IR blaster?? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Has anyone seen any news on whether IR is back on S8? Ive seen nothing on it so im guessing its not been returned. Can anyone confirm either way?

Nope, no IR blaster.

If they can include it on a small 4.3 inch device like the S4 mini then surely they can get one in the S8. Heres hoping they finally get one in the S9

They removed it from S6 onwards due to lack of use, I wouldn't hold your breath unfortunately.

Samsung collect usage stats for their phones, likely it's due to the fact they saw out of all the phones sold it was used very little and costing them money.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...nse-samsung-regarding-ir-blaster-removal.html
A response from samsung regarding it.
I would like to point out I was wrong, my S6 Edge has an IR blaster, its S7 and Note 5 that did not have it, and S8 /S8+

Seriously? Do we need two threads lamenting the demise of a feature that's controlling an also dying communication protocol? And no, the S8 doesn't have an IR blaster just like the Galaxy S6, Note5, S7, and Note7 didn't before it. Want an IR blaster? Buy another brand's phone. Einstein's definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome.

Apologies for a new thread but i used the search plus in the XDA app and it returned no results. I was asking a question rather than lamenting its disappearance. And as a Samsung phone user since the original Galaxy, i dont want another brand. I would just hope the extra phone size would allow its reintroduction as its clearly more used than Samsung thought. I still have my S4 Mini just to use as a TV remote (replaces 4 other remotes) and if the S8 had IR I could have gotten rid of that too. Anyway, since my question is answered and clearly people moan over this topic, can someone lock the thread from replies please?

Thread closed as it is essentially a duplicate.

Just sold my S6. Here's why.....

I owned the phone for just over 2 weeks.
First of all, I like android because it's not IOS. I don't like Apple. The whole Apple company annoys me.
I used to get annoyed when I heard Apple where suing Samsung for copying there patents, so on and so forth.
I couldn't help but notice straight away how much the S6 looked like IPhone 6, especially at the bottom of the phone (speaker grille).
Then I started looking at what Samsung have done, they took away what made them stand out.
They took away removable battery, and give us a very average size battery, but push wireless charges.
Worst of all they took away micro SD card!!!! Wtf
Then Samsung ask for a ridiculous price for different versions 32gb.....64gb.....128gb....... That's what apple does.
I used to be able to pick up 64gb micro SD card on sale for about $30. That option has gone.
The battery life on the S6 is poor. Let's be honest, everything I read tells me to turn off all sorts of features to make the battery last longer. It's a smart phone. I might as well buy a Motorola RAZR flip phone.
I'm just so disappointed Samsung have taken a huge step backwards and become who they used to fight. (IOS).
The fast Charging feature is cool, only if you want to carry your wall adapter and cable round with you all day, just incase!!!! The branded Samsung wireless charger should have come with the phone, not a $59.99 extra fee.
The only thing I will miss is the camera. It was excellent. But that's it.
Touchwiz was still sluggish, I experienced redraws more than I should have, and I still found it bloated with battery hogging apps.
I'm sick of Samsung. This is just my opinion remember.

You just perfectly outlined all the exact reasons I almost didn't get the S6 to begin with. Every year I can't wait to see the next Galaxy S, and this year Samsung made an iPhone running Android. Even though I hate Apple, my iPad is a huge part of my work and personal use, so I decided that the S6 had failed enough that it was time to just switch to iPhone 6+ and join the sheep.
BUT... I didn't. And the only reason I didn't was because it was time for me to upgrade now and I didn't want to get the iPhone 6 with the new one coming in Sept., leaving me with an old phone for two years. (I don't know where you are, but remember that in the US most of us are on 2 year phone plans.) So I just got the S6.
And I'm loving it. And I know I'd love the iPhone less. But I hate supporting Samsung making bad decisions.
Sorry but this is such a useless thread. Everyone of your reasons were very well know before launch. Yet you bought it anyway. Non of that was at all a suprise. Sorry your unsatisfied but you knew what you were buying.
We just need freaking root. God, I can't stand seeing all these useless apps running in my phone.
I hate at&t.
In my opinion they finally did something right for the first time in the last two years. People were always complaining about the build quality of Samsung phones. They finally build IMO a very nice phone, yes they did copy the looks of the iPhone a bit, but it looks great. One thing that did always bug me was the speaker being on the back of the phone. Now its on the bottom producing better sound when watching videos or listening to music.

None of the people I know that bought Galaxies had a problem with the build - it's always just been the iTurds that say how "bad" and "cheap" Samsungs are compared to their precious. I never had a problem or concern with the plastic body.
As for the new speaker placement, it's horrible. I'm constantly accidentally covering it just from natural hand placement when watching videos horizontally.

Countless reviews on YouTube where saying how debloated it is, how it's the best touch wiz ever!! Maybe the obligated to say that??!
However it still felt like touch wiz to me, lag, redraws.....
In Canada 32gb model costs $750. The 64gb model costs $860!!! That's what annoys me, I can buy a 32gb micro SD card for a third of that 110$ jump.
Samsung have copied everything Apple has done, and it's pathetic.

Look..I don't doubt your reasons for being unhappy but like I said..it's been covered! That horse is dead and beaten. No reason to stick a shotgun to its head.
My PERSONAL experience is this is the best phone I've used hands down. I had a droid turbo, spent a week with the m9 and have had plenty of time with my wife's iphone 6. The s6 wins hands down.. for my needs.
From your complaints maybe the g4 will be a better fit for you

Right...because apple has 2k screens, ir blasters, a payment system with MST support, multiwindow, etc. Please, Samsung is way out in front and Apple is trying to play catchup. Wish a mod would come and rid of this useless thread.

Hardware wise yes it's way out in front but software wise Android as a whole still hasn't caught up to iOS whether you like it or not. Not everyone needs widgets and endless customization's on their phone, some of us simply want a phone that works out of the box without needing to root or having to wait months for an update to address the memory leak issues.

Samsung has took a serious step away from its loyal customers by asking for more money for there devices and removing everything that made them special. You basically have an iPhone 6 running a bloated and ugly version of Android.
Once again my opinion, if you don't like it move on. Don't feel the need to be a keyboard tough guy and start calling names.
Childish.
I dont understand why they picked up S6 and then create a thread of their dislikes.
S6 features, pro and cons has been layed out prior opening sales and yet they still picked it up.

Move along folks, nothing to see here.

if you are on xda..you shouldn't get this phone

Hi,
I've owned every Samsung flagship and a few nexus's since the Samsung galaxy S2 days(currently own a note 4), And I've always enjoyed XDA (and Android obviously) as I could root and change ROMS and do what ever I wanted with the phone.
However, I learned my lesson when I got the Exynos varient S4 a couple of years ago. As many of you know, Exynos really lacks development with AOSP based ROMS. With my S4 while the Snapdragon varient had a working and stable CM ROM after a month, on the Exynos forums we waited for maybe a year until we got a sami-working CM, and even the last I checked, just to see if progress was made, I saw that those Exynos related bugs are still there(random audio problems, etc). Because I was smarter when I went for the Note 4 I made sure to get the Snapdragon varient and sure enough I'm enjoying CM since basically the phone came out while those with the Exynos note4 had to literally make a forum wide donation, recruit a random dev from xda, fund and buy him a device and since then I think only lately the've started getting some AOSP love(after months and months of dev, and still there are annoying bugs).
I have no idea if it's because Samsung won't share their Exynos sources or just because it's more difficult to develop with this SoC. However- If you are on XDA I can imagine you like having fun with ROMS. Maybe not everyone, but most of us like this site for a reason.
The fact is that I hated my S4 days as I could only choose TouchWiz ROMS(and they aren't that much different). This time, even if I'm not on CM, I can always flash TouchWiz: I have the option, and it's so very much different and not frustrating to be bound to only touchwiz.
The choice is yours, and if there was a snapdragon varient i'd tell you to pick it(..I still like samsung phones) but as it's only exynos..well, just like my S4, the note4, the S6 and basically every other Exynos device- you'd suffer from development.
good luck!
Edit: btw I was only talking about AOSP based development. For those of you that care about samsung updates more - you should know that samsung are treating their Note series very badly when it's related to updates. I didn't own a note2, or a note 3. But I have the note4 and I can promise you I've never owned a device that got treated as badly as this one. Maybe it's only the note4, no idea. But Lollipop update took months upon months to release and it was with many bugs. So far, we didn't get 5.1 as well, even though other Galaxy devices got it awhile ago. It seems like Samsung don't really like the Note series..
for more info just so you won't think I'm bashing for nothing: http://www.sammobile.com/2015/08/05/why-do-you-hate-the-galaxy-note-4-so-much-samsung/
**If you want Samsung to bring faster updates, and be more developer friendly, instead of buying the next phone and praise it- don't buy it and maybe they'll get the msg. personally I'm gonna go a non Samsung flagship next time and see if their attitude changes by the next note**

seriously though, 50+ people complaining about it not being a note4 and 5 people actually talking about their new phones.
IDK about you guys, but I have a note5 and would like to discuss the note5.
you know I am too over the whining, crying and fit throwing about the Note 5. All this *****ing isn't changing a damn thing and Samsung isn't going to change something that people are whining about anytime soon. I am all for discussing the Note 5 and leave the comparisons to the Note 4 behind us. Whew I feel better now .
This is the same crap that went on with the Nexus 6. Smartphones are moving in this direction whether we like it or not. Removable storage and batteries are becoming a thing of the past. If that's what you want hang on to your old Note. Let's move on people and concentrate on the facts when the device gets in the hand of users. Which by the way, is starting to look stellar and will probably sell well.

Actually in not trying to be patronizing I realize that this is about the note5 and specifically about its processor. Yes he references other phones but that was to show similarities between the exynos soc and the snapdragon soc. In a much shorter post he said.
"If you like flashing roms and you like AOSP then you may be disappointed by Samsung choice of processor. It makes development a pain in the @$$. "Be Aware".
Instead of complaining about complaints, read, understand, and move on if you don't like it. The problem is that you're on xda. This IS the place to discuss possible development OR THE LACK THEREOF. Not that many people have the phone yet. And to be honest the real developers probably aren't going to waste money on the note 5 because of what the OP stated.

Yes but this has been true for all Exynos SoC devices for years, it shouldnt come as a shock to anyone who has been even slightly aware of XDA and samsung for the past 3+ years. It is brought up literally every time samsung launches a device with Exynos, literally every time, which seeing as every samsung release in the past year has had Exynos, this should be common knowledge at this point.
Just because something is true does not remove disdain. Murders happen every 5 minutes. This is true. But is it something that people like? I mean I don't have a note 5. Nor do I care to bash it. But I do find it funny that people who are logged into and are users of a site that can sometimes be referred to as power user central are mad because power users are complaining about something lost that they held dear to them.
I really don't think people are mad that they are complaining as much as it is the volume of which they are complaining that is wearing on people. I get it with every iteration comes change, and with every change comes complaints about the change but there comes a time when you just have to say fine " I don't like this change and so I will have to deal with it or find something else that tickles my fancy" and go on. We all knew weeks ahead of time that the removable battery and the sdcard was going by by. The leaks confirmed it. Like it or not it happened and it also turned out that the battery lost 220mAh which really people isn't that much of a loss and considering that the other improvements like (processor, ddr4 ram, LTE radio, 4.1 bluetooth, ect...) it very may well surprise you, and from the few threads and articles that I have read so far that seems to be the case. Now is it really or is it the way they have used their device, who knows. but I have owned ALOT of phones in my time and I have yet no matter which phone I owned did a battery swap yet even though I have been known to carry a spare at times.
I guess my suggestion to the people that really are pissed off about the changes, write a letter to samsung or something to that affect because I'm 99.9% sure *****ing about it here in the threads isn't doing a darn thing towards change. I could be wrong.
And again Im not flaming the people that are complaining its just my opinion...
I personally won't buy a note device to throw asop on it. While it's nice to have the option, you lose all the functionality you bought the note device for any way. Buy a nexus if you are overly concerned about being able to run CM/AOSP ect. A nice optimized TW rom is all i look for with a Note as is the case with my note 4.

First step to achieving that would be simply ignoring posts with titles like this one has. Lol
Is it just me or the fact that every Samsung handset is being released with an Exynos might be a good thing due to the fact that the Exynos itself might have a higher bounty to develop for?? :fingers-crossed:

If it's like the S6, FoxFi worked great for the Verizon model.
demand and supply, as i was stating. Now that we all will be rocking Exynos, devs might be more prone to look further into it.

Back to the days of the GS3, the problem was not that there is no devs but that there is no sources.
Even now, there is no completely finished lolipop ROM.

So buy an S6 Edge Plus or an S7 Edge?

I've been offered a pretty amazing deal on an S6 Edge Plus DUOS, however having read here for the last couple of days it seems there's no decent quality tempered glass protector for this phone and quite a few of the film screens seem to peel up when used with a tough case.
For me having good protection for my phone (I've got an Otterbox on my S5 DUOS) is a must have and as I do work near water a lot waterproof resistance is highly preferred.
The cost difference between the S6 I've been offered and a S7 Edge DUOS is almost $300 so which way do I go?
It appears there is a much better range of accessories for the S7 Edge and it looks to me like the S6 Edge Plus units never really took off (mainly because the S7 was launched so soon afterwards).
What to do, what to do?

S7 better battery, better night shots, water proof
S6 edge plus better for all the rest (thinner, display, sun days camera shots, "look", cost)
S6 edge plus you can use screen protector OR the case...because the case lifts the film (it does not matter if it's glass or plastic made)
S7 I didn't test this occurrence

As my only meaning was to help as the respons you would get here are hard to reason with when you don't know the people telling them.
And your reaction clearly states that to be true, as my intentions were merely positive yet you took it as a negative remark...

As for the moving part they explain it pretty clear in the rules.

I didn't resort to weird assumptions.....your use of language was quite definitive.
You stated "....secondly this is not a question to be made in a forum....".
That's a statement, if you want to be helpful couch you language in less confrontational terms, for example you could have said "...perhaps you would find more opinions if you were more specific in what information you were looking for....", see, less confrontational and looking to be more helpful.
You may not be familiar with an English idiom "Shooting from the Hip", perhaps you would find it useful?
I'll not be posting anymore in this thread as your contribution has made it pointless.
I normally get the latest devices, but got the s6 edge plus on T mobile here in the USA a couple of days ago. I use the leasing program called jump on demand so no money down and the cost should I want to own it, ( never do as I exchange phones often ) was reduced to $485 . That was enough for me to take the obsolete version LOL.
I have edge+ and im loving it.
No experience with s7.

I love my s6 edge plus. And i love xda besides the mean people on here. Seriously dont let that one persons negative remarks stop you from posting on this forum. That was a logical question that you wanted user opinions on! Thanks for your post

its a no-brainer.
S7 edge is much more superior to the s6 edge+.
much better performance, a much much better battery, more sexy and has a micro sd slot.
the only downside is the price, which is nearly double.

What Does This Mean For Us?

According to this article Sammy decided to discontinue production of the Note 7. Therefore that should make the S7 top dog again right?.. At least until the S8 next year. What I'm saying is maybe we're going to end up with Nougat a bit sooner?.. Since Samsung only has 1 flagship to focus on at this point.. Any other thoughts out there?

It may speed up the Nougat process a bit but I wouldn't hold my breath. I know T-Mobile is in the early testing stages still so we'll see I guess.
It means we'll get it when we get it. Everything else is just Internet scuttlebutt.
Probably means that developers who had the note 7 probably changed to a S7 or Edge, which will probably speed up unlocking bootloader and more subscribers to this forum section. Hopefully we get the latest Android by Christmas.
Thoughts?

Well I'm planing get the s7 edge after retuning my Note 7 so hopefully more people coming to this way and pick up this sección with more rom , mod etc. ..
More updates faster N

This like everything else is a misunderstanding. They are NOT going to ditch the Iris scanning tech, the s-pen and the rest. They have to much invested in the pen and the apps that go along with it. It would be beyond stupid to do so. My best bet would be no more phone labeled Note since the name is so tainted. I would bet we see an S8, S8 Edge and S8 Pro next year with tons of 3rd party reports of verification before launch of any. I would also bet that the many, many other series of phones will go by the wayside so they can focus on them.
We'll see but I am very skeptical about them ditching the tech from the Note 7.

I agree 100% with you. There's no way you can just abandon something like that. Esp. when that was a huge selling point for a like of people.

someone should create the 'second screen' case like LG G8 has!

Now that would be best for the note.
That's a Flossy review.
It would be interesting.. And I bet now that LG has it(I have always thought LG was a daughter company of Samsung anymore), iit wouldn't surprise me a bit if we'r saw one come out soon...

maybe for a future samsung device, but 0% chance for the note 10. Needs to be built first party and the OS needs to customized for this. Samsung is busy on other things.
that is interesting, but no one is going to make it unless samsung finances dev. Also battery drain for extra screen, wifi/bt/usb for display would be a killer. Kinda a poor mans "fold". Like already stated you need core OS support as this is not mirroring, it's dial screen.
But with the bezeless design, a simple book case from Samsung is the kind of thing they would release.
samsung have this dual screen, it costs 2000$ and called Galaxy Fold.
Rightly said if we have one like that itll be crazy !!

Why would Samsung waste time and money on this? They have the fold that is their clear direction for the future. Not an extra dual screen for your smartphone

Because it's a good solution for all existing Samsung users, and something very 'Samsung' to sell.
I actually read an article yesterday that Samsung already has a patent for this type of device. And along with Microsoft, LG and who knows whom else, this type of display, could be an accessory add on. I mean the note for one would be a huge device with the two screens. And Samsung obviously(with all of their experiments over the years) has no problem making devices and accessories just to set how they stick and sell. Over the 8 to 9 years I've used Samsung devices(notes) they have done some clever add on experiments. They have the money to do it. After all, the note itself was originally an experiment.
But honestly, with the way they seem to think, they'd probably make it for the S series versus the note.. Ugh..
But it's all speculation..

That would take away from Fold sales though...

That's so damn cool with a reasonable prics, it even has its separate hardware (especially a battery), but the note 10 plus isn't listed.
Or you could try 3rd party... - https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/...l&utm_campaign=bck-11142019update&utm_term=#/
