Title says it all
Other than the obvious multiple users on one device, and the fact that tablets are often shared in home/family settings, and how Nexus Q, Google TV will take over living rooms, AND the rumors going around Android becoming an official desktop/laptop OS.
One thing thats got me excited about the multi-user function, is how it can be used to manage business AND personal life on the same phone!
What do you guys think? Will it work?
For sure.
I think that would be a great feature if it could separate your home and work life. But I have self restraint not to mix my home and work lives. But at the same time, it's good to see whats going on in both at all times for me.
Some time ago I read something about VM-Ware is working on something like that. I'm sorry, I can't remember the source of this Information. It sounded quite interesting (many chill ideas and features). Perhaps some googling could help you find out more about this. If I remember right it should be right around the corner (2012/2013).

Looks really good, anyone wanna work on a port for our lovely gs3?
Hmmm...doesn't seem to have generated any interest yet...
In an interview with the CEO of Jolla, the interviewer asked if he could put this on his GS3, the CEO replied "Enabling Sailfish for a device such as Galaxy S3 is something that any community member could already do."
The SDK is released online here (I believe)
Unfortunately, I have no technical expertise in this area, is anyone else interested?
Could this be better than Jellybean?

I'd love to play around with it. The Ambiance feature looks really really cool.
A port form a different OS would only be good for the community However, I have no skills in developing or porting so I can't help except perhaps a small donation to whomever gets it done.
Same here, looks fun but no idea how to do it
I want! Looks awesome!

This have to be done! I really want sailfish!
It's awsome .
I's a good OS ! But not for geeks for sure .
It will only turn heads of people who want to use it for daily usage . Not for heavy customizing ,
BTW The gecko / Firefox OS Would be awesome ! as it is an HTML 5 Based OS / or just a web page :cyclops:
Man no Google now voice search. Gapps. Or play store apps.
Its looks nice but right now in this phone world its apple Google and Microsoft. I may want to try out the new Ubuntu os since Google is technically Linux.

Sure I would still prefer Android as my main platform, but I would LOVE to try this out on my GS3! I've always been an OS geek, and love the feel of exploring a new, beautiful, and innovative UI, as well as learning how the underlying platform works and differs from similar setups. It's why I've been playing around with Linux distros and customizing and tweaking them, Solaris, BSD, etc long before Android, despite the fact that I'm no developer. I would LOVE to be able to play around with different OS'es on my GS3, rather than just different Android roms, and Sailfish is one of the most interesting to me. I'll probably end up using Ubuntu more than anything if we get it, but Sailfish is something new and different and it looks really fun. :fingers-crossed:
Can someone link the story of a Jolla dev saying it can be ported easily by the community? If so, let's get this project started, and find out what needs to be done to make this happen, I'm tired of all these different OS'es coming only to the GNex!
With the re-merge of Android and Linux, and addition of the ARM drivers to the mainline, these types of alternative OS'es shouldn't be terribly difficult to port, and between Alien Dalvik and Google writing all their apps in HTML5 for ChromeOS, we should be able to get the basics of what we need from Android running on here, we just need to get the OS running!!

You realize that Sailfish is also technically Linux, too, right? And you realize that Ubuntu OS won't have Google Now, Gapps, or the Play Store either, right? So why are you naysaying Sailfish but optimistic about Ubuntu? You, sir, make no sense.
Why Sailfish might be a "GOOD" idea too...
The simple fact is I just bought a NOTE 2. First Samsung Device and aside from the S-pen, making a different way of interaction.
We have this to consider. As i have been readng how to 'setup' my NOTE 2 as it's on order and pending... I have come across
threads about how GOOGLE is trying to get 'us' the end users off of SD cards. Other Crap like that... Google has power now,
and they are acting so far like EVERY other US company that gets it. M$, Apple...
It's nice to 'have' something else to look at that is OPEN and someone noted something that is a concern to me. Customizable
look, and features. I myself don't like CRAP on my desktop or my HOME SCREENS... I just don't. When I run Linux, I go with no
icons on my desktop.
So this is so far from what I've seen a bit of a turn off but in the future because the system has to start somewhere... if it's really
open, one would hope such features could be expected. Either 3rd party or by the main OS makers.
There have been enough complaints here by users about devices without SD CARD access. About how Google is trying to cut
this off and how ni Samsung devices Samsung had to 'hack' around it to allow SD card access to apps that were used to getting
it.
I for one for simplicity don't want a stupid OS where all my personal CRAP PHOTOS etc are STUCK in the phone. Just for a simple
reason like that.
Another reason we should all hope for MORE OS's to be released is because lets let the DEVICE makers take something back!
Eventually it only takes one to WISE up... loosing money competing OS to OS or by trying to follow up when they have a good device but for example the ANDROID leader is SAMSUNG. I like that LG picked up WebOS SO they're gonna make Smart TV with it but all it takes is a little pebble to start the Landslide.
THese OEM's we want them to wise up and say... WAIT! There's stuff out there... we make the DEVICE and let them decide what they want on it. Isn't waht we all dream of? Cause then stupid crap like Samsungs Flash counter will be something made obsolete by trend.
Makes will possibly start trying to just concentrate on GOOD HARDWARE just like computers, and then maybe some company will really wise up and the only thing they'll contribute will be a device coming with some kind of AWsome MULTI-BOOT loader system ... Or at least if the devices are open someone can make one... haha.
Also about the Ubunty on mobiles thing... well, it's an interesting idea but seems like they are still not planning to get anywhere with it for a whole year? I wonder why...
Sailfish is using the WHOLE Linux... it's the same thing, but with a UI set for imbedded and small devices. SO all that needs to be done in the future is a step up to a whole desktop for bigger screen devices or if you dock your device to a large screen... so in other words...
Sailfish could have the same potential as Ubuntu...
I have personally never used Ubuntu and hope that with the option of sailfish what we may see is other Linux projects joining the trend. I mean really... it's all OPEN source. What actually bugs me the most as an end users is also the same problem that I see with some Linux projects.
Everyone reinventing the WHEEL trying to make the best this and taht and this is the real reason in some instances it's taking longer to do something that is lying around and could be modified and it's true, I don't speak with any experience in coding or programming but I think some who do know what is said is a bit true in some instances just like in some a total rewrite may be in order.
but if it's OPEN, then the parts are there.
So either way... it'll be good to see SAILFISH and other things. I'm sorry, but the whole TIZEN thing doesn't appeal to me pesonally. If it had more underlying structure other than the HTML 5, cause frankly, I am not real happy about every little thing on my system always
being connected to the internet in some way... though yes, I realize HTML 5 is just a way to create graphics but, remember these are companies we're dealing with here and they always have their own agenda.
Anyway... I'd like to see Sailfish vs Windoz OS, cause Micro$haft has not changed their ways and I don't expect to see them do any different than they have and their system will be similarly locked in ways but differently or in differently places as much as Apple's.
Android is open now but Google is acting weird and some competition and innovation can keep it open longer...
So, I'd love to see Salifsish fly or is that Swim... and of course they need to start somewhere and 90% of they users will be people who just want it to 'work' and that's where they need to go first. Us power users, etc in this forum, we're like the 10% or less now. Before
we were the people buying smartphones but when smartphones are now what the average user is getting their hands on?
Forget it... you bettre make something that they goo OOOH perty, and it's simple. OR you will be lost in the market. I also recall that
Sailfish is coming out here in the Asian market if I read taht right a couple month ago. I am an expat living in CHINA and believe me.
They want it simple and pretty, anything else... and it will fail. But once it hits this market, where a lot of stuff for Android is being made now
if it is accepted... then it will start having things made for it and if it can run Android apps, it's a true plus...
Depending on what hardware it comes out on, if it's able to use the simple apps I use in Android, it may be my next device to replace my daily users...
Obviously the NOTE 2 is going to be my KIND device and isn't exactly for 'daily' use in the way that I use my devices.
Still, the more the merrier and frankly, a lot of OEM's will want to get off of being branded as ANDROID device makers or whatever if they want to sell.
Also it's all good that ANDY is merging back with main kernel, but so far... there is still NO REAL work you can do with Android despite this yet. I do mean, such as prepare a very good OFFICE DOCUMENT, Power Point presentation and so on that you would on a computer. Though I hear the Open Office to Android project is going... so one can but wait and hope.
I would love to try this out on my LG optimus 2x SU660!

Wow. should try
I would love to see this OS running on my S3.
very cool... watch the hands on video. Note that they say that android apps will be ported over for the sailfish os, SO i would imagine that even if gapps are blocked etc. that they would likely work for the most part, or could be made to work ... lol :highfive:
Im definitely interested in anything that has quality (obviously this does!) ... and represents a new form of competition
I think this is pretty damn awesome. The hands on videos on YouTube look great, especially the ambiance thing.
Honestly, the phone looks good too but i would rather keep the beast hardware in my S3 and maybe get an S4, but having this OS on it would be awesome.
If someone had a way to dual boot Sailfish and Android, that would be epic.
Sure, it isnt completely and utterly customizable. But Sailfish seems very natural to use and at the same time you can still tap into all the Android apps!
Simple OS + Android apps.. what's not to like?

Dat comment. You must be somekind of an expert

IOS 7 looks like Jolla.
So I've Been a Big fan of Ubuntu for a while and I was thrilled to see that they will be releasing a phone OS sometime hopefully soon. Since I have the laptop dock I have always wanted to try to put full ubuntu on it. However that never fully worked on and had to be done on a blur based rom. I love the new JB rom I have on my phone as It performs well. But at the end of the video 21:00 Mark Shuttleworth, the Founder of Ubuntu stated that Ubuntu Phone runs on ARM based chips and Android Kenerals and Drivers.
I'm just wondering Who else would love to see this run and be compatible on the atrix AND the dock. If we still have a decent amount of developers I'm sure this is more than possible.
Heres the Link for the video:
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone
Just putting the idea out there, but if there are any developers capable of this I'd be more than happy to support.
phone spesification is enough for run and if canonical is behind this i think its possible
I was about to post this as a new thread but when I saw this thread I decided to post it in here.
Happy New Year!
According to the video below Ubuntu for Phones will be compatible with any Android designed-hardware. If I understood it correctly, Atrix last chance is with Ubuntu for Phones for sure.
http://www.androidcentral.com/canonical-announces-its-ubuntu-smartphone-os
I have already said that once before that one reason the OEMs lock the bootloader of their phones is to prevent other platforms to be installed to shorten the life of the devices.
Millions of capable Android devices have already been abandoned due to lack of software support which I blame Google directly to allow the implementation of Wild Wild West on Android platform. The only loser in Android world is and will always be the consumers. Ubuntu for Phones will be the left jab that Google didn't see coming. I personally looking forward to see what Ubuntu for Phones can bring this year.
Update: it seems Ubuntu for Phones will not be available until 2014
Seems BBC covered the story
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20891868
and in the article says that it will be released for the samsung galaxy nexus. porting from that to the Atrix may be hard, but it should be like CyanogenMod a little. So thats a little boost to say the least.
I also emailed canonical and showed interest in helping with the project especially with the lapdock capabilities, so ill let you guys know what I get back from them, and If its any useful Ill be sure to forward it to every developer possible.
Yes and simply
Yes it's possible for our Atrix, jus read that :
"Easier hardware enablement
We have teams based in Taipei, Shanghai, London, Beijing and Boston to engage with your engineering and factory operations – and their sole focus is to deliver a crisp Ubuntu experience on your device.
Ubuntu has already been adapted to run on chipsets using the ARM and Intel x86 architectures relevant for mobile devices, with the core system based around a typical Android Board Support Package (BSP). So chipset vendors and hardware manufacturers do not need to invest in or maintain new hardware support packages for Ubuntu on smartphones. In short, if you already make handsets that run Android, the work needed to adopt Ubuntu will be trivial."
So alright we don't MAKE handsets that runs android but we have one, we also have the kernel drivers no ? so with that it's like port a cyanogenmod ROM I think. My quote come from canonical web-site (sorry new member so I can"t post outside links ><) so it's a truth information

Yep, we have Ubuntu drivers but we're not sure we will be able to use them. But indeed the project of having Ubuntu running as main OS on the Atrix is realistic as we have all the material (HW and SW) required for this, if our devs know how to use them, but I think a whole team would be required for a project this big. It's not just a port of Cyanogen, it's not about taking a kernel and some drivers and snap them with a more recent UI and newer apps. We only got a kernel and an X server, it's far enough but the thing is that this X server was published to run on dev platforms. But also know it can be used on an Atrix, but how to integrate it with a whole new platform ? It will require time mostly. I think. And devs. But we don't have many devs so we only have hope. But maybe the devs on XDA will look more at the Atrix and Webtop.

Actually it's supposed to be available late 2013 - according to lifehacker....
http://lifehacker.com/5972559/the-ubuntu-mobile-os-introduced-today-coming-to-phones-in-2014
The Ubuntu Phones that ship with the OS will most likely be available in 2013 in the UK, and will clear american shores in Hopefully late 2013, but most likely will arrive around early 2014.
The OS itself will most likely clear for deployment sometime soon for the samsung galaxy nexus, as for a universal build I'm not sure If/when that will be available, so most likely we will have to see if one can be constructed for the atrix.
As far as the lack of developers, I fell that any and all developers that are still in possession of an operational atrix will want to test this, especially on a phone that isnt their daily driver and has capabilities of bringing back a strong webtop front.
absolutely possible
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzc0uMXGFBY
i like the ubuntu webtop, its run smooth and fast :good:
I think the atrix should be able to run it. just not mine unless the new bootloader gets figured out
Well I really think that Ubuntu can run on the Atrix, because they share the same idea, which is killed by Google: The webtop.
We just plug the phone into a dock, connect it to a monitor and that's it. Besides, the original webtop is just a big browser without many supported applications.
Several webtop-mods have shown that it is possible to run a full Debian or Ubuntu Linux on the phone.
And having one OS for mutliple devices is the stratagy that Microsoft now tries with Windows 8 on Tablets. But other than Windows, Ubuntu really got the chance to do it right.
Possible to run, but...
Well, I'm sure, it won't be a real problem to run the Ubuntu phone OS on Atrix 4g, IMHO, I'm really suprised, they used Atrix 2 and his adventages in testing. It's but I'm sure, HW would not work on 100%. Everyone knows, what is a problem with HWA drivers fot ICS+ even on android. Fingerprint drivers will be problem too... the best roms are (at least in my opinion) GB ones. This is the "tax" we pay for extraordinary HW in Atrix 4G.
Another problem in optimalization is the date of release (futher in future...who knows, how many devs will stay..)
This OS already has its own section on xda and it hasn't even been released yet lol anyways u can share your thoughts on Ubuntu for phone here

Thank you very much for your interest towards Ubuntu on smartphones. We have received an incredible response and have been overwhelmed with the general positive feedback! Responses both from the general public and the industry have been far greater that we expected.
In order to make Ubuntu a truly fantastic smartphone experience we will be initially working with manufacturers who will build Ubuntu into their hardware. We anticipate market availability of Ubuntu on smartphones towards the end of 2013.
To reach this goal, and offer a great experience for future consumers, our first priority will be to respond to industry inquiries from manufacturers/OEMs, silicon partners, developers and mobile operators. If you are a potential industry partner, we’d like to learn more about you. Please register your interest through our web form: http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone/contact-us
If you are a mobile apps developer, and want to learn how you can help bring Ubuntu to the phone, you can also find more information on:

Once again, thank you for your interest in Ubuntu!
Yours sincerely,

Hello people.
Searching the past week about this topic, I found the "How to upload" Ubuntu for phones on Tegra Devices like our Atrix.
Here you could find some info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/TEGRA/AC100
This will help un too: http://ac100.grandou.net/nvflash#debian_ubuntu_package
https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra
And here, the Ubuntu for phones. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/quantal/release/
They recommend the Lubuntu 12:10 because it supposedly run from the box. I did not try this yet until I have all the tools(software & knowledge) ready...
It could be nice to have to opportunity to flash it like any ROM, but, sometimes I like the "hard" way in order to learn and develop myself.
Well guys, BON APPETITE !!!!!
While it's possible from a technical standpoint, I just don't see the developer interest which is a shame really, since the device's only weakness is the lack of updates.

This option to install ubuntu is impossible. U would risk to delete/brick partitions or nands. We need a IMG file with the filestructure and flash it with the fastboot/CWM. I can mount ubuntu 11.04 but the problem is no UI loading. Only usable is the terminal.

No is not impossible. You partition an SD card load it up with kernel and system and use a dual boot solution to boot into the kernel on SD card. Of course some minor changes needed on the kernel. But not impossible.
also porting cyanogenmod is not as simple as grabbing a few drivers and adding a few kernel bits. It is a monumental task of trial and error with hundreds of lines of code to patch and sometimes full libraries have to be re written. Shoot the radio layer on the atrix was a quick hack job on cm for atrix.
Porting Ubuntu is tho should be quite easy. And maybe could even one day live in that juicy 750mb web top partition.

You'd probably have to have /home on the internal sdcard to use /osh for installing Ubuntu.
Funny that this is the third thread in the last few days talking about using stand-alone Ubuntu on the device.

Hey guys,
I'm one of the app idea finalists in the LG/Xda qPair Developer Challenge. This will be my placeholder thread for up date to date info, for you all to give ideas/help/criticism.
My app is called qLink.
I am a student of Florida Tech and dev in my free time but never made an app to this scale. This will be a challenge for me but I will complete this app to the best of my ability. I work, am a full time student, and run a charity so i will do my best to keep you updated daily on progress but my response times here may be slow. Just know I am always working on this every day.
i do not have much in terms of pictures yet but will get screenshots up soon.
Whats Working
I haven't gotten the tablet yet so who knows

maybe you could explain it or something like that?
Hey guys. So my original app was going to be to let you actually answer the call from your tablet and use it as bluetooth headset sort of way. However this is not possible due the bluetooth drivers not having ad2p sink enabled even though the tablet is capable. My app will now be a full fledged text client for your gPad. you can see all the texts on your phone and send and reply just as you would with any client on your phone. Development is going good. I have the mechanics of the phone part of the app down. No UI yet, just the code working (so no possible screenshots). I now need to learn how how xml files work to successfully sync the texts with your tablet. That should be done by next week and then i can implement sending the texts from your tablet to your phone. After i will begin building the UI based on Material Design.
The rate this is going is fast so if i complete this soon i will be accepting more (simple as i am a complete beginner) app ideas to do with qPair. I will also be getting back into ROM cooking and hopefully bring a big surprise to the GPad community. This is a learning experience for me, not a competition. So I'm welcome to all help. I will try to keep this thread updated as much as possible, I am a full time FIT student, I have a part time job, and also run my own business, so I have a lot on my plate lol.

Hi I'm also part of the challengers so I'm gonna have app ready and create dev thread once it's ready.
I'd suggest you'd learn a bit about ContentResolvers and http://developer.android.com/training/sync-adapters/creating-sync-adapter.html
For storing data I think you should look up on SQLite (and access it through ContentResolver such as the QPair API one).
Another thing to remember with SMS/Text on KitKat that's Google changed the permissions and API a little bit. you should check out MightyText...
Also if you plan on using LG's QPair SDK the transfer between devices would require you to pass very abstract types (putBoolean, putString etc...) but not custom parcels. so you'll have to do the parsing by yourself.
About A2DP sadly it's not supported by all Android devices I've seen so far only cumbersome hacking through rooting and changing Bluetooth drivers in Kernel would allow it but again it's super complicated unless you're the phone manufacturer (Eg. Apple's Handoff)

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to look into content resolvers and have been looking into sqlite... Yea my app would have to be default on the phone unfortunately unless i find a hackaround but the table portion would appear as a normal app and require no extra permissions. I've created my own sms class for the apps to send the data between another so i wouldn't have to deal with apis I'm unfamiliar with... And i know. I looked into that. I do have one workaround but not the skills yet necessary to make it. I'll be doing that as i learn more.
Ive gotten the texts backup configured for the most part. Im in the testing phase of that. once i do ill begin actually building the app UI and have test builds out for everyone. After ironing out whatever bugs you report and any additional reportings, ill begin taking requests for more apps, and also trying my hackaround to get calls routed through the tablet.
Another round of bug fixes completed. Nearing release stage
Background of app done. Now creating UI according to material design
My workaround for sending sms will not work without root unfortunately so i am now creating a full text app. So that's why it's taking longer than expected. Sorry guys. Be patient with me. I have final exams in two weeks
What is the design concept for your app? did you do some work for UIs?
Yea but there is a bug in it and since exams are next week i haven't worked much at all. It will be minimal material design with hopes for a theme store.
I just realized the contest is over. Sorry guys. With exams, work, managing my seperate business, and still trying to live life i didn't have any time. I'm working on it again but stuck trying to find help sending a database from an array between activities. I didn't win this tablet for nothing and know i will continue working on my app even without the competition.
Hey guys,
I was looking around the system files of my core prime variant sm-s820l VZW USA, and found /system/know your device. Was some videos in there, assuming the ones that help a new user use the phone and understand it, and in the beginning of those it states welcome to using your new Samsung Galaxy S5. Every video that's in that file starts out this way. Everything else about the videos shows exactly the same as the phone I'm currently using. And have for a CPL years now. I really like this phone and I'll be damned if I'm gonna spend a whole lot on a new phone when I don't need to. I know there's gotta be some other ppl out there still using this, now, very cheep still effective entry level smart phone. I've been tweaking and messing around with all sorts of things, mostly through trial and error, trying to get the best out of this device I can. I still have lots to do. Anyways, my question is....does this mean that this device is in all actually a Galaxy S5? Like, did TracFone simply take the S5 and modified the build.prop and added some other mods to make it there own, strap the name "core prime" on it and call it a day? If this is true, I was thinking that there is a whole other world out there in terms of customization/room/kernels now available to users of the TracFone core prime!! With such limited support, it would explain a LOT!!! If needed I can attach a copy if the vids. Would really appreciate it if anyone can shine some light on this!!
