For anyone who has just picked up a Moto G and plans to unlock their bootloader, unlock it before updating to 4.4.4. There is currently a bug with the unlock codes on the 4.4.4 bootloader and the workaround is a hassle. The issue isn't present on 4.4.2, you can update once your bootloader is unlocked.

The bootloader is the culprit.
Mine came with 4.4.3 and it has thus problem already.

The issue, when you receive the Motorola's code and enter it in the cmd get an error message. At least, that happened to me.
Hi! I bought the phone with the 4.4.2 update, and hurried him through the air to 4.4.4. And now I can not unlock the boot loader (incorrect password). Tried to go back to 4.4.2, and it does not work. When Motorola is the solution?

Thanks @Jdiesel87 for heads up. As you mentioned that there is a workaround , can you please point out or explain what it is , so that it will help the people who updated to 4.4.4 on first day itself..
Sure thing. In order to get the fix from Motorola you need to visit the thread on their forum at:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875?commentId=798955#798955
You will need to sign up for the Motorola Feedback Network under your account settings, register your device with your IMEI number, and opt in to receive emails from Motorola. Once you have done that post on the above thread alerting the moderators that you have completed those steps.
I can't comment on anything after that point as the Motorola beta program has a non-disclosure agreement but they will help you from there.

I got my moto g 2 days ago. model XT1033 dual sim india . When I got it the android version was 4.4.4 .. and I have just successfully unlocked the bootloader. ... bt.. im not able work any custom recoveries... I flashed many recoveries using fastboot commands, bt after selecting the recovery from fast boot list , the phone shows the bootlogo then a black screen with some random lines or something.. is this becoz of the bootloader issue ?

I have this problem and i posted in the Motorola forum on wednesday... still no response. No mail, no beta, no response in the thread itself. I've followed all the steps that they asked.
I have a bad feeling.
Hello everyone,
I was using my moto x play normally and I was surfing on the internet. Suddenly the device disconnected, I pick up my phone, disabled wifi, and re enable it, since that the device freezes and suddenly rebooted. Showed me a quick animation of moto bootanim and restarted.
When the phone booted up again, the moto shows me ''optimizing apps''. I have no idea what the problem is but it is no the fifth time that the moto did this problem. I have try everything like a hard reset and the provider had replace my battery, but with no results.
I have also filmed my problem if you want to see the video I can send you a link with the URL.
Please is there anyone who can help me.

Is your phone rooted or has unlocked bootloader?
Sent from my XT1562 using Tapatalk
What does rooted and bootloader mean? I have never download some illegal software on my phone.
They're asking if you've unlocked the bootloader by getting the unlock code from Motorola, and then enabling root access.
Have you done a full factory reset or reflashed the firmware using your computer? The former is in the Settings -> Backup and Restore menu. You'll be wiping the phone and resetting all the settings to their defaults, to see if there's an application is crashing your phone.

You have to use your last synced google id, or if you had multiple ids then try with each one of those. I had frp too 2-3 times but it lets me proceed after entering the correct google id & password
Dirtycow, dpc etc..all these will probably fail because google fixes it by releasing monthly security updates.

Small tip that everyone forgets:
if you keep the setting 'OEM unlocking' in developer options enabled then you desable this FRP. (in this case it's too late of course).

Question: Can I root the Moto G5 Plus Amazon Edition?
Answer: The Moto G5 Plus Amazon Edition is rootable via initroot so long as you have not updated the firmware. Development of initroot for various phones is happening in the Moto G4 Play forums. Here is the thread for the research and scripts for initroot: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3639316

Are you sure about that? I only ask because I read through a lot of that thread and nowhere in there did I get the impression that this worked for the G5 Plus Amazon. In fact, it seemed like they specifically said it didn't work.

A bump here... I have the same question. Have things changed since November?
Bump again... Just wondering where this device stands as my mom needs a new device and I was looking at getting this one as none of the new / current Moto devices from Verizon have root methods... She uses the unlimited hotspot on her old droid turbo at the moment...
Bump..I would surely like to know also...
The answer is the same... No, it cannot be rooted EXCEPT if you happen to have an old one that was never updated, so December 2016 (?) security patch... I don't remember the exact date but it was late 2016 or really early 2017, then it was rootable by initroot.
Any update after that, or one that shipped after about May 2017, does not have an old enough version to root with initroot.
The bootloader is still not, and never will be, unlockable... Even if you purchased the ad removal, or later got your ads removed for free, this will not change.
I have unlocked the bootloader and successfully rooted this phone and am currently running ViperOS.

I originally bought my Moto G5 Plus unlocked from Best Buy. XT1687. I rooted it a couple years ago, tried Lineage out for a bit, and something else. I ended up putting it on 8.1.0 and unrooted it, however, I can't lock the bootloader. The image signature fails, and the pre activation fails as well. Everything I've found online says this means I'm trying to install an older version of Android than what's on my Moto. My Moto is only running 8.1.0 though. I'm just trying to get back to factory settings and official US retus XT1687 conditions. Any help for this would be greatly appreciated.

You need singed image of firmware to flash the device and lock the bootloader. You can get singed image from here or from Lenovo moto smart assistant.
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/potter/official/
But I suggest you to keep the device bootloader unlock to keep safe from getting hard bricked or any other problems which occurs after installing stock ROM.
