It doesn't seem like HTC asks you over the phone. Do they just get the phone and then charge you if it is an unlocked bootloader?
My phone isn't rooted, but I was asked if I'd rooted it in one of my two warranty swaps.
I'm in the process of doing that now. My rooted phone has been with HTC for a few days and I have not heard anything yet. I'll update when or if I do.
many people on these forumns have without issue.
they charged my $55 for a replacement because of my unlocked b/l.. good for the pople who got away with it though

What was the process that was executed for this? Did they call you? Say something? Did you try and get out of it?
nope. i got my inquiry a couple days after i sent it in and it said that my cost was $55. i called them and they said it was "something i did". but the only thing i would have done was unlock the bootloader. i hadnt dropped it or scratched... basically brand new. so.. much luck you. hopefully you dont get flamed for trying to rip HTC off, like me in the other thread i started haha

I'm not trying to rip them off. I will not hide it if I'm asked and I haven't been so far. What do you mean you got your "inquiry"?
I'm sending mine next week just for the dust under the screen problem. why are you guys sending yours?
Because of my atrocious battery. Although, they offered to send a free battery if I thought mine was bad.
Has anyone returned it for a full refund (or minus $55) with an unlocked boot loader? I wouldn't mind doing that and picking up the Milestone instead.

First (new) phone had a problem with the g sensor and an ill-fitting bottom plastic bit.
Second (first swap) phone had a blue tint to the screen, and a very noticeable blue tint in the bottom fourth or fifth of the screen. Also a dead pixel.
Third (second swap) phone has a much better screen, but still a bit of noticeable blue tint along the bottom edge. Also, the horizontal g sensor is off by quite a bit, and it has the same ill-fitting bottom plastic issue the first had, only much less annoying than the first.
I'm calling tomorrow to do a third swap, hoping this one won't have any issues. If it does, I'll keep whichever is better, and wait a few months before doing another swap. Maybe some of the later AT&T batches won't have the same kinds of problems.
Even with all that, this is the best phone I've ever had. I'm just being super picky after forking over $530. The swaps have been easy; I get a new one overnighted and then send the old one back in the same box with a fedex label htc provides. I have zero complaints about the service, I just wish I'd gotten a perfect phone in the beginning. =)

The Milestone also has the dust problem. I came from a Telus Milestone because it got a speck of dust and I was afraid more would get in. Now I have a speck of dust under my Nexus but it is really small and no more has gotten in.

the inquiry is what they send you in the email. its basically a summary of the repair and the cost

Well, if battery is an issue couldn't just have replaced your battery? That would cause no concern over the phone itself, so maybe they haven't checked the bootloader yet...

The battery wasn't replaced as I confirmed with them as it wasn't the battery.

Hmmm.. I'm having trouble with my N1 as well, but I'm reluctant to send it in in fear that they'll charge 55 dollars over the unlocked bootloader just to repair just the power button.

Hello everyone,
My hd2 was running fine for the past (when did it come out?) and all of a sudden after putting it into sleep mode (clicking the red button) the screen became unresponsive after turning it on again.
Before, the screen would only be unresponsive only after putting the phone in sleep mode, but now the screen is not responding wherever I am in the phone.
I did task 29 5 times with different roms/radios and no such luck.
I've read in other posts that it's a hardware AND a software problem, and there certainly ISN'T any solutions to the problem.
My question is that has anyone had an partial victories over this problem?
I'm currently in the middle east working and I'll be returning to Texas in a month.
I have a backup phone, the n97... what a wreck, I really hate that phone. If I see another "memory is full" warning, I'll blow my head off.
I guess karma is a *****, last month I was complaining hard about the HD2 (made a huge post... actually) and now it struck out on me, on the worst time.
A tip to anyone who's having a similar problem, use "MyMobiler" to control your phone via your computer, it saved me from losing my new contacts
Also, for the people who replaced their phones, do I need to call ahead of time to get a replacement or would I be able to simply walk into a T-mobile store and get a replacement? (I currently have an ongoing account with them)
Fun Fact: they sell the unbranded HD2 here for 1000 USD
mine started getting the "s.o.d." and requires a battery pull...never happened before and i'm on stock..a hard reset or replacement is in my future!
The battery pull used to worked, but not anymore. I feel that the body glove case might actually have something to do with this, since whenever there is a force pushed on the phone, that force will end up all around the screen and under the buttons.
I'm planning on selling the phone, so I guess it's a good thing. I'll get a brand new one.

You're planning on selling a touch phone, on which the touch screen doesn't work? Will you tell that to the buyer?
You should be able to exchange it for a new one under warranty.
anyone find a solution to this? I have now bought 2 hd2's that have done the exact same thing, I am on att network so I obviolsuy have no warranty, but this is rediculous, i love the phone when it works, just cant keep buying new phones that fail after 2 months, i now have 2 to send for repair to htc

what makes you think its not under warranty? its not illegal to unlock and use on another network. if tmous refuse to fix it,(though by rights they should, if you hav e proof of purchase), its still got its manufacturers warranty, it is after all less than a year old. contact htc, the most that should cost is the cost of returning it to them.
had to replace my phone cause my microusb port was all jacked up, was really loose and would only charge if i had my cord wrapped up a certain way.. had many other cords lying around which conformed "yes" it was the port and not a bad cable.. so the phone came in today and i have a big smile on my face cause its only had the 2.1 update and its a rev0002 so im all smiles cause i wanted to be able to reroot it the day it came it... #justsayin
also i know there is that possibility that i could have a refurb which i really could care less.. the phone looks new without a scratch on it so that works for me.. im not one of those that cries because i paid for a new phone when there is that possibility that it isnt.. incase someone those in the whole you have a "reburbished phone dumbass" response
It should say refurbished somewhere on the phone or so I've heard if it is a refurb.
Well, the phone you sent back was used, too.
How did you manage to get sprint to mail you your replacement? I tried and the rep had the nerve to suggest I say I lost my Evo and pay the $100 deductible and then I could get a $50 credit over a hardware defect
##786# and check if it is a refurb.
got my replacement for microusb issue as well
u will know if its a refurb if u just get the phone and back case ... of hit ##766# i think it is and there is a refurb status.
Mine is, but its hardware 003 which i think has the fixed port so im happy
Good stuff... I have usb issues as well but I'm still waiting for my replacement.I could care less if it is a refurb as long as its not beat up and doesn't have the latest OTA *Crosses fingers*

i was transferred to that insurance company whoever the hell they are and they told me that i would have to be paying the 100 bucks and i basically just said why do i have to pay 100 out of my pocket if its a defect with the phone and he said i would need to talk to a sprint rep about that so i said just transfer me back cause i dont wanna pay a deductible.. so when i went back to the sprint rep luckily it was a girl so you just gotta play the koolguy role and be all nice calling them by their names and all the good stuff.. just be all flattery which as cheesy as it sounds it usually works.. so we pretty much just started talking about "sadly sprint" and the prices and how they are cheaper compared to most other carriers, ive been with them since 98 and it was kool cause she was actually the one that brought that up so the was sort of the conversation starter, i was asking who she used and she said she used to be with att but switch to sprint after she started working for them and realized how much cheaper their plans were and we just sorta went from there.. anyways when it came down to the phone i was telling her that the insurance ppl were saying that i had to pay the hundred bucks and i was like why would they charge me if i didnt damage it, and she was telling me that that its because they just assume that damage to that port is cause by abuse, so i was telling her that i had just googled "loose microusb" and the first things that come up are topics regarding the evo so i was telling her that it has to be a defect in the phone (but you say it all kool, not **** like.. just sorta keeping the conversation going) so i then was asking her if there was anyway that i could get a new phone without having to pay the deductible because i swear i treat my phones like little kittens (cheese joke) so she said that she could sent me the phone without me paying the deductible but just to know that if it was damaged from abuse they will bill my acct, and i was like "thats a deal" so she basically said okay she will send it in the mail.. its all about finding the right person and just being fractious with them.. dude, ill even be a flirt with a dude if he is feminine enough..

You dont need to play the cool guy lol. Sprint always tells me I have to get transfered to the insurance co but then I tell them wait dont transfer me I am not paying for something that isnt damaged physicly or anything like that. This phone isnt damaged this phone has a hardware defect. The insurance co handles damaged phones and sprint handles swaps on defective phones. Sprint is always trying to pass me to the insurance co lol. They try to pull a fast one all the time. They are shady *****es. Also I dont care about refurbes they always look new to me so what the heck.
i did the exact same thing due to a damaged usb port about 1.5 months ago... got a refurbed nova 002 as a replacement and its been working fine ever since
after working at a service and repair store for sprint for 2 years I'll tell you that I've seen more defective phones from the manufacturer than I have from the Refurb warehouse lol.
BUT!!! I have had to exchange up to 5 phones in a row for someone because all the Refurbs I kept exchanging were defective and then we ran out and I had to order one haha

I believe this! I went through 5 TP2's
1st new
2nd refurb
3rd refurb
4th refurb
5th New, used for 5 days then sold it on craigslist to get my EVO.
All had issues with freezing when on the charger.
I just got my replacement today also not a referb but brand new. Mine bricked when I tried to do the OTA update. It went to reboot and powered off but would not power back on no matter what. Took to a Sprint Repair Center they could not get it to boot. So it took 7 days to get my replacement but I got it. Brand new very nice. Confirmed not a referb via the ##786#.
I simple rooted it then put the Damage Control on it. Very happy!
My question is, since I found this site
https://www.eff.org/press/archives/2010/07/26
I guess its cool to have my phone rooted an send it back cause my cameras messed up, it just has a pink screen an doesn't show no pic at all. An I know I'm probably gunna have to send it back.

they can still void warranties because you rooted your phone, they just cant get the law involved.. if i send in a rooted phone they can make me pay the deductible just because, its sucks but its business! i understand where they are coming from though, there are a lot of noobs that try things like unlocking and rooting and it would be ****ty for sprint to have to take the hit for someone elses screwup
im on my 3rd evo just got it yesterday
1st one - dust under the screen - bottom left corner, it started small but then it got worse within a week.
2nd one - screen seperation and light leakage on the bottom corners.
3rd one - seems ok, so far... about dam time!
So then I would have to unroot just to a replacement. How are the replacements? An I seen something on here about the 002 an 003,I mean can u ask for the 003? What's the difference
I just got my new, re-manufactured replacement Evo from the Sprint store, to replace my original Evo, which the GPS went out on.
This new phone works alright, but there's a "click" feeling when you press anywhere on the left side of the touchscreen, like it's not glued down all the way or something is de-laminating internally. I'm worried it's gonna cause the touchscreen to start acting up right around the time the warranty expires, not to mention it's damn annoying to use.
I've let 3 other people mess with my phone and they've all made the comment the screen felt "loose" or creaky.
My question is, do you think Sprint would replace this phone for this problem alone? I feel kind of cheated since up until the GPS broke my last Evo was perrrrfect and now I've got a kind of defected one. :\
You should just have them replace the screen for you, I believe it's free.. no point in replacing the phone if it's working well for you. You might end up with a bad phone if they replace it for you...that's only my opinion, but yeah.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
They'll probably charge you $35 for convenience even though they gave you a piece of crap.
I had a similar issue with my first replacement evo.. the whole thing creaked if you flexed the phone or squeezed it between your fingers and just made it feel cheap. I found out that when they refurbished mine they didn't tighten all the hex screws under the rear cover of the phone very well at all. If you have the right bit, tighten all your screws in the back of the phone, or have the sprint store do it and see if that fixes your issue. It did mine.
- Mike
This is actually the screen separation issue. They gave you a phone with issues and should replace the replacement.

Yeah, I agree. I remember when I got old replacement phones in the past, they seemed like brand new. These refurbished EVOs they are sending out just seem to have more signs and problems of use than it seems phones did in the past.

Asurion refurbs have always sucked, they just didn't have any for awhile so they had to use new ones.
I had them install a new screen today which seemed to have fixed the the creaking/separation issue.
Great to hear, glad your problem has been resolved!

I just plugged my Focus to my laptop and after a while when I was going to make a call I noticed it was dead. Tried pulling the battery out and then putting it back on and nothing, what happens is that it vibrates more than the usual when I try to turn the phone on, but it is still dead.
Then I took the battery out again, then put it back on, tried the 3 button hard reset and the screen showed a lot of blue lines in the center of the screen and you can see the SAMSUNG logo but not so clearly.
While I was trying everything to solve the issue, I noticed a strange smell coming from the battery and the pins where the charge goes through the phone. But just the smell, no liquid or something similar.
I am in Costa Rica, so I can't take it to an ATT store. Any suggestions? Someone with a similar problem?
I am one of the few other blessed individuals to have my Focus go haywire and stop working. Only difference is mine would do random hard resets, and then eventually it stopped loading into the phone and stuck on the Samsung logo with crazy vibrations going on. I just sent my phone to the Samsung repair center last week.
At this point, you may want to just call up Samsung directly and talk to them about it. More than likely it will be covered under the manufacturers warranty.
1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864)
Since you’re in Costa Rica I’m not sure how they would handle it, so I can’t help you there.
Thanks for the info. Yes my Focus was working great, I bought it like 6 months ago and not a single issue until yesterday.
I am not sure if I am covered by any warranty, because I bought it through eBay, so I think not even Samsung directly is covering me...
Well thanks for the help!

I actually traded my Samsung Captivate with someone for their Focus on Craigslist. I just sent in my Focus last week to the repair center, and apparently it's already ready, and most importantly covered. I think the end of August marks the one year mark of the Manufacturer’s warranty just an FYI.
Just like jaraya13 said below... do not mention Ebay. Just say you received the phone as a gift. I told them my family member could not find the receipt since they purchased the phone 8 months ago
