Help with fixing Wi-Fi - Nexus S General

I have reached my wit's end trying to resolve my problems, so I'm posting here for ideas on fixing this, any input is appreciated!
When this started I was on stock, rooted, ICS 4.0.3 and had been for months. My wife has a nexus s with the same config and hers works fine.
Last week, my daughters sidekick 4G stopped having wi-fi internet connectivity. I turned her wi-fi off, then back on and it was fine and has been ever since. Later that night, my nexus did the same thing, the same procedure resolved it. Ever since then, my wi-fi will only work for 1-5 minutes after turning the wi-fi on. This is the only thing I can think of that changed that could have caused this. This was the first night we connected her sidekick to wi-fi.
The wifi symbol is up there, it'll be blue for up to half an hour, but won't have internet connectivity for long. One thing I noticed pretty quickly was that even though the grey wi-fi symbol is there, I can't access the router settings at 192.168.1.1 from the phone. I thought the grey wifi symbol still indicated I was connected to the router still, but it's not working. Each time this happens, I can turn wi-fi off, back on immediately and it'll work for 1-5 minutes. It appears that the more I constantly use it after turning it back on, it seems to maintain connectivity longer.
Last weekend, just after these issues started, I visited my sister and my phone operated on her wi-fi all weekend just fine.
When I came back home, my problems started immediately.
Here's what I've tried in pretty much the order I tried them:
I started by uninstalling avast, facebook, and autostarts
selected "Forget network" in access points screen and reconnected
Factory reset
Wipe dalvik cache & fix permissions
see if it worked without sim card in (it didn't)
flash GB broadcom driver
Switched router channel from 6 to 1
flash stock 2.3.6 (wi-fi problems still present)
flash OTA ICS (still had problems)
flash stock 2.3.6
flash OTA ICS
re-root
Flash PixelROM 1.60 LiteTouch
factory reset router (No wifi problems on using open network and default SSID for 30 minutes!)
resetup WPA Personal security and rename SSID same as before
Worked for another 15 minutes or so after this
flashed stock 2.3.6
flashed OTA ICS
re-rooted
Restored nandroid backup - quit working after this step
Factory reset router - worked for about 15 minutes, I decided I was ok so I setup security and SSID as before, then it quit working again
flashed PixelRom 1.60 LiteTouch
flashed stock 2.3.6
Flashed OTA ICS - THIS time I did not restore my google backups from the cloud, fearing that this was somehow restoring something that was causing me problems. It did not help.
Changed SSID on my router and reconnected phone
I have spent countless hours trying to fix this. I don't believe it's the hardware because the router factory reset seems to help quite a bit, works fine on unencrypted default router settings, and it worked on my sister's wi-fi.
I have nmap and wireshark and have a basic working knowledge of them. I have adb setup and usable on my computer. I also have dd-wrt installed on my router and have for years. Is there any kind of IP or hardware logging I could perform with these tools to help figure out what's going on??? ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!!

Well i'm no expert with any of this, but it sounds more like a router issue.. If both your sidekick and nexus have the same characteristics of failing wifi, it cant be the devices..
If you've already reset your router and it does the same exact thing, maybe it is something wrong with the router itself. You said it connected fine at your sisters house, so it cant be any hardware within the phone.. The only thing I could think of is maybe try a different router in your house to see if it works? If that helps get rid of the connectivity issue, then you can just get a new router and be happy with the wifis

I don't think a *hardware* problem with the router would only affect 1 device connecting to it wirelessly. I would think that kind of issue would affect all devices on the network.
Which makes me wonder if there's a setting on the router that may be causing it somehow, or some combination of packets might somehow cause the router to block my phone.
But again, I'm open to ideas here and I appreciate your input. I think getting another router will be my next step if I don't hear anything better by the time I get my next paycheck.

Ohh, I thought you had said that both the sidekick and nexus were having problems connecting. My bad.
But yeah have you changed any settings on it lately? Or messed with anything related to the router? Some setting may be kicking your device off after 5 mins, maybe some frequency setting or something dumb like that, I have no clue.
I know how it feels to have funky wifi, so I was only trying to help. good luck

Have you removed DD-WRT from your Wireless Router and back to stock OS? I had a Linksys router with DD-WRT and after about 3 years it started working so weird it became useless with any device. Had to buy a new one.
BTW, are other devices connecting fine to this router?
As swamp goblin stated, I would try with a new router.

It sounds like an issue on your router (or AP) with mixed client settings. I have had this issue with an old Netgear AP.
Try forcing "WPA2 with AES only" if all clients support it, otherwise force "WPA with TKIP only". If you have mixed B/G/N devices, force the fastest mode that all devices support. I use "G only".
Then remove and re-add the router on all your devices.
Also check for router firmware updates, and if you use DD-WRT firmware, find the Wiki page for your model and revision and use the suggested build there. The DD-WRT database they have is a mess and should not be used!

I haven't changed any settings, until this problem began, which makes this even more maddening. I appreciate your input regardless

I haven't removed it. I thought I had a model that couldn't go back to stock, but I WILL be looking into this. The other devices connecting fine are Sidekick 4G, Wife's Nexus S, Acer Aspire one, HP tx2000 laptop, and my wife's HP laptop. I also have my satellite receiver connected via ethernet.

THIS FIXED IT! I tried it first since it was the simplest solution and I've been 4 days with no loss of connectivity since I changed it to AES only, which all my clients do support! Thanks so much!

Not sure why cannot get connected to wifi since day 1

Hi Friends,
Hope you could help. I have a X1 and I been trying to get it connected to my DIR-655 thru wifi with no avail. Surprisingly, I have 2 wifi network at home and it could get connected to the other one. I am sure it is not a router issue as my iPhone could connect to it using same login settings. Both my wifi routers are on WPA2. This is really puzzling me.
Cheers and thanks,
I have trouble with WPA2 security as well. WEP works just fine, though.

But the thing is it is working with WPA2 with my other router. Very strange.
I have the same issue. Can't connect to my wi-fi router at home, though have no trouble to access others. Or better to say I get connected, but internet is working either too slow and too short, or not working at all.
I did have this issue when I gott my X1,
after a few days I unplugged the router for 2 mins and plugged back in, then waited until it started up and tried to connnect and it worked.
dont know why it worked it just did so maybe it will help you?
Have you tried logging on to your router, and allowing your X1's IP address.
Thats what i had to do on my netgear.
well, I've even arranged a static ip for the mac-adress of my x1, enabled DMZ for that ip, but still doesn't help.
I've pulled the plug of the router out many times so far, doesn't seem to help.
routers are basically rather small computers
their firmware have bugs
which is why the manufactures
put out firmware updates to fix those
newer wifi devices like phone of often give issues
with older routers with older firmware
updating firmware is pretty easy and can be downloaded from the manufactures site
yesterday I tried again and I don't why, but it is working now still a bit slow and some programs don't connect (QIP, SPb Online tv etc), but at least browsing works.
p.s. forgot about router firmware, gonna try it tomorrow.

X10 & Netgear DG834v5 Wifi Connection Problems - Solution

Hello all,
I love my X10, but the frustration with getting it to connect to my Netgear DG834 router was getting to me, so I dedicated an afternoon to working out a solution and I've found one that works for me, so I hope it'll work for you too.
Summary of problem
--------------------
The phone will connect to the Router once, and once only. Any attempt to re-connect to the wifi will result in the phone disconnecting, scanning again, then discinnecting until the user gives up. Nothing will cause the phone to reconnect (telling it to forget the connection for example). The only surefire way to reconnect is to reboot the router each time - not ideal.
Manually adding a Static IP also doesn't work - which is weird as that is how I've solved it, see below.
Scale of problem
----------------
The problem seems to be with the router and not necessarily the phone as it appears to be on a wide range of phones (Hero, Droid, Touch HD etc.). Seeing at the DG834 is the most popular router in the world, and Android is growing all the time, there are a large number of people affected.
However Iphone and Symbian phones appear to be unaffected.
Reason for the problem
-----------------------
Currently unknown, but appears to be something to do with the handshaking procedure when a device asks the router for an address (DHCP) - though as to what I don't know.
Solution
--------
1) Download an app called WiFiStatic from the App Market. WiFiStatic takes each DHCP assigned IP address and stores it in a small database to be re-applied whenever you are back in range of the same Router again. It is not an ideal solution as you may have to re-scan and re-assign if you visit a busy hotspot, but this is a two press function, so it's not that onerous.
2) Turn off your Router. Make sure the WiFi on your phone is off too.
3) With the router off, clear your Remembered WiFi connections (or at the very least the Netgear connection). Once that's done, turn the Router on again and wait until it is full back up again.
4) When the Router is fully operational again, turn on your wifi on the phone and let is scan for and connect to the Netgear Router. You may need to tell it to connect from the Wireless Settings menu on the phone.
5) The phone should now connect to the Router successfully. If it doesn't, repeat the above procedure.
6) With the phone connected to the router, fire up WiFiStatic. Check Auto Switch and Show Visual Prompt if they are not already selected, then Tap Add configuration at the bottom of the screen.
7) The IP address and other settings assigned by your router should be displayed at the top of the screen, at the bottom should be the name of your router and its MAC address. If not then tap Menu > Generate to populate the form.
8)Tap Menu > Done when everything is ok.
That's it. Now when you move into range of your Netgear, you should get connected, though it does take a bit longer than normal (the Router still wants to assign an address first before accepting the static IP). You can speed this up by changing the Device table on the router to always keep the Phone's static IP open.
This shouldn't work as all my other attempts with Static IP failed, but I've had five days now of instant connection to WiFi at home, so something has been freed up.
i can not tell you how seeing this post was like finding bin ladin in the white house. Prob would have found him twice trying to solve this WIFI problem. And the strange thing is this is the 1st phone i have had that there are so few posts about it...is everyone on that icrack? scary. cheers to you...
Thank you for posting this.
I tried this with my and it seems it doesn't make a difference for me. I still can only connect once to the router and for me to connect again i have to restart the router again. Am i missing something?
Problem is when I connect for the first time at home it works then when i leave to the office i use the wifi there and never have any problems there but when i get back home it doesn't work. Do you guys switch the wifi off manually when you are not using it?
one thing that is almost always overlooked is updating the router's firmware. this usually solves a number of issues. I dont know about netgear but it's worth a try to update

That was one of the first thing i tried....it seems i have the latest firmware.
Is this an issue for a lot of people then? Ive one of these routers and never had an issue connecting any phones to it. Had 3 nokias and 3 different android phones, currently on the x10, and they all connected fine everytime.
i have some troubles in x10i wifi connection and holp someone helps me~
------------------------------
im chinese, my x10i have had the lastest firmware but the phone cant connect the AP which set the channel is "13". but i used it long before and suddy just one day i find it dosnt work~ it cant scan(and find) the AP anymore !
then i have tried and config the router in another wifi channel(just like 1,8,11..) and the phone can scan and refind the AP.
i have tried to reload the phone's default setting, but it dont work(in channel 13)ToT
---------------------------
someone tell me why? and someone give me some suggest?
in china , lots of router's wifi channel are using "13" by default(factory setting);so, if my x10i cant works in that channel means i couldnt find the "opend APs" which in the public place(like KFC~~)
THX to help~

Thank you! I have spent three days trying to get my phone to re-connect to a DG834v5.
Your solution has worked! I had gone as far as reserving an IP address on the router and linked it to the MAC of the phone... no dice. The phone would connect once and then never again until the router was reset. Really irritating because I have two PPPoe connections running through the router with a routing table that has to be re-loaded via telnet every time the router is reset. I was considering a new phone or a new router.
HI,
I have near the same problem.
But I found out that when I remove on the access point the hidden function ( SID ) then it works perfect.
so that is a bug in the ROM of the X10, I have the R2b026.
At the moment everone can see my Access Point but I can live with that solution.
Worked for me! Many many thanks this had been infuriating me...
Same problem here - never had an issue with any other router, so I blame Netgear...
Let's just hope this works - it's been driving me crazy for the past 5 days...
Neh, hasn't worked for me....
Stupid freakin' Netgear...
works on the HD2 aswell. Thanks alot!
Not just Netgear, maybe Android

I am having the same issue on my HD2 Android 2.3.4, connecting to a D-Link DIR-635. If I use Static IP, everything is fine...
WORKS! I can't believe it, finally i can disconnect and connect without having to reset my router everytime. BIG thanks man!
alright, it worked fine for the first 5-6 hours. then it went back to not connecting without rebooting the router. this problem happens only with my home router, at work i can connect fine, as well as in other places.
any thoughts or solutions? i mean it did work in the beginning, then why did it stop? shall i change my router?
P.S.: i noticed that every time i connect to my home router i get the same IP address and all the stats are the same.

wifi home network

im about to smash a phone.. i use my wireless at home to connect to with my phone to not use my data up. all of a sudden my wifi will shut off as soon as i start to download something in the Market. The only thing i know that was changed was a windows update a few days back so i uninstalled the KB fixes and rebooted. reset my dsl modem to factory defaults. using my same ssid and psk, read forums all over for tips but nothing has worked. havent factory reset the phone itself yet. seems its a problem with the atrix but I havent had the problem until like 2 days ago.
*i changed my router to WEP from WPA and Im able to stay connected so far.
Assuming you're using a wireless router and not using your windows computer as a pseudo hotspot, windows updates and settings on your computers shouldn't have any possible impact between your Atrix and router. Also, I can only imagine that the problem is on your phone, not anything else, since your wifi only shuts off when you go to the Market.
Weird that changing the encryption fixes it, but seriously, don't leave it set to WEP. It literally takes seconds to crack the password and very little technical know-how to do. I would factory reset your phone, should fix it.
Oh, and have you flashed any ROMs onto your phone? Some of them have (or at least had) issues with wifi for certain users. That could be your problem.

Is your router old? I have an old one, and I am having the same problem if I use anything other than WEP. Some people have said that a firmware update to their router helped. It didn't help me.
What type of WPA are you using?
i have the same problem at home, keep having the message on my phone network unreachable, after i wait few min then comes back to it. Very anoying
Atrix 4
1.83 gingerblur 3.1
-new DSL modem/router combo. Westell 7500
-i haven't rooted or flashed this phone yet.
-wpa-wpa2-tkip(and tried aes) with a wpa shared key at 3600 interval.
figured it was being booted by the firewall but i didnt see anything in the log. turned the firewall off. even added the phones mac address in Wireless > MAC Filtering > Primary SSID so "Only the stations listed in the table will be Allowed access. All others will be blocked". That didnt work either.
i had a problem a while back with the phone somehow interfering with my router. it would actually cause me to lose my internet connection while i was using wifi on the phone. i fixed that problem (forgot what i did) it might would have helped to remember when this new problem occurred.

I would highly suggest not using WEP for security reasons, it is very easy to crack the passwords, my friend has cracked them in less than 5 min and he isn't even that computer smart (no offense to him, but its just clicking through menus).
They can even spoof MAC filtering, so dont think that will save you. If you must use WEP I would suggest monitoring your traffic and connections.
I was really surprised at how fast the password could be cracked especially with modern programs.

yea. i would prefer to figure out why it stops working with wpa, but i have about gave up after trying everything but a phone factory reset, which would fix the problem possibly, but then i still wouldnt know what was the main cause.
its also working with WPA-WPA Mixed with Data Encryption on TKIP+AES

Wifi won't stay connected (not D-Link problem)

My phone has problems staying connected to wifi. It's often disconnected and has to reconnect when I wake my phone up (even though it's set to not turn off during sleep) and it'll disconnect and reconnect sometimes even when the phone is awake. I've read about people having problems with D-Link routers, but none of my routers are D-Link. The problem seems to have improved a lot after I flashed my modem to the MDL modem, but it still comes up. Does anyone have any solutions or would anyone know what could be causing this? I'm currently running the Wicked rom but I had this problem even when my phone was completely stock. Has anyone had this problem go away after switching to an AOSP-based rom?

I still have this problem, it disconnects and reconnects minutes later. I am on stock, stock kernel and rooted. could it be a root problem?
It can't be a root problem because I had this problem even when the phone was completely stock. I'm wondering if it's a TW problem, which is why I asked if anyone still had this problem after switching to AOSP (the Wicked rom I'm running now is TW).
If it were me, I would try a different modem, but thats just me.
Is there a thread with the available modems?

Just because it isn't a DLINK wireless ap doesn't mean you won't issues. All the consumer-grade wireless routers/ap's share a narrow range of chipsets made by broadcom, atheros, etc.. So, the brand has nothing to do with it.
I would suggest getting a logcat if you can or try another wireless ap somewhere else. I've got a TPLINK wireless router with OpenWRT flashed, runs flawless.

I never said that only D-Link routers have problems. There's a well-known issue with D-Link routers so I wanted to state up front that I don't have any D-Link routers in case anyone wanted to suggest that it could be the cause.

He said the option was only available while originally connecting and setting up the connection for the first time. Maybe you can try to delete the wifi connection all together and then let it re-detect and go through the set up process again...if that is an option.
My phone was doing this on my friends router but not on my home router. He searched google & found something stating that the S4 dont like routers with AES encryption for the security. He changed his router security to TKIP+AES encryption & the next time I was there wi-fi stayed connected with no constant reconnect problems. Buuuut, my home router security is just AES & I have no issues connecting to it, yet at least. Dont know if this will help anybody else out but its worth a shot to play with your routers security settings.
I thought I had an issue with my I337 S4 do the same thing.turns out my phone was just bouncing around trying to connect to 6 other open WiFi signals I've used
So just to give an update, I tried installing another router in my house as an access point and the phone has no problems staying connected to it, so there's definitely something that the phone doesn't like about the other routers that I'm running. I'm reluctant to say that there's anything "wrong" with my old routers because no other device had a problem staying connected, but if anyone else experiences the same problem, changing routers/APs could work. Fwiw, my old routers had Broadcom chipsets while the new one has an Atheros chipset. I'm going to try updating the firmware for the old routers to see if it helps (I run DD-WRT and Tomato on all of my routers).

I'm having the same constant-disconnect issue as well and searching for solution.
I'm rooted, on stock rom and cant find any "key management" option at initial connect. Issue was happening when unrooted as well.
No issues when connected to router at work, but have connected two other, albeit older android devices to home router without issues.

Thanks, forgot to mention the router is already set to TKIP+AES.
However, upon confirming this morning, it is set to auto WAP/WAP2. Will try WAP2-only tonight, unless this won't make a diff?

WPA/WPA2 decreases the bandwidth of the router. WPA2 will support a full 300Mbps link state. So yea, they are different, but it may not fix it.
I have a Cisco EA6500, so I'm connected to the AC 5Ghz band, and it works flawlessly. WPA2 Personal
My bad on typing WAP instead of WPA.
Doesn't sound like fully opening up the bandwidth will fix it.
Has something to do with how the phone manages the encryption keys?

Wifi issue related to root?

Hi Folks,
I have been postponing this post but nothing ive seemed to do has worked. I THINK after i rooted my issues started. I am unable to browse the net or anything when connected to my wifi. I have reset the router, forgotten and rejoined the network with no avail. All my other devices do not have this issue. Im not really sure what else to say so maybe some of you gurus could pick my brain. Though this is a wifi only issue and on this network. When connected to other networks im fine. My setup is as follows. I have a hard line going from the router the ISP provided in the other end of the house to the router in my room. Like i said my phone is the only device that has issues on this network.
thanks in advance.

That's a pretty strange issue, not sure there is going to be much help... I've had some strange, random issues with my S5. I had issues with wireless, xposed and some other apps after rooting the first time. I got tired of it and used Odin to reflash the stock firmware, then performed a factory reset and rooted afterwords. I haven't had any problems at all after doing this... In all honesty, that's the route I would go if I were you. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, hope you get sorted out

Just wanted to agree with BadKarma on this. I've not had your exact issue, but I have had some similar stuff after rooting originally. I used Odin to go back to stock and rooted again and have been no issues since. Hope it works out. . .

well i used odin and got back but it turns out it seems to be the router? im on stock with no root and still cant access the net or anything else when im connected to the router. any thoughts on this?
Can you reset the settings in the router via your pc?
Try connecting standing right next to the router. I had this issue with my Note 2 and it ended up being a physical issue with the wireless chip or antennas. It's actually the reason I'm not on a S5.
Not that u want to hear this, but I had to replace my router for the same reason. My router would only pick up certain devices, had to do with hardware and firewall security settings.

First and foremost you have to isolate the issue to either ur phone or the router. In order to do that its very simple.... can you connect to wifi outside of your house like starbucks or friends wfii? If the answer is yes than the issue lies solely with your router. Let me know what you find out and I can help guide you <---- systems administrator Also please provide the make and model of your router as well as your modem and your ISP.
EDIT: I just read the line where you talk about having another router in your room. I can already tell you this is probably NOT an issue with your phone but rather your setup. The secondary router must be setup as a repeater or bridge OR on a different subnet. This gets very tricky for average home user and I do not recommend you tackle it on your own. Also your main router has to be able to play nice with the secondary and if it's one provided by your ISP it's probably a POS. Also your phone is probably not the only device having issues with this setup.... its the only one you are noticing having issues. Android OS is very sensitive to weird wifi setups and anything out of the norm will set it off. It's actually a great tool in diagnosing wifi issues.

Hi there thanks for the reply. Yes i can connect to any other router without issue. The router is my Router Info:
Name N300 Wireless Router
Model F9K1002v5 (01B)
Firmware 5.00.15(Nov 1 2013)
Serial No. 12349GC2508237
Boot Loader 0.12
I use my tablet and other pcs within this wifi. It is under a different subnet as well. (i think so been a while since ive done any networking) The main router that comes in has the standard IP 192.168.1.1 and the IP for my router in my room (basically set up like this since my room is quite far and gets bad signal from the main router, Cable in -> Main Router -> Hardwire hooked into a port -> ethernet run to my room -> Connected to a port on the wireless router) 192.168.2.1. My ISP is Optimumn Online. My wifi was working fine until about 10 mins ago. seems to happen so often. I did change the security a while back to TKIP + AES on the router and made sure it was the same on the phone and it was working fine for days until like i said about 10 mins ago.

This leads me to think that perhaps the router (however old or new) may have a setting, or an actual limit, on how many devices connect to it.
If not that, perhaps if you rooted, and tried removing bloat, you may have been a bit overzealous and removed something related to WiFi and are now having this issue as a result.
I have only removed the list of apps and bloat that have been posted on Ricks Rom HERE. The ONLY problem I have seen since removing this list, was that I can no longer access PhotoVault correctly. Gives me an error saying that it has no connection to the database, but my 4G is working fine at the time as I was downloading via steam and streaming a movie, and playing a PC game at the same time...

You have the right setup with a different subnet. It's possible the main router is assigning the same IP address that your router has to another device. It would be best if you picked up another router that has repeater capabilities and set it up in repeater mode. Also reserve an IP address for your router from the main router to avoid IP conflicts.
Another possibility is simply the wifi on your router is deteriorating and it's time for a replacement. I recommend the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 if you don't mind spending the $$$. If your on a bit of a budget the Netgear N900 (WNDR4500v2) is the next best thing that supports repeater mode.
well its been still working intermediary. I have to unplug the router and plug it back in then i can browse the net on my phone. idk if id like to lay out that kind of money for a new router. there has to be something else thats causing it. i set the router to reboot everyday, also my phone. its odd though. sometimes it works sometimes it dosent.
