I'm disappointed to see that Android Nougat doesn't yet support the Secure Folder feature that the Note 7 had. Does anyone know if Samsung's My Knox app provides comparable functionality? And are there any drawbacks to using My Knox? (I see that it's incompatible with rooting, but that's ok for me as my S7e has always been stock unrooted.)
I noticed that a link to the Secure Folder APK has been posted, but by then I'd already installed the My Knox app. The app's features seem similar to what I recall of Secure Folder from the Note 7.

You can use it with root.. you just need a custom kernel which fakes the knox counter to 0
Secure folder is better in one thing I believe.. you cannot see what is inside it unlike my knox
Also you can download Secure folder Apk.. it is working well with my rooted nougat S7E

Looks like My Knox hides its apps when it's in launcher mode, but not in folder mode (does Secure Folder have a launcher mode too?).
I think I'll stay with My Knox at least for now, unless there's a decisive advantage to Secure Folder that I haven't learned of yet.
It seems that My Knox, and any apps in it, can only use internal storage, not the SD card. Does Secure Folder (via the APK) have that limitation as well?

What's the security disadvantage of using the SD card if it's encrypted (or if Knox adds its own layer of encryption)?

Because it is a removable memory.. you may plug it into a laptop for example and discover the secrets of knox!
You cannot do that with internal storage because it doesn't support mass storage anymore nowadays

No, not if it's encrypted. All you'll see is a bunch of meaningless random numbers. That's what encryption is all about.

Yes, but if the SD card is full-disk encrypted by Android, then everything on the card, including file structures or Knox data, is unreadable when the card is removed from the phone.

It would take repartitioning to do so. If you didn't already know that, and considering the nature of the device and how easy it is to brick it permanently, you shouldn't even mess with it.
My question to you is...
Why on earth do you have 800+MB of apps installed in the system directory?! Aside from a few Google apps, you shouldn't explicitly install anything to your system directory. You're just asking for problems.

Actually, Out of the 872MB on "system" partition, About 760MB are occupied by the system rom (Maybe a bit less if you're on kinology), Which leaves us with about 100MB give or take for applications, Which is STILL plenty for system apps, So let me rephrase your question, Why on earth do you have 100+MB of apps installed in the system directory?!
But anyway, to answer wing-zero's question, There is no way you can add to that space, You'll have to make do with what you have, Maybe you can remove some of amazon's bloatware? But be very careful what remove.
Another solution would be to install kinology rom, It's modified to allow you to normally install any application that would otherwise be required to be put in System/App to work.

i think amazon use a lot of system memory , for a 16 g device having 12 for users they use like 4 in their "os"

Ok I'll admit, my number may have been a "bit" exaggerated, but that doesn't change the fact that installing apps (other than Google's apps of course) to the system directory is risky business. The system directory is on it's own partition and user apps are installed to a partition separate from that for good reason.
AFAIK, the userdata and system partitions don't contain signed headers so they could be repartitioned relatively safely, ASSUMING YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. I'm guessing from the OP's question, that he/she doesn't, and that option should be avoided altogether.
I think it's probably best to find out why so much of the system partition is being used before deciding on an appropriate solution.
thanks for replying everyone. I got titanium backup which allows me to freeze apps to see if it could hurt it. I put a few apps, like chrome and few others as system apps. pretty things i dont want to accidentally uninstall that i need. But I did remove other stuff I put in as system apps. Thanks guys. Maybe some of you can help me on my new thread on certificates! lol

I haven't a clue as to what would've broken it, but I'd start by un-freezing anything that's not blatantly a bloat or otherwise undesirable app.
FYI - iirc deleting bloat does nothing to increase internal storage, that's a hard partition, so I always freeze.

are you sure about that? just strange how my storage went up quite a bit after deleting bloat.. if you freeze it or uninstall it i can see it this way but deleting all together should clear up some space.. thats pretty much why root is needed so you can mess with the root file system.. if it didnt clear up space thered be no need to get rid of bloat

Hey all,
I upgraded my ZTE Axon 7 rooted and whatnot to a Samsung Galaxy S8+ about 4 months ago but have really missed being rooted at times. I have gotten a few warning emails from Samsung stating that Knox will be discontinued and replaced with Secure Folder soon, and I was wondering, if Knox ceases to exist, will there still be a reason not to root?
I use Secure Folder quite a lot, but my country doesn't support Samsung Pay yet so the main reason I'm asking is, when Secure Folder replaces Knox - will it still have some issues with rooting? Outside of Samsung Pay and Warranty void etc. I don't wanna lose access to Secure Folder but some of the things I wanna be able to do with my phone require root access :/
Thanks for any input and happy new year to you all!

What should start requiring root access that doesn't now? You don't come clear here. Maybe at some point someone manages to make secure folder working while rooted, But there are alternatives if thats what you are asking.

Sorry, perhaps I should have been more clear: I haven't rooted yet because of the fact that rooting trips Knox but I'm more thinking if Knox is no more, would there then be this same sort of system just with Secure Folder instead?
Things like Pokemon Go spoofing and modifying APK files are things I've dabbled with in the past and have missed doing so with my S8+ hence the question if it will be "safe" to root as far as Knox/Secure Folder goes when we get to a point where Knox is no more.
Just out of interest, what kinds of apps work the same as Secure Folder? I have never really needed to find alternatives as I've always just used Secure Folder, but would be interesting to know any experience you have with other similar apps?
Knox will continue to exist. Only the MyKnox app is being replaced with secure folder.

No problem. Knox is their security system that allows them to compete in thee corporate world. If you don't care about thaat, go ahead and root. If you have a physical warranty problem it won't be apparent and if you have a software prooblemm, you should be able to resolve it using Odin and community support.

Well, Parallels space is the one I feel works the best.
Hi,
I just root my s8, but find out I'm not able to use secure folder anymore.
Is there any way that I can use it.
Or do I have to remove the root to use secure folder again.
Many thanks

Generally NO once your phone has been modified you will trip your Knox. Once Knox is tripped you can not use things like secure folder,Shealth, Samsung pay. There is no fix for a tripped knox

Bastards man, why can't they be like they used to with the S5 and below...
Now they just want people to use dumb phones and scare them away from exploring their own devices potential.
Hi,
If you had something, like the pin or password list, in the secure folder, you did the backup before rooting and now restore it, what happens with that list? Is it restored or not? If yes, where?
Thanks!

First, thinking about it, Knox is a bonus. Without Knox you still have access to every function that other Android also have. You can use Google Fit to replace Shealth, Google Pay to Samsung Pay, and Island (by Oasis Feng) or Parallel Space to Secure Folder. Obviously all of these alternatives don't perfectly replace Knox, but there is a reason to root devices lose access to Knox, it's for security. Knox is a subsystem isolated from the rest of the system to store highly confidential information. it's not about you bank data or your nudes, it's to prevent that industrial secrets you could have in your Secure Folder will not be stolen by a malware disguised as a game. There is also a hardware implementation called ARM TrustZone that stores encrypt keys and biometrical data and do security related computing. Remember now that a Root device can be deeply compromised. Normally all we do are tweaks to turn UI better, but you can also change firmware, modify system as you like, etc. To guarantee that your device are safe to store whatever your cautious boss want, Knox could verify every single file of your OS, firmware and beyond, or only verify if a bit have changed from 0x0 to 0x1. That's why they can't be like S5 and below
I'm not here exactly to defend Samsung, only trying to explain why it's works that way (and I'm not an Samsung Employee nor what to spend 3 hours explaining how it's hardware implemented, so what I'm saying is based on my own research)
Is there a firmware that has sandboxing baked in or is there one that would be a better option when running sandboxed apps?
Also, are there other ways to keep apps separated from my normal personal information?
Thank in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I did some Googling but I couldn’t find any technical information on the differences between Secure Folder and a sandbox.
Would you or anyone else have any links to technical information about the differences?
Thanks
All data inside of the secure folder is sandboxed from the rest of the OS.
From Samsung "What is Secure Folder"
Important Notice regarding Secure Folder
Secure Folder is an independent, secured space isolated from any other form of access. Users may not access, copy or transmit data stored in the Secure Folder, including through USB and Wi-Fi Direct, except by using authorised methods such as ‘Move out of Secure Folder’.
