Mad Catz CTRLR - new one not re-syncing after it sleeps - M.O.J.O. General

Hey all. Hoping someone has a clue with this.
I bought a brand new CTRLR from Amazon to accompany my existing stock CTRLR, and decided to sync it up and use it for a while to give the stock one a break.
It's largely OK but I notice that if the controller sleeps, say, when watching a film, if I then press the HOME button to re-sync it, it doesn't work. Usually on the stock pad you would just hit the HOME button and the pad would resync and you could use it as normal. This doesn't happen with the new CTRLR, and I have to hold in the button as if I've just put the console on. Sometimes that doesn't work properly either and I have to switch to mouse mode and swipe the app away and start again. It's a bit of a pain.
Any ideas? Thanks all.

I can tell I'm really inspiring you guys to a response!
Anyway, I'm hopeful I've fixed it. At first I tried leaving the dongle in from the stock pad, even though as a retail boxed CTRLR it shouldn't need it, but that seemed to fix one thing and break others. However, I did a firmware upgrade last night and this seems to have worked.
I'm aware there's a bug open for this on KODI at the moment that some have reported. Some people seem to have the same issue. My concern with this was that it seemed to affect other apps, not just KODO. For example, if I left the pad untouched while Retroarch was running and let it go to sleep, I could not wake it. I *think* this may be resolved after the firmware upgrade but I have more testing to do.

At risk of talking to myself, but if it possibly helps anyone it does indeed seem to be fine now. Controller wakes properly after firmware upgrade on all apps apart from Retroarch. As such I can only assume there is an issue with Retroarch. Looking through their forum it does seem to suggest some sort of issue with their Android controller settings, so hopefully that will get spotted and fixed.

Major Screen Fault - Can't run any apps

There is a serious fault with my tablet. Whenever I start any application the screen flickers and then goes blank as if it is off. If I turn off the screen and turn it on again it will show for a second, flicker and then turn off again. It does this repeatedly often without ever recovering and the only solution is to reboot the device or hit the back button to exit the app.
Occasionally, if I turn the screen on and off many times the tablet will recover with the application in a started state, however almost any action can trigger the flickering and screen turning off again at random. I have installed the latest updates to both the tablet and the keyboard dock. The problem persists. The problem occurs whether the tablet is docked or not. The tablet works fine if I stay in the OS, i.e. on the home screens and settings menus etc. The problem only occurs on starting any app such as email or the web browser.
Examples :
Calendar works fine, but not the settings screen
Music works fine
MyNet works fine
Polaris Office works fine
Kindle will run but not open books
Google maps works fine
Browser (built-in and dolphin) will not work
Email will not work
Market will not work
Dropbox will not work
Contacts will not work
NB : when I say these apps "don't work" they do actually run fine they just cause the screen to crash more or less instantly.
This feels like a hardware fault.
Has anyone else experienced this ?
ASUS Tech Support
ASUS tech support say it's faulty and to return it for a replacement.
I have the same BSOD. I highly suspect this latest "upgrade" to 3.1 is responsible. Running fine for a month, then 3.1 "upgrade" comes, then a day later screen starts flickering, then most apps are either dark/flickering or simply black.
The home screen works fine (for a while), so clearly some sort of software issue is the culprit. Never rooted.
I have this issue too, though I also had it on 3.0.1. I will RMA, I also have an unresponsive area on the touchscreen. What's the beggining of the serial no of your faulty TFs? Mine is B4 (April 2011), and so far, people with B5s (May) seem to have no hardware issues (fingers crossed).

I'm pretty sure it's hardware and so, it seems are ASUS.
It happened on mine from the moment I took it out of the box both before and after the firmware upgrade so it's not a 3.1 issue.

screen blanking
i'm having the same issue, B4 serial number also.
there are times when it seems to be working fine, and i'm hopeful it's worked itself out (ha), but then it happens again.
was really hoping there would be some kind of fix or workaround, but alas i'm getting the impression the B4 series may be faulty. sucks. guess i'll have to turn it in to ASUS and get another. : (
is there a connection with battery level? at the moment the battery is low, but i'll pay more attention and see if it happens less when the battery is charged. not a solution by any means, but good to know if it will keep it from happening as much.
doesn't seem to make a difference whether i'm in the dock or plugged in.
when it happens i just push the Home button (when docked) and then lock and unlock, and i can get back to the homescreen at least. without the dock it seems pretty screwed, but sometimes i'll try and touch something quickly in the split second when it comes back on and goes off again. works sometimes, but not often.

Sorry to hear your having problems with the B4 serial number.
I just looked on the box and I have B4, also. But, never any of these problems.
Had mine 3 weeks today.
And the dock arrived yesterday...both have gotten the new updates. Everything was solid before and seems so after...since the updates.
Hopefully it's not the B4 series. But, sorry again to hear about these problems...how discouraging!
RMA
Just took my Transformer back to the store. It will take two weeks to get a replacement because they are out of stock
also
same issue with a B5 series (from France)
So, not limited to the B4 batch as previously suspected.
Cheers.

Update : Replacement Transformer
I got a brand new transformer this morning.
The place I bought my first one said it might take two weeks to get a replacement so I got a refund instead and bought another one from ebuyer yesterday.
It arrived this morning.
B5 serial number.
All working perfectly.
I think its hardware issues. Either a faulty component or cold solder joint.

Really trying my best to like this tablet

I'm writing here out of frustration that I've been having with the Acer Iconia.
So I got the tablet about like early last week when it went on sale at Target. The tablet of course came with 3.0.1 and I waited a few days for it to receive the 3.1 update but it always gave me the "your device is up to date" thing. Ok fine so I'll just install the update myself so I updated to the latest version (4.010.11) using the update.zip method. Yay so now I have 3.1!
But of course the problems aren't over.
Before and after the update I had problems with WiFi (unable to connect because of looping) and I'd usually be able to "fix" this problem by resetting my router and modem. But what about when I go to college or any outside public place? I won't be able to go to them and ask them to reset their damn router -___-.
And the other annoying problem: the mic. Yes I've searched about the mic problem and looked at every thread that was created about it. It has to do with the noise canceling, etc. But I can't really video chat when the mic has crappy quality. Ok so I decided to go back to Target and exchange it for a new Acer Iconia (which I did yesterday).
When I got it and opened it, it seemed to be packaged a bit differently than the older tablet and seemed a bit newer (in comparison to the old packaging). And as soon as I connected it to my WiFi, an update appears!!! Cool so as I'm setting up the tablet, 3.1 is downloading in the background. Once it's done and the Tablet resets, everything seems cool. I try out the front cam using the stock Camera app and there was a moment where the camera only showed some odd green screen (as if it was unable to connect to the camera) and in a few seconds everything was cool. I even tried the mic and it was much better. I took it out with my to my friend's place and was able to connect to his internet with no issues. And then I went home and connected to my WiFi and once again it did the looping issue . I tried ignoring it and just reset my router (I tried assuming that it was my router's problem since my computer also has issues sometimes when it comes to reconnecting to WiFi after it turns on from sleep mode).
So then I go to sleep and wake up this morning. I decide to check for an update on my tablet for lulz and to my surprise there was another update (4.010.13)! Go through the update process with the power plugged in, android gear thingy keeps going, and the bar looked like it stopped moving 95% of the way and the tablet reset. So then it turns on and it says that all apk have been loaded but I don't see the "update successful" msg. But then I check "about tablet" and it appeared that it had updated successfully. *whew*
But of course another problem appears. Remember how the front camera had a slight moment? Well I tried using the front camera and it gave me that same green flickering screen and wouldn't show. Once again it appeared to have a problem connecting to the actual hardware camera. I tried force closing the camera app and opening it again but it didn't fix anything. Tried closing and opening the tablet but it didn't fix the problem. Tried pressing the reset button but that didn't fix it. And of course I decided to reset the whole thing but that didn't fix it! And I tried using the front cam with the Google Talk app and it still didn't work (still gave me the green flickering screen).
BLAH! Should I exchange the tablet for another Acer Iconia or just give up on it and get a different one? I honestly like the build of the tablet and all the features it offers (like the ports) but those issues are just stopping me from fully enjoying the tablet and being able to use it for the purposes I got it (video chatting, WiFi, etc.)
EDIT: Here's a video of the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuAhgWQgCq0&feature=channel_video_title (Ignore the "4.010.13" in the title. I didn't mean to say that all 4.010.13 tablets will have this problem; only meant that my tablet was on 4.010.13)
I'm on my second iconia and absolutely love it. The first was almost perfect, but battery wouldn't charge beyond 88%.
I've tested out every possible thing about it, and everything is completely solid.
To exchange it for another iconia or something else is entirely up to you. I'm just telling you that what you describe I don't experience at all. My wifi connects instantly to whatever signal I tell it to connect to. My cameras also work perfectly. Mic also perfectly and makes me go through to the other side just fine. In fact, I've been using the iconia to have conferences with people I know to discuss about our plan to take over the world.
The point is there will always be a black sheep in the flock. Even the ipad 2, apple's star product and the most sort after tablet right now, is getting reports of problems left and right. The most common seems to be light bleeds and face time freezing.
Go for another tablet if you feel like it. Your choice. I'm just telling you there's such a thing as a perfect iconia, and I have it.

I understand and respect your good intentions. I'll think about it through out the day and I might exchange it for another Iconia. If another problem arises then I'll just check out another tablet.
Also I added a video of the problem at the bottom of the original post up there ^^^
The wifi issue was an atrocity that affect(s) a lot of people. Mine did it one time right after the 3.1 update, I did a fix on the tablet and it never has done it again, and since the latest update hopefully won't.
It does appear to me that something is wrong with your camera however. Mine has never done that and it does not appear to be a software issue. I think there's something physically wrong with the front facing camera - loose connection or something.
eh maybe the stockboys took their liberties with stock the shelf with iconia. Maybe just have the manager open one up with you and check those eature out before you leave the store. Mine has been great.
All the honeycomb tablets have their issues and run the same hardware so your not missing out leaving this tablet or keeping it. only thing is atleast the xoom gets updates fast(if your subcribing to verizon but the wifi version is not that far behind anywhos)
I keep hearing people complain about the mic, luckily that isn't an issue for me though as I don't use my tablet for video or audio chat anyways And surprisingly I haven't had the WIFI issue either, it has worked like a peach all the way from the start. The only issue I've had with my tablet has been the fact that it took Acer forever to release EMEA_GEN3 firmware update, nothing else so far.
Maybe I've just been lucky?
After watching your video, i can say is a hardware fault. Exchange again the tablet and check on the store that everything works. Mine works wonderful and I love this tablet.
I have two Iconia tablets and confirmed that both cameras in each tablet work in 4.010.11 and 4.010.13.
I've also not had an issue with wifi. If this is an ongoing issue, it might be an incompatibility with your router.
For the camera, most likely hardware defect, mine doesnt have that problem. For the wifi, however the update supposedly fixed it, but if you have the same problem as I do, root your device (its easy!) And download an app like es file explorer and go into the settings and enable both root settings. Turn off wifi, and in es file explorer delete both files in /data/miscellaneous/dhcp. Sounds like a pain but it really only takes thirty seconds and fixes it for a few days. As for replace versus a different unit, I recommend getting another iconia. I compaired all of the tablets hheavily, and all of them have their issues. The iconias issues, however, are by far the easiest to deal with
If this post was helpful, give thanks
I to have had not one issue with my tab. Well other then a few things I screws up.that camera issue looks like bad hardware or the cable from the can to system board is loose.I did drop my tab and found the connectors inside were not secure for video.I took mine apart. Take yours back since you just got it.tell them to get you one from a different box or take it back to a diffrent target store.
I once bought a awesome TV from Walmart I returned 4 of them was going to get a fifteenth brand but decided one more try.I went across bridge into Jeff Indiana walmart exchanged it. And never one sec trouble was a bad batch at the walmart 3 miles from my home.
Sorry for such a long story in blonde giggles
Just like every other product in life, sometimes we get lemons - not just lemons, rotten lemons.
Your A500 may be an example of a rotten lemon. No way to even turn it into lemonade.
You said you've done a factory reset and you're on the newest build of software, there's basically nowhere else to turn and nothing else to do. As a customer, you've done your part. I would say, do an exchange and as I think I glimpsed someone else mentioning, open it up and use it at the store. Check for hardware faults. Mind you, slow GPS locking and Wifi issues may not necessarily indicate a fault, but that camera issue definitely does.
That is of course, IF you want another A500 anyway. At this point, no one here could blame you if you wanted to try on something else. In your place, I probably would. Once bitten, twice shy. I give every brand 2 chances when it comes to a product. If I end up getting 2 duds (and I've only had this happen ONCE) that's where I draw the line and I gladly move on to something else.
Good Luck and whatever you decide to do, hope to hear from you again with your results...either loving on a new tablet, or loving on a working A500.
WOW Sorry to hear you have had so many issues. I bought my wife one for reading and web surfing for her birthday and she and my daughter got me one for my birthday. My kid has a Galaxy and she had some of the issues you have had with the acer. Granted she works at best buy and they had some issues with that lot she had bought hers from. I have khad the wifi issue at first and went to the acer web site and installed the fix from them before i had rooted mine. At first i had to do the reset thingy with a small paper clip. But have not had any other issues than that. I would do the return thing at a diffrent store maybe you got into a bad lot. I hope it changes for you.
Do a double reset (paperclip in the reset hole with power on) and power cycle. Then restore the factory settings under the security menu, which will also wipe all your settings and data. This solved all the probs my son was having in his A500.

.. & I'm just not sure if i should return it or if these issues are pretty much whats expected.
I have not upgraded to ICS from HC
Problems so far:
1. Re-booted twice on first day i had it. I'd been using it all day (installing/using apps etc) - I used it all day 2 days after that w/out issue.
2. Re-booted last night? Not sure exactly but there were no apps suspended in the bg from the night before (~8 hours before) - i had quite a few in the bg
3. 2 out of 3 times so far if i "shut down" *the power button will not power it back on* - i have to plug it into the wall/power for it to turn back on
They aren't the worst issues..yet? I don't know.. I'm pretty happy with HC at the moment & will probly avoid ICS upgrade for a bit.
Stick with it?
#3 is not supposed to happen.
#1 and #2, it depends on exactly which version of the Honeycomb firmwares you are running. Honeycomb 3.2.1 didn't do those for me, but the versions pre-3.2.1 had occasional incidents.
It's 3.2.1
We can assume that you know that you have to hold the button down for three seconds to power it on when it's completely off. Therefore, I would see about swapping it because #3 sounds like a major problem.

Yeah i just shut it down again and it would not come on until plugging into the wall. Problem seems pretty consistent. Ugh i really don't want to have to go through this.
QUESTION: how can i pretty much wipe this device of the apps/personal info i've entered into it before sending it back?
QUESTION: Try ICS then if i'm gonna ship it back anyways?
To wipe the device, you run "Factory Reset Data" in the Settings.
Sure, might as well try out ICS if you're curious.
Sometimes when mine gets a random reboot/shutdown I have to hold the power button down for about 10 seconds to turn it on. Try this if you haven't already.
yeah the power button issue may be it not being totally shut off, so when you hold power you are shutting it down instead of starting it. happened to me a few times so figured it was worth a mention.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Although it's a bit inconsistent on whether or not i have to hold it down for 3 seconds or 10+ one way or another (after a struggle) it does appear to consistently come up. Emphasis on struggle though.
Have you tried any custom roms yet? I personally seem to have a more stable tablet when using a custom rom due to the various tweaks and fixes.

This thing decided to re-boot randomly again. So i decided to upgrade to ICS (4.0.3) - nearing last ditch efforts.
Problems came up right away:
1. Browser having strange connectivity issues? I have Wifi Analyzer and watching the scrolling graph i don't see any dropping or problems with the connection itself. So i'm not sure what the situation is but sometimes it just doesn't want to load pages - I can't fully say if Dolphin has the same problems or not.
2. Screen tearing. Fairly frequently there's a diagonal tear occurring across the screen, when switching around in/out of apps.
3. The shutdown issue. This problem is at best the same, if not worse. So in hopes of shrugging off the other issues i did a "shut down" and i seriously battled with the power button and never got it to come back up w/out plugging into into the wall.
- What's interesting is how it always comes up RIGHT AWAY once it's plugged into the wall. I tried and tried and tried again with holding the power button 3-10-20-30+ seconds random intervals nothing worked. Hard to express the amount of times & different timings i tried.
So i'm gonna give it a whirl like this for a while and see.. i might end up doing a factory reset .. if problems persist after that it's going back to newegg
Edit: i just tried to play a youtube video and it stopped trying to cache 1/4th through it.. then i pulled up Aljazeea live and it's echoing/choking/stalling .. these problems didn't exist prior. Also, i noticed another streaming (scanner radio) app not doing so well earlier too... heh

Do a factory reset already and test it without installing any apps. You need to find out whether the problem is with hardware or software.
There's a good chance that it's a hardware problem since you got it refurbished. Maybe it was broken already and Asus didn't completely fix it.
Do yourself a favor. Root it and install the latest CM9 build. I was having all kinds of reboot and sleep issues with the stock ROM, mainly the ICS one but a few issues with HC as well. CM9 has been rock solid for me so far.

CM9 might not suit him, so instead he should try out several roms until he finds one hes satisfied with
Telling him to install a specific rom is fine, but it doesnt really help him out.
That said, since you brought up "rock solid", Team EOS build 19 has been really rock solid for me. Currently 202h uptime and counting.
Wow i didn't think things could get much worse but they did.
I decided to do a factory reset because generally things hadn't improved. Initially after the reset things were "OK" ("better" @ 1st but short lived)
Then a while later..
It appears the connectivity of the wireless has completely died. It will connect to wireless fine but is incapable of anything beyond that. No web pages, no connectivity/data transfer in any apps.
I did another factory reset, installed nothing, imported nothing, signed into nothing.. same issue.
Even though i have 2 other netbooks right here w/no issues at all, i tried resetting the AP multiple times. No diff.
Just before the wifi dying it was acting like it was before the reset, where things would randomly fail to stay connected, videos wouldn't fully cache, web pages wouldn't fully load etc. (general connectivity problems that didn't exist in HC, but have in ICS since update)
I think ICS was really the nail in the coffin for this thing.

That sucks.
What's strange is that after flashing CWM and re-setting up my wireless adb it loaded up just fine. Not sure what's going on so I'll chalk it up to gremlins and confirm that it's not a large-scale issue with everyone.
it was the first game i downloaded when i got my machine yesterday, and it gets to the title screen (i assume) with the press any key prompt and then goes back to ouya game menu. Cant get it to work at all.
Cleared the game cache/data/uninstalled etc and no luck. I have not modded my ouya in any way.
Hey, I'm the developer of Beast Boxing Turbo, found this thread with a google alert. Sorry to hear several of you are having problems.
Are you all using USB keyboards or third party controllers attached to your OUYA by any chance? If so, can you see if the game works if you disconnect those, restart your OUYA and try again?
I've had a few reports of crashes when USB keyboards are connected but haven't been able to reproduce the problem on my end. If it IS a problem for you please post the details of the hardware you have connected. Thanks!
You know what, I do have my Motorola Nyxboard usb remote/keyboard combo attached. Sometimes I have to restart my Ouya launcher to make the Ouya recognize it so the fact that BBT started working after I flashed CWM (and thus Ouya didn't recognize that the controller was plugged in) kind of verifies your assessment.
Thanks for stopping by, love the game!

No problem, glad you like it! For everyone else in this thread, the new update doesn't crash any more if you have a bluetooth keyboard connected! I did run into some problems with a USB keyboard seizing the first player position, but it shouldn't crash. That might just require a console reboot and activating the controller before plugging the USB keyboard in. I reported it to OUYA as a bug so we'll see how that goes.

Odd touchscreen glitch after installing Google APKs

I'm on the 5.4.0.1 build, and I'm having an odd reoccurring issue that's driving me crazy.
I'll install the Google stuff in the proper order using the APKs (instructions from a post on this site; I've tried other kits/instructions, same results), reboot at the proper times, and it'll work fine for a brief time. All of a sudden the touchscreen will start to glitch out badly-- a touch on a given spot will register countless presses on the same X axis, but going up or down the screen (looping at the edge) wildly, causing a lot of stuff I don't want to press to get pressed.
If I do a factory reset, it doesn't fix the issue. I have to rewrite the firmware by doing a ADB sideload after clearing cache and factory resetting to get the touchscreen to work normally again.
Any ideas? I really kinda need access to Google Play if at all possible.

If I do a factory reset, it doesn't fix the issue. I have to rewrite the firmware by doing a ADB sideload after clearing cache and factory resetting to get the touchscreen to work normally again.
Any ideas? I really kinda need access to Google Play if at all possible.

Could be a bad screen. You can download touch screen repair apps and try a few of those. Could be dust stuck in between the casing and screen. A safety pin does good to clean that, just be careful. If a new device, you have 30 days to return it for a replacement. First I heard of this issue so that's about all I got right now.

This is my second unit. I expected it might be a hardware issue, and indeed it did act like it, but doing a adb sideload, etc does fix it.
I've also just confirmed the problem starts as soon as I install the Google Framework. Time to do another ADB sideload since I broke it again...
Okay,, no fault of anyone here, I've just hit my patience limit with the irritating Amazon-side stuff-- I've been fighting this for nearly a month and I'm almost out of return time.
Anyone got any suggestions on a relatively cheap Android tablet with at least comparable specs, actual Google Play support, and hopefully OS updates? Bonus if it doesn't have the Bluetooth controller lag issue my Nexus 5X suffers from.
Touch screen is prefect, no glitches discovered. @Firehawke, Fire HD 8 is a best possible cheap Android-based tablet of all the time, you can't find better option even with the cheap Chinese junk-droid from Aliexpress.

If I had a choice, I'd return it and get a Fire 7 (not one from 2017) and hope for one that has a rootable OS. I love my HD 8, but I've pretty much gutted it of Amazon. The only thing not making it 110% is not having root.
