I have been reading the unlocking / voice calling threads about the galaxy tab and they are really informative. However, with the thread growing so long and so many different carriers being discussed, I lose track of which version is doing what.
So, since I am buying one today, I would really like to know which carrier would be the best to unlock here in the US. Should I buy the AT&T or T-Mobile vesrion? Does unlocking or flashing one or the other provide better use or functionality than the other?
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
JT
^from what i have read on here the tmo version is not compatible at the moment with the unlocks;
hence the at&t version is best in usa; and the bell canada version in CDA..
enjoy!
i would go with att because it will be compatible with Euro 3G frequencies also you will be able to hack to get phone calls AND 3g. I believe Tmobile is only getting voice and edge at the moment...
Why are the Verizon and Sprint models left behind?

Because they are obviously more difficult to unlock and are probably less compatible with any other countries network. Almost every carrier worldwide uses GSM, sim cards. So version nor sprint wouldnt be a good choice since they don't use sim cards.

Yes you would! A TMo Tab still supports regular 2100MHz UMTS.

1. Both at&t and tmobiles tabs can be easily carrier (network) unlocked. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA and will not work in Europe. Also I am not sure that anybody knows how to switch these tabs from one carrier to another.
2. Another story about getting voice and 3G in the US. So far the best case for using tmobile phone sim presents at&t tab. Tmobile does not recognize this tab and their broadband device and allows for voice calling.
I could have voice and EDGE on tmobile using at&t tab with flashed EUR firmware and bell modem.
'I'm with Verizon's tab in SF, USA. Rooted with 4Zroot.
Using Droid X overclock application (market) on other extra features only.
GV & Skype (mod for 3G), can make calls & receives with both 3G (data plan $20-1Gb) & Wifi plane mode. I hope this helps.

Is it possible to root the Sprint version? Can you run custom roms?
Tethering with my Droid X is working too. I haven't done the recovery yet, waiting for stable version.

I am new to all this and just want to be 100% clear.
If I have a TMob Tab I have to use an ATT sim. If I have a ATT Tab I can use either ATT or Tmob sim.
If I use the ATT Tab with my current Iphone 3gs sim (unlimited everything) I will have full voice and 3g function?
If I use the Tmobile Tab with my ATT sim (unlimited everything) I will full voice and only 2g data?
Im sorry for asking such a simple question but I just want to be sure before I buy a Tab today.
Thank you all in advance.
Att and tmobile are using different frequencies thus 3G won't work if you are not using sim and tab from the same carrier. You can get only EDGE.
Att tab allows for voice and data when using t-mobile sim with voice and data plan.
I don't have knowledge of whether t-mobile allows the same with att sim.
T-mobile does not allow for voice and data when using their sim...

Thanks, that cleared it up for me.
I'd be happy with a TMob tab that had voice and Edge at this point. I'm almost always in WiFi anyway.
I picked up a Tmob tab today, if things dont look up soon I will return it and get the ATT.
Any info on when the S4 will get Wi-Fi calling? And will the Sparks model be included?
My phone gets only one bar in my house. :crying:

As far as I know they are still working on updates. And I think only triband phones will be able to do WiFi calling meaning no older gs4s will be able to do it.

Daniel,
I never thought about it that way. I just wondered why the S4 Mini and Galaxy Mega were singled out for the upgrade.
I have the Tri-Band SPHL 720T version, so I should be in line to get it.
Unfortunately, it's very hard for me to find info on tri-band or Wi-Fi calling.

Well galaxy s4 mini and mega are triband phones. You should contact sprint directly and talk to someone high up.

I used the app GrooVeIP and Google voice to be able to call, text and use voicemail over WiFi for free. You sign up on Google voice to use your mobile number and then follow the instructions at http://snrblabs.com/snrb/grooveIp.aspx . I used this in Europe where there was no CDMA Sprint service and I had WiFi in the hotels or local hot spots. It even works on on my Note 8 tablet but its a little weird holding the tablet up to my head to talk.
Does anyone know anything? I haven't seen any news on it and most of their other phones don't have this feature. My LGG2 digitizer went crap so I picked up the Moto E and that's a huge feature that it's missing.

The Moto E is a really low end phone though. I just tested it with my m8 and both voice and data are working simultaneously.
The m8 is HTC though. The old moto X and droid turbos didn't have it .unless I'm mistaken.
It works now on the turbo.
As far as the x goes volte (which allows voice and data together) is built into 5.1 which allows the nexus 6 to work this way on verizon. I'd assume the 2015 x would work the same way bit we don't n of yet.
Now that a few weeks have gone by, I'd like to bump this question.
NOT VoLTE... just voice and data simultaneous on 4G, like many older Verizon phones have done for years. (do I remember correctly that this is because of multiple radios, voice over CDMA while data is LTE?)
Thanks for any info any of you may have or know of.

Most new phones do not have two radios so I think the answer is likely no on Verizon.
I find that hard to believe my current phone is a note 3 on Verizon and it does simultaneous voice and data along with my old note 2 and I'm pretty sure my wife's galaxy s6 does also.

A little more digging... Thanks to XDA user Omen87 for this info confirming simultaneous voice and data for Verizon (hopefully it's accurate):

I think that will only be with VOLTE but we will see.

He's most likely talking about VoLTE which lets you talk and use LTE at the same time. Verizon phones for the past 1.5 years or so have not had the ability to use CDMA voice and data at the same time, to do both you need to be on LTE and have VoLTE enabled.

Not entirely true.
On the LG G3 before the VoLTE upgrade I could do both.
The limitation was you needed to be in an LTE area and CDMA would be used for voice and LTE for data.
If you were not in an LTE area, then not possible.

Was the Droid Turbo after the G3 or before? I can't even remember. I know the Droid Turbo was one of the first phones that required VoLTE to work in order to use voice and data, and everything since then has been the same.
Title kinda says it all. Got a Verizon s7 I'm using on Straight Talk with my att nanotechnology sim and everythiNguyen works fine except I can't seem to SEND mms, receive them just fine but sending seems to be an issue. 4G LTE works (in majority pkaces), H+ active when LTE not on, calls are seamless (excluding the prefix issue), and texts are fine. I've set up.my apn for the att network on straight talk so ik that's no issue. Anybody else with a s7 or even s6 that can help me maybe? Also before you ask why I didn't just buy through att version, I got this one for 350 off contract from someone I know..... couldn't beat that deal. Also, would've got a Verizon Sim for straight talk but that'll also require buying another CDMA access code and that procedure is tiring once you receive it.
How did you get lte? I am using a Verizon s7 edge with cricket, which is AT&T. All I get is h+ because it doesn't have band 17 or 12

Have you updated your Verizon s7 while on another network? Just curious cause I'm running G930v on AT&T and was thinking about updating if possible, thanks.
I have an offer for a Verizon S7 at a really good price, but long term I think I want to stay with AT&T for compatibility reasons. Does anyone know of any issues that might prevent me from using the Verizon S7 on ATT in a year or two if I don't do any ota updates?
I'm running just fine, decent 4G LTE and H+ for 2 months now. Don't have any foreseeable worries, but am curious about how updating will go if it's a must, but not to worried.
I ran a Verizon S7 fine on Cricket for about a week (phone wasn't for me). LTE was good and was cool to use the hotspot without having to root.

Hello, I just bought the s7 edge Verizon variant from Net10 and I've noticed that when I make a phone call I lose the Mobile Data. Now being that I'm not on a Verizon Account and I'm using a MVNO does anyone know a Mod or Prop edit that can be made to enable this functionality? I am coming from the Note 4 and I did not have this issue furthermore since I'm not on Verizon I can't officially activate the HD Features
It's a hardware limitation, the phones only have one radio and can't do CDMA and LTE at the same time.
Okay so the newer flagship devices are not capable of talking and Mobile Data at the same time? Yet legacy devices such as the Note 4 is? Furthermore of HD voice is enabled it works just fine... ?

The feature is done by verizon on their end and since your using a non verizon phone on their network your phone will not be provisioned properly on their network, so although voice and data will work as these are sim controlled HD features will not. You can call verizon and plead your case, but Im assuming you just used an already activated sim and placed it in the phone
This is an actually Verizon device but I am operating on one of their MVNO Carriers which is Net 10, thanks for the input

Yes they are, but it requires VoLTE.
