Nougat Stock Email App. Question - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

Ever since I received the update to Nougat when I receive an Email the screen I am in is replaced with the open email message, for example if I am in the middle of a Text Message and an Email comes in the Email is displayed interrupting me typing etc. Other than installing a 3rd party Email App. is there a way to turn off this behavior? I have looked but cannot find it.
Thank you

Went ahead and installed Boxer, which solved my issue. Wish I knew if the issue I was describing was just to my device or not? Would have liked to stay stock on Email but oh well.

Samsung goofed up the stock email client in Nougat. Mine won't authenticate unless it is on 4G. I even have AT&T fiber!
I switched to Blue Mail. It works pretty well so far, and isn't a battery hog like Gmail.

I never had an issue with authentication. Just the issue I reported might be by design but very annoying to lose focus of the app you are currently using when new email comes in.
Have not heard of Blue Mail, I went with boxer because a co-worker recommended it.

Vibrant default mail client (Exchange, etc.)

Does anyone know who makes the default "Email" named client that ships with the Vibrant? Is that a Samsung app, Google app, or other? I ask because it seems to be *dog slow* doing even the simplest of things -- opening a message, refreshing, deleting, etc.. Has everyone else noticed this? Any fixes? In contrast, the built-in Gmail app is super-speedy.
On that note, is there a better Exchange-enabled client that I can install on this phone? Can the Android 2.1 client be ported to this phone? I need Exchange (mail, calendar, contacts) sync support. Also, I don't want to use Touchdown.
Thoughts?

Touchdown.
Yep, I saw that you said you didn't want to use it.
Touchdown's still my recommendation.
I have no problems getting exchange email in a timely manner via the default client...

It's not that I *can't* get my Exchange email -- the syncing appears to be working fine. The issue is the client itself: very slow and laggy. The Gmail client, by comparison, is fast and responsive.
Are others seeing the "Email" app slowness as well?
Lastly, does anyone know who makes the included Email app? Google? Samsung?
the default exchange client in the nexus had zero lag.

It also can't display HTML messages, doesn't highlight complicated URLs correctly (ones with & or = symbols), and has no copy & paste. At least, not from what I can tell.

Can we install the apk from the nexus on the vibrant?

I have not had a problem with the default email program. It has been fast and syncs all my email that I want it to. I did increase the size of the mail since our work uses a jpeg as a sig.

I second this. Anyway to grab the Nexus One mail client and install onto the Vibrant?
Have you tried K-9 mail?
I hate the default email app. Tried touchdown but it is not great. I switched to Google apps for business and migrated from my exchange server and I'm much happier all around.

I agree. I just moved my exchange to google apps for business too.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes, Google Apps is a fine solution, and I'm using that for my *personal* email, but my work uses Exchange 2007.
Anyhow, I'm trying out K9 Mail and MailDroid, though I can't get either of them to connect just yet. I'll keep trying.
Otherwise, this really looks like a "wait until Froyo" situation, since the initial 2.1 solution didn't support Exchange calendar syncing. Version 2.2 should have what we need.
Hurry up and wait
K-9 is much better, although it randomly goes for long amounts of time without getting some email, even though I can get them on my computer.
If it's mission criticle to get your emails on time, it's not very reliable, unfortunately (neither is the stck client).
WHOA! Hold the phone (no pun intended)...
I was looking at the "stalling" issues threads, and came across this *FIX* (Method 1) that was pretty easy to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727279
Assuming that you're rooted, just install Busybox and Terminal Emulator (from the Marketplace). Alternately, you can use ADB from your computer, though I've never been able to get this to work. I was able to complete these commands directly on my phone from the emulator and reboot.
Anyhow, after applying this change, the default mail app is ABSOLUTELY FLYING. I kid you not. Just as fast as the Gmail client, if not somewhat faster. Really amazing. To be honest, the entire phone is much, much faster all around -- not just this mail client.
The downside? Well... technically the "app data space" is limited after this update, but I was only using 28megs (of 130megs total). Not too concerned. On that note, they give you the command to check your app data space, if you're wondering.
So....I am absolutely good for now. Happy with the mail clients and their performance.
Awesome!
Thanks for your help, everyone.

The e-mail app in Android 2.2 is pretty great, I was running it on my G1 before I switched up to a Vibrant last week.
The e-mail clients from Google (before 2.2) were/are dismal, but I'm pretty sure they hired Marc Blanc, the guy who wrote the excellent ChatterMail client for the Palm Treo, who then went on to begin developing AndroidMail in 2009. I was a beta tester for AndroidMail, and in the middle of the beta he announced Google was soliciting his input about some sort of secret project. There was never another AndroidMail update after that, much to my dismay.
Then about eight months later I got my hands on the Froyo e-mail client in CyanogenMod6, and I had this nagging feeling I'd seen it somewhere before. Eventually I realized it looks like a super-polished version of what Marc was doing in ChatterMail and AndroidMail.
This is huge for me, because the problems in earlier Android e-mail apps were becoming a serious problem.
So my recommendation would be to sit tight, 2.2 is just around the corner...
For what it's worth, I don't see any slow down or lag with the Exchange client. It is just as responsive as the GMail client and everything else on the phone.

Glad to hear it... but clearly I am *NOT ALONE* on this issue: there was some serious lag going on specifically with the default mail client. To the point that I really tried to avoid checking the email in that client at all, if I could avoid it. It was really, really slow....and the Gmail app was snappy & fast.
Anyhow, the "fix" I posted has totally resolved that issue, as well as speeding up a number of other apps/functions. Really amazing!
Out of curiosity, did you ever apply a "factory reset" that many folks seem to recommend? I never did.
Nope. No factory resets. No lag fixes. No GPS fixes. Only thing I have done is root and install Clockwork. Everything has been working great for me since day one. Guess I got lucky.

Epic email issues?

Forgive me if this topic has been raised before -- I searched and didn't see anything.
I am seeing two issues with my Epic relating to e-mail I haven't seen raised.
1. Generic e-mail client doesn't sync reliably. It ran reliably for a day or two, but has stopped polling, and now the only way I can get the accounts in it to update is to go into the client and open them.
2. I cannot seem to get more than 2 gmail accounts added to the gmail client. I have three google accounts, and I had to set up my third one in the generic client after repeated attempts to add it to the gmail client resulted in server connection fails.
Anyone else seeing this? Is it possible I have a defective phone or something I did during the course of rooting (noobnl's one-click v 2.2.9) broke some functionality? Is it possible that the service responsible for the client's polling activity got broken?
Thanks in advance.
My email has been updating automatically fine. I've only had my Epic for a little over two weeks, though. I don't have multiple Gmail accounts so can't say. Also, I'm not rooted yet ( I've been waiting for the 2.2 upgrade). I'm not crazy about everything in the generic client but it does seem to work very well.
I thought I was having the same issue as OP, but I found that I guess I accidentally switched automatic updates off in the settings.
I have had my Epic since it launched and yes this has been an issue for me. I thought maybe I had something set wrong but I don't. I actually check my Yahoo acct through the browser now. It doesn't really bother me to much though so I deal with it. Facebook for Android is the same way usually too.

This is a common issue if you search around.
I've given up on the stock email app and just use K9 mail. Works perfectly. Has a few more options than the stock app too, although like a lot of open-source apps, maybe too many. I still haven't gotten all the fonts to look the way I want. But it's functional and doesn't give me any problems with syncing. An email app that won't tell me when I have new email is useless to me, and the stock app would only do that for maybe a day unless I rebooted. K9 always notifies me of email immediately.
I'm having a problem of my own. I just tried to send an attachment in the stock email app but I get a FC when I hit attach. In the gmail app however it works, gives me the option of gallery or astro. Could the FC in the email app occuring because I uninstalled the myfiles app and it defaults to it?

Exactly the same problem. Stock email client works for a while then just quits.
But anyway, thanks for the tip re K-9 mail. Just installed it and will give it a try. It is indeed considerably more complimicated and will probably take some fiddling to get everything the way I want it, but that's OK -- I guess if I wanted simple but uncofigurable functionality I'd have a feature phone or an iPhone.
Seems like the FB app does the same thing. Anyone have a suggestion for a good 3d-party FB client?
Oh, and does anyone else have more than 2 accounts in gmail?
reboot will fix it for a short period
same problem here... worked for two weeks and now only syncs if manually. Rebooting the phone gets it going again... for a few more days and then it will no longer sync again!

I had setup my exchange account and received mails just fine. Had not attempted to SEND until I read your post.
Message went out just fine.
I assume you have selected:
Use secure connection (SSL)
Accept all SSL Certs
When setting up exchange, I initially had issue with the "Domain/Username" setting. Our corp instructions suggest to leave this field NULL. Android has it as a mandatory field. I just populated with "\[email protected]". Worked.
Good luck!
i already have it set up that way
I can send messages no problem, I cannot reply to them.
Otherwise it is working.
Does anyone else have this issue?

Yes, same here
In the "domain/username" field, input it just as it asks. My xoom and every other android device I've set up for coworkers doesn't care about this field, it defaulted to "/username" and everything worked. My Galaxy tab 10.1 and a coworker's wouldn't reply to email so I set that field to "domain/username" and everything works now.
Anyone figured this out yet? Did the client with the Touchwiz upgrade fix this? I have a Verizon Galaxy Tab so I'm not sure how long it will be until I can even try Touchwiz, especially with the news that Samsung has halted the Touchwiz offering for the time being in general.
My Exchange setup is working perfectly fine on my Galaxy S and I am the IT admin for my server. Like the original poster everything works on the email client for the Galaxy Tab but I cannot reply to emails. I am using Exchange 2003 SP2 as well.

It's funny, I never tried a Reply from my Verizon GTAB 10.1 until I read this thread. Just tried it along with a new message. The new one sent, but the reply did not. I went into settings and checked "Accept all SSL certificates" and the reply sent immediately. But upon a second attempt to verify, alas, the next reply sits in the outbox... waiting.
Edit: Okay, that's weird, it finally sent after a few minutes. Strange that a new message sends immediately, but a reply only sends after a few minutes.

[Q] Update to 3.1 breaks exchange mail

I had an ota and it upgraded to 3.1. Now my exchange mail gets stuck in the outbox when replying. The only way to make it go is to forward or uncheck show quoted text. Anyone else have this problem?
nope not here
thats wierd because my xoom also has a broken exchange after 3.1 HC update.
don't know what rom you are using, however it works very well with stock 4.10.40 rom including with o/c kernel.
eventually i would suggest that you do a dalvik cache cleanup, and also remove all data from your email application in settings, and setup your exchange account again.
also where do you find the show quoted text parameter, i have no such parameter in the standard ACER email application, which i am using for exchange, and it always worked without any problems.
thanks for the info. Exchange was working fine once the corporate account release updated my acer. It only stopped after 3.1 HC came out. Same thing on the xoom, worked fine pre-3.1, post-3.1 broken. I may try to load up an old rom until this problem is fixed.
it still works fine as i told you with 4.10.42 now.
Wow, I am on 4.10.13. I hope it gets updated soon.
I have the same problem with 4.010.40.
However I realized the following:
1- sending new emails is fine.
2- forwarding emails is also fine.
3- if you reply to emails, the reply gets stuck in the outbox forever, never sent.
I tried the trial version of Moxier, and it works fine with no issue, so it is not a problem with my email server (same settings). Moxier is nice, but I prefer the stock client as it is free, and the most important is that it allows me to reply or forward emails in HTML format.
any help here? or is it a bug in the client that need to be corrected by Acer?
Update: it seems the problem happens when I reply to HTML emails (which is almost all emails), but if the email is plain text, or I opt to not include original email, it is not sent.
This is silly, as the mail thing I liked here is being able to reply with HTML formatting preserved!!!
same thing happening for me. Any news or any other threads tracking this?
From what I have read 3.2 for the XOOM fixed the issue for them.
For us.. I don't think 3.2 is out for a few weeks? (just got mine so I am trying to get caught up on these threads..)
I found this...
http://androidadvices.com/fix-exchange-activesync-problem-on-acer-iconia-a500-after-rooting/
Anyway Not sure if anyone tried this or not.
This is a really PITA I was hoping for a fix but I am not having luck finding one so far.
I just tried setting up touchdown for exchange. Auto setup nor manual work. Used same settings as as on Dell streak 5.
Seems like I would need to down grade to stock for it to work properly.
Are any of you folks rooted or using superuser by chance? Just trying to think outside the upgrade box for possibilities.
If I find a way, I'll share. Best of luck folks.
Cheers.

[Q] Email notification does not always work after KitKat upgrade

Hi guys,
i've updated to KitKat from 4.3 on my Nexus and now i am not receiving new email sound notifications unless i open the app and mark all messages as read. This is my work account (exchange) and the issue is really annoying because my daily email flow is about 100 messages. Most require my attention right away and i have to turn the phone on and off every few minutes to see if new message is there.
i've tried re-adding the account, changed notification sound, updated to 4.4.1 and then to 4.4.2 but the issue is still there.
any suggestions?
device is complete stock.

I'm having the same issue here. Did not notice the issue on 4.4 or 4.4.1 but as soon as I updated to stock 4.4.2 the issue showed up. Sometimes the unread email will be there if I open the app but no notification sound or icon. I'm also getting delayed push emails randomly. It seems to work fine for an hour or two then no emails will show up unless I manually pull and I'll get a flood and e-mails will come in normally for a while.

i am still getting emails pushed, but no notification sounds...
any ideas how to fix this???
I tried wiping my device and flashing the factory image, issues remain.
Something I have noticed is that the second I open the Email application, the messages show up in the list .. of course no notifications.. Another behavior is that when the sync is configured with "Push" it is supposed to be realtime, and before KitKat, it was that way.. I'd get an alert on my phone the next second I received an email.. However, that also seems to be screwed up as well. I was hoping this 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 would resolve the issue but it didn't.
So I contacted google about this yesterday and the first few emails went nowhere. Then they transferred me to a 'specialist', here is their response:
Hello Brian,
Thank you for your response. Not being able to sync your emails through exchange is frustrating. I would be more than happy to assist you in syncing with the Exchange server. Unfortunately, at this time in order to sync with the Exchange server you need to access a third party app through 'Google Play'. In the future there may be updates to the Android OS that may allow for syncing with the Exchange server. Currently, Kitkat is unable to facilitate syncing with the Exchange server.
If you have any further questions, concerns or downloading a third party app does not resolve the issue please feel free to reply to this email or contact us at support.google.com.
Best Regards,
Valerie

I think Google tweaked the email client to turn off notifications unless you open the app. If you get the first email, it will make a sound. If you don't open the app and check it, it will stop notifying you of further emails. I'm really not sure what the solution will be to this issue..
This is on my Nexus 5, but I have the same email client that the N4 does.

try using the application of your email provider(f.e. if you have a microsoft account use outlook.com app). that is what i do and i don't have any problem anymore. if you like to have all your different accounts in one application i would suggest to find another application. droid mail and k9 mail are quite good as far as i know

I use it for my Exchange account for work email, there's no other email provider client. I'll see if I can get droid mail or K9, but they're relatively expensive options for just this 1 issue.
