Actually I tried the incredible for about 45 seconds until I realized the form factor of the phone is horrible, and the screen colors are so far off, Kobe Bryant was orange. AMOLED on that phone is a deal breaker. The EVO 4G has far far far better color accuracy.
Looks like im making the switch to Sprint from Verizon. All my areas I need coverage are rock solid, and with rooting, ill hopefully be able to roam on Verizons towers when need be
Hehe... old Alltel towers (now equals all Verizon towers) hacked...through PRL no need for root... even though its easier than pie. Check Evo development forum
Just curios. Theres a lot smarter people here than I, and I figured somebody could figure it out
I highly doubt it. But who knows with the devs on here they have pulled off some amazing stuff.
4G LTE uses the 700Mhz frequency band, not possible for the Droid X radio.
Although, if Verizon supported HSPA+, high speed 3G, it might be posssible to get much better 3G speeds.
No 4G hardware
No 4G hardware in the phone,so it is impossible.
3G can support much higher speed that we ussually get.
All the carriers are overloaded now with their data service and trying to charge extra anyway they can to push the upgrade cost to us.
It might be able to be accomplished with a hardware mod. It would not be worth it, and probably incredibly difficult though

I think he is meaning hardware wise by replacing the radio chip itself, like how the Xoom situation is to be played out.
Official support from Motorola for an upgraded radio chip to the DX would be a definite no, but Im sure it would be possible to upgrade the chip (As long as it would fit correctly and is able to be solder to the board correctly) and firmware wise to be configured for the 4G LTE radio. Of course thats alot of work, time, research, and the possibility of hard bricking the device.
If motorola continues the way they have physically with the OG Droid and the DX we might get a DX3 or a Droid4 that are 4G LTE with almost mirror physical looks and feel (And hopefully some much better CPUs and GPUs along with some good RAM), but hey, how many times has Moto listened to us in the past?
Not Likely
As stated before, 4G LTE access for the Droid X would need an alteration in the cellular radio. Although it is possible, it would require some soldering and probably quite a bit of risk for damaging the original Droid X hardware.
Probably the only other option is to wait for a Moto Droid with 4G built in such as:
Revolution™ by LG
DROID CHARGE by Samsung
ThunderBolt™ by HTC
There is also the Motorola Droid Bionic (not yet released) which has s dual core processor.
I would probably wait for a dual core HTC based 4G/LTE phone since LG has stated they will not lock their bootloaders. Unlocked bootloaders makes it much easier for the dev community to modify Android.
It wouldn't work even if you could solder it in. The kernel would have to support it.
does anyone know if and when a Xoom for ATT is coming out, possible with 4G? I really want a tablet computer, and want an Android, not the Ipad 2. Also, is it possible to take a Xoom from another provider and root/make it usable in the US?
Verizon is the king!
First of all, why would you want an ATT Xoom? Verizon is the best and most reliable out of every other provider. Verizon has the download and upload speeds that can actually be called 4g, and also has the greatest coverage. The rest of the pack has maybe what you would call 3.1g speeds, lol... lame.
Anyways, there won't ever be a Xoom for ATT or any other provider for that matter. The Xoom is a Verizon exclusive just as the Droids are. In fact... the Xoom is a Droid device in reality. It was originally called the Droid Xoom, but they decided to remove the Droid name a week before its intial launch, just to leave it with the name "Xoom." Much like how the Nintendo Wii was actually officially known as the Revolution, they changed the name about a week before launch day as well. Just a little side fact for ya, lol.
This topic won't get very far but there's my 2 cents worth.
P.S. I'm guessing you mentioned ATT because you have a phone with their service? And you would like to stick with your current provider for a tablet as well? If so.. that makes perfect sense. Let's hope you can figure something out. I have the OG Droid and the Xoom.

AT&T speeds are actually faster than Verizon's where Verizon doesn't have LTE yet (most places), and Verizon phones don't work if you want to use them in Canada, Mexico, or Europe, since Verizon uses their own proprietary CDMA stuff, while the rest of the world uses GSM/HSDPA.

First... Yeah you can buy an unlocked Xoom, but what are you going to do with it?
Second... Read this http://tinyurl.com/3nj9jea
To say that ATT is faster because Verizon's 4g coverage is still growing and not in all areas just yet is absurd. Like I said, all other network providers are running basically 3.1g speeds. 4g LTE currently has an upwards of 15+mbps down, and 2+mbps up. Yes, the 4g LTE coverage is not all there yet... reason being? It is new to the scene! Just how Honeycomb is to the tablet world.
They are taking their time because they know they already have all the tools to have the coverage and speeds to be crowned a real 4g network. All it is now is a matter of laying the rest of the tracks down to finish the project, which will take time to set up all the towers, and finalize everything.
I don't know about you, but... I would like to have real 4g speeds with real 4g coverage for my devices, not some cheap 3.1g knockoff that uses the same 3g technology. Can you believe that they try to pass that crap off as 4g? Verizon's 4g LTE network is built from scratch from the ground up, unlike the rest. The rest of the providers just took the 3g they had, and made it a little bit better, yet calling it 4g. Why do you think it is taking Verizon longer to expand their 4g coverage? Because they are the only one's to actually completely build a whole new wireless networking system.
Also... Verizon is introducing global devices one at a time, in due time. Some global Droids include: Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro, and the new Droid Incredible 2. The list will grow with tablets and other devices included as the network continues to grow and expand. Verizon is the boss, that cannot be denied. Cheers!
Why are you so keen on sticking verizon down his throat?
He never mentioned verizon once in his OP?
Well, I understand that verizon covers 100% of the US with 3g/LTE and he does NOT travel overseas at all.
oh wait guyz.....
@OP- Just pop the sim card in to whatever country you want to assuming the bands match.

Lol, who's doing that? My last post wasn't about the OP, instead I was defending Verizon Wireless as a whole. The guy I quoted shot off a little haha comment in a way that it was trying to put Verizon down. "AT&T speeds are actually faster than Verizon's where Verizon doesn't have LTE yet". That can be taken as a hidden shot in the dark at a joke. Just saying. Anyways, enough bickering. It is pointless.
To the OP: It sounds like you really want ATT as your tablet service provider. Since you do not want an iPad, and want an Android device instead, might I suggest you check out this Android Honeycomb tablet on the ATT network:

Well, I got my newly upgraded to 4G LTE Xoom back yesterday. I am extremely pleased with how quickly the process went and how well the Xoom runs after the upgrade. I never had a Verizon contract on my Xoom. I only used it on WiFi. I pulled the 4G LTE SIM card out of my Bionic and stuck it in my Xoom and fired it up, and it worked.
I really don't know what the implications are of doing this. I only left the card in the Xoom for about ten minutes, then put it back into my Bionic. I was thinking about going to the Verizon store and asking them about it, but I am sure that they will just tell me the same thing they told me before I got the upgrade...that there is no way it will work.
It seems that for people who were grandfathered into an unlimited data plan on their phone, this would allow them to move their unlimited plan to the Xoom.
On a side note, the phone still functions as a 3G smartphone with the 4G LTE SIM card removed. For those who live in a 3G market, pulling this card out should not make any difference because the LTE is disabled for now anyway.

Why pull out the sim? Are you going to get longer battery life with the sim out?
Will that make the XOOM only work on 4g, or will it enable 3g also even if the XOOM has never been activated?

Only 4G...for the 3G to work, the Xoom has to be activated. Still pretty cool. I have the 4G hotspot on my phone, so it really is of no consequence to me. I just figured I would let you guys know that the 4G Xoom can get on the 4G network with the SIM out of a Bionic.
Has anyone tried putting an activated Xoom sim in an LTE phone to see if that works too?

This is neat, and I have unlimited 4G hotspot on my Bionic, but I hope to heck Verizon doesn't decide to close this little hole, because it'd be a nice perk for those of us who fork over massive amounts for both 4G and hotspot, and are using the tablet with the hotspot anyhow, to be able to just put it right in the darn tablet.
Some are saying they cannot use data while on a voice call, yet some claim they can. The official VZW response is supposedly that it won't happen until the Advanced Calling 1.0 update "by the end of the year".
Would those of you with one in hand please confirm if this is different depending on which network type you are on. i.e. 3G, 4G LTE, or 4G XLTE?
I was ready to pick one up until I saw this since this is a very important ability for me. It's like it is 2008 all over. I'm pretty shocked they would release a device "temporarily" with less ability than the previous generation.
Thanks
No you can not
We'll have to wait just like the Moto X.
The Sony Z3v also can not do Simultaneous Voice+Data .
I wonder if the Nexus 6 will also have this issue?
Is this just 3G and data? I'm not understanding why u can't use 4G and talk at the same time.

From what I've read, the Moto X (2014) and the Droid Turbo share the antenna for the 3G and 4G radios opposed to previous generations to cut production costs. Older phones would use 3G to talk and 4G was used for data I believe. If you set an older 4G phone to LTE only, you couldn't make a phone call, but could surf the net. Until they update the software that administers VoLTE to handle data at the same time, we are stuck back in 2010.
You can't talk and use data at the same time, unless you are in a VoLTE market.
Ugh. My OG Moto X can do this. Think I'll just wait to get this until the VoLTE update.

Wow...that is terrible. How do you launch a phone in Oct 2014 without a key function from 3 years ago???
So this mean I won't be able to use my navigation (Google maps / Waze) while talking on the phone?
Actually you can use voice and data at the same time... When using an AT&T sim card
It is only on 3G but will do voice and data. Until VoLTE for VZW this just won't happen.
Just to confirm. Few phones can do EVDO and 1XRTT Voice simultaneously (Rezound, Thunderbolt, S3(I think)), but every Verizon 4G phone to date that I am aware of can use LTE and 1XRTT simultaneously. It would be ridiculous to drop LTE when making a phone call!
Please tell me this thing can use LTE on a phone call.
No. There is no simultaneous voice+data. Unless you're connected to an active WiFi.

Nope. When on LTE, I made a phone call and the data went to grayed out 1x.

Isn't it where both phones need to be Verizon VOLTE enabled and both parties need to be in Verizon VOLTE markets?
So lets say when the Droid Turbo gets VOLTE... can I talk & surf at the same time while calling my sister who is on AT&T? Or am I screwed unless she gets on Verizon and her area allows VOLTE?
I find this hard to believe.
Does this impact users outside US (and hence not on VZ network)?
I'm going to shoot myself. I cant believe I didnt check on this before ordering. Every phone I've had in the last few years starting with my old Thunderbolt could do simultanious voice/data using the different bands. I thought the issue was basically limited iphones.
They better enable the VoLTE and fast. I cant go too long without it. May have to return the phone and re-order once its been enabled. Its too important a feature for my daily business needs.
Yeah this is a key feature where I'm like WTF. Im gonna hold off for a bit and see what happens and pray the Nexus 6 won't be like this since its a phone that is designed to run on all carriers.

If the Moto X and DROID Turbo are like this, I bet the Nexus 6 will be as well, they are all very similar.
Well i was thinking that to but being that the nexus is a one device for all carriers unlike moto x and turbo i wondered if that antenna would be made the same.
Stolen from the comments on a long Droid Life thread about this exact thing:
Moto X 2nd Gen does not do voice/data. Z3v does not. Droid Turbo does not.
These can do LTE data and voice: DNA, Moto X (2013), S4, G2, One M8, S5, G3, Note 4. (and most other phones pre August 2014.)
Nexus 6: Don't know yet but not looking great.
Once VoLTE is enabled, how does it work? Will I be able to get voice and data with anyone as long as I am on LTE? Will it be limited to only other Verizon customers who also have VoLTE enabled? if it is the later, I need to convince a manger to let me return this phone, ie, it was a mistake to switch from the Note 4 if true.
