Newbie Questions - Verizon HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hey All,
Picked up a VZW HTC 10 today. I have been reading a bunch of threads on here and want to find out what the current best/safest method to root install roms.
I had an M7 a couple years ago but I am out of the loop on the HTC 10.
From what I can tell, I am on software version 1.85.605.9 . I think I need to RUU back to 1.85.605.8 . Then run sunshine and do one of two options. Either S-off and lock or S-off and unlock.
Is this correct? Some rom sections such as viper (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...m-22-05-viper10-1-0-0-tweaks-hub-ota-t3384001) show unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev?
What I am a little confused as far as what I need.
Thanks!

That is correct, follow the instructions in this thread
Go S-off locked. Sunshine is the only way for vzw.

question about HTC desire hd a9191

hi how are you guys...i just bought this phone and have couple of question..first one...my software version is 2.2 is there anyway i can root the phone anybody have the instruction step by step how to root with the files which i needed...second question is when i go software update from my phone its says i have update for 2.3 gingerbread should i update it from phone or manually do it...any help will be appreciate and please reply soon...
thank you
If you are planning to root and go for custom roms etc then do not update with any official firmware. Head over to the Development forum for all you need to know on rooting, s-off, eng-off etc.
can i use visiionary tool to root or not....do i have downgrade from 2.2 to what....and then root
As mentioned above, go to Development and there you will find detailed stepbystep instructions how to downgrade first and than how to root your phone. Do not install automatic upgrade to 2.3 because it will be harder (not impossible) to root your phone (I learned it hard way after making official upgrade, but my phone is rooted and working well)

[Q] Possible to install stock Android and not lose unlocked and rooted condition?

Hi there,
I am a noob who has been following the threads in this forum and I managed to unlock the bootloader and root my Nexus 4.
Now I apologise if the following question has been asked before, but I did not find an answer that I understood.
Let's assume that in a few weeks/months a new version of Android is released. Can I install it without losing the unlocked and rooted condition of my device?
If yes, any easy (for a noob) to follow tutorial?
Thanks very much.

Next version is probably out later this year, October-November. If you apply the OTA, your bootloader will remain unlocked, but you lose root. You will only be able to root it again, if devs find a way. They usually do, just not necessarily instantly.

[Q] Recent Bootloader Unlock and root access guides

Hello everyone, I'm a brand new member with a couple questions.
I have read many threads here and elsewhere and have recently found two possible sources of information to help me finally unlock my boot loader > backup nandroid > flash cyanogenmod. Profit.
My Droid Razr M has root access. System Version: 98.18.94.XT907.Verizon.en.US / Android JB 4.1.2 / Build Number 9.8.1Q-94
Wen I started, I got used to the idea of staying with JB 4.1.2. It has worked well over the year. And having root and Titanium Backup has given me great power over my phone.
I would like to ask if it is possible to both root and unlock the newer KK 4.4.2 using the these methods I have found and my phone.
First PrankCallPimp youtube guide states I need to flash from JB 4.1.2 to Verizon stock KK 4.4.2 using RSDLite
Second Mr. Blue Coat provides a better stepwise guide outlining root access and unlock procedures, but starting with KK 4.4.2. Very Complete Blog.
I have assembled all of the files these sources suggest to have on hand during the project.
Additional questions. Is PrankCallPimp's method to flash to KK 4.4.2 using VZW_XT907_4.4.2-KDA20.62-10.1_CFC_1FF.xml files in RSDLite correct? His video cuts out after a while. After flashing KK 4.4.2 the phone will be similar to a factory reset and be susceptible to OTA updates. Currently I use Voodoo OTA to prevent updates. Should I reinstall Voodoo OTA to prevent Verizon pushed updates or go from there to root access and boot loader unlock procedures?
I have never liked following a youtube guide and wonder if there is a printed version I could review before starting. Also I installed RSDLite and my phone can be detected by the program.
I think if Mr. Blue Coats guide is acceptable to everyone, I could follow it with no problems.
What I'm worried about is giving up my currently profitable root access on JB 4.1.2 to go to KK 4.4.2.
It seems that if I really want an unlocked boot loader, I must take KK 4.4.2
If these two guides work, with someone's help, I would be happy to join them into a single clear guide to post here.
I lack the experience most of you have so I'm reaching out with these questions before I even consider going through with this.
Thanks All. Ps. I'm in no hurry.
Read this thoroughly
Thank You
Thank you for the ultrafast help!
There was my answer: 4. RESTORING / UPGRADING STOCK FIRMWARE.
And all the additional tools required for root access and boot loader unlock.

questions about root and unlock bootloader

Hi all,
I want to ask to confirm a few things since my experience with android almost came from samsung notes, and I always unlock bootloader and root it right after I get my phones. Thanks in advance.
I bought a moto x pure edition from bh photo recently, and was thinking about unlock bootloader, root and enjoy the some features that need root access and/or customized room.
But I see that the vanilla (manufacturer) rom is very good and the release of OTA updates are relative reliably fast. My questions is
if I unlock bootloader and root, do I still have the OTA capability (I have to ask since I have not explore a lot customized room side of the moto x pure edition)?
if yes, what will happen if the OTA is applied? phone relocked or bootloader unlock and root access as usual?
Thanks
If you unlock bootloader, you will still have OTAs, but, im not sure if you root will still have OTA, i think yes, i think you loose OTAs if you change something in the firmware, but im not sure with the root tbh...

If you are unlocked only, it has zero effect on updates... if you unlocked and modified in anyway (root, TWRP, Xposed, whatever) the update with fail and either get stuck in recovery or bootloop, usually just wiping cache will get it booting again. OTAs cannot be applied unless you are purely stock.
Moto's will not relock the bootloader unless you specifically do it, but really there is no need to ever... other than purely security, there is nothing that can be regained by relocked that was lost in unlocking, including your warranty. Once you have been issues an unlock token, whether it is used or not, your warranty is gone forever.
Also be aware that rooting Moto's on Marshmallow is a bit different than older ways of rooting and requires a few extra steps, do your research on systemless and you won't have any problems.

URGENT question regarding s-off, root/custom recovery/custom rom

Hi i just got the u ultra, i need some informations regarding the s-off thing, since I'm totally new to htc phones.
As far as i understood, getting s-off on nougat requires a paying service (like sunshine)...what i dont know is that if i really need it.
I want to flash a custom Rom, with a custom recovery and root access. Do i have to be s-off to achieve this?
Being forced to pay for it, might make me return to phone or not...so it is kind of important.
I will be really grateful to anyone who will help me.
Thanks.

I don't have s-off, only bootloader unlocked (this for free from the HTC website directly I think).
For only custom recovery and cRom (including everything else, e.g. magisk, xposed and so on) that's enough.
