Need help, I suspect my android version is faked.

Hello, not exactly new to Android or Linux for that matter, but this has got me stumped.
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 from China because the seller conned me into thinking it was a g900v. It turns out its a Sm-G9006v. Android says it is 4.4.2 but other programs (Sysinfo, looking up the IMEI) tell me it is 4.2.2. So which do I believe? How do find out once and for all?
There are other little weird things about this phone and I'll explain if you'd like.

The additional information about anomalies would help. As you discerned, the system information screen looks legitimate, but SysInfo reports a fake i.e. MT6572/4.2.2. Which is correct?
One way to tell conclusively would be to run an extended benchmark suite. There would be a substantial difference in benchmark scores between a fake with a MT class processor and a legitimate G9006V (China Unicom S5). Alternately, you could look closely at the system files to discern if you actually have 4.2.2 or 4.4.2. Or multiple irreconcilable anomalies would.be compelling evidence of a fake.

Looking at the status bar icons it is pretty apparent this is not an original S5. Or maybe the seller rooted his device and changed the icons.
Also, it shows up as a Mediatek based device (mt6572). IT IS FAKE.

Since you're certain, can you provide a screenshot of a known legitimate China Unicom S5 for comparison?
If you've never seen a China unicom S5, then it's premature to declare it a fake before we really know. A different icon could easily be something that the carrier or a localized update effected.

It's running a Mediatek chipset. It is 100% fake. No variant of the S5 uses a Mediatek chipset. Kernel version is also incorrect and Android version shows JDQ39 which is Jellybean. No version of the S5 runs on Jellybean.

You're assuming that sysinfo is correct. And it is far from 100% reliable. I already stipulated earlier that it will be a fake if sysinfo turns out to be correct. The information page for the G9006V that you found after the fact is inconclusive with mostly oblique screen views.
The bottom line is that we don't know one way or the other for certain yet. You can cherry pick the evidence suggesting it's a fake if you wish. But there is no reasonable basis to say that the matter has been conclusively proven yet. The OP needs to benchmark the processor or another metric that will clearly distinguish between the two.

If you want to make it sure, try connecting it to a pc with kies3.

It's a fake, looking at the photo's, the phone is a dual sim phone, in china only the sm9008W and sm9009 are dual sim.

Now here's the kicker, it has the heartbeat sensor, it has the fingerprint sensor. Do you think maybe the person I bought it from just flashed it with a wrong ROM?

Despite a lot of dogmatic opinions in the thread, you still don't have enough information to know yet. You probably have a fake, but that isn't certain simply because a third party app says that you have Jelly Bean firmware and a MT processor. It's a fake if that information is correct, but it wouldn't be the first time that an app has reported erroneous information either.
Likewise, missing the heartrate or fingerprint sensors would be strong evidence of a fake. But the best quality clones do have working heartrate & fingerprint apps. The most damming evidence IMO is the kernel version which is suggestive of a clone. But I stand by my earlier advice. Had you run a benchmark suite, you'd already have a conclusive answer.

Root possible?

I know its too early but what do you guys this about rooting/custom roms for venice?
BB ceo said (something along the lines) that they will only make an android device if it is secured enough. WOuld that mean a locked bootloader etc? Do you have a source on the Priv blocking sideloaded apps? That would be very unfortunate. Locked bootloader is a given but I would still like to be able to install my favorite apks.

I can't see things like developer options/USB debugging etc being outright blocked. That just seems like a great way to alienate the majority of the userbase that a device like this is targeted towards.

This is my main concern... I want this phone, badly. But after having a G4, having to wait for root and still not having any decent roms I won't get the Priv if it doesn't at least get root. It's stock-ish android so I can deal with lack of roms but no root, no sale.

No idea why anyone here thinks they would do that. Even on BB10 devices installing apks is allowed - and they sure wouldn´t do otherwise on an Android device - that would be crazy.

Bootloader WILL be locked, that's a no brainer. But locking out sideloading, developer options is not possible without TOTALLY killing interest and sales. Blackberry desperately needs Priv to succeed. This is their last chance to avoid becoming the next Nokia. So no, we will have at least sideloading available. Honestly, it doesn't matter if they lock out all these essential features, if they release at least the kernel source and device tree day-and-date with the phone. If you have these, we're better off building a CM 12 (or 13:fingers-crossed ROM for the Priv.

Look at the recent crop of AT&T and Verizon Samsung phones. Their bootloader are locked up tighter then...... Well we will just say their locked down [emoji1]

I wouldn't count on too much. The developer options could have easily been changed and some removed. As BB main selling point is security I expect this device to be one of the harder ones to crack.
As for the bootloader questions. Yes there have been a few that were uncrackable, a dirty hack to by pass has worked on some.

I imagine root is just a matter of time. Unless they lock the system partition, which other manufacturers have done in the past (Looking at you HTC). Even so, it has been done and s-on/off has been cracked before. Alternatives to locking include e-fuses, like in legacy motorola devices.
Bootloaders on the other hand, we're probably going to have to get some concrete evidence. It is most likely locked in my personal opinion.
This is all just speculation. Hopefully Blackberry can find a good balance.

The efuze us still used in many devices and if I know blackberry they will have it check against its servers for security. Once it detects root it will most likely disable the device. Or most of the functions that use BB servers. Remember everything is routed through Blackberrys servers in Canada so if their servers go do so does the device.

I would be completely fine with them locking out the BB services when root is discovered. But locking down the hardware would be overstepping their bounds. It's our hardware, not theirs. I know that doesn't mean they couldn't still do it, I just think it would be a jerk move.
It would be like if Microsoft bricked xbox machines that have been modded. They don't, they just ban you from XBox Live if they detect it. I think it should be the same approach.

I'm going to apologize in advance and hope there is someone who is patient enough to try and deal with me because I'm a complete idiot when it comes to anything electronic. So, I'm sorry. But any help is appreciated.
I recently downloaded SnoopStitch but when I opened it, I get a error message : Fatal Condition device not Compatiable. Device does not exist / no Qualcomm chip / no ROM
So, I know it exists. I thought it was on the device list when I went back and looked but I don't know for sure because it seems as if there is actually 700 different S4's and I have no idea which mine is, I guess. I think.
And I think ROM has something to do with memory but I don't really know and I have no idea how that would help.
So far as I know it is just a normal Samsung Galaxy S4 bought last September through Bell Mobility in Canada.
Is there anyway I can make it compatiable? Can I get this Qualcomm thing?

Qualcomm is the hardware manufacturer. More specifically, the processor and graphics processing unit.
The S4 came in two variants, a Qualcomm variant and an Exynos (Samsung's own processor) variant. You have the Qualcomm variant.
The Bell Canada version of the S4 is an SGH-1337M.
If your device does not appear on the compatibility list, there are certain ways to make the app think it's a different device. But let's get into that once we are certain it isn't.

SnoopSnitch requires root and stock rom (Stock rom meaning the factory pre-installed software).
Since you claim to be disinclined towards technology, I assume you have the latter, but not the former. Am I correct?

Yeah officially they won't release anything for a phone. But at the end of the day it's the same chip, so it uses the same instructions!
Here are a lot of people writing their own kernels, I would guess that's not impossible for them....

Seems like a simple enough question but I've been having a really difficult time trying to gain traction about information on this tablet or any tablet.

Yes. i've owned one since is was released last year but there is NOTHING on xda. Even though it's new and fairly speedy, no one has worked on an ROM for this. I wanted to unlock and root it so I can use it on another ISP/Mobile.

It's very very frustrating, there seems to be very little support for it. Do you know if you can charge while having a thumb drive hooked up? Like OTG style? I have purchased 2 tablets so far and neither have this capabilities. I don't want to be purchasing a third with the same result

I just ordered o e and it showed up today and it also does not charge while a thumb drive is hooked up. Have you found any information or help on this product anywhere. Do you know of any other forums where people actually answer problems? I am so impossibly frustrated

No need to root to switch to another isp. get unlock code from current isp, install odin 3.14.1 and install any isp firmware you want from https://galaxyfirmware.com/model/SM-T307U/ I had an at&t branded with android9, and now i am running wind/freedom android11 firmware.

Hi, thnx for the useful info. Did you have trouble getting the unlock code from at&t? Where did you enter that code? A specific app on the at&t rom I'm guessing?
Getting a sprint version of this device, but want to use it t-mobile. Have read that just factory reset device and use odin to flash other firmware would work, does that sound feasible to you? I'm kind of doubting that but have no idea really.
It used to be flashing diff rom would sim unlock, but not anymore I don't think.

Like I said, vendor unlock, install odin on your pc, use odin to install the desired firmware you downloaded.
The firmware should boot up, but maybe the radio bands are different between the two isp's? and therefore the LTE part of the tablet may not work. i don't care since I don't install a sim card, just use it on wifi.

I got unlocked ATT SM-T307UZNAATT from eBay.
My provider is Red Pocket, and I have ATT-compatible SIM.
When I try to place a call - ATT window appears and askes to log in to ATT account or create one.
How could I place calls?

How is the speed/lag? This tablet is mega slow, but I was wondering if I loaded different firmware (currently on AT&T) that it might help, since it can't be rooted.
My 8-yr old rooted Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is better than this thing, but alas a few apps won't run on 32-bit architecture. I think I will relegate this AT&T "brick" to my exercise bike for an entertainment interface.

Meh - no better. It is pretty ridiculous - I was very happy with my 2015 Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 - but it started crashing all the time. This one is slower, thicker, lower resolution, and heavier! 32 GB really isn't enough storage either.
It is super annoying there are not any good 8 inch Android tablets. The Huawei M6 8.4 looks okay, but being in the US it is a bit of a pain to get.

The only great 8" tablet is the Lenovo Legion Y700, running SD870 with 12gb ram. 2560x1600, but IPS and not OLED.
I own the Tab S 8.4 (2014), the Tab A 8.4 (2020) and the Y700 (2021, 8.8").
Tab A is terrible.
It's painfully slow.
It needs root.
It has the same RAM as a tablet 6 YEARS older than it, with LOWER resolution and ! much worse performance. I wish it could be fixed.... Android 10 Lineage is out for Tab S 8.4.

I have done quite a few mods/tweaks to system/Global/Secure settings and also disabled Gaming Optimization Service (GOS) via Alliance Sheild X, it has made a MASSIVE difference. This device's (SM-T307U) performance is being HEAVILY limited by software-based restrictions. Most of which can be disabled without root. I can go into more detail as to how ive sped up this device if anyone is interested.
NOTE - If someone has the ATT version and can drop the .IMG or Firmware .zip that'd be awesome.
Ill keep trying to find a way to root this device until i get a new one, if anyone else has any success, DM me.

I've already deleted, turned-off and disabled everything I can. It's a good bit snappier, but still a dog.
I actually have 2, so I may play around with deleting/disabling apps via ADB. But it's not battery drain, which with some securetask special permissions I've gotten it to SIP power while the screen is off (varies, as low as 2% per day up to about 6-7%).

I actually have 2, so I may play around with deleting/disabling apps via ADB. But it's not battery drain, which with some securetask special permissions I've gotten it to SIP power while the screen is off (varies, as low as 2% per day up to about 6-7%).

Yeah this this is good on power, it is just severely limited. Judging from similar devices with the same exynos processor, there's got to be something holding it back. I again recommend using SetEdit or something similar to modify some params in the settings tables. The line I highlighted is in both this tablet and my Galaxy S22 & S21. I also found a param in there called "Enhanced CPU responsiveness" which was set to off, after turning that on, I noticed a massive gain in my tablet.
Also worth noting is I added the line "Allow_more_heat_value" with a value of "30" and it allows all cores to boot to max.

I'll have to give this a shot. I wouldn't think AT&T throttled the CPU, which means Sammie did it for some reason. Probably to hit some sort of battery life benchmark. Or maybe it caused instability in some devices. But being a mid-tier processor you wouldn't expect that it needed to be throttled.
I believe Sammie is giving up on the Exynos processors. I bet they had issues on this tablet, said "screw it" and just **** this out with a throttled cpu.

It's 100% a Samsung related throttle. From my understanding, it's done because they use many of the same parts/processors in various devices, so as a way to control device specific performances, they set limitations. For example, this tablet has the same processor as some of their other "Higher-end" models (if I'm not mistaken), so to keep this tablet from outperforming the others, it's limited. I'm sure there are other reasons, like the battery benchmark bit that you mentioned too.
But yeah. This is 100% a Samsung based throttling.

Can you please share the mods/tweaks you've done?

I have one of these purely for its size, I travel over Europe and as the seating space is limited the smaller the better. I am running the Canadian Wind software but if anyone can give me a run through on disabling apps/services to speed up a bit that would be helpful.
I am going to buy the Lenovo Legion Y700 but only when a global version with LTE is available.
