confirm this works on a Verizon Note 8, day 1 about 30 minutes fresh out of the box.
edit: This is on an old school UDP, as the new UDP's don't require any work-arounds.
This works for about 30 seconds then turns off mobile hotspot, any ideas ? I have a note8 for Verizon also.

have you tried the generic one? i know it works for me on sprint
but soft reset the phone or just reboot. as soon as its on, pull down the notification bar and hit hotspot quick.
if it turns on see if it stays on, if so then your good to go, but once you turn it off you'll have to reboot again to use.
Unlocked Note 8 grandfather UDP works fresh out the box with not sim eject bypass.
@ixcknyxi Do you have foxfi or any other hotspot apps installed on your phone?
Foxfi doesn't work for hotspot just BT and USC on note8. Unlocked versiom works like a charm I am sure.

I know foxfi wifihotspot doesn't work due to the firmware (7.0). I was just asking if you had it installed on your phone.
I have installed, Should I uninstall?

No, you can leave it installed.
Turn on (check) the activate bluetooth mode on foxfi then try the sim card bypass method, connect a wifi device while its on, then you can turn off the bluetooth mode on foxfi.
Let me know if that works. Im almost 100% sure it will stay on.
You can try with bluetooth or with USB mode on on foxfi.
Does anyone know if that method worked...debating whether or not to return the Verizon Note 8 to get the Unlocked one from Bestbuy.
I tried the Bluetooth option in FoxFi, nothing worked. The problem is the mobile hotspot doesn't stay on long enough to allow anything to connect. I haven't had luck with signal refresher Lite or Pro either. Any other ideas for the Verizon version of the Note 8?

-Try with it on and the phone plugged in with usb.
If that doesn't work,
Uninstall everything and clear cache. I had this issue with my s8+. The hotspot apps you installed are interrupting the hotspot and it shut it off in a few seconds. Remember, you must time it right

This method works 100%. I am with Verizon and I would recommend the unlocked version if you are a heavy hotspot user and if you DO NOT use wifi calling. Using the hotspot doesn't require the sim removal method, it can be a pain in the butt after a while.
I'm a tad baffled because my hotspot works just fine on my Verizon model. No SIM trick needed to activate it.

This worked leyvatron! Thank you so much! Clearing the cache did the trick, for good measure I uninstalled the other apps also.

All I did was rename my device and changed password. Worked just like it's suppose to. Wonder why others are having issues?

I've only seen this issue when the 4G LTE signal strength isn't great, I've tethered on my phone without issue using this method, no shutoff after 30 seconds. Not sure what's going on your end :-/

Hotspot/Tethering on old school UDP is not included unless you paid an extra $30/month for it, which is why this method (or root, or ADP, or an unlocked device) is required.
