Question: Can I root the Moto G5 Plus Amazon Edition?
Answer: The Moto G5 Plus Amazon Edition is rootable via initroot so long as you have not updated the firmware. Development of initroot for various phones is happening in the Moto G4 Play forums. Here is the thread for the research and scripts for initroot: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3639316

Are you sure about that? I only ask because I read through a lot of that thread and nowhere in there did I get the impression that this worked for the G5 Plus Amazon. In fact, it seemed like they specifically said it didn't work.

A bump here... I have the same question. Have things changed since November?

Bump again... Just wondering where this device stands as my mom needs a new device and I was looking at getting this one as none of the new / current Moto devices from Verizon have root methods... She uses the unlimited hotspot on her old droid turbo at the moment...

Bump..I would surely like to know also...

The answer is the same... No, it cannot be rooted EXCEPT if you happen to have an old one that was never updated, so December 2016 (?) security patch... I don't remember the exact date but it was late 2016 or really early 2017, then it was rootable by initroot.
Any update after that, or one that shipped after about May 2017, does not have an old enough version to root with initroot.
The bootloader is still not, and never will be, unlockable... Even if you purchased the ad removal, or later got your ads removed for free, this will not change.

I have unlocked the bootloader and successfully rooted this phone and am currently running ViperOS.

That's what I heard too. Since a few days the Amazon edition is unlockable via the Motorola website and after that you root it as any Moto G5+.

It seems to be only a short while when it was possible to unlock amz locked devices. I think it was some kind of glitch because the server was down for maintenance after that.

Just got this phone today and didn't realize the model, cannot get unlock code, so they still have them locked down? I'm gonna hate going through a return and wait process again.

If you've got the Amazon edition with ads there's no way to unlock and root the device.

[CONFIRMED] Moto will honor warranty after unlock

i sent punit soni an email asking about the warranty policy on the pure edition.
"you guys are advertising unlockable bootloader on the 'pure edition'. a lot of us on the moto forums, and even more on droid life and android central are wanting to know if unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty.
motocare is giving us both yes and no answers depending on who we talk to. please get us some info on this soon. pre-orders start tomorrow and this is very important to a lot of early adopters. "
"We will honor warranty even if you unlock. Wait for official post on this."

Man, this is great news! Moto is doing good things. But the battery of the phone got me concerned. After reading about this though, I think I can look past the battery. This surely helps us hackers
Great news! So it means its fine to root on the first day (if rooting method is available) ?

for SuperSU, can't we download it from the Play Store and it can install or something? I need root. I need xposed and the Nlpwakelock module that can reduce the amount of wakelocks from Play Services, which can help the battery of this phone :good:
I mean to say was will we still get the latest firmware upgrade even when the phone is rooted ? f so then thats wonderful.

I assume if all you do is root the stock ROM, you can just unroot (completely remove SuperSU) and you'll be able to get the firmware upgrades again. if there is one single change in the /system, then firmware upgrades do not work. but by restoring it to how it's suppose to be, then the update will see no files changed and continue with the upgrade. that's how it worked with the Nexus phones, and the Moto X Pure Edition is essentially a Nexus phone with tweaks

Is root already available?
I don't believe it until I read it in the fine print. I don't plan to unlock root my Moto G or X, but if I go to the bootloader unlock page it have to not mention anything about voiding your warranty in the process.

the moto support forums manager confirmed my confirm.

Excellent! I was a little concerned price wise that we'd be looking at another $100 tacked on to the $499 to get a 'Developer Edition' with an unlockable bootloader and warranty.

me too. and add on to that no option to customize.
So I was poking around on the Moto site because I'm about to unlock my bootloader. Motorola seems to have the Pure Edition listed as a dev edition, at least according to the page where you can download the factory images.
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
So this is for pure edition only, not the phone one might buy in a store, like myself?

I was able to unlock the bootloader and root on Moto X XT1052

Hey guys,
So I didn't actually know that Motorola had unlocked this version of Moto X 1st Gen. I'm happy. I think I will be installing some custom ROMs.

You mean they allow unlocking on their website for non-dev versions? I'm on xt1060 and just tried to unlock to no avail.

Root? without bootloader unlock?

Any developers interested in creating a root for the Moto G4 Play? Especially the Verizon variant due to the fact it seems that the bootloader can't be unlocked?

There won't be one. They're considering it the same as the moto g4 Amazon prime exclusive version and neither Amazon nor moto will be releasing a bootloader unlock for the 1607.
As for the 1609, though, you could call their support line and request a bootloader unlock code, since the chart says nothing about the Verizon variant, so it's assumed that it counts as any other non-plus 4th generation moto g.

Yea I tried calling moto but they were not helpful and said they did not help with bootloader unlocks. Which is just absurd. I'm really at a loss cause I've tried everything available but I can't get the 1609 rooted or bootloader unlocked.:crying:

Yep, I went the same route too and thought I was getting somewhere. After 5 or 6 emails with support, they told me to call and ask for a bootloader unlock. I thought that meant it was going to happen, when really it was just them passing the buck and letting the phone support people tell me no.

May need the help of a some one experienced in cracking bootloader's and or rooting. I'll keep digging for a root solution and as soon as I get success I'll post here. If anyone else can help in the search or actually crack the code (as I like to say) and post it here, that would be great.

Does sunshine work for the the verizon version of thr g4 play?

Amazon E4 Bootloader Unlock/Root?

Is there a way to root the amazon ads version of this phone or are we stuck in the same boat as the verizon version?
Bump
I've been reading up on the Moto G4 Play forums and I am wondering if initroot is possible with the Moto E4. I've run the sunshine APK and it says the pretests have passed and that temproot is needed to continue. So would initroot + sunshine = unlock? Or are sunshine and initroot patched. Do I have this all wrong or??? Would love some input, thanks.
EDIT: Appears SunShine doesn't support the E line of devices, may still work though...
this tethered vulnerability was fixed back in June ...moto e4 comes out of the box with higher than June security patch .......

Have you entered your code on moto site to see if it can be unlocked? Just curious. I thought I saw someone with that amazon ads version unlock the bootloader. I could be wrong though.

Yeah i've tried it a few times but unfortunately it doesn't work, for some people it works for some reason. Hopefully someone can find a temp root solution then sunshine MIGHT work.

It would be cool if someone created an unofficial Android 8 update for the e4's based on the stock kernel and everything so we could flash it without unlocked bootloader. Or is that not possible...

without an unlocked bootloader you can',t flash files they don't get written unless signed by manufacturer so your Oreo would have to come from LenovoMoto

root
I need root with this vulnerability, then I think you can change the firmware to another version
not an amazon
Well I dont feel like waiting for a bootloader unlock that will most likely never happen, I'm sending my Amazon e4 back and getting a normal version. Good luck to you all!

I just tried this with the bootloader unlock code from my Amazon Moto E4 on Motos website..."Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking"...F*ckers...lol...
amazon just canceled the ad program, all devices will have the ads removed...

Not a chance. Zero incentive for Amazon to change the status quo.
its been a few months since ive tried to unlock my amazon e4's bootloader, so i tried it again... IT WORKED. I bought this phone on Aug. 26, 2017...so not quite a year old, but i was able to unlock it following the instructions on motos website.
It figures too...I just picked up a Pixel XL for $200 too...oh well. If you guys are still interested in unlocking, give it a try now before Amazon or Moto change their minds!

I am truly shocked! The cost/effort to maintain an exclusion list of device identifiers must have outweighed the business benefit (Amazon ecosystem lockin) assuming it was not an inadvertent disclosure. That leaves Verizon (XT1767) as the only major that can't be bootloader unlocked.
I noticed the price gap between 'prime' and 'standard' variants has narrowed of late - perhaps in recognition of revenue loss due to lack of lock screen ads (Amazon policy change) and/or more freedom to root and remove Amazon exclusive content - aka 'bloat'.
got excited, but sad to report it didn't work for me.

Unlock Bootload on Unlocked Phone without Motorola Website, is it possible?

Moto is working on their website. Of course the day I got the new 4GB memory version delivered.
Is there any other way to unlock the bootloader without Moto's website?
