I just got a text from t mobile that says hotspot has been blocked . Has anyone else got this email. My n4 was brought from Google so would they even be able to block it ?

They monitor useragent strings. I got texts saying that they might block me then they blocked access to Internet Explorer (but nothing else) but I just called and they changed me to Simple Choice since it was the same price as the Value Plan I was on.

you bought the phone from google, but you are using tmobiles network. you agreed to their to rules by paying for their services and by using their simcard on their network. they see everything going through their network. they have a right to do as they wish with their network. they know you by your imei number on their network. if i bought a car in ohio, but am driving it in new york, i still have to follow new yorks traffic laws or i can get fined/arrested/have my licence revoked.

Here's what happened to me when I was testing tethering. I am on the $30 100 min prepaid plan. I tethered my laptop by the CM10 native WIFI hotspot. All was well. I even used it for an hour or so to make sure I could do everything I might need. Then I tried the built in USB tether. First time I tried to use Firefox, I immediately got the invitation to add tethering to my plan. Went back to WIFI, same message.
I thought, great, now in an emergency I may not be able to use this. But - put the SIM in a different phone - no messages, tether worked fine. So I think you are right, they tie the detection to the IMEI number, not the SIM or account.

This keeps being reported, and I've seen the page as well. I have yet to be permanently blocked, though. I'm using paranoid 3.65 (july 10) and native wifi hotspot. All I have to do is disable the hotspot & re-enable it, then I'm back in
Disabling the tether and re-enabling did not work for me. I was tethering LTE, second phone was not LTE capable, if that might be handled differently??

if you are using a custom rom, that includes the latest dalvik commits, then your phone is calculating the data used wrong, this is a known issue. i didnt use 28.57gb in a week. check with tmobiles website to get your accurate usage(if you didnt)..

Yes, occasionally, because I get faster speeds if I do When I use a usb connection I use easytether (paid version), because it stays enabled through a reboot and it works with ubuntu.

wasnt doubting you(really), i just wanted you to be aware that there is that issue, to inform you in case. many dont know and are freaking out that they used more than their allowed data.
for years i tethered without paying and tmobile doing anything. i used to average about 16-30gb data used per month. the year two januarys ago, they finally stopped me, and i played the changing the user agent game. torwards the end of last year, i got tired of the game, and ended up purchasing a tethering plan. i tell you what, its nice not worrying about it anymore

Yeah, I understand that. I'm starting to get a little concerned, but I really haven't had anything happen except two or three times I've been re-routed to the page that says I have no tethering plan or I'm over my data. If I start getting threatening calls or messages from them, then I'll deal with it, but so far I haven't had any real issues except the minor annoyance of having to disable/re-enable the tethering. Once or twice I've had to reboot my phone, too, because the speed got painfully slow. Honestly, though, for the price I pay and being able to use it in the place of a land-line isp, even if I have to deal with that occasionally for life I'm ok with it lol

Hey guys i was on twitter and i saw this, basically T-mobile is capping us at 5gb a month of data, and if we exceed this monthly they will slow down our internet speeds to make sure users experience fast speeds all around. Each month is a fresh slate, what does everyone think of this?

Personally I don't think its that huge of a deal. I mean really, how many people will use over 5GB of data? I use my HD2 constantly, and barely use more than 1GB a month. And its not like they are making us pay for going over that 5GB, the speed just drops a little bit...so all around its not that bad.
i agree too, i just checked my statements and i used around 250mb so i couldn't imagine using 5gb a month either. I wonder what the data speeds will be for those who have gone over 5gb?
I think this is also a way to enforce the lack of tmousa built in wifi tethering.

tmobile left out wifi tethering from there stock roms on purpose, they do not want us using their network for other mobile devices. The only way i was able to use wifi tethering was by installing a cab or custom rom. I think we can agree those who use wifi tethering regularly on their phones use much more data monthly, therefore by tmobile imposing this it will act as a cutoff for those using it.

I exceed 5gb a month but i tether with it all the time, also the HD2 comes already tether ready, just plug it in the computer and select Internet sharing.

well when i went over they sent me a text message saaying i already exeeded my data for the month and my speeds will be reduced. when i first went over i couldnt play youtube and the webites would take a while to load but it aint that bad for me idk if thats the case with anyone else. i use my hd2 to tether alot since i go to school and download a few things here n there.
I read in another post post (op said he works for tmo) that the speed will drop to normal edge connection once you reach the 5 gb cap.

My buddy broke this cap several times using his g1 and later his click when tethering. He would get the text from t mobile, and his speeds dropped to 50kbps (dial up speeds)

they should get rid of this rule, i used the teather feture for internet use on my computer, once you go over the speed dropps significatly, i can bearly use my internet on my phone waiting about 2-3 mins or longer for a page to load

Yeah i have noticed the same thing, i tether on occasion. however about 2 months ago i tethered ALL the time just trying to hit that cap to see what would happen and when the bill came i just barely got there about 4.5gb of usage.
Mind you this was doing just about everything high bandwidth i could think of on purpose, tons of youtube videos, etc. the only way i can think of to quickly hit that would be torrenting. if you are torrenting on your cellphone then you deserve to be cut off. Aside from all the data transfer, torrents broadcast tons of smaller packets to many many clients, that has gotta reek havoc with a cellular infrastructure
If youre gona torrent use your land based broadband or your neighbors open wifi, youre a fool if you think somehow they arent going to be able to track you down by your cell phone's IP

I watch youtube, visit forums, and download tweaks from xda.
I doubt you guys are trying as hard as you claim to max out your gigz.
I use this phone to surf the net because holding a sleeping baby does not work sitting in front of a conventional p.c. or laptop.
They like to be walked around, and will awaken if you stop or sit down...
This is the best way to surf...well used to be.

walking a sleeping baby... sounds like youre at home, so why not use wifi? it would likely be faster than 3g, and prob save your battery some too, since wifi at most transmits a quarter watt, vs a cellular radio broadcasting a watt or more. If you dont have a wifi AP, spend $50 on a new one, or you can probably pickup a used B access point from ebay for like $5 which would be more than adequate for the HD2

Don't you have to he rooted to use the app? And, if you're rooted and running 2.2+ isn't native tethering available? Seems like a moot point to block the app... go sprint btw, they really seem to be embracing android and this whole phone freedom philosophy with this and their unofficial policy on rooted phones.

What would stop someone from side loading the app? There are places other than the almighty android market to procure such tethering apps. AT&T likes to block side loading, but I thought you could just use ADB to push files anyways.

Nothing... you can still side load it or download it via wifi.
Regardless of workarounds, at the end of the day it is the idea behind the 'restrictions.' Or attempted ones, at that. It's the principle. It's the evil, at it's base, regardless of avoidance.

In the case of ATT, they remove the option from settings to allow apps from unknown sources. So you cannot side load apps unless you root the phone.
Just a thought.

I believe this to be a false choice.
From June through September of 2010, I self-righteously scoffed at those who "Tethered for free" using any of the workarounds to Sprint's $30.00/month Hotspot. I paid the $30,00 each month while naively waiting for Sprint to fix the 50% through-speed issue.
The open CTMS ticket xxxxxxxx-100817, to address the throttled through-speeds has become a long running joke.
I would indeed love the option to purchase an unthrottled, tethered 4G connection for my laptop, but I will not pay for something that Sprint and Clear have no intention of delivering.
Actually using Wireless Teather from my Evo on my laptop right now.

Well, with Sprints new policy on any smartphone, everyone that gets any Android (4g or not), Blackberry, etc. are now paying the $10 premium data charge.
Also, it is amazing to me how providers think they have a right to tell people what they can and cannot do with a device that they own. I am just saying, this is like Comcast telling someone they can't install a program on their computer because they are using their internet connection.

Your using the network which they own. The phone may be yours but the infrastructure is not. They have every right to control or restrict the amount or rate at which use data on their network.

Be ware....It's not prepaid. If you run out of minutes they charge you like 90 dollars. Read the fine print. I had 30 dollars worth of data left I didn't even use switched to tmobile thinking prepaid is prepaid and they sent me a bill for 90 cancelation fee. Didn't even use my 30 worth of paid for data

It is perfect for the 3G GSM cellular modem in my laptop.
I am sick of not having internet access in some places and as I won't ever be using voice or giving out that number it is just perfect and a deal!

hey everyone. so apparently mobile to mobile doesnt apply to monthly 4g plans. i never read this anywhere and i tried to do as much research as i could before i tired to get on this plan. but now, after 1 day of ussage, im out of minutes.
if you guys have any specific questions, post them, and ill try to answer them
Fact: I found that I had to buy a $30 t-mo phone at walmart to get this plan, and after activation, I moved the sim to a nicer device (bought a nearly unused lg g2x for cheap). I don't talk on the phone, google voice when I do (voice messages conveniently converted to text) and never give out my t-mo phone #.
History: I have been using boost for a couple years and was happy with their service/plan, but even the rather nice samy prevail (thank you ShabbyPenguin!!) was feeling a bit limited (despite root and link2sd). Was about to try Hoarks CM7 on it. I did not feel like trying to get a regular sprint phone to work on boost either.
Review: Signal strength not as good at home, but I use wifi here anyways. I get about 2Mb data over cell here tho, so not too bad. Phone is a kickass upgrade (CWM, CM7 nightly thanks to XDA forums tutorials!) and I like that I can use my sim in many other devices!
Expect to pay $30 for a phone and $30 for plan. Web activation of phone worked. Be sure to use THE AGENT CODE on the phone box! I bought the $30 card but using the scratch and dust number did not validate online , I called tmobile number and entered it there and it validated (whew!).

Is the agent code unique? If not, can you share it?
I just ordered the SIM on T-Mobile's website (ended up getting it as an addition to my postpaid plan for my NS which was sitting unused). I followed the activation steps in the booklet that came with the SIM. No agent code needed and I paid $5.34 for the SIM.
NOTE: This only works if you already have a compatible phone with AWS bands. I don't know about activating a newly bought phone on this plan.

Q: Is there any Android/ICS international phone I can buy that can be hacked to work with Tmobile HSPA+? I'd say the HTC One S would be perfect for me, but I don't think you can get the one with TMobile 1700 CDMA band.

Generally, no. Some hacking has been done on AT&T-branded phones (e.g. Galaxy Note) to get them to work with T-Mobile's 3G. However, most phones are incapable of this. Saying 1700 band is a bit misleading - as there are a couple 1700MHz bands that are not AWS (i.e. T-Mobile USA).
So far, all of the Nexus phones (GSM versions, excluding "a" variants which support AT&T's 3G) work with the AWS band. A few others like the Sensation and Evo 3D come to mind.
Your options will be limited because the AWS band is fairly unpopular. Most manufacturers don't bother with it as it's used only on the less-popular networks of the U.S. and Canada - nowhere else.

I am relocating to N.Y. from Europe for work and i am bringing my Galaxy Note with me of course.
I was not aware of the situation in U.S. with phone carriers and I am only beginning to grasp the things you have to suffer.
Could you please recommend me a plan. I have already contacted sprint and they refused to accept my cell phone. I am currently thinking of getting boost mobile unlimited but i can't find out if my phone is fully compatible with their service.
I have no credit history in U.S.. I would like at least 200' 100sms and a few GBs of data. Some minutes for calling landlines in Europe would also be great.
I would realy appreciate your help, feeling kind of lost in the open sea.

Your Note will only give you 3G on AT&T or AT&T MVNOs. You will only get Edge at best on TMo, and your phone won't work at all on Verizon or Sprint!

The phone works great on AT&T with some pretty good speeds.
As foxmeister said ur only option to use full data is with ATT.
The best thing here is to get a prepaid 50 $ unlimited plan. It comes with unlimited everything. Including data.
However if u have a smart phone then u need another data plan. However ATT is never going to know u have a smartphone since the imei of european phones is not their list.
Many people here are using non smartphone data plan with note with no issues.
However if u want a contract, then again get an iphone 4gs with att and sell the phone and use ur phone with that plan.
Since u dont have a credit history here, ATT will ask u to put in a 1000$ deposit, which they will refund u at the end of the 1st year.

Just don't expect much with AT&T in NY, they kinda suck. Lots of dead zones and dropped calls. I have an unlimited data plan with them but on Friday they told me that since I'm in the top 5% of data users they're going to slow down my connection.

I am sure they will catch you if u use too much data.. may be like over 10gb every month.
U dont have to carry the phone with u.
Good thing about prepaid is that u can always stop using it without loosing much money.
I would consider prepaid as a temporary measure before u understand the coverage and stuff like that..
I think walmart has a plan .. again 50$ unlimited with no carrier specifcation.

That's standard HSPA data speeds. You'll see the DL speed go up to 11mb some nights depending on your area.

I am in NY. i don't have issue with it. I got around 1.3-1.8M download speed. no dead zones for me.. where are you in New York ?

I average about 3GB's a month and my high was 6.4GB in Oct.
I am on wifi most of the time and I don't use a ton of talk minutes, so I am using an AT&T GoPhone smartphone plan, $25.00/month for 500MB of data, $0.10 per talk minute.

I'm in NYC. Live downtown work in midtown. I have dropped calls all the time and need to reboot my iphone a couple of times a day. I also spend a lot of time upstate (Catskills) and have little to no service up there with AT&T. And they've told me they have no plans to add cell towers.
Hey guys thanks for all the tips. I have been using AT&T gophone unlimited for 10 days. I don't do heavy internet usage but i can say that the data network is speedy and stable in Manhattan. I am not so satisfied with voice call quality and I have some dropped calls or phone takes for ages to connect.
Overall thanks for the help. AT&T worked out of the box and I almost make full use of the device. A strange difference from Europe is that in US data actually works better than voice.

With the Moto X Pure Edition/Style not requiring hotspot tethering provisioning, how does Verizon measure the 10 GB of tethering data? Is there a ping back to Verizon notifying them of tethering activity, or are these phones essentially able to tether unlimited??
I've been wondering this also. And if stock does NOT get around the 10gb threshold, can/will custom roms be able to? I'm on Verizon right now, still on a grandfathered unlimited plan, so right now i can tether all I want.

I've been wondering this also .. I think they won't be able to monitor the tethering usage.. I will find out in a month and if they can't I might add the Pure as a 20 dollar add on when I get a new phone to use as a hotspot for home..
I'm thinking if your provisioning is off on the custom rom they can't track it. When i was on unlimited before, they blocked the hotspot through the provisioning. I had to bypass it in the build.prop.
I am very interested in this info as well, I'm on an ancient plan from Alltel that has unlimited data. The only problem I am running into is I need to add a line or two and can't. I'd consider the new unlimited plans if I could still tether unlimited with my MXP.

I can't speak for Verizon postpaid, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that tethering works on Total Wireless with the stock Rom. This is the first phone I've ever used that had tethering working properly out-of-the-box on the stock Rom.

That I have. This is the first time in nearly ten years that the opportunity to use a functional stock Rom has presented itself. I don't know if Lenovo is going to keep returning the favor, but even the stock Android M Rom is pretty solid so far. It'll have to pass my uptime test first though to know for sure.

I'm at about 20gb and don't reset for a week. I haven't tethered this month at all, but I'm curious what will happen when I hit 22gb and attempt to tether. Will I get 3G or 4 G speeds? I'll find out this week...

I'm at 24.2 GB this month (resets tomorrow) and tried tethering to the iPad. And I got 8 Mbps, which is about what I get normally on my phone at my house.

I wanted to follow up on this thread. I am able to tether successfully, however my tethered usage is still classified as "hot spot data". Are you guys still successfully hiding your tether usage on Verizon's new unlimited data plan? What, if any, modifications have you done to your mxpe to achieve this? I am rooted on stock firmware and have tried adding net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to the build file, adding the dun=0 through the adb shell, VPN's, and FoxFi and nothing seems to hide my tethered usage. Are you using your wifi hotspot or USB tethering? Thanks.
Its tracked by Verizon. Trust me ive seen it happen to me, on x1575 and with a pixel phone. I'm on Verizon unlimited and use the tether when I'm on the road. I can tell when they throttle me back.

Total Wireless lacks unlimited data plans, so there's no "unlimited" tethering, but there is no additional limitation beyond the standard data cap while tethering.

I know that tethered usage is tracked, that is the reason I am following up on this post. Most of the posts prior to this were all people who sounded like they were successfully getting around Verizon tracking their tethering usage. I wanted to see if any of them are still successful at getting around the tethering tracking. I will ask again...is anyone who posted here previously still able to use tethering without data cap limitations? And if so, what is your setup to do this? Thanks.
