You don't need root to flash a custom ROM.
You just need a custom recovery. TWRP is recommended.

You don't need root. TWRP can be flashed with Odin and this doesn't require root.
Rooting and flashing a custom ROM are different and separate things.

Just flash. All custom ROMs have root.
Btw, you need a custom recovery to flash a ROM (like TWRP, CWM)

Not necessarily. You can flash a custom recovery through Odin and not root it at all and then just install a already rooted ROM.

CWM is always reliable. Some prefer TWRP. I'm using Philz Touch. It depends on your preferences. CWM is the most stable.

You should be able to root it yourself. Flash a custom recovery in Odin and use the recovery to install Superuser. Your phone will be stock and rooted. This will give you the ability ot use XPosed modules to customize it in just abotu any way you can think up. All without having to wait for devs to do anything.

//EDIT: Sorry.. I was too fast. GoldenEye just made a release of that version. To the mods: Delete or close, please. Really sorry.
The title is basically my question, but to elaborate: Do I need to do an initial process before flashing a custom ROM or does flashing a custom ROM form part of rooting?
you need root to flash a custom rom.
you can say root is only a doorway to customization.

Incorrect. You don't need root to flash a custom rom.
You need a custom recovery to flash rom. You don't need root for that.

Yes it is, but you will lose your warranty anyway, it's not important if you got root or not
Hello all. I just purchased a Note 3 that was originally an AT&T Note 3, but has been unlocked. So I am going to be using it for T-Mobile.
I'm going to be rooting it, so do I use T-Mobile ROMs after its rooted? And is there a certain method I need to use to root? Or is that universal? I've rooted phones in the past, but never an unlocked device, so I dont know what's different, if anything at all. Thanks for any help you can give.
You have to flash the ROM you want, and root after that.
If you root before installing ROM, the rooting will be override.

Yes. The correct sequence should be: install custom recovery, install rom, root.
Some rom comes with pre-rooting so you may not need to root.
Because rooting is in the system partition. And when you install a rom, it will be install to the system partition too. So if you have root, new rom will override your rooting.

Thank you, didnt know all that.
But since it is an unlocked AT&T device that will be running on T-Mobile, do I install AT&T or T-Mobile ROMs? Sorry if this sounds dumb, I've just never dealt with an unlocked device before.

To flash a Custom ROM there is no need to root, the only thing you need is to install a custom recovery, TWRP is very good. After you have installed TWRP or any other custom recovery, you have to put on your SD Card the ROM that you want to install, and install it from the custom recovery.

In my S5 I install TWRP fist then patch the Root file, I don't know if backing up works when your phone is non rooted.
