Help flash new rom on s4 i337 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so I rooted my s4 i337 with king root and I want to install a custom rom. Using twrp and loading into it makes me get a error message like at&t has detected unauthorized software. I have odin open can i flash it using odin on my pc? I want a new rom so my phone wont lag when i watch videos and listen to music.

You need Safe Trap recovery.
And never use King Root again.

If the i337 has a locked bootloader, the phone can only be flashed with custom ROMS that are based on a stock Samsung ROM and use Safestrap for installation.

not trusted, and install unnecessary junk apps that could be a malware, it's just not advised, if you had no choice and you're planning to keep root, then replace it with SuperSU..there are guides for that.

Just wanted to toss this one out there, use Kingo root, (When that is done and you try to update SU binary, it fails right from the get-go.) update SuperSU by chainfire in the Play Store, open SuperSU and update binaries. rooted and done.
BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I CAN'T GET TWRP TO INSTALL WITHOUT A SOFT-BRICK. I guess I'm going through terminal emulator -.-

[Q] Bootloader unlock Galaxy s4 sgh-i337 4.4.2 kitkat

I rooted my galaxy s4 sgh-i337 runing android 4.4.2 today using towel root. It is an apk you install and will root any phone with 4.4.2 or lower. Well I tried flashing clockworkmod but when it restarts a message from at&t comes up saying that unauthorize software is trying to install on phone. So I think that means the bootloader is locked. How do I unlock it so I can flash CWM and perform a nandroid backup. Then I want to install custom roms. I know alot of people were looking for 4.4.2 root for s4 so might want to post another thread about towel root. towelroot .com

You CANNOT install CWM or TWRP. You will need to use SafeStrap recovery. Read up about it, as I have the older Loki bypass and don't need/use towelroot or safestrap.
With safestrap you are limited to flashing Touchwiz based roms. You can flash modems. You CANNOT flash kernels.

This makes me truly sad. I was so looking forward to possibly flashing these ROMS and now...I have to get it my time machine and go backwards lol whenever I find the time to figure the downgrading thing out. Sounds to me like I'll be happier when I do find the time.

All the post below are correct except being able to go back to firmware with an unlocked boot loader.. Install safestrap 3.72 and install recovery. You will get a Twrp recovery .. dont try flashing custom kernels ..It might flash but none of the setting such as overclock etc. will work .nor will you be on that kernel version afterwrds .. I guess the simple answer is no for cwm and aosp roms .. You will be only able too flash custom stock roms
Wifi issues with towelrooted gs4
First off this may not be the right place for this (first time poster), and if so, either please help me in finding the right forum or forgive my ignorance.
I rooted my galaxy s4 today, and I have found that when I am trying to use wifi I am unable to connect to some pages. Using chrome I am unable to load google.com, or google anything directly from the search bar. And the app imgur also doesn't load whilst on wifi, but if I switch to my cell network they load just fine. If I had unlimited data of course this would not be an issue, but that is not the case and therefore I come to this forum and hope that someone can help me out!
My s4 is an at&t i337. I would amazingly, greatly appreciate any help!
Much thanks in advance!
lost recovery with unlocked bootloader
Hello,
longtime flasher here, not as familiar with gs4.
My girl has a sgh-i337 that has been bootloader unlocked since day one. Been on TWRP and slim rom the whole time too.
I was wiping Cache, Dalvik Cache, and System prior to doing a rom update and TWRP glitched out while updating partition after the final wipe operation. Screen went black. Boots to download mode only. Will not boot rom (as system was wiped) but shows the samsung custom unlocked logo. When in download (odin) mode, I see product name: sgh-1337, Current Binary: Samsung Official, System Status: Custom CSB_OEM_LSB: 0x30 Write Protection: enable
universal android toolkit will not show device connected so Installation of custom recovery through toolkit fails. ADB will not show device connected. ODIN will show device connected, though.
To recover with odin, can I flash the I337UCUAMDL from sammobile and retain unlocked bootloader?
Thanks for any and all help.
What is the bootloader version you need to unlock? I have 4.2.2 Red ATT S4, Baseband Version : I337UCUAMF3 / BUILD: JDQ39 , if i was able to unlock how would i go about doing so? I was hoping i could do something with Loki if not? How does Loki work exactly as well?
Congrats, you just voided your warranty. It will be 0x1 instead of 0x0.

Just FYI for you guys hijacking the thread. It is usually better for you if you start your own thread. Most people skim these threads and may lose track of who they were helping or give bad info to you thinking they were replying to the original question. Or, just skip the thread if they don't think the OP tiltle interests them.

I've used both CF Auto Root, Towelroot, and Motochopper guides and none of them have worked.
The only file I have on my computer is: philz_touch_6.08.9-jflteatt.tar.md5 as one of the files I used but that didn't work. I actually had already downloaded the files from the article you had linked but I didn't get around to it yet, I'm going to try that method out in about 15-30mins and see what happens.

Followed everything on that post and it worked! I'm rooted!
Though I'm not sure if you know about custom recoveries. I'm having issues with installing any of them and having it work. I am currently trying Safestrap and for some reason it won't install the recovery. It'll go through the process, but the state of the recovery won't change or anything.
I ultimately want to install CM11, but I'm really struggling to find a way that works!

[Q] Proper Rooting and SafeStrap Process NC4

Okay so I've been browsing through the forums and been reading up on this phone (even contacted Samsung about info on unlocking the bootloader, no go on that. Had to try though)
Basically I want to know what's the proper procedure for installing custom roms on an NC4 device 4.4.2
Things I know:
Bootloader is unlockable at the moment (hoping for some good news in the future)
Towelroot for rooting
Safestrap for recovery
(Both just download and install the apk)
Things I don't know:
Kernel?
Somebody said I had to flash the NC2 kernel via Odin?
Knox?
What is this? What trips it?
I did see the list of guides and I did read and watch all the necessary ones, but the date on those are from 2 years ago and I just need confirmation on if I'm going about this right.
Any help is appreciated. I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge, this is my first Samsung device.
Also, what would happen if somebody were to flash the DE stock files via Odin to a Retail N3?
If you upgraded to NC4 or NK1, you're stuck until Samsung unlocks the bootloader or Verizon stops lying to their customers. There is no root available after upgrade at this moment in time.

That sucks. You can't do anything about it at the moment. I was forced to upgrade and lost root. Custom ROMs won't be available to you or me until someone finds a hole to unlock the bootloader. Welcome to our Verizon Note 3 rooting dilemma.

You do not have a dev version so cm 11 or 12 is a far off dream you won't get. Your bootloader is locked there is no unlock.
You are in luck nc4 is root able using towel root then safe strap and the unified firmware. You will need odin and a pc for flashing a few things the NK1 modem towel root and the unified firmware. Pick a rom from the development thread i suggest jasmine 1.x or eclipse.

My opinion: If you're doing a custom kernel, make sure it works with whatever ROM you're flashing. I suggest sticking with the stock kernel* until you get the hang of things OR do a little research and learn a bit before you attempt anything. There's a lot of forums with details and help here. I've installed kernels before and after installing ROMs with little or zero problems, but I'm more of a dabbler than a professional.
I would suggest backing up your current setup in case you need to reflash. That's a definite.

It really depends on the ROM, there is no set guide for all ROMs.
Did you install busybox? I like using busybox on rails. Just download the app and click install.
Download the safestrap apk (3.75 B04) and install that, open it and install recovery.
I'm currently running Clean ROM. I am on NC4. I downloaded the rom, and moved it to my SD card. I rebooted to safestrap, wiped data, cache and dalvik then installed the ROM to the stock slot. Then, following the instructions for Clean ROM, I rebooted to download mode from recovery and flashed the NC2 Kernel with odin.
The main thing is to read the installation instructions for the particular ROM you want to flash.
Don't forget to use Titanium backup to freeze SDM app (I think that's what its called) so your phone will stop trying to update.

Thanks man, I was supposed to update this thread saying that I got through with the proper procedure for installing Jasmine Rom
Although I was running Eclipse before, and I wanted to try going back to stock but it just got stuck on the Verizon splash screen
I'm thinking it's because I had the NC2 kernel active when I should have gone back to the NC4 kernel
I looked for a NC4 kernel to flash but I only saw the modems and tar files, so not knowing if those were the same as kernels I decided to just try Jasmine. So far, I like it.
I have crazy battery drain though. I think it's because I'm running it in Slot 1

I'd be happy to answer your questions
If you have an NC4 device that's running 4.4.2, you are able to gain root access and install safestrap recovery on your device. However, if the android version is 4.4.4, you cannot root or install safestrap.
NC4 is just our last build number, but there are two versions I think, the 4.4.2 and the 4.4.4. In the 4.4.4, they blacklisted every single compatible kernel that could work on the device. They forgot to do it in the 4.4.2 version, that's why we're able to gain root.
On our NC4 4.4.2 Verizon Note 3, we can root, install safestrap recovery and install a very limited amount of roms from the non developer edition selection on the XDA forums.
Rooting via towelroot, to my knowledge, does not trip knox. However, installing safestrap recovery does. But if you're worried about your warranty being voided, I wouldn't panic too much because with our bootloader being locked, it is very easy to flash the original Stock Verizon files through Odin to go straight back to factory settings so it looks like if you just pulled it out the box. The knox code would be reset and you would have a device that looked like if it has never been rooted or modified.

It will say custom, but that isn't tripping knox. Custom can be removed with the triangle away app. Custom just gets flagged like you were saying by changing the recovery , but it doesn't trip the knox counter.

More info is needed in order for XDA community to help. Which phone variant do you have i9500 or SGH i337? What firmware are you on? What root process did you use, also what rom did you try to flash?

Ah yes, here:
i) SGH i337m
ii) 4.4.2
iii) CF-AUTO-ROOT (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293800)
iv) Aaaaaaaaaaaaand... multiple Lollipop roms found here and one for the i9505 which rendered the same result (that is - no result, other than having to go through the first time boot setup from Samsung, which happens with all of them)
I had some difficulty finding where the legitimate i337 XDA was, but I think I found the right place (here)
Thanks already, regardless of if we figure it out
Ouch
Bump
Do I have to simply flash a custom recovery?

It sounds like you'll have to use odin and flash the stock firmware and then start the process over again. You should be able to find the firmware at sammobile.com.
Then root using cf
Flash twrp recovery, after root get flashify from the play store and flash the twrp image file in it, http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/jfltecan
Then you can flash roms.

Me too.
I rooted My S4 last year using towel root. Then ,AT&T updated my phone to Baseband NI1,and I lost root. Since then ,every time an AT&T software update message comes in ,I try to let it update ,and it always fails. As of now I am still on 4.4.2 NI1 and no root. Is there any way to re gain root access?

You'll need to flash the nc1 module in Odin, then root with towelroot. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53758227

You don't need root to flash a custom ROM.
You just need a custom recovery. TWRP is recommended.

You don't need root. TWRP can be flashed with Odin and this doesn't require root.
Rooting and flashing a custom ROM are different and separate things.
