WIFI extremely slow - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
I recently bought a nexus 4, when I first used it with stock rom, everything was fine with the wifi speed i was getting from my internet connection (about 35 Mbps). So i tried out a few custom roms until i noticed an issue with the wifi speed , suddenly i wasn't getting more than 0,8 Mbps on the same connection, I thought it was an issue with the rom so I wiped and formated everything on my phone and used the nexus tool kit to flash a factory image.
Still the same problem, I again tried wiping and re flashing, but it does not change anything.
Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be ?

Your issue sounds similar to what happened to me. One day without any other changes my wifi speed tanked and the connection was iffy despite having strong signal and a clear wifi channel. In my case I fixed the problem by switching the router security from wpa to wpa2. I have no idea why that would help, but help it did. Maybe there is an obscure corner case radio bug. Maybe this will give you some ideas to try. My router is an old WRT-54G. Good luck.

I am already connected through wpa2, so it can't be that.
I heard wifi connectivity is controlled in the kernel, so I tried a few different ones, on all of them the same problem, the strange thing is Im always getting near exact 0,8 mbps,
ok now I switched off wifi optimisation (which cant be the reason because it was switched on all the time and it was working until recently) and the speed was normal again, switched it on again, still the speed is what it should be. Strange problem but I guess it is solved.

Help with fixing Wi-Fi

I have reached my wit's end trying to resolve my problems, so I'm posting here for ideas on fixing this, any input is appreciated!
When this started I was on stock, rooted, ICS 4.0.3 and had been for months. My wife has a nexus s with the same config and hers works fine.
Last week, my daughters sidekick 4G stopped having wi-fi internet connectivity. I turned her wi-fi off, then back on and it was fine and has been ever since. Later that night, my nexus did the same thing, the same procedure resolved it. Ever since then, my wi-fi will only work for 1-5 minutes after turning the wi-fi on. This is the only thing I can think of that changed that could have caused this. This was the first night we connected her sidekick to wi-fi.
The wifi symbol is up there, it'll be blue for up to half an hour, but won't have internet connectivity for long. One thing I noticed pretty quickly was that even though the grey wi-fi symbol is there, I can't access the router settings at 192.168.1.1 from the phone. I thought the grey wifi symbol still indicated I was connected to the router still, but it's not working. Each time this happens, I can turn wi-fi off, back on immediately and it'll work for 1-5 minutes. It appears that the more I constantly use it after turning it back on, it seems to maintain connectivity longer.
Last weekend, just after these issues started, I visited my sister and my phone operated on her wi-fi all weekend just fine.
When I came back home, my problems started immediately.
Here's what I've tried in pretty much the order I tried them:
I started by uninstalling avast, facebook, and autostarts
selected "Forget network" in access points screen and reconnected
Factory reset
Wipe dalvik cache & fix permissions
see if it worked without sim card in (it didn't)
flash GB broadcom driver
Switched router channel from 6 to 1
flash stock 2.3.6 (wi-fi problems still present)
flash OTA ICS (still had problems)
flash stock 2.3.6
flash OTA ICS
re-root
Flash PixelROM 1.60 LiteTouch
factory reset router (No wifi problems on using open network and default SSID for 30 minutes!)
resetup WPA Personal security and rename SSID same as before
Worked for another 15 minutes or so after this
flashed stock 2.3.6
flashed OTA ICS
re-rooted
Restored nandroid backup - quit working after this step
Factory reset router - worked for about 15 minutes, I decided I was ok so I setup security and SSID as before, then it quit working again
flashed PixelRom 1.60 LiteTouch
flashed stock 2.3.6
Flashed OTA ICS - THIS time I did not restore my google backups from the cloud, fearing that this was somehow restoring something that was causing me problems. It did not help.
Changed SSID on my router and reconnected phone
I have spent countless hours trying to fix this. I don't believe it's the hardware because the router factory reset seems to help quite a bit, works fine on unencrypted default router settings, and it worked on my sister's wi-fi.
I have nmap and wireshark and have a basic working knowledge of them. I have adb setup and usable on my computer. I also have dd-wrt installed on my router and have for years. Is there any kind of IP or hardware logging I could perform with these tools to help figure out what's going on??? ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!!
Well i'm no expert with any of this, but it sounds more like a router issue.. If both your sidekick and nexus have the same characteristics of failing wifi, it cant be the devices..
If you've already reset your router and it does the same exact thing, maybe it is something wrong with the router itself. You said it connected fine at your sisters house, so it cant be any hardware within the phone.. The only thing I could think of is maybe try a different router in your house to see if it works? If that helps get rid of the connectivity issue, then you can just get a new router and be happy with the wifis
I don't think a *hardware* problem with the router would only affect 1 device connecting to it wirelessly. I would think that kind of issue would affect all devices on the network.
Which makes me wonder if there's a setting on the router that may be causing it somehow, or some combination of packets might somehow cause the router to block my phone.
But again, I'm open to ideas here and I appreciate your input. I think getting another router will be my next step if I don't hear anything better by the time I get my next paycheck.

Ohh, I thought you had said that both the sidekick and nexus were having problems connecting. My bad.
But yeah have you changed any settings on it lately? Or messed with anything related to the router? Some setting may be kicking your device off after 5 mins, maybe some frequency setting or something dumb like that, I have no clue.
I know how it feels to have funky wifi, so I was only trying to help. good luck
Have you removed DD-WRT from your Wireless Router and back to stock OS? I had a Linksys router with DD-WRT and after about 3 years it started working so weird it became useless with any device. Had to buy a new one.
BTW, are other devices connecting fine to this router?
As swamp goblin stated, I would try with a new router.
It sounds like an issue on your router (or AP) with mixed client settings. I have had this issue with an old Netgear AP.
Try forcing "WPA2 with AES only" if all clients support it, otherwise force "WPA with TKIP only". If you have mixed B/G/N devices, force the fastest mode that all devices support. I use "G only".
Then remove and re-add the router on all your devices.
Also check for router firmware updates, and if you use DD-WRT firmware, find the Wiki page for your model and revision and use the suggested build there. The DD-WRT database they have is a mess and should not be used!

I haven't removed it. I thought I had a model that couldn't go back to stock, but I WILL be looking into this. The other devices connecting fine are Sidekick 4G, Wife's Nexus S, Acer Aspire one, HP tx2000 laptop, and my wife's HP laptop. I also have my satellite receiver connected via ethernet.

THIS FIXED IT! I tried it first since it was the simplest solution and I've been 4 days with no loss of connectivity since I changed it to AES only, which all my clients do support! Thanks so much!

Wifi problems, yet another one...

Here's my problem, and I've seen many problems with wifi here and on other forums but nothing exactly like this.
When I'm at work, my phone connects to the network over there without any problem but, every time I come home, it simply shows my network as "Not in range", even at 2 feet away from the router (WPA PSK security). I've tried turning wifi off and on, resetting my router, "forgetting" my network on the phone. Nothing does the trick unless, I restart my phone and then it connects automatically and stays connected until I leave.
Something strange I noticed tonight; I went to my son's hockey game and, at the arena, I noticed it still showed as connected to my home network!?!?!!?
I started noticing this issue a few days ago, after flashing the 4.2.2 image from Google. My phone is rooted and is running the latest clockworkmod recovery but otherwise, still stock.
Something else I just noticed; my Nexus 7 doesn't have the same issue...
Anybody else having the same issue? Any hints on what's going on?
I also have this issue. But I had the problem before 4.2.2
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Got to work this morning... wouldn't connect to the network here because... It was still connected at home, 40km away. That's a powerful router!
Any clues as to what might be the cause?
What brand/type of wireless router are you using? What type of security?
We gotta be more than 2 with this problem... I've seen so many issues with wifi with this phone on other threads... Weird
Last night I went to my parents and again, my phone wouldn't connect to their home network so, its definitely not my router. So I made a backup of all my apps and returned to 4.2.1 and voila, wifi problems are fixed, for now...

Nexus Player Wifi

Hello, I own 2 nexus players, suddenly 2 days ago after working well, both started to develop slow wifi connections, streaming is nearly impossible, I downloaded a web browser for the device and opened a speed test page, the maximum speed registered is no more than 1.5 mbps while my internet connection is 10 mbps, all my other wireless devices get at least 9.8 mbps when tested the connection, strangely in the nexus playerthe speed increases a little more during the morning at the most to 3 mbps. I tried everything regarding the router, at first I used my dsl router wifi then I turned it of and started using my airport extreme, no changes in my nexus players, and getting full speed in my other devices, then I connected the nexus players to the airportextreme 5ghz wifi network, no change, I also tried to get the router closer to the nexus player, no change.
The last thing I tried is to share my mobile 4g connection to the nexus player which is about 25 mbps, I was standing next to the nexus player and the fastest speed it got was 1.5 mbps.
The problem occur in both nexus players, my other wireless devices get full wifi network speed, I dont know what else to do. Is this a common known issue?
How far away are they from the router? I have my router and NP #1 in the same room, and 5ghz signal is excellent. But the signal for NP #2 in the bedroom is lousy, so it uses the 2.4ghz band.
Maybe try using a wifi analyzer app to see what the best channels are for your router?
The router is at the most 15 feet from the nexus player. The strange thing is that both worked fine for about 3 months and suddenly at the same time they presented this problem. Could it maybe a firmware update? Mmmm When I shared my 4g connection I was three feet from the nexus player, I have no further ideas of what could be the problem. Neither google nor asus have responded my emails.

Exactly the same problem I have. It started today. I have even performed factory reset but without any help. It runs 6.0 software but until today everything works fine. My internet connection is 40/20 mb/s and all other devices works just fine.Anyone knows what can be?

most likely a driver incompatibility issue that came with the latest update.
I assume this to be the case since I used to have wifi problems with the Nexus player in the past, which used to disconnect from my wifi sometimes, especially with my 5GHz wifi, to which it never managed to stay connected more than a few days in a row. And all of those problems are gone after the new update. So I assume that the changes fixed things for some people (like me) and broke things for others (like you). My speed from the Nexus Player is blazing fast as well, it maxes out my connection when performing a speed test.

Thanks for reply.
If it is happend right after I have updated to 6.0 I will understand but three weeks later....
Somewhere I read that NP can be connected with wlan cabel using wlan adapter. If is it possible do you think it will solve the problem?

It should solve the problem. Also I've heard wlan cables come cheap these days on ebay.
Maybe a neighbor is now using a bad channel. See adjacent channel interference and co-channel interference.
Hi @mladost13, did you solved the slow wifi issue on Marshmallow?

Apparently my dsl modem blacklisted both nexus players, i don't know why, so the bandwidth for the two devices was limited. What i did was to reset the modem, problem solved temporarily, I already had to reseted it twice, as it blacklisted the np again. After doing that the speed in my nexus players is back to nearly 10 mbps again.

WiFi instability problems

I have a issue with WiFi. After I clean flashed lineage, my wifi connection became super unstable. It goes all the way up to the max connection speed then goes down to a point where it become slow, and the cycle keeps repeating. I checked my connection so I'm 100% sure it's not my internet speed. LTE speed is normal.
I suspect it's either a ROM bug or a modem img issue. Any ideas on how to solve this?
@edit: I had the exactly same problem with the previous custom ROM I was using.
I was having this kind of issue with every ROM i've tried. Just installed LineageOS and haven't got this bug since.
Perhaps some kind of incompatibility with the wireless AP? The crappy I've got here is a router and a repeater of different manufactures. So they keep stop talking between themselves and my network drops. Since lineage, however, i've been able to notice when it's the router problem.

The thing is, I wasn't having this problem with the stock ROM. It began when I flashed a custom one and now I have no idea of what is causing this...

WiFi unstable

Hi,
Is anyone having an instability issue with WiFi connection? This happens at home and work, but my phone at times disconnects from WiFi. It also struggles to connect to "saved" WiFi at times. For example, I came home today, and it didn't connect to my home network, so i turned wifi off and on, and kept checking it, and it eventually connected. I'm on stock (never rooted this phone) 8.1, but I've had this problem even before updating to 8.1. If you have any suggestions to fix this issue, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you,
I haven't experienced that behavior. Did you try resetting your network settings? If that doesn't work I would do a full factory reset but if you do it's important to select the fresh start option in setup instead of restoring from a Google backup. The backup restores some system and app data and can easily restore whatever is causing your problem. Sometimes data gets corrupted and your phone needs a fresh start.
i have seen this issue. It only happens on my 5ghz network. When i connect to my 2.4ghz network it is stable.

I'm having a similar issue where after the phone has slept for a while, the wifi basically doesn't respond anymore until I've turned the wifi fully off and back on. Signal shows fine even though no data flows. Happens both at home and my office. This wasn't an issue at all since owning the phone through all the betas. Only started happening with official Oreo release. Forgetting networks didn't work. I'm not willing to reset the whole device right now, too much to redo. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and has a solution.
I have one phone that sort of logs off. It says "tap to login" it is a google dialogue. It is on my home WiFi at 2.4GHZ. I will be doing a reset within a week to see if it fixes things...
I am doing my Hard Factory Reset now....wish us all luck.
8.1 Oreo broke my Essential, I want it back...
More to come...
Mine was doing that as well, after resetting my router no connection issues.
HARD Factory Reset
Well, it's done.
It has to be done and done as hard as possible. No reinstating ANY previous software settings of any kind.
I linked to my WiFi (non 5G) after reboot, and there has since been no issue.
This doesn't mean the problem has been solved. Days may pass before it surfaces again...
In the meantime, Telus, who provides me this service has stated that an in store test of device should show whether or not this is a warranty issue. Connection to an in-store WiFi should show quickly if it's a firmware issue, and a discussion can begin about device exchange.
That's all for now.
Good luck.
MF
No issues at home or work connected to an N router at home and an AC router system at work. Also no issues connecting to various public WiFi nodes.
I second elkay, same exact problem I'm experiencing. I may consider a hard reset on my phone soon, in hopes that it resolves the issue. Otherwise, I will continue running on my mobile network. Hope an official solution or fix comes soon.
Unfortunately, even a hard reset didn't fix it for me. I did end up buying a new router a couple days ago which does seem to have fixed the issue in my home (was buying a new one due to wifi coverage in corners of the house anyway), but that obviously won't solve the issue at work. Not sure where the incompatibility is. FWIW, I went from a Netgear R7000 to an R7800. Both running DD-WRT with same configuration.
I had this issue with a new PH-1 that updated to 8.1. I was not able to connect to an 802.11n router with cloaked SSID without difficulty, when saved, amidst several other issues, that I attributed to the 8.1 update. I downgraded to 7.1.1 and the wifi issue is resolved.
I just got an Essential Phone during the prime day deals and was experiencing the same issues. Download at 20mb/s for a couple of seconds then tank to 0.2mb/s.
Has anyone tried the latest Android P beta 3? It seems to have fixed my wifi throttling.
My phone was doing OK until a recent update. Now my phone disconnects and reconnects WiFi like crazy. Sometimes a dozen times in a few minutes. This is driving me crazy.
If you do not have Pie on your device load it.
I had serious WiFi connection problems on the last Oreo update but when I got the Pie update they disappeared and the phone has been fine since.
I'm on Pie and I still have this problem where the wifi will drop randomly every minute or two, but sometimes it's fine.
That's bizarre.... I had the one horrible Oreo update (as did a lot of others reporting in here) but since Pie it's been ok. I have both 2.4 and 5Ghz here but usually run on 2.4 as my router is in the next room and 5Ghz doesn't get through the walls nearly as well.
