Just an FYI and hope this is the right forum to post this. I updated my version 1 firestick to the latest firmware 5.2.1.2. If you have kodi already installed it leaves it there. But if you uninstall kodi you will no longer be able to side load it. It seems to be blocking side loading of kodi.
How are you installing it specifically? (ADB? Downloader app? PC utility? Phone utility?) Are you receiving some kind of error message? Are you perhaps installing the 64-bit version? (The Sticks are 32-bit devices)
None of my Fire TV Sticks have received the 5.2.1.2 update, so I can't verify if this is true or not.
EDIT: Just to be sure, I just installed Kodi 17.1 RC1 successfully on a Fire TV 1 running 5.2.1.2 using my Downloader app.
I used es explorer as well as adblink both failed to install kodi. Yes I am using the 32 bit version. Even tried to instal Jarvis 16 which also fails.
So I am thinking maybe something is wrong with the firestick stick I have. I have another version one firestick that I updated to 5.2.1.2 and was able to sideload kodi 17.1 on no problem.
Same issues on fire tv, both fail through es explorer and adb. running 5.2.1.2.
what loader?

Remember the firestick runs jellybean and kodi version 17 requires lollipop
Make sure you are installing kodi version 16.1 else it will not install

If your FTVS is on FireOS v5.0.3.2 (Build 535062120) or higher it means your on Lollipop.

confirmed
if you already have kodi 16 on the stick instill kodi17 with adb using :
adb install -r kodi17apkpath
The -r will replace the previous version or you will get an error saying the app is already installed

If the process is the same on aftv then use adbfire to push the SprtsDvl zip to your storage.
Then on xbmc? Assuming your running that on the aftv..since you didnt make any mention of just stated you wanted to install on aftv.
Anyway.
Xbmc go to settings/addons/install from zip/sd or storage/bottom of list will be your zip/install/enjoy.
i try that and put error script, no dependeance error too, if you have one plugins work with that method please share.
Ill assume its because its not playing well with sportsdevil

If you happen to have Sports Devil running on another device with XBMC on it (ipad, ect) you can download XBMC Backup on that device and perform a backup of your XBMC. I saved the file to my NAS. Then download XBMC Backup on your Fire TV and do a restore. I have done this on multiple boxes and sticks and it works great.
How i can backup on me pc to pass to xbmc amazon fire tv, if its possible, can put the stetps to do please.
Thanks

I am using adbFire and found this same sequence on line. I cannot get it to work. I go into the program, push the zip to add ons or sd card (tried both) and it just does not appear on the kodi on the fire tv. I have looked in every folder and can't find it. I started with root/sd card since that's what I saw elsewhere. Any ideas?
You can just download it on your Fire TV then unzip it and move the folder to your addons folder. People are still updating the sportsdevil addon and there are a few places that you can find the updates. The latest version is 1/15/2015. Just google it to find the download.

I couldn't find a recent link either. I found a page with many sportsdevil video plugin zips but when I push it to aftv it doesn't show up for some odd reason. I tried pushing to different locations. I understand not posting those links but if a pm is ok I'd like to get it working, but it's not urgent because I mostly use it for baseball games in spring/summer.

Hello,
finally Amazon released OS 5.1.1 for Fire HDX 8.9 Saturn users and there may be the slight chance that 3rd Gen HDX users will benefit soon, too. Fire OS 5.1.1. is out in the wild for other devices since a while and so the overview of capable "modifications" of 5.1.1 is spread over multiple forums of different (HD) devices and it is not known if they are applicaple for Saturn user or i.e. need to be modified in advance.
That`s why I want to start this thread where I want to collect the capabilities / links for modification of 5.1.1 with Saturn HDX users only! This thread will be modified in the future to list all capabilities. So I need your feedback what you have tested and what is working especially if it is not listed in this post. Please do tell if you modifed something to get it working. And beginners, please do not abuse this thread with general questions to maintain the overview!
Tested and working:
1) Installing GApps without root (no modification needed): From Fire 7 2015 Forum
(18.11.2017) OR use this script to only install PlayStore: http://rootjunkysdl.com/files/?dir=Amazon%20Fire%205th%20gen/SuperTool where you can also remove OTA updates, etc.
2) After install of PlayStore: Root with Kingroot: EDIT 18.11.2017: Download Kingroot 4.8.0 from http://apkmirror.com (use this old version to make it work to replace with the following script below) and transfer it with the Android File Transfer. Use ES Explorer via PlayStore to open and install the transfered kingroot4.8.0.apk.
Afterwards I replaced KingUser with SuperSU with this little Script: Replace KingUser
3) Change launcher with root:
1. Install Nova Launcher (or another launcher) via Play Store
2. Open an adb shell (or use Terminal Emulator via PlayStore)-> su -> pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher
3. Open Nova Launcher again and everything is fine
Untested but maybe possible (volunteers appreciated):
- Change launcher without root: From HD 8 / 10 2015 Forum
Not working
- Installation of custom ROMS like CyanogenMod, Nexus, etc.
Ok, good news! It is possible to root 5.1.1 on HDX Saturn!
Just go to www.kingroot.net with your device and download the latest .apk for Android.
Open and root, it first fails but the second possibility works.
Afterwards I replaced KingUser with SuperSu according to this: http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html
I don't use "gapps"; just installed the "latest" for the 8.9, login/account-manager, framework, play services & play store. Play store didn't work before the 5.1.1 but now works. After the 5.1.1 install, dialogue popped up & said update of play services needed & so I said do it. After selecting "update" & during the update, I realize that the webpage was Google Play store!.
Along with my Play Services update, I got updates for several apps I had side loaded as in Youtube & otherss from Google; later on had some more updates from Google. I didn't install any gapps package, just apps that were not available on Amazon for the Fire 8.9; don't believe that gapps are needed unless one wanted that stuff as it is the access into Google Play Store that is desirable.
Also the ADB command line may not be needed as I did that prior to installing 5.1.1 & don't know if 5.1.1 removed/overrode it.
Anyway, I'm OK with getting my apps gotten from Google will now get auto updated from Google & the stuff from Amazon get updated from Amazon.

Thanks for the guide, everything in the tested and working section worked perfectly
I have the hdx 4th gen 8.9 tablet running latest 5.1.1 and have installed kingroot. Root is working and I have removed a few bloat packages and installed root explorer. I was unable to use adb install for these.
My question is....I am trying to use ADB to install apks, I have turned on the dev mode and set for debugging, My tablet connects, but remains "offline"
I have tried stopping and starting the server with no luck...so I can not sideload apks etc.
I'm wondering if it's the sdk tools, so I went ahead and downloaded the toolkit, installed Java, and now need to install the appropriate android version..lollipop. I also have a firetv stick and have not had to download or install any of the toolkit in order to use adb for installs, so why is the kindle hdx showing me as offline and unable to install. What have I missed? I really don't want to install the sdk packs if I don't need to..(which I didn't need to for the firetv)
Thanks

Use the ADB Drivers in this package: http://rootjunkysdl.com/getdownload.php?file=Amazon%20Fire%205th%20gen/Amazon-Fire-5th-Gen-Install-Play-Store.zip They work flawless for me.
Otherwise install Google Play Store with the file above and use the Play Store to install apps. You still can donwload .apk directly via the browser on the device.
Last but not least use the "general" method to transfer .apk files with Android File Transfer App via MacOSX or MTP on Windows: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2840804?hl=en

To my knowledge working links for older 5.x HDX builds have not been maintained (publicly posted) as they were for 4.x. Upgrading is a dicey proposition as going too far will yield an unrootable build with no rollback option. Examples:
- an OTA update will likely bring you first to 4.5.5.1 (rootable) then 5.1.2.1 (unrootable at present)
- grabbing the latest update directly from Amazon will likely score 5.1.2.1 or higher

OK I grabbed the 5.1.1 from here and updated to 5.1.1
1) Do you know how to disable OTA (I tried the adb shell pm hide com.amazon.device.software.ota and other similar methods without root) - at the moment it started downloading the 5.1.2 update
2) Is there a way to remove the (almost) downloaded 5.1.2?
3) I installed KingRoot but it needs WIFI to root so I cannot root at the moment (if I turn Wifi the update will be resumed)

- rebooting device should discard partial 5.1.2 download
- pm hide and similar non-root methods are unreliable
- download/launch kingroot; only connect when read to root
- see other threads for file that needs to be renamed to block OTA

I was looking for the other threads for the OTA block but couldnt remmebr which one works for Saturn. I remember otacert had to be renamed on Apollo.
So, I did something else:
1) downloaded kingroot PC version, connected via adb/usb and rooted without WIFI
2) Installed Super-Sume+Pro+v9.1.9.apk (to replace SuperSU)
3) Updated SuperSU SuperSU_v2.65.apk
4) Installed Root Explorer v4.0.1.apk
5) renamed /system/priv-app/DeviceSoftwareOTA/DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk to DeviceSoftware OTA.apk_ to prevent OTA
6) deleted /cache/update-saturn_saturn-541113320-to-542169020.bin
7) reboot

If you leave KingRoot installed Kodi video playback will crash every 20-30 minutes randomly.
Root with KingRoot 4.8.1 and a Bluetooth Mouse DO NOT OPTIMIZE! Uninstall Purify within KingRoot then immediately disable Amazon updates and remove KingRoot via ADB shell like this:
su
pm disable com.amazon.device.software.ota
ps
kill <PID # for com.kingroot.kinguser:service>
kill <PID # for /data/data-lib/com.kingroot.kinguser/ktools>
pm disable com.kingroot.kinguser
pm uninstall com.kingroot.kinguser
Root will be gone but Amazon updates are off so you can always reroot anytime you desire. Removing KingRoot does fix the random crashing issue during playback.
That is pretty strange. Just another reason why Kingroot is sketchy.

I'll say this again again! not happening to everyone so don't say do THIS just because it happens to you..... Question why.
I am not saying its not true for you but there seems to be more to it ,ok for me and probably a lot more and not for others.
The last point ... if you are not sure what you are doing with any alteration to any piece of equipement .................... research first.
I would suggest to change the topic title to match the fact that kodi might crash, but not the fire tv.
Also: i still have kinguser enabled and installed (not purify) on my ftv1 and kodi did not crash on me.

It causes issues streaming with Netflix too. Not sure what Kingroot is doing every 30 minutes but it causes video playback to stop.
It's best to just uninstall it after disabling Amazon updates via root.
Hopefully we'll get a bootloader and image to flash SuperSU soon...
I've almost got a heart attack when I saw the topic because "fire tv crashes" sounded to me like kingroot bricks the device.
Yes, disabling it is the best option, why kodi and netflicks crash (did you have the crashes while streaming with kodi?) could be, because kingroot likes to phone home a lot. So maybe blocking all the urls via router or in the host file already does the trick.
For the urls to block see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/general/block-ip-address-kingroot-updates-t3332267

Try this then:
go to settings/system/Developer Options and turn ADB debugging on/off/on/off/on then try to connect again.
Has anyone looked through the kodi logs to see what exactly is crashing? I wouldn't call it random crashing if we generally know (think?) kingroot is responsible. Good work determining that removing kingroot makes the crashes go away, but i wonder what the core issue really is.
All my AFTV's are gen1 and were rooted, otherwise I would dig into this issue. Maybe I will get a FTV stick and kingroot it so i can figure out. Anybody put kodi in debug mode and captured the whole log? Got a pastebin of it?
I bet it'd be the Low Memory Killer. Kingroot probably runs some activity (Updates? Something else? Who knows!) on an alarm and becomes the foreground app, LMK kills Kodi for more free memory.
Doesn't FireOS 5 have logcat?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Just to say that probably best not to remove Kingroot given the recent news that the latest AFTV update to version 5.0.5.1 cannot be rooted by Kingroot. With Kingroot updates can be blocked.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Free mobile app
Kingroot has not caused my Netflix to stop or crash. Seems like something else is causing the issue.
*EDIT* I have Amazon updates blocked through my router.
You may have done this already but check the thread about the update, they're now using a different https url.

Yes, and the disabled state of the update service remains after removing kingroot.
I've seen a number of folks with this issue. I have it often when playing files over the network and I've also seen it when playing TV from my HDHomerun device.
Kodi doesn't crash for me, but video playback halts at seemingly random times.
I hope this technique works for me.
And indeed, getting rid of kingroot
- got rid of the random halt of video playback
- left the Amazon update service inoperable (yes, I tested it, ready to pull power if an update was found.)
This is a gen 1 FTV box, playing video in Kodi 16 via SMB shares and with the HD Homerun dtv tuner - both Kodi and HDH were stopping abruptly for no apparent reason.
i have a small solution to fix the streamcrash issue with kodi with installed KingRoot
do following
unroot and root with KingoRoot 4.1
Start AKGfire and uninstall purify
make a backup of your Kodi Config
Uninstall Kodi and delete all folder called org.xbmc.kodi in /sdcard/Android (found it in data and obb)
reboot Stick
connect to AKGfire again and download andinstall Kodi 16.1 again
AWARE: do not start Kodi
Restore your Kodi data
reboot
then you can run kodi as normal.
start a Stream and enjoy feel happy

Can you try debloat or factory reset and bypass Amazon account registration.

The debloat procedure I keep for New Year
Anyhow big thx
It works for me both stock Amazon and also after debloating/installing Google Play Store with Toolbox utility. Make sure you download 32bit Kodi 18.5 version from kodi.tv web site.
If stock, download Kodi with Silk browser then select the downloaded file notification and enable permission to install apps from Silk. Don't use file manager as it only opens the content of Kodi apk after registering the device with Amazon.
If debloated of Amazon apps with Toolbox utility, after downloading Kodi apk use file manager to install Kodi apk.
