hi,
I recently bought a nexus 4, when I first used it with stock rom, everything was fine with the wifi speed i was getting from my internet connection (about 35 Mbps). So i tried out a few custom roms until i noticed an issue with the wifi speed , suddenly i wasn't getting more than 0,8 Mbps on the same connection, I thought it was an issue with the rom so I wiped and formated everything on my phone and used the nexus tool kit to flash a factory image.
Still the same problem, I again tried wiping and re flashing, but it does not change anything.
Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be ?

Your issue sounds similar to what happened to me. One day without any other changes my wifi speed tanked and the connection was iffy despite having strong signal and a clear wifi channel. In my case I fixed the problem by switching the router security from wpa to wpa2. I have no idea why that would help, but help it did. Maybe there is an obscure corner case radio bug. Maybe this will give you some ideas to try. My router is an old WRT-54G. Good luck.

I am already connected through wpa2, so it can't be that.
I heard wifi connectivity is controlled in the kernel, so I tried a few different ones, on all of them the same problem, the strange thing is Im always getting near exact 0,8 mbps,
ok now I switched off wifi optimisation (which cant be the reason because it was switched on all the time and it was working until recently) and the speed was normal again, switched it on again, still the speed is what it should be. Strange problem but I guess it is solved.
My phone has problems staying connected to wifi. It's often disconnected and has to reconnect when I wake my phone up (even though it's set to not turn off during sleep) and it'll disconnect and reconnect sometimes even when the phone is awake. I've read about people having problems with D-Link routers, but none of my routers are D-Link. The problem seems to have improved a lot after I flashed my modem to the MDL modem, but it still comes up. Does anyone have any solutions or would anyone know what could be causing this? I'm currently running the Wicked rom but I had this problem even when my phone was completely stock. Has anyone had this problem go away after switching to an AOSP-based rom?

I still have this problem, it disconnects and reconnects minutes later. I am on stock, stock kernel and rooted. could it be a root problem?
It can't be a root problem because I had this problem even when the phone was completely stock. I'm wondering if it's a TW problem, which is why I asked if anyone still had this problem after switching to AOSP (the Wicked rom I'm running now is TW).
If it were me, I would try a different modem, but thats just me.
Is there a thread with the available modems?

Just because it isn't a DLINK wireless ap doesn't mean you won't issues. All the consumer-grade wireless routers/ap's share a narrow range of chipsets made by broadcom, atheros, etc.. So, the brand has nothing to do with it.
I would suggest getting a logcat if you can or try another wireless ap somewhere else. I've got a TPLINK wireless router with OpenWRT flashed, runs flawless.

I never said that only D-Link routers have problems. There's a well-known issue with D-Link routers so I wanted to state up front that I don't have any D-Link routers in case anyone wanted to suggest that it could be the cause.

Thanks, I actually came across that solution already but I don't seem to have that option under the advanced options. I'm not sure if it's because I'm running the Wicked rom.

He said the option was only available while originally connecting and setting up the connection for the first time. Maybe you can try to delete the wifi connection all together and then let it re-detect and go through the set up process again...if that is an option.
My phone was doing this on my friends router but not on my home router. He searched google & found something stating that the S4 dont like routers with AES encryption for the security. He changed his router security to TKIP+AES encryption & the next time I was there wi-fi stayed connected with no constant reconnect problems. Buuuut, my home router security is just AES & I have no issues connecting to it, yet at least. Dont know if this will help anybody else out but its worth a shot to play with your routers security settings.
I thought I had an issue with my I337 S4 do the same thing.turns out my phone was just bouncing around trying to connect to 6 other open WiFi signals I've used
So just to give an update, I tried installing another router in my house as an access point and the phone has no problems staying connected to it, so there's definitely something that the phone doesn't like about the other routers that I'm running. I'm reluctant to say that there's anything "wrong" with my old routers because no other device had a problem staying connected, but if anyone else experiences the same problem, changing routers/APs could work. Fwiw, my old routers had Broadcom chipsets while the new one has an Atheros chipset. I'm going to try updating the firmware for the old routers to see if it helps (I run DD-WRT and Tomato on all of my routers).

I'm having the same constant-disconnect issue as well and searching for solution.
I'm rooted, on stock rom and cant find any "key management" option at initial connect. Issue was happening when unrooted as well.
No issues when connected to router at work, but have connected two other, albeit older android devices to home router without issues.
home router is dlink dir655

Thanks, forgot to mention the router is already set to TKIP+AES.
However, upon confirming this morning, it is set to auto WAP/WAP2. Will try WAP2-only tonight, unless this won't make a diff?

WPA/WPA2 decreases the bandwidth of the router. WPA2 will support a full 300Mbps link state. So yea, they are different, but it may not fix it.
I have a Cisco EA6500, so I'm connected to the AC 5Ghz band, and it works flawlessly. WPA2 Personal
My bad on typing WAP instead of WPA.
Doesn't sound like fully opening up the bandwidth will fix it.
Has something to do with how the phone manages the encryption keys?
I was having Wifi issues on the 6P. Connected to home wifi but no internet. The thing is, the wifi would still work randomly. It's possible that it works most of the time but as soon as I go out somewhere and out of the home wifi range, it sometimes messes up when it tries to reconnect to the network.
And yes, I realize it may not be a phone issue but maybe the router (Asus N66U with Tomato firmware).
/edit - well, I spoke too soon and I guess it's not the static IP causing the wifi issues.
It turns out it was a firewall app called AFWall+
Might want to update the title then. Although I do have that issue where when I get home i have to turn off/on wifi on my phone to get a connection.

It's hard to say. This problem seems to be random. I haven't experienced it today. The only change I've made is update Cataclysm and ElementalX to the newest versions after installing the latest Android security updates. I can't guarantee I won't experience the problem again since it was happening on and off before.
No amount of disabling wifi and restarting my 6P would get internet connectivity back when the problem is happening. It just seems to start working again randomly. Is that what happens to you too?

I can't really explain it. It says I am connected to WiFi, and speedtest still works along with web browsing most of the time. But the main thing that doesn't work is my google account syncing (so emails wont appear, or delete from ym account when I do so in the app) as well as the play store not downloading or updating apps. I keep seeing issues with 5ghz, so I am gonna try connecting to my 2.4ghz as well as setting the wifi to 2.4 only, as of right now it is working. But its like you said random, and when it does happen restarting is no help. I also just set my phone to use a static ip as I heard that helped some people. I just found it weird that you have the same router and had issues.
Im on Pure Nexus with ElementalX latest update, don't have the latest security patch though.
Its only my Nexus 6p, and it seems I have no issues when I am on my girlfriends wifi. SO I am hoping the 2.4 and static IP solve it, however that sucks cause I want to use my 5ghz, as there are less devices and I get a more solid connection.
I found out it wasn't a problem with the phone or 6.0.1 at all. It was due to a firewall app called AFWall+. I figured it out when I realized internet connectivity would return when I disabled it.
Now, you might think that the app should have been one of the more obvious causes. That's true... but I had it set to Blacklist mode to only block certain apps. Internet wasn't working system wide and it only occurred on Wifi whereas LTE worked fine. So, uninstalling it seems to have fixed the problem and it hasn't happened since. Perhaps it's an issue with systemless root.
I am stumped.
I own an xt1641 since the official update to Nougat I have wifi connectivity issues. I have ruled out my home network and any local interference's on my 2.4 Ghz channel.
In an attempt to resolve this I have rooted and tried several rom's and kernels on my device but the same issue persists.
I will be connected with no issues and then connection drops, sometimes it will recovery rapidly. Other times the device requires me to manually re-connect to the wifi network. The issue is present across multiple wifi networks and seems to be very random. Not sure if this is a hardware issue or firmware/software issue.

May you tell in detail exactly what you try to do while connecting data(like when or how it disconnects automatically).
Try this :
Forget all wifi then connect to single wifi. See if it is connected to it without dropping down. You said you have tried different roms, does connection time changes(eg. like it at start was connecting for 5min then dropped now has increased and is less frequent or is random).
I have never come across with search problem. I do got drops but conditions were applied (like at some conditions only it will drop).
Well if anyone has to know it, they will help you

Hi,
Is anyone having an instability issue with WiFi connection? This happens at home and work, but my phone at times disconnects from WiFi. It also struggles to connect to "saved" WiFi at times. For example, I came home today, and it didn't connect to my home network, so i turned wifi off and on, and kept checking it, and it eventually connected. I'm on stock (never rooted this phone) 8.1, but I've had this problem even before updating to 8.1. If you have any suggestions to fix this issue, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you,
I haven't experienced that behavior. Did you try resetting your network settings? If that doesn't work I would do a full factory reset but if you do it's important to select the fresh start option in setup instead of restoring from a Google backup. The backup restores some system and app data and can easily restore whatever is causing your problem. Sometimes data gets corrupted and your phone needs a fresh start.
i have seen this issue. It only happens on my 5ghz network. When i connect to my 2.4ghz network it is stable.

I'm having a similar issue where after the phone has slept for a while, the wifi basically doesn't respond anymore until I've turned the wifi fully off and back on. Signal shows fine even though no data flows. Happens both at home and my office. This wasn't an issue at all since owning the phone through all the betas. Only started happening with official Oreo release. Forgetting networks didn't work. I'm not willing to reset the whole device right now, too much to redo. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and has a solution.
I have one phone that sort of logs off. It says "tap to login" it is a google dialogue. It is on my home WiFi at 2.4GHZ. I will be doing a reset within a week to see if it fixes things...
I am doing my Hard Factory Reset now....wish us all luck.
8.1 Oreo broke my Essential, I want it back...
More to come...
Mine was doing that as well, after resetting my router no connection issues.
HARD Factory Reset
Well, it's done.
It has to be done and done as hard as possible. No reinstating ANY previous software settings of any kind.
I linked to my WiFi (non 5G) after reboot, and there has since been no issue.
This doesn't mean the problem has been solved. Days may pass before it surfaces again...
In the meantime, Telus, who provides me this service has stated that an in store test of device should show whether or not this is a warranty issue. Connection to an in-store WiFi should show quickly if it's a firmware issue, and a discussion can begin about device exchange.
That's all for now.
Good luck.
MF
No issues at home or work connected to an N router at home and an AC router system at work. Also no issues connecting to various public WiFi nodes.
I second elkay, same exact problem I'm experiencing. I may consider a hard reset on my phone soon, in hopes that it resolves the issue. Otherwise, I will continue running on my mobile network. Hope an official solution or fix comes soon.
Unfortunately, even a hard reset didn't fix it for me. I did end up buying a new router a couple days ago which does seem to have fixed the issue in my home (was buying a new one due to wifi coverage in corners of the house anyway), but that obviously won't solve the issue at work. Not sure where the incompatibility is. FWIW, I went from a Netgear R7000 to an R7800. Both running DD-WRT with same configuration.
I had this issue with a new PH-1 that updated to 8.1. I was not able to connect to an 802.11n router with cloaked SSID without difficulty, when saved, amidst several other issues, that I attributed to the 8.1 update. I downgraded to 7.1.1 and the wifi issue is resolved.
I just got an Essential Phone during the prime day deals and was experiencing the same issues. Download at 20mb/s for a couple of seconds then tank to 0.2mb/s.
Has anyone tried the latest Android P beta 3? It seems to have fixed my wifi throttling.
My phone was doing OK until a recent update. Now my phone disconnects and reconnects WiFi like crazy. Sometimes a dozen times in a few minutes. This is driving me crazy.
If you do not have Pie on your device load it.
I had serious WiFi connection problems on the last Oreo update but when I got the Pie update they disappeared and the phone has been fine since.
I'm on Pie and I still have this problem where the wifi will drop randomly every minute or two, but sometimes it's fine.
That's bizarre.... I had the one horrible Oreo update (as did a lot of others reporting in here) but since Pie it's been ok. I have both 2.4 and 5Ghz here but usually run on 2.4 as my router is in the next room and 5Ghz doesn't get through the walls nearly as well.
