Verizon's new "Unlimited" plan, the Moto X, tethering, and you. - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With the Moto X Pure Edition/Style not requiring hotspot tethering provisioning, how does Verizon measure the 10 GB of tethering data? Is there a ping back to Verizon notifying them of tethering activity, or are these phones essentially able to tether unlimited??

I've been wondering this also. And if stock does NOT get around the 10gb threshold, can/will custom roms be able to? I'm on Verizon right now, still on a grandfathered unlimited plan, so right now i can tether all I want.

Wondering also
I've been wondering this also .. I think they won't be able to monitor the tethering usage.. I will find out in a month and if they can't I might add the Pure as a 20 dollar add on when I get a new phone to use as a hotspot for home..

I'm thinking if your provisioning is off on the custom rom they can't track it. When i was on unlimited before, they blocked the hotspot through the provisioning. I had to bypass it in the build.prop.

I am very interested in this info as well, I'm on an ancient plan from Alltel that has unlimited data. The only problem I am running into is I need to add a line or two and can't. I'd consider the new unlimited plans if I could still tether unlimited with my MXP.

Working on TW, should work on VZW postpaid
I can't speak for Verizon postpaid, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that tethering works on Total Wireless with the stock Rom. This is the first phone I've ever used that had tethering working properly out-of-the-box on the stock Rom.

That I have. This is the first time in nearly ten years that the opportunity to use a functional stock Rom has presented itself. I don't know if Lenovo is going to keep returning the favor, but even the stock Android M Rom is pretty solid so far. It'll have to pass my uptime test first though to know for sure.

Our Telecome Company can monitor Data throu tethering too ..i had 2GB PLAN With unlimited YouTube usage but if i use tethering and use YouTube on another device they took from the 2GB

Now that it has been a full month can anyone confirm this? If I can tether all I want on the MXP under new Verizon unlimited I might part ways with my granfathered udp simply because of pricing.

I'm at about 20gb and don't reset for a week. I haven't tethered this month at all, but I'm curious what will happen when I hit 22gb and attempt to tether. Will I get 3G or 4 G speeds? I'll find out this week...

28 GB of data used MetroPCS and no issues ?.

"Unlimited" tethering on the MXPE + VZW!

I wanted to follow up on this thread. I am able to tether successfully, however my tethered usage is still classified as "hot spot data". Are you guys still successfully hiding your tether usage on Verizon's new unlimited data plan? What, if any, modifications have you done to your mxpe to achieve this? I am rooted on stock firmware and have tried adding net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to the build file, adding the dun=0 through the adb shell, VPN's, and FoxFi and nothing seems to hide my tethered usage. Are you using your wifi hotspot or USB tethering? Thanks.

Its tracked by Verizon. Trust me ive seen it happen to me, on x1575 and with a pixel phone. I'm on Verizon unlimited and use the tether when I'm on the road. I can tell when they throttle me back.

It there still unlimited tethering on TW as of this date ? I am looking for a new prepaid plan
Thanks

Total Wireless lacks unlimited data plans, so there's no "unlimited" tethering, but there is no additional limitation beyond the standard data cap while tethering.

I know that tethered usage is tracked, that is the reason I am following up on this post. Most of the posts prior to this were all people who sounded like they were successfully getting around Verizon tracking their tethering usage. I wanted to see if any of them are still successful at getting around the tethering tracking. I will ask again...is anyone who posted here previously still able to use tethering without data cap limitations? And if so, what is your setup to do this? Thanks.

I can confirm my Grandfathered Unlimited Data plan is still unlimited lol

*Wireless Tether App for Android Gets Banned by Carriers*

not sure if this has been posted:
http://pocketnow.com/android/wireless-tether-app-for-android-gets-banned-by-carriers
In Android, there are several different ways to tether, both officially (through an app that comes on the device for which you must pay to use), and unofficially (on unlocked and rooted devices). The carriers obviously want you to pay a monthly tethering fee, which often comes in at around $20 for 2GB. For years, this has been protested by some subscribers who contend that since they're already paying for a data plan, it should be up to them, and not the carrier, to determine how the data is used.
Many recent smartphones come with a carrier-sanctioned Mobile Hotspot app that only works if you've paid that extra fee to add tethering to your data plan. If your device is unlocked or rooted, you can use the built-in tethering function found in Android 2.2 and 2.3 settings. More commonly, rooted users use the free Wireless Tether app for Android, which does a great job at sharing your device's connection with a variety of devices.
The days of the Wireless Tether app might over, though. Carriers have begun blocking the app, even if you're rooted. We've checked for the app on a Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint device, and it's not available on the former two. However, on an unlocked Sony Ericsson device without a SIM card, the app is available. After inserting an AT&T SIM card into the phone, the app disappears.

Don't you have to he rooted to use the app? And, if you're rooted and running 2.2+ isn't native tethering available? Seems like a moot point to block the app... go sprint btw, they really seem to be embracing android and this whole phone freedom philosophy with this and their unofficial policy on rooted phones.
Tapa tapa tapa
Im really starting to believe more each day that I made the right choice by dumping verizon and going to sprint. I do not regret it.

Does this really surprise anyone from the carriers that limit or throttle?
Also there is a very simple rule to think about.
If there is a way to lock it, there is a way to unlock it.
What would stop someone from side loading the app? There are places other than the almighty android market to procure such tethering apps. AT&T likes to block side loading, but I thought you could just use ADB to push files anyways.

Nothing... you can still side load it or download it via wifi.
Regardless of workarounds, at the end of the day it is the idea behind the 'restrictions.' Or attempted ones, at that. It's the principle. It's the evil, at it's base, regardless of avoidance.

In the case of ATT, they remove the option from settings to allow apps from unknown sources. So you cannot side load apps unless you root the phone.
Just a thought.
Would you rather have throttled data after so many gigs and free tethering, or paid tethering and never throttle?
I'd pick throttle after so many gigs.

I believe this to be a false choice.
From June through September of 2010, I self-righteously scoffed at those who "Tethered for free" using any of the workarounds to Sprint's $30.00/month Hotspot. I paid the $30,00 each month while naively waiting for Sprint to fix the 50% through-speed issue.
The open CTMS ticket xxxxxxxx-100817, to address the throttled through-speeds has become a long running joke.
I would indeed love the option to purchase an unthrottled, tethered 4G connection for my laptop, but I will not pay for something that Sprint and Clear have no intention of delivering.
Actually using Wireless Teather from my Evo on my laptop right now.
am I missing something
The way I see it is I pay for 4G on Sprint's network, however I do not have 4G in my area, I don't complain about that, so why is sprint complaining? are they saying were ripping them off.. because we use a free app to get service we already pay for?

Well, with Sprints new policy on any smartphone, everyone that gets any Android (4g or not), Blackberry, etc. are now paying the $10 premium data charge.
Also, it is amazing to me how providers think they have a right to tell people what they can and cannot do with a device that they own. I am just saying, this is like Comcast telling someone they can't install a program on their computer because they are using their internet connection.

AT&T still offer the unlimited data for non-smartphones. That's why it says standard phones.
To use that plan you have to use a phone that isn't recognized by AT&T.

2) Sign up for the dumbphone unlimited data plan.
3) Buy a phone from this list unlocked and off contract.http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446373
4) Swap out the sim card.
5) Congratz, you now have a smartphone with unlimited data for $15/month.

I use unlimited data on my Lumia 900. I did not include prices because I get a corporate discount and the prices would not be applicable to a lot of people. Right now though I am on an unlimited plan that costs $30 month. It was a no brainer. The 3GB plan also costs $30 a month. Tho only other "cheap" data plan was a 300MB plan for $20. $10 more gets you unlimited. Easy choice.

Interesting. I have no option for a 200MB plan. Maybe it's because my phone is an LTE phone or you had that plan "grandfathered."
I have an option for unlimited data and 200 texts for $35. My understanding is stand alone 200 texts is no longer offered. I also thought 200MB data didn't exist, but I guess it does for some people.

Yes we are. Whether they throttle or not after 5gb is immaterial to me. My "unlimited" plan costs the same as a 3GB and I allegedly get up to 5GB of non throttled LTE data. I haven't seen a better deal out there.
I doubt I will go over 3GB on any kind of regular basis, but if it costs the same as a 3GB plan why not? If att wanted to ease congestion on its network it would offer more data plans between 300MB and 3GB. It is effectively forcing people to get the 3GB or unlimited plan. And of course once people have 3GB or unlimited they feel inclined to use it.
.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
Sounds like a good plan before they started monitoring users data so close, I am grandfathered in with unlimited data and have been tethering to my ipod for over a year, and in the last week or so I have got many messages from At&t saying they are going to auto upgrade my data plan. So with this being said I think if you’re using a ton of data with a Dumbphone they will notice.

Corporate data plan

I went to the Verizon site to check out my upgrade options, and it looks like I will be better off with my unlimited corporate data plan at $45/month, than most of the personal data plans. Maybe you should get on a corporate data plan too!

Is your $30 plan for the unlimited LTE a personal or corporate plan? I use Good for Enterprise (app), and Verizon will not allow a personal data plan with that.
I hate it when GSM phones (AT&T) cause interference in nearby speakers. That's one main reason I went to a CDMA network (Verizon).

Mine is a personal unlimited LTE data plan. No one I know has ever found a need for Enterprise data. There are a lot of stories on the web of people being told they need Enterprise Data by at&t and discovering their mail service works just fine even without it.

There are no differences between the two data plans as far as functionality. Technically, the rep is supposed to ask if you will be using it for enterprise or business and charge you the $45 instead of $30. This is the same deal with all smartphones at AT&T. Blackberry is the only exception where you actually do have to have the $45 plan to connect to BES. You can use all the features and functionality of exchange without the $45 plan without worry. Only suckers pay $45.

Link.
Don't know how true that is.
It would be interesting to test good out on a personal data plan and see if it still works. $15 a month is a lot if you don't need to spend it.
I can confirm that if you use a personal data plan on Verizon for the Good for Enterprise app, it (Good) will stop working in about 24 hours.
Been there
My account had to be converted.
IIRC, Verizon puts some kind of identifier or tag on your account that indicates you are using Good.
I think it is called "Corporate PDA" when you click on "View all features and services" on VZW.
It's a separate tag from "Unlimited Corporate Email & Web for Smartphones".
Sent from my unrooted DroidX using Tapatalk
So the punch line question would be: can Verizon tell whether you're actually using The Good app, or are you just saying you are?
I think Verizon has found a way to tap into making extra money from anyone using their device for corporate work. They will not let a lucrative opportunity pass them by. To them, not all data was created equal; some are more expensive than others. Lol!

you bought the phone from google, but you are using tmobiles network. you agreed to their to rules by paying for their services and by using their simcard on their network. they see everything going through their network. they have a right to do as they wish with their network. they know you by your imei number on their network. if i bought a car in ohio, but am driving it in new york, i still have to follow new yorks traffic laws or i can get fined/arrested/have my licence revoked.
Sounds right
Here's what happened to me when I was testing tethering. I am on the $30 100 min prepaid plan. I tethered my laptop by the CM10 native WIFI hotspot. All was well. I even used it for an hour or so to make sure I could do everything I might need. Then I tried the built in USB tether. First time I tried to use Firefox, I immediately got the invitation to add tethering to my plan. Went back to WIFI, same message.
I thought, great, now in an emergency I may not be able to use this. But - put the SIM in a different phone - no messages, tether worked fine. So I think you are right, they tie the detection to the IMEI number, not the SIM or account.

Disabling the tether and re-enabling did not work for me. I was tethering LTE, second phone was not LTE capable, if that might be handled differently??

Yeah, I understand that. I'm starting to get a little concerned, but I really haven't had anything happen except two or three times I've been re-routed to the page that says I have no tethering plan or I'm over my data. If I start getting threatening calls or messages from them, then I'll deal with it, but so far I haven't had any real issues except the minor annoyance of having to disable/re-enable the tethering. Once or twice I've had to reboot my phone, too, because the speed got painfully slow. Honestly, though, for the price I pay and being able to use it in the place of a land-line isp, even if I have to deal with that occasionally for life I'm ok with it lol

Hello,
Correct me if I'm wrong. You tethered 16-30gb per month using circumvention, got tired of User Agent games, then you surrendered and went with a legit T-Mobile plan that STILL LETS YOU TETHER 16-30GB/MONTH?? I need to know! lol
The way you worded it gives this impression.

Carrier Lockdown on features (First example: Verizon Hotspot)

What carriers have somehow locked down features on your Nexus 5X?
Over here on Verizon, I've already noticed the hotspot is locked via this message (after a quick dialog that says "checking subscription").

My girlfriend and I both purchased the 5X on the same order and her T-mobile SIM carded 5X works as designed for the hotspot.
So much for a "pure Android" experience!

Pure Android checks with your carrier before turning on the hotspot. It sucks that Verizon still requires a separate subscription, but that's not Google's fault. You can root your phone and get around that - there have been some posts on here already about it.

What plan do you have? Are you still on unlimited data?
I am on a Verizon plan with my family and we all share 10GB/mo. I just tried to activate the hotspot, it said "checking subscription", and then it activated without any issues.
Thanks for replies.
I am still on the unlimited data plan, so perhaps that is the issue.
I was hoping that this phone would be one that I didn't have to go with a workaround for basic features like that, but I will definitely go that route.
Luckily nexus phones are a bit more open than the other phones available through Verizon!
I'm also on unlimited data plan from Verizon, but I don't have my 5x yet to test this but I did come across this thread, hopefully it will work it seems people have been having mixed results.

Thanks for the info. My 5X is being delivered today and I'm still on UDP with Verizon. I'll give this a try. I will likely unlock the bootloader, flash modified boot.img, TWRP, and root before I setup anything (will probably take any OTAs first though). I'll try the ADB method followed by modified build.prop if necessary.
Mine had to check with ATT to see that I had Hotspot enabled.

It is partly Google's fault since they bothered to include the check at all. The Nexus 5 didn't do that at all.

Looking through My Verizon (on one of the newer 20GB/mo family plans), I don't see any reference to "Mobile Hotspot" anywhere. I can't add/remove it in "Manage Products/Apps", so maybe they don't charge for it anymore? (I thought they couldn't charge for 4G hotspot anyway...?)

It's standard in the new plans. See #2 -http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/mobile-hotspot-faqs/
No free hotspot on Sprint. Which doesn't surprise me.

Hey everyone, I can confirm tether works for Verizon on Nexus 6P and Moto X Pure with the same sim, but Nexus 5X asks for subscription. I popped my sim in each and tried them.

Read my post. It appears it's only on the LG Nexus. All other unlocked phones work fine.

that got me up and running
I was kind of worried about this when I ordered the phone. I have an AT&T plan that says it doesn't include the hot spot feature. AT&T says I have to get at least the 5GB/month play and I only have the 3GB/month plan. However, when I try and turn on the hot spot I get "Checking subscription status. Please wait..." and then a second later the hot spot turns on and works just fine.
