Hey all,
I'm a regular on these forums (throughout the day every day) and like to develop my own ROMs for other devices and help out in every way I can!
I noticed a lot of threads spread out across the AFTV forum for Xposed, Gapps etc. I however feel they should all be in one place!
I will provide details/instructions for things that worked for me.
I will not have guides someone else made without their permission as well as I will provide credits where due!
* I will not cover rooting or installing a pre rooted ROM.
* I will assume if you are here you are on @rbox latest rom/recovery. You have root with SuperSU and a working Busybox.
* Thread will be cleaned and links added soon!
*I will upload files I know work 100% to either my AFH or my Drive folder.
* Eventually (when I get my keyboard/mouse) I will be creating ROMs with all of this baked in.
Xposed+Play Store
I didnt get around to pictures and a more advanced tutorial YET but willpost screens later:
1) Be on rbox latest pre rooted rom and recovery.
2) Download the following: Xposed framework, Xposed installer apk, hdx module apk, open gapps nano flashable zip, lean back playstore 5.10 & Market helper apk (market helper might not be necessary but I used it.)
https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0By9dxKZHr9vaUVhMRnc0RGxTNnc/edit
3) Have a custom launcher already such as leanback launcher or firestarter etc. as well as a root browser like es file explorer and/or root browser.
4) If mouse doesnt work then use a mouse apk such as Wukong on play store.
5) Move all downloaded files to storage of choice (internal sd card, microSD or usb storage)
6) Boot into TWRP and navigate to the Xposed framework and flash it then reboot system.
7) Once booted install the Xposed installer apk and reboot.
8) Install HDX module apk.
9) Go into Xposed installer it should say everythings installed. Go to modules and use a mouse to check the box for HDX and reboot.
10) Boot back into TWRP and navigate to and flash the open gapps zip and reboot to system.
11) Go into system/priv-app/Phonesky/ and delete the phonesky apk and reboot.
12) Using a root browser, navigate to the leanback play store we downloaded and rename to Phonesky.apk
13) Copy the apk and put it in /system/priv-app/Phonesky/Phonesky.apk
14) Set permissions on Phonesky.apk to rw-r-r and reboot
15) When booted back up, using a 3rd party launcher, open Play Store.
16) You might need to use a mouse again to be able to sign into google account.
17) optional step, install market helper apk and set to Google/Android TV.
Play Store should work and download apks successfully.
Note: As usual usb debugging should be on throughout the whole process and when opening stuff make sure to grant su permissions if it pops up throughout the process.
V4A with Neon
1) Download latest V4A apk and push to device.
2) Install apk and open it.
3) When it prompts, install driver (if it gives an option install highest quality.)
4) Download and extract zips at this drive folder (also download the v4a apk while youreat it) :
https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0By9dxKZHr9vaOHJOMkc3TUFsSXM/edit
5) Take all the files and place in respective folders. For example, 50viper.sh goes into /system/etc/init.d/50viper.sh
6) Each file we push needs to have permissions set to rw-r-r.
7) Reboot device.
8) Push universal init.d from the play store to your device and install it.
9) Open it and grant su. You should see the 50viper.sh file. Turn the init.d switch to on in the app and then press the start button towards top right.
10) you should see it say it was started. Now open the V4A app and select the menu button (you can use menu button on fire tv remote) and go to driver status.
It should say everything thing is enabled and supported! Keep in mind it will not show processing unless you are playing audio.
Miscellaneous APK's (Leanback Youtube, ADB Wifi, Kodi 15.2 etc. Is a work in progress...)

Thanks Elliwigy! I am going to try again with playstore when I get home. I couldn't get the playstore to show in Firestarter. I ended up installing the apk as a normal app which gave the error code upon installing anything from the store. I will also try v4a and leanback you tube. I'll let you know how it goes!
worked perfectly for me.
Great work...

So I have a FTV2 that I can't root (yet... hopefully) because it's on the 5.2.4 software - but I needed Google Play Services in order to run a particular program I sideloaded. Using the info in this guide:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-inst...amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick-without-root/
I was able to get (what I believe to be) the latest working versions (for the FTV) installed. The program in question now works fine. Here's what I did (again, all credit to the above source... all I did differently is figure out and download the latest versions of each):
1) Download the following apks (I got all of these from apkmirror) and install in this order:
- com.google.android.gsf_4.0.4-488656 (this is Google Services Framework)
- com.google.android.gms_10.2.98_(030-146496160) (this is Google Play Services)
- com.google.android.gsf.login_5.1-1743759 (this is Google Account Manager)
- com.android.vending_6.8.24 (this is Google Play Store)
2) Once the above are installed, launch the Google Play Store and attempt to login. It'll fail. That's expected.
3) Hit home key and you're gtg!! Apps requireing play services should now work (at least they did for me).
I'm not sure if you have to do the play store part or even install the play store and/or the account manager, but I figured it couldn't hurt.
Hope that helps!
Didn't work for me. Still get the
"app(optus sports in my case - Australia) won't run without Google play services which are missing from your phone"
Thanks for trying to help though.

Any luck with this? I was able to get past this initial issue by installing the Android TV version of the app which allowed me to open, but I get a spinning wheel and nothing loads so I am assuming the framework files are to blame somehow.
All I want is to install a recent version of espxe! As my current version crashes when visiting the preferences screen.
Any help most appreciated!!
Solved
Solved by installing most recent version of expse by transferring apk from device to fire tv so no need to install google play on fire tv 2
I installed and I can get the app to work. It is MSG GO. Now it is asking to allow location services. Thoughts?

Hi,
I have the same FTV2 with the same 5.2.4.0.
And like you I need the Google Play Services for the same reason.
So I installed the exact versions of apks with same the order you provided.
But unfortunately when I launched Google Play Store I only got the cruel error "This app isn't compatible with your device. To fix this problem, go to settings and uninstall updates for the google Play Store App."
You mention that you downloaded the latest version (at that time). Any ideas which versions to download, since they are to many?
Thanks in advance for your kind answer!

Hi,
Can you be more specific on the solution you describe?
Thanks in advance!
Hi
My solution was that I didn't need to install the app I wanted (espxe PlayStation emulator) at all through an installation of google play. Instead I found another android device (tablet) downloaded the espxe apk on that and then copied it to the Amazon fire tv. I messed around with different framework versions but to no avail. I was able to get the 1mobile store installed a lot easier which has many apps but this didn't have the 'paid for' espxe.
Hello, i've got several apps which need google services to work. I am lost, i dont know what to do with my fire tv stick (5.4.2.4)

All must be in /sdcard/opengapps/
Twrp install /sdcard/opengapps/open_gapps-arm-7.1-tvmini-20210406.zip
Twrp install /sdcard/opengapps/update_katniss-2.2.zip
Twrp install /sdcard/opengapps/update_katniss-4.5.zip

I've been searching for a couple of hours and there's no guides or even clarification about what is possible with regards to running non-tv apps on the shield / android TV.
I really need to install a custom internet browser, VoIP apps, syncthing, firewall, maybe libre office who knows etc.
So:
- How do you install Full Google PlayStore?
- Do you need to root? (guide 1)(guide 2)
- I heard you can alternatively sideload apps via ADB. So I guess you need TWRP, and root? And where do you get the apks from?
In general, are there any non-UX limitations of android TV that would cause apps to not run? Or does it have the same capabilities as plugging in a mouse & kb into my phone's OTG port and then casting its screen to a TV?
Well here's a few thoughts without going into too much detail as I'm at work:
Full google play will need a custom rom I believe and you'll need to give up the android tv version of play and leanback functionality (I think)
There may be another method (still losing androidtv but probably needing root)
You can sideload via ADB or via a sideloading app. Or using network shares, USB storage, USB transfer etc.
In the past I've used Titanium Backup (rooted naturally) installed a load of games to my phone then moved the backups to an SD/USB to restore on the SHIELD.
There are also dubious website and alternative stores you can install or visit on the SHIELD. Not a fan of those tbh.
You can get APK downloader addons for web browsers that allow you to download directly from Play Store website. Chrome android doesn't support these I am lead to believe... but installing Yandex broweser and installing the chrome addon to that apparently might work. So then load Play Store in Yandex browser and you can get your apps direct from google... just sadly not the paid ones.
I've been meaning to get on this again myself. I'm really quite pissed that most of my paid Rockstar android games won't install from AndroidTV Play store. These games run fine on SHIELD but are flagged as unsupported. Thus forcing you to download them from dubious sources to get running due to the DRM. The TV store is very disapointing, the layout is bad, there's no reviews and developers just don't seem interested in keeping their apps accessible on the platform when they otherwise should be. The Rockstar games in particular run fantastic on the SHIELD and if I were Google or Nvidia I'd actively be trying to encourage Rockstar to promote these games as SHIELD compatible or enhanced!
I don't know about any technical disadvantages to the platform that hold things back but I'm sure many people here will be far more knowledgable. I just assume an app has to be fully functional with just the remote or joypad to be ATV compliant. I'm not entirely sure on this last question but I will say this, every app I've sideloaded has worked as long as it doesn't require touch control in games. I use a 5way hub so I've always got mouse/keyboard and additional storage options etc. If it can be controlled with one finger you can use a mouse to facilitate that.
thanks for the input. Yeah it sucks for paid apps and games. First I'll see if I can get by with just root and these methods, because I couldn't find any good custom roms for the shield. There is one on another forum but I couldn't get it installed (got stuck at nvidia logo after a successful install)..
I'm a noob to android TV, what's "leanback functionality"?

You can sideload any apk to the shield if rooted but there are apk's made for android tv and just mobile apk's with mobile apl's you lose some functionality of android tv however a keyboard mouse combo or even nvidia shield tv app will help you navigate through those apk's that are not made for android tv
As far as I know, sideloading apps means finding an apk, placing it on the device, and then running it (and allowing installation from unknown sources).
So at what point in this process do I require root? Do I need the root if it's an apk not made for Android TV? What is that process exactly?

I side load stuff to my non rooted shield all the time its true not all apps will work but a majority of them will for some apps that have only a vertical view you can use apps like set orientation to have it in landscape mode just allow install of unknown apps for the file browser you use on the shield.
https://apkpure.com/set-orientation/com.googlecode.eyesfree.setorientation
You can simply place the apk into your downloads folder or wherever you like on the shield tv then install it from there using a file browser I personally use FX file explorer on shield but any should work. You can also use a file browser to add your cloud like google drive or one drive or whatever and install directly from there or browse to a shared folder on pc and install it that way too whatever is easier for you.
Apps that require root to run will not of course work properly on a non rooted device, however there are plenty of apps that do not require root that install and run just fine.
Yeah I always keep my SHIELD rooted for this reason. I don't know what the situation is with TWRP recovery at the moment but I know it stopped working in one of the recent updates. By being rooted you can use Flashfire app to flash zips to the SHIELD if you need to flash let's say GLTools or something like that. I mainly use that to force antialiasing for certain games. One thing you will want is either Sideload Launcher (on Play Store) or TV App Repo. Sideload launcher just loads a launcher that includes your non TV apps (They don't all work with the leanback launcher) or you can use TV App Repo to make shortcuts to them on the leanback launcher. TV App Repo will also need root to work, so yeah that's a great reason to have root when sideloading.
I could adb install the sideload launcher apk (got it from apkpure) to my 16gb shield tv 2017, via a usb-to-usb cable, and it works just fine without root.
Installing root is such a goddamn nightmare. You have to flash a full developer stock image for which you have to sign up to get from nvidia, then install magisk etc, and the killer is you gotta do this manual developer whole-image flashing nonsense every time there's an update from nvidia. Seriously why the hell can't we android users just get a proper version of the full opensource debloated OS that updates itself like a sane person? X_X
[Edit] Installed TV Launcher instead of sideload launcher. It can replace the default launcher and it is also so much nicer: https://apkpure.com/tvlauncher/com.awe.dev.pro.tv
[Edit] So a custom launcher like TV Launcher will insert itself as a suggestion whenever you press the home screen, and you can set it to Always use this launcher, however in many situations, like restarting your shield, it will default back to the stock launcher. You can read this but it's still fine to always have a prompt whenever you press home: https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAndr...hange_default_launcher_on_shield_2017_nougat/
I use Yalp store and set it up as different device (in my case Samsung Galaxy Tab S3). Works really fine for 95% of the time.
Question Please?
Can you please say which shield TV you have? I am thinking of buying one but am put off by the lack of full play store. Being able to install any apk from a USB stick may sway me (but still not sure). What I plan to do is install any apps I want on my phone, use an apk extractor to get the apk, put it on USB then use CX file explorer to click and install. Does that sound all possible on non-rooted latest full Shield?
Cheers.
Eric.

You don't need the developer image to get root.

And if you don't flash twrp, getting updates will work fine, you will just have to root again.

How is rooting a nightmare ? Once your bootloader is unlocked it literally takes 5 minutes to root..
Unlock bootloader
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp.img
install magisk zip
Reboot , you're rooted..
I don't understand why people suggest any other file explorer besides "x-plore". By far the best file explorer out there, 100% crap free. You can install any APK from any location using x-plore.. Most of the time I leave the APK on my network , that network drive is mapped in the shield settings, I simply browse to it with x-plore , and install any APK. If it doesn't make a shortcut in the android tv menu , then simply use "sideload launcher" by chainfire to launch whichever app doesn'T show up on the main menu.

I have the 2015 pro model NVIDIA shield, but do have access to a 2017 model at my brother in laws, anyway extracting apks or getting them from places like apk mirror then using a usb to install will work you can even install them over your network from your pc or laptop using a file explorer program that supports it. I have never tried installing the full play store on my shield as it comes with one, however I have tried to install things using a pc browser and the google play site to the shield and had some luck installing a few apps that are not available on the shields version of play store. So basically doesn't matter where u get the apk you can usually install it to the shield some apps wont display properly which is why I suggested an orientation type program to correctly display and use also be aware some apps might need a mouse or keyboard to function properly when you do this depending on what you install.

If it doesn't make a shortcut in the android tv menu , then simply use "sideload launcher" by chainfire to launch whichever app doesn'T show up on the main menu.

i dont understand y ppl think their preferred app is the same or should be everyones preference.. never really used xplore so cant comment on it but this is bcuz i use fx file explorer.. it has been good to me for years and still counting.. you can access network and more if u get an fx license which is cheap.. u can set up windows, ftp, ssh, webdav over network... set up cloud storage... bluetooth... web access.... fx connect and other means using it.. root installer.. text editor... binary viewer... deals with archives... themes... multiple root settings and other settings... diagnostic tools... has builtin busybox or u can use any other busybox you have installed and more
agreed though, roots easy if you dont have troubles.. not sure what ur runnin but nstv pro 2019 unless its been updated since i last checked cannot simply install magisk.. u need modified magisk.zip which is an older version then need to do some trickery in twrp to get it to flash right then still might need some trickery to get it to boot.. i have to use adb root to change bootstate to orange before itll load and if u dont got adb authorized yet then i use twrp to set a script tochange bootstate on boot.. tyen if u still have problems might need towipe and/or mess with vbmetaand/or dtb partitions.. and im an experienced person when it comes to root, exploits, twrp utilization and fastboot (not claiming to b pro or anything crazy, just know how to use them fairly well and general idea of how things work) so i can imagine some ppl that maybe arent as experienced or new to this particular device would have a difficult time indeed.

elliwigy suggested the best way to have full playstore, Aurora is a frontend for the real playstore, you are not downloading from an unknown source and also allow to install and validate the apps that you have purchased, also it's possible to spoof your shield as other devices making possible to install apps that in other ways aren't available for your device

FireTV-Settings 3.0 Mod Root works on Tank and Mantis without Amazon Launcher
based on https://github.com/rainman74/FireTV-Settings/releases
install as normal APK.
Root is needed.
NewSettingsGerRoot.apk = German
NewSettingsEngRoot.apk = English
FireTV-SettingsGer.zip = Android Studio Zip German
FireTV-SettingsEng.zip = Android Studio Zip English
Feel free to customize it for whatever works best for you! ...

Ok so the apk file is unnecessary with root since the zip is in charge of that correct? This is actually interesting considering that the Amazon Launcher being disabled with root therefore losing functionality to accessing settings unless you were to use adb commands.
Edit: the apk was supposed to be installed, works 100%

Questions...
So does the Zip need to be flashed?
Then install the APK?
Is the Amazon launcher disable by doing this, or do I have to disable that myself?
Can you easily remove it?
The Zip file is for customize.
SourceCode for Android Studio.
You must disable it .
OK so disable
com.amazon.tv.launcher
?
1. install APK
2. Flash zip ( for customize if you want)
3. disable launcher
The zip, what does it modify and how do you go back?
Sorry for the questions, just want to know what to expect if i have an issue...
Install other Launcher.
For mantis maybe you need FTVLaunchX to start the alternate Launcher.
#adb shell pm disable com.amazon.tv.launcher
Install apk to access the settings without amazon Launcher.
The Zip the SourceCode to build apk.
I hope it is understandable now
Thanks bro, this works perfect with ATV Launcher 0.1.2 now i can access amazon built-in apps on 4k stick.
Thanks for this.
Couple of queries:
Lots of icons on my custom launcher. But all start off at sleep. Is this normal? If so why so many icons?
The command to disable the amazon launcher is not working and I do have root. Any ideas?
Edit: Not to worry about the above. I found a new version that gives me just the one icon
Also found the instructions to delete the amazon launcher so that is good.
Only problem that some might have is installing new apps from the amazon marketplace (or whatever they call it).
Any ideas about how to do this?
Use this Version.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=82368799&postcount=1
Amazon Market is not working.
You must sideload the apps.
Also you can push the apps over the Amazon Website to your Stick.
App Updates should be installed automatic.

Thanks for that.
I manage a lot of these sticks. Most I know the Amazon accounts for so will use the web site to push to them if they request new apps.
I will ask for the other account details but if they wont provide them I will send them to the website to install themselves if they want new apps.
It seems Amazon pushed out a new prime Video app today (or I was told about it today) that asks it you want to install it.
Was told it no longer works with this setup if it is installed. Was fine yesterday and no prompt to update then.
Might be a problem with the Prime Video app in general and not this setup, but all my sticks are running these fixes now.
Just tested on one and it is true. Trying to open Prime Video does nothing. Tried both the icons for it (one never worked but now both do not).
Will see if I can roll it back (once I find the original apk).
Thanks for this. So nice not to see the Amazon Launcher at all now.
Hi XDA,
Phone: OnePlus One Pro 8
Model: IN2025
OS: Oxygen OS 11.IN11AA
Magisk:1469b82a (21101)
I recently rooted my phone and it works quite well, I have used Magisk Hide to 'hide root from my banking apps', it works so does NFC and google pay.
I hide the following service through magisk hide: (Banks, Google Play Game, Google Play Services, an authenticator (Duo Mobile))
1) However, I don't seem to be able to install some games from google playstore, namely : Eve Echoes, World of Warships, Warpath ..all of them download but give the error "Can't install, try again"
Is there a work around?
2) On a side note: is apkpure a trusted website (they seem to have APKs for everything)?
Thank you!
Cheers,
DV

I'm not sure about why google play won't work, probably you can try to wipe data and cache of the Google Play services and google play store and maybe that would work?
I have the apkpure app and it works beautifully, it updates my apps and games faster than the app store and even beta version you can find there. I mainly use apkpure so I can download games and apps that are "not available in my region"

@dvartak May sound stupid, but does the Play Store app has storage access ? I had the same message when using microg and the Play Store, I wasn't able to install any "big" app until I gave the storage permission.

Hi,
Yes, it does. I can install big games and apps. I can install Genshin impact and other games(offline), which is why I am perplexed as to why others won't install.

That's bizarre never heard of it
Can I ask, have you got the dreaded lucky patcher installed?
If not then might be time to clear down play services, play store, play games etc, sign out - sign in
Try pushing the game by saying you want to install it via the web.
Go here and sign in, then find the game, choose your phone and itll push to your device, don't let the play store open the link
https://play.google.com/store
What modules do you have installed??

No lucky patcher
The only thing I have installed is systemless. I tried installing magiskhide props config to see if it helped; it did not, so I uninstalled it.
On the web, it says 'installed', but it isn't.
EDIT: I tried with another gmail account, reinstalling google play games.
Other online games such as Clash of Clans seem to work, so does Among Us and Genshin Impact.
The ones that don't work that I have tried: Eve Echoes, WarPath and World of Warships < All of these show up as installed on the web (but aren't installed on any android device that I own).
Eve Echoes downloads starts installing and gives the error unable to install.
Can some one who is rooted try if these games will work.
ok, one more interesting update: Netflix app seems to work, I thought it shouldn't work on rooted phones.

Ill try them, see what I get, not my types of games but sure np.
Must have detected root.
I think it's the game detecting it, not your system. Or Google play won't allow the installation if you're rooted on those games.
I'll try them now.
Seems to be working for me..that's warpath.. Installed then verified in game. I have play protect off
This is my version of magisk on canary.
Edit: Image uploads not working on the app.
It's version 1469b82a
You could maybe change to canary then update, will need to repatch and update magisk manager. It's easy, no need for ADB

Just so that I have understood it correctly,
Step 1: Set channel to Canary,
Step 2: Update Magisk and Manager to whatever is latest
Step 3: move the magisk_patched file to my downloads folder
Umm..what do you mean by repatch and update magisk ?
Sorry

Ok so change to canary.
Head back to the normal magisk screen.
You'll see two install/update buttons
Top is magisk
Bottom is magisk manager
Update the manager, it'll download,, then click install.
Next click magisk then install directly
Reboot and you're done .
PS: have your original magisk patched img ready just in case but I've done this a LOT and have never had an issue, so you'll be fine.

One quick question, should I disable magisk hide (settings) and systemlesshosts before doing this ?
EDIT:
a) ok so I tried this, I disabled the magisk hide before attempting this, it detected my magiskpatch during direct install. When the phone rebooted things were a bit slow and my internet was not working. Another reboot and everything was fast again, but no luck with Warpath.
b) Tried to clear cache and storage for playstore and google play games. Shutdown the phone, started it again.
No luck.
c) I downloaded APKPure to try and download 'Warpath', it downloaded but would not proceed with installation., I had to manually click install APK.>The game starts and asks to download additional files..., files are downloaded and it fails to install.
In the grand scheme of things it would be great if I could install everything, I can get by with not installing these games. I fear that this might an issue with others apps as well although so far I have not encountered any problems.
Any other things I could try ?
2) On another note, I wanted to know how I could backup my active partition (just incase I want to try things and something breaks).
3) This might not be related at all, I noticed that my root folder (using solid explorer) shows 0B free of 1.42 GB. Is this normal that the root folder is completely full ?
Thanks!

Yes it's tthat's similar to mine. It's possible that that's the problem but I've not witnessed that before, maybe it is the problem.
Ok so it seems were running low on fixes here..it's almost certainly a permissions issue, maybe the system space? I'm guessing!
Have you tried to mount namespace??
Did you hide magisk manager? Unhide it. Btw I don't mean magisk hide I mean the manager, then reboot.
I'm not sure if there is a way to reset all permissions to apps including Android system apps but that would be my next step.
Beyond that, remove modules and wipe system in recovery, it'll be you're system, apps, settings, but storage will remain, it's what I do if I need to start over as system is where 90% of issues reside.. You will need to fastboot boot the magisk patched img then directly install after.
If it's not that then it's a deeper problem and even though it's just a few games at the moment it won't fix itself, so without a tonne of troubleshooting then it'll be MSM or full zip restoring. Probably MSM though as you'll get fresh everything.
Hang on your internet didn't work??
That's a sign that you're using a boot.img from the previous firmware??
That could be the problem. Re download you're firmware using oxygen updater mate.

Apologies for not being clear.
My wifi was connected there was just no data transfer.
The only magisk patch I have is from the large file that the phone/oxygen OS downloaded to get me OS 11. You helped me on my other thread.
