Unlock bootloader without LG (US996) - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Is there a way I can unlock my bootloader and root without getting the code or whatever from LG? Doing that instantly voids my warranty and I'm reluctant to do it after owning a G2 and a G4, don't need to explain that haha!
LG repaired my G4 bootloop with it unlocked and rooted because it wouldn't even turn on. I at least would like to retain that chance should my V20 completely fail to the point of not turning on. If they issue me a code to unlock or whatever they do that chance is gone.
I've been searching for 2 or 3 days and everything related to the US996 says to unlock through LG.

Question about warranty

hello
i have samsung GS7 that uses security feature called knox! root this device cause warranty void!
i want know that rooting V20 cause void warranty or not?
tnx
Most phones have warranty voided as soon as you root them. The V20 falls under that blanket as well. I'm not sure if it's every model version, or just carrier-locked ones. But as a general rule, rooting voids it on most phones.

with knox security bit (that uses harware qfuse) any root status can be detectable and it never get back to normal even install official rom again!
actually i want know if i install custom rom on V20 then install a official rom again, is it detectable that i rooted device??
There is no knox like system on the v20. If you restore using a KDZ then there is no way for them to know.
As someone who just turned in a rooted v10, tmobile doesn't seem to care if it is rooted or not. In fact they didn't even bother to turn it on when I turned it in, I told them it has the boot loop of death and they didnt even bother to diagnose it or anything. Got 200 credit for the broken phone too.
The catch with marshmallow and newer is there will be a notification that indicates the phone is rooted (cannot verify file system for corruption or something similar shows up on boot).
You can always unroot the device just in case.
There is no e fuse like knox on Samsung's (which cannot be reversed since it's a hardware switch rather than software); the v20 can typically be brought back to a stock condition in which it doesn't look rooted.

unlock LG V20 LS997 Available?!

So i still havent came across a legit V20 Factory unlock method for sprint variant that doesnt involve rooting and flashing the US996 Rom anything out there?!

no and there never will be.. its not factory unlockable its bootloader locked. The root method is replacing the locked bootloader with the us996 unlocked one. No other way around it. You can buy a unlocked version if you would prefer but the LS997 is locked and most likely all newer phones will be locked going forward.
So those pages saying they can unlock it for a fee are lying?
The reason i havent done it with the root method is because ive heard its really buggy and unstable. And something about static screen which idk what it is lol

uicc sim unlock isnt unlocking the bootloader.
2 diffrent things. If you own your ls997 and its paid for sprint will unlock for free,
otherwise your asking someone to help you unlock a either stolen device or one that's not legally allowed to be unlocked since you haven't fully paid for the phone. The later is something that's prohibited on XDA
---------- Post added at 05:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:58 PM ----------
The uicc card slot is unlocked with dirty santa as a SIDE EFFECT, was not the intentions of unlocking the device.
The process was targeted at the boot-loader and the ability to have it unlocked to be able to customize the device and change the software.
The UICC unlock is something else, and can't be discussed on here really. If a MOD would like to correct me, i'm pretty sure device unlocking, and anything related to that is a no-go topic. Legally Sprint or any other company for that matter has to provide the unlock for the device once it completes its term or is paid off, other wise there's a reason why it cant be "unlocked" by them, usually theft is the reason, or past due / delinquent acct
Ohhhhhhh i see..

Lg stylo 3 m430 cricket

Isnt any threads on this device.
Figured Id start one.
At first glances. No root. Oem u lock is in dev options. No fastboot does have dl mode. I doubt root will come anytime soon.
I do really like this device. I have averaged 6 to 8 hours of sot time
Been attempting to pull a stock image for restores with lgup and flashtool
So everyone knows the cricket version is downgraded. Only has a 1.4 ghrtz quadcore i stead of the. Octacore. And only 2 gb of ram verus the 3 i see everywhere else.
Camera reminds me of the g2s
Kingo kingroot and all the one clicks dont work. Next will be zeroing the laf to see if i get fastboot. The no root debloater app doesnt work on this device either. So finding root is a must.
Im assuming as owning many lg phones the bootloader is not locked but signed so without the signing key and a modified laf partition to enable fastboot with accepted unlock commands or an engineering bootloader
Unlock will be highly inprobable for some time. Or unless a exploit such as bump or loki or something very similar
Just got this phone 2 days ago and it's pretty snappy and I am quite pleased with it honestly. The fingerprint scanner was the selling point... And price lol. With root this device would be no doubt a beast.

thats funny my finger print scanner has yet to reconize my finger i registered both my pointer fingers twice and still nothing.im a mechanic so my prints are pretty trashed but i tried for like 4 or 5 hours and just switched it back.
all im waiting for is a stock firmware as of rite now no atni roll back is implented or 0. so first firmwares usually is first rooted or moded takes a load of messing with laf and recovery partitions

My fps works great, I'm sorry you're not sharing the same experience there was an update yesterday morning, it took a while to install but I'm still at 7.0 so it couldn't have been anything too major

I very much enjoy it, and this phone. It's funny, when I tried kingroot I think it was it read my phone as a G6 I wonder if there is a rooting method for the LG G6 we could try?

ive been all over it trying and trying ive started looking into other lg methods with locked bootloaders and nougat
the v20 just got nougat to so hopefully between the g6 and v20 root methods that may come to be we can adapt one to us
sucks the old root injection throws secure bot cause nougatchecks system to see if modified its gonna be mnore of a systemless root from what i see and know
The v20 uses the dirty santa exploit to obtain root.
The LG G6 doesn't have root yet.
If the bootloader is signed, Safestrap is how we got around it on AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 3 n900a. Still have to have root first tho.
It looks like boost, cricket, T-Mobile, Straight Talk all have the LG Stylo 3 so far. So alot of people will own these because their cheap.
I'd like to get one myself but without root and ROMs no thanks.
Help
Has anyone found a solution to the root of a lg m430 yet???
Off thread device;
Anyone currently looking into the Stylo 3 straight talk bootloader unlock? (Does it just come down to lg bridge recognizing the device?)

I did not. I gave the device up pretty quickly
Please excuse me if this is a silly question. What would running "fastboot oem unlock" do, if anything, to this model? Apparently, unlocking the bootloader on the LG Stylo 3 Plus is this simple (assuming OEM unlock is turned on in dev options, of course). I realize the non-plus model is different, and Cricket's LG-M430 even more so, but has anyone tried running this command and can confirm it doesn't work? I wonder why LG would freely allow the Plus to be unlocked, but not this model...Perhaps Cricket had some say in this?
Also, (another noob question) am I correct in thinking that rooting without first unlocking the bootloader will NOT trigger some unwanted mechanism of the bootloader? From what I've read, a locked bootloader only verifies the integrity of the kernel and recovery, and will not check for "illegal" root access. Are there any built in mechanics that check for root? I ask out of curiosity, as I am aware there are currently no root exploits for this phone. It seems like you all agree unlocking the bootloader is the most logical first step. Is there any benefit to figuring this out first over trying to simply root the device? Thanks in advance. I'm very interested in understanding all this, and am hopeful that I'll be able to somehow contribute in getting this model rooted.

The way that they locked the bootloader prevents you from getting anywhere close to fastboot. LG has this locked down severely.

You can't hardbrick your device by unlocking the bootloader.
You can with flashing wrong versions of stock rom, downgrading and taking OTA afterwards and maybe by flashing a really bad custom rom.
There may be more scenarios but unlocking is not one of them.

I don't see a reason for that and I never heard of cases where a device gets bricked with that firmware update. The 93-10/92-10 firmware is uploaded here and I know that users locked their BL with it. Motorola allows unlocking for retail devices, it would be very bad publicity if you go on their website, get the unlock code and after using it your device gets bricked.
Just use no toolkits for things like locking, rooting or flashing TWRP, do it the manual way.

LS997 Oddities

Hello Everyone,
I have two different LS997 that I purchased from ebay (but from two different sellers). The first one I purchased simply won't activate on a Sprint MVNO (despite the IMEI and SIM being clean). The second one activated without any issues whatsoever.
I didn't notice until this weekend, but the one that activates cleanly has the Sprint logo as a bootsplash. The one that does not activate has the LG logo as a bootsplash.
I'm really not sure what to make of the one without the Sprint logo. It won't activate, but it will update (I originally updated it from a pre-ZV8 release, before I knew about that restriction).
Is there an LS997 variant that is non-Sprint? Is there something else I should be looking at, or other reasons I'm unable to activate this phone? Even the Sprint FE check comes back clean, so I really don't know what the difference is.
Thanks in advance.

The LS997 is strictly sprint it is possible that the phone had the bootloader unlocked and rooted with dirty santa before arb was incremented so they may have flashed a 996 rom on the phone.

It shows as an LS997, and the software version looks as expected. However, the behavior of the phone doesn't match the other V20 (which activates fine). If I have an unlocked bootloader on this one, is that any use at this point? Given that I can't use fastboot mode, and I understand that booting to LG software wipes the recovery (according to the threads I read), how do I use the unlocked bootloader?

If the bootloader is truly unlocked, you should be able to flash twrp and then root the phone, why can't you use fastboot?
