Grandfathered UDP => New Unlimited VZW Plan - Verizon HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I was very surprised to see VZW offer unlimited data with their new plan after attempts to kill off grandfathered UDP accounts. It seems too be good to be true: I can switch to the new plan and save $50/month.
Is there any downside to doing so? I hate to give up my coveted UDP without ensuring there is no catch.

They may throttle you down to 3g speeds after 22gb per month per line, but only if the tower you're connected to is congested.
Otherwise, I really see no downside.

That is what I am thinking - thx for reply.

Also don't forget the 10 GB hotspot limit before throttling kicks in for that. Just depends on your usage/habits if it is worth it.

Solid point. If rooted, is there a way around that 10GB limit by making data appear to be normal phone data usage instead of hotspot data usage?

Also, they only throttle to 3g now, not the dial up speeds that safety mode throttles to, so it's not so terrible.

See image - I'm pretty sure Orbot will accomplish this by using Transparent Proxying (Requires Root) => Request Root Access + Tor Tethering. See image.
I'm sure there are numerous ways to skin this cat though.

Just want to point out that the 10GB hotspot does count towards the 22GB. Not a big deal but good to know. It was one of the FAQs we got in an email at work.

If you have a discount on your plan now, you'll lose it when you switch to an unlimited plan.

Only a military discount will discount the unlimited plan. The accessory discount will still apply, but not any other employee discounts.
At least for now. I suspect this will change in the future.

Has anyone made this switch? I was wondering if you have a rooted phone like my HTC 10, am I still limited to 10gb or does it it treat it like regular LTE through the phone.?

I did, February 13th. Running lee droid. Here is a screenshot of how much data I've used since. 2 Be honest, I have not noticed any difference at all except for apparently when I get the bill it'll be cheaper. Yes, rooted, unlocked, s-off

I HAVE noticed a huge difference. Its much worse on the new plan. As soon as i went over 20 gb, i felt delay and weak speeds .
One of the screenshots are downtown Columbus OH ( home) where i used to never had any kinds of issue and the other one is downtown Nashville TN. The signal bar shows good, but even a YouTube video would not load.

New plan Nothing like the old.
They may say only in congested areas but I've got audio recording from supervisor level CS who readily admits its nothing more than the same throttling other carriers do. Maybe even worse. When I changed I heard all the same that its only after 22gb and only noticeable in congested area. I live square between three towers at less than 4 miles and my entire county has less population than 8000 (40 square miles of area). The first day was fine speeds around 3 to 4 gb/s the following day speeds of .05 to .25 we're the norm that's dialup and less. Numerous calls to CS including escalated to exec CS found no one willing to admit problem with their claim to not throttle. In an area like mine at 3 am speeds slower than dial up are plain ridiculous. 3rd day finally got someone to admit it amounts to throttling with "high use" customers. They agreed to move me back to old plan since new billing hadn't started and so far so go on old plan speeds back up and not noticeable problems.
Please be careful changing to new plan because odds are you won't notice these spped problems until after new billing begins and then no chance to get old plan back. BE AWARE. THEY WANT OLDER UDP GONE. Along with just finally booting some extremely Hugh use customers now they're coming for us with what amounts to false advertising.

I know several people on the new unlimited, and they are getting speeds of 40 to 60 MB/s after racking up 100GB in downloads for the month. They are definitely not throttling everyone. I guess everyone's mileage varies.

My point is what they are telling everyone isn't applicable to everyone and they have zero control once you go past billing date. I got lucky and caught it because I switched mid cycle. Please just be careful when it comes to giving up your older UDP. Also since you've pointed out others getting by I'm back to the 20-40 I used to get before the change so it looks like no I'll effects from switch back. Just be aware. They've wanted rid of the grandfathered plans for a while now and the best way would be to trick us into thinking the new plan was "basically" the same. Then after its to late to do anything BOOM you stuck with crappy speed and big bill. Anyhow just trying to warn others of the trap I fell through.

Sure enough, i'm now getting 96 kbs down / 105 kbs up.
I wasn't aware there was such a threshold on the Android unlimited data plan. I sure don't remember seeing that in the fine print.
Rather annoying that I didn't know this was coming.
I can't say anything about the fine print although I assume there would certainly be some information about the cap but I wish state or federal government would go after telco's who keep claiming unlimited while actually have a cap set.
It's not so bad in your case where I guess it is still unlimited, just throttled, but in Canada if we go over our "unlimited" amount we actually get charged per kb.
Now perhaps if Tmo said it is unlimited 3G data it could be even more frustrating.
Well how much data have you used?
That's a normal T-Mobile thing. Any of the other 3 carriers will shut you off and/or bill per KB.

T-mobile has a fair usage clause. Basically unlimited means that you get to use what the "average" data usage is from all of tmo's data users. If you go over that, you still get data free but you get throttled. It is to help keep the network from being overloaded. Also Tmo doesn't charge you for tethering like every other carrier and I would assume that by getting that message you have been tethering all month.
I have used about 3gigs of data on Tmo and never had that issue come up. You must really be sucking down some data. Be thankful you are not on one of the other carriers. They would have hit you with a huge tethering bill and the associated data charges!
As far as I know the softcap is 5GB.

wow. I checked my account with t-mobile and I had used a whopping 10 gb this month! (I usually average about 4 gb but for the last week I let a coworker with an iPhone 4 tether off my line, and between us, we were sucking up over 1/2 a gig a day.)
No more data for you iPhone dude.
On the bright side, my billing cycle ends in a couple of days.
Wow, I'm really happy to see 5GB is the softcap! I just hit 1GB and started getting really worried. All this tethering to my PS3 for Call of Duty is adding up lol.

I use about 1GB a month...I'll never reach 5GB, but good to know I have some room to spare Definately, Tmob is the best for data compared to the other carriers.

I thought the cap was 10gb. If the OP used 10gb like he said, then it seems 10gb is the cap.
Why did the OP have an iphone tethered to him? Makes no sense!
The Android "plan" for T-Mobile has a 10GB softcap. Not the 5GB softcap.
The throttling is to 50kbps for the rest of the billing-cycle but it looks like there's a bit of give on the throttling.
Cheers,
Kermee

I don't get it. If there's a cap then it's not unlimited. If it's not unlimited why is T-Mobile allowed to advertise it as that?

I gave iPhone guy access so he could setup his new iphone4, also demo facetime and hd youtube (which he can't do over 3g). I suspect he abused the connection since my data usage more than tripled those days...

It is still unlimited. Just throttled. 10 gigs is more than generous.
yeah it is unlimited but to keep network congestion down after you use a certain amount of data they slow you down. They don't charge you more though. The other carriers do a real nice tethering charge if you go over a certain amount, saying that you didn't pay to tether and you would never use that much data if you weren't. T-mo is awesome, believe it!
It could be worse. Some broadband providers are throttling users on their home accounts due to excessive bandwidth usage.

[Discussion] T-Mobile Android Device Provisioning Data Throttling

As a new T-Mobile (US) customer, I was told by customer service that my $30 data unlimited plan gets down/up speeds throttled once data usage exceeds 5gig within the billing cycle. This was said after I lost data service as a result of my device having been identified as a Nexus S and the account had been originally and incorrectly provisioned as a Smartphone by the agent setting up my account and SIM on the 16th.
Interesting...

dont quite understand what your getting at, but if you did go over your 5gig soft data cap then there aint much you can do
You've used 5 gigs of since the 16th on your phone?
On the G2 forums, they've developed a way to defeat the throttle.
However it has it's own drawbacks, and may not work on our phone due to changes in Gingerbread and/or just general differences in software.
Once more, this may not work on our phones but may give interested parties/developers a place to start.

I got throttled on my Nexus One last month. I was tethering, but not doing torrents or movies or anything like that...I'm not sure what happened, but in one day I got like 2-3gb downloaded on my laptop...never figured it out.
I got a text message saying I was throttled in speed until the end of the billing cycle. I never really noticed the throttling. I was getting 4Mb/s on speed tests before the throttle and 2.8-3.0Mb/s after. For normal use, this isn't a big deal.
Total usage last bill was 7gb. Never used that much before, usually hover around 3-4.

The ethics of cell carrier's throttling us

This thread is to discuss the ethics of the cell carriers throttling "unlimited" plans.
I was throttled last billing cycle at 3GB on AT&T.
My download speed (as tested) was 300KB download and 1000K (unchanged) upload.
AT&T can bite my ass... I signed up for an unlimited internet contract and paid my bill every month for years. Now they F*** me by slowing me down to an unusable speed.
I was on the same boat I jumped to sprint but after a few weeks I couldn't stand the slow 3g at all it was like 300kbps almost all the time. I had a nexus 4g though but it would only connect to 4g about a quarter if the time. I was locked in to a contract by that time though and wanted out then I read that sprint was letting some people out because they changed their discount policy for family plans to only discount the fist line. That was my ticket out so I found a listing on craigslist of someone giving up their
Verizon account with two unlimited data lines and I hopped right on that. After some arguing with sprint rep they let me go etf free and I sold one iphone 4s that I bought for 200 for 475 on ebay lol. If I had known that this would happen I would have bought 2 iphones. Anyways I am much more satisfied with verizon the 3g is not as fast as att but at least they have a much better throttling policy I have yet to be throttled and my line gets an upgrade next month I know they don't throttle lte I think I'll get the sgs3 if big red gets it.

They keep lying to me about this and I am sick of it. They will undo this BS or a video is going up every day I see this BS.
I used 22GB last month and AT&T never did this to me. yet 12GB and bam 400-600kbs on 4G LTE. they are full of it
I read somewhere that if verizon sees that you are tethering illegally they will throttle you I'm not sure how that works or how long they will throttle you for though I know on my xperia play they redirected me to a site that tells me to buy a tethering plan until I used the correct settings for the wifi tether then I could tether but I didn't see any throttling though I didn't tether for more than a few minutes either I just wanted to test it

The term "tethering illegally" makes me cringe. I prefer "tethering without paying them for the privilege of using my data my way", but I realize that takes up far too much time to type.
It makes me realize how much throttling my unlimited plan after 3GB pisses me off.
Their argument for charging me extra for tethering is that "tethering consumes more data" which is clearly refuted by solid data in post #116 in this thread.
Even if I don't tether, they slam the brakes on after 3GB, for the entire rest of the billing period.
I am on AT&T too and I just used 22GB on the unlimited plan and my speeds were fine. With verizon, when they "throttle" they throttle and cut you off.
Since these companies are going after the "top 5%" it would be nice if those ppl got pissed an left them. That would put a ding in their wallet.
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk
They throttled you at 12gigs? I ran my meter up to 15gigs without any issues and have seen posts of people downloading far more without issue as well. An annoying example was of a person who proudly proclaimed he used his LTE connection to play XBL...

There are other news media reporting the same story, it will be interesting to see if AT&T will stick to their guns and continue throttling us. I realize there have been other threads discussing this topic but I felt this story deserves it's own thread.

I see them back in court soon, (them being AT&T).
Now they will throttle at 3GB which effectively renders the unlimited plan null and void and puts everyone with "unlimited" on the 3GB plan!

It is kinda bullsh*t that those of us with unlimited plans do get throttled (Though i have yet to breach my limit... don't often use that much data when i'm out and about)... but i think it's even worse that phone service providers charge extra for tethering. If you ask me, any data plan should come with SOME data allowance for tethering.... say.... if you have the 3GB data plan, maybe allow somewhere around 1-2GB of data that's ONLY for tethering alongside that 3GB mobile data allowance. So you'd have 3GB to use on the go if you're doing stuff on your phone, but have that little extra to use if you're doing something more bandwidth intensive that the phone itself isn't capable of, and you're not near a WiFi connection.
If you ask me... that would probably be the perfect way to please their customers. Hell... it'd make me a little happy. Although... then again... i don't really have any mobile devices BUT my phone... so possibly not.
I hate to be throttled and I've been throttled every month since it started, but really I don't think "unlimited data" guarantees the data has to be a certain minimum speed (real slow downs from network congestion or manufactured through throttling).
I can't quite remember where I read it, but somewhere I read that AT&T promised unlimited, not necessarily fast. (Not a viable excuse, just thought it was a funny thought ) I do wonder however how many people will try to follow with this and how 'out of hand' it may get. I wonder what it will push AT&T to do.

.... Generally... when you hear "Unlimited"... you don't think "Well, it'll become slower than hell if i go this far". That'd be like going to an all you can eat buffet, and they tell you that you can have all you want for the first 15 minutes you're there... but after that you have to wait 10 minutes in between each plate. At this point, there are only really two differences between the 3GB plan and the "Unlimited" plan. Those being that the unlimited plan doesn't get charged for going over 3GB but supposedly goes so ungodly slow after being throttled that it's hardly worth using.... and that the 3GB plan may be charged extra per GB... but at least they can probably use it without being throttled.

I see the point you are trying to make but if it is throttled to the point that it makes using the Internet pointless then it's really no longer a Data Plan.
I would be interested in seeing what information he provided to make his case. I've had an unlimited plan for a few years and this month was the 1st time I got a txt saying I was over 3gb of data. I guess I got thorrtled, but my radio seems to keep me slow the way it is
Actually, once I got the txt, I was a Tad faster.
Yeah it BULL , at&t took my unlimited data plan away cuz i tethered three times to send one email, so i escalated to and asistant call center manager that put it back, at&t is a bunch of deucshe bags, they no how to treat there loyal customers dont they if i could do something about this i would it pisses me off enough too. I WILL SAY THIS ... I NOW AM GOING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AT&T COMPLETELY, I WILL RIP THEM OFF AND TREAT THEM AS THEY HAVE TREATED ME AND THE REST OF YOU. YOU WANNA CAP MY DATA AND MAKE IT INSIGNIFICANT TO HAVE IT AT&T? HUH? WELL WATCH AS YOU PAY FOR MY DATA PLAN EVERY MONTH, I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE OR ILL JUST GET AN LTE PHONE AND COMPLAIN AND NEVER DO A THING THAT I HAVE TALKED ABOUT IN THIS RIDICULOUS COMMENT> BUT IT SURE PISSES ME OFF

You are correct, Discounts will no longer happen on new plans.
Update***
I went by the my local verizon store and the new plan is 22gb shared for all lines and not 22gigs per line. You also get 10 gig for your hotpspot shared. #FinePrint #VerizonFail
If it was 22gigs per line I would switch today but to get that it would $100 per line.
One side note: Because I'm on the grandfathered plan, phone upgrades were never possible. The system now lets me do a payment plan on all phones. They tried this on a pixel XL in the system and everything went through with no issues.
Hope it helps!

The 22 gigs isn't a soft cap, they just might throttle you if the network is congested in your area. I don't see them doing it often though since they don't on legacy UDP users and AT&T says the same thing on their UDP (for DirecTV customers) and I've seen people on that plan use over 50GBs without throttling on that plan. Verizon usually mirrors AT&T plans/policies, which is why I think that's relevant.
I don't think Verizon reps are very reliable either, as I've asked different reps the same question several times before and got different answers on technical things like this before. I would ask another one or two more on the phone or in store and you'll see how useless they are.

I have the exact same question!
I hate to make this move after struggling for years to keep grandfathered UDP. The only downside I see is that currently we wouldn't be throttled above 22 GB, but with the new plan, we could be. If that is the only downside (even after losing company discount), it is so worth it to save $50/month in my case.
I did ask Verizon and they said I'm not losing anything by making the switch, but I don't exactly trust them.
How can we determine for sure?

If that is the only downside (even after losing company discount), it is so worth it to save $50/month in my case.
I did ask Verizon and they said I'm not losing anything by making the switch, but I don't exactly trust them.
How can we determine for sure?

I switched the day it came out. I'm currently at 30GB for the month and haven't noticed any throttling yet, and I've been steaming a lot and watching quite a bit of YouTube. I've been running speed tests to check randomly. They said throttling or being prioritized on the network might happen to the top 3% I believe. It probably all depends on your location as far as any of the fine print goes. It's a leap of faith, but worth it in the long run I'd imagine unless you need peak speeds at all times. Which most people probably don't.
T-Mobile is still the best deal with the best price. $70 1 line, $100 for 2 lines full HD 1080p streaming (VZW is 720p) 10gb HotSpot 28gb before de-prioritization (VZW 22gb). It's the 2 line deal thats the no brainer.

Yeah as long as you live in a larger city where they actually have coverage. I get 110mbps download speeds at my house in the middle of nowhere with Verizon. T-Mobile barely has 3G and no building penetration back here. Pass.

Stupid question regarding building penetration - I live in Atlanta where the coverage is great except for my condo. If I was in the middle of the building, I'd expect crappy signal due to concrete structure, etc; however, with floor to ceiling windows and being very close to them, why would I still get crappy signal?
I've never pulled 110 mbps down - that is nice! What am I doing wrong?

Well I don't live in a big city. I live in a rural area 40 miles south of Philly and about 60 miles north of Baltimore. I get 80-90mbps . The thinking of T-Mobile having only coverage in big cities hasn't held true for well over a year or 2 now. Plus, I doubt you're truly in the middle of nowhere if you're getting 110mbps. That would mean you would have a cell tower on your property basically.
You get up to 22 gigs then it slows down. But if people in your area are not crowding the towers you should be good

My question is: for anyone who tethers on the grandfathered unlimited data plan without paying extra because you have an unlocked nexus 6p, will verizon be able to detect the 10GB of tethering if you switch to the new Unlimited plan, even if you didn't buy your phone from verizon (ie no software to detect tethering to force you to pay more, as would happen on grandfathered unlimited data)?
