i am currently using tmobile and thinking about switchign over to at&t. i have a quesiton about the data plan. i am aware that there is 2 types of data plans for at&t:
- 30 dollar data plan for pda phones
- 15 dollar data plan for regular phones
my question is, if i use the 15 dollar data plan, would the speeds be different? i.e.3g
is anyone here using the 15 dollar plan?
my cousin is currently using the 15 dollar data plan with his touch pro and he says he gets 3g/h, so i want to make sure before i choose the plan. thanks in advance
go with the $15 media net plan. i think the data plan is about the same as the media net plan anyways. just dont tell them that you have a smartphone or else you might be subjected to the $30 data plan.

i live in ohio.. and use att. been with em since they were cingular.. more than 10 years... i got the x1 as soon as it came out... and i only pay 15.. and get blazin fast internet when i get the signal... i'm unfortunately out in the sticks most of the time.. but in the city and downtown.. great speeds...
trust me i am on the att $15 dollar plan now and it all works the same. i also have the x1i and it works fabulous, if you have the x1a works even better. like the previous post said, don't tell them you have a pda. although i did tell them they didn't make me go with the 30$ plan. if for any reason they are making you get the pda plan wich they shouldn't, just hang up and call back saying you don't have a pda just tell them whatever. make sure you find out your area is mostly 850 or 1900.
thanks a lot for the info guys. for those using it, does it stay as H or does it go to 3g or does it vary?
It really depends. I am in San Jose and I got H most of the time. My work area is bit weaker and I got E sometime. Screenshot from my thread:

jack is rite, i mean it really depends where you are. i get between H and E i never rarely get 3g or G, i know wierd. there are times that im in the exact same spot at work or home and i get different signals. i mean my arm on my chair same position to, staying in that position about 5 minutes doesn't change. but even tho it's an e im still not complaining it works just as good.
I'm in NYC, and i pay 15 bucks, get great speeds. I have the X1i....no complaints at all.

I have both t-mobile and verizon. I've been considering ditching verizon. But, i'd like to know if I could still use the droid x just on wifi or if I'm gonna have to sell it. I bought it ten months ago. I'd like to keep it as a dev device, but just without phone access.

You can still use most apps that allow wifi connection for a data source (almost all).
Wirrless tether would no longer work without 3g service... That is the only major catch I can think of

You could just ignore it. Theres always a way to skip all those start up screens.
You MIGHT be able to "activate" it. It would eventually tell you that there is no service registered to this device etc etc.
I THINK that's how it works, but I could be dead wrong, might want to call cs and ask what happens if you try to activate a phone out of service.
Either way, you won't be billed. I think my activation screen allowed me to skip it.

WHY would anyone pay for Verizon's service! I flashed my X to Cricket and never turned back, (end rant lol ). You can still use the WiFi feature after you get past the Activation screen.

You can also use Page Plus. For as little as $30 per year, you could have phone service on it and use it as a backup phone as well as a really cool toy.

Never dropping a call and data speed that makes AT&T/iPhone fanbois wet their bed's at night.
Ditch T-Mobile, they just did a massive TV campaign advertising a 4G network when they don't even have one. They are just enhancing their current 3G network which by now is equivalent to verizon's 4G LTE.
It sounds like you're saying that T-Mobile's 21Mbps service isn't 4G while Verizon's 10Mbps service is. Technically speaking, neither fit the 4G standard; however, both are marketing their high-speed networks as such.
Verizon is too expensive for me. The DroidX does not do simultaneous voice and data--something I need everyday for my job.
T-Mobile has great coverage in my area. They're much more affordable than Verizon. Their network is faster than Verizon's. Unless you can convince me to go to a slower network with less functionality at a higher price, my Verizon account will remain closed.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Whoever thinks verizon 3g is better than at&t either lives in a low at&t recwption area or blowing smoke. At&t and tmobile are both faster than any cdma network, especially now with the hspa+ upgrades which also speed up other 3g devices. Its not even close.

Just received this letter from Sprint today. Has anyone else received this letter before?
I'm pretty sure you don't get unlimited roaming data. That's why they sent you that.
From cellblock D
It starts off by talking about a mobile broadband card. It's basically saying you're excessively roaming with it. There is a 5gb a month limit for cards and officially tethered phones. Put the phone/card into home only (no roaming) and if there's a setting, uncheck allow roaming data.
You don't get unlimited roaming....

I received one about a year ago. Theses are the 2 main rules
1. You must use more sprint data than roaming data.
2. You cannot voice call while roaming for more than 800 minutes.
As long as you follow this you won't have any problems.
Note if you find yourself roaming while at home call tech support and they will send you a free "airave" (its a portable cell tower that just needs a internet connection) it works great
Good luck

How long does your battery last???? 5, 10 minutes???
I got the same letter. And I don't roam at all. I talked to Sprint, and they told me that, despite what the commercials say, they no longer have a plan with truly unlimited data. They all cap at 5 GB, even the Simply Everything plan. So if I don't cut back on my data usage, on my data intensive HTC EVO 3D, they have the right to terminate my contract.
Very odd, as of last November they changed to completely unlimited as long as you weren't roaming so I was told for Hotspot because I used to have it. Roaming obviously they still could complain. It sounds to me like you are getting some uninformed people (or they went backwards). I had the lady read to me over the phone the new contract statements and how it was unlimited for 3G and 4G.

Always take what "Sprint" says with a grain of salt. Often their people aren't on the same page.
They do have unlimited data, and if you're getting a letter it's likely because whether you realize it or not, you're either roaming or tethering.

Your roaming Data is well within roaming limits, that's 36MB worth of roaming, you're fine. Anyone bashing you for these numbers isn't reading carefully.

AT&T still offer the unlimited data for non-smartphones. That's why it says standard phones.
To use that plan you have to use a phone that isn't recognized by AT&T.

Since when was the grandfather data plan $10? And I logged in myself and checked. The option is there for me. Like I said the reason every other category has no price, smartphone especially, is because unlimited data is only for standard phones. They've had that plan for a long time.

Ok, let me explain the loophole to you.
1) Buy a ultra-cheap dumbphone, like a motorola razr or something...
2) Sign up for the dumbphone unlimited data plan.
3) Buy a phone from this list unlocked and off contract.http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446373
4) Swap out the sim card.
5) Congratz, you now have a smartphone with unlimited data for $15/month.

I use unlimited data on my Lumia 900. I did not include prices because I get a corporate discount and the prices would not be applicable to a lot of people. Right now though I am on an unlimited plan that costs $30 month. It was a no brainer. The 3GB plan also costs $30 a month. Tho only other "cheap" data plan was a 300MB plan for $20. $10 more gets you unlimited. Easy choice.

Interesting. I have no option for a 200MB plan. Maybe it's because my phone is an LTE phone or you had that plan "grandfathered."
I have an option for unlimited data and 200 texts for $35. My understanding is stand alone 200 texts is no longer offered. I also thought 200MB data didn't exist, but I guess it does for some people.

Yes we are. Whether they throttle or not after 5gb is immaterial to me. My "unlimited" plan costs the same as a 3GB and I allegedly get up to 5GB of non throttled LTE data. I haven't seen a better deal out there.
I doubt I will go over 3GB on any kind of regular basis, but if it costs the same as a 3GB plan why not? If att wanted to ease congestion on its network it would offer more data plans between 300MB and 3GB. It is effectively forcing people to get the 3GB or unlimited plan. And of course once people have 3GB or unlimited they feel inclined to use it.
.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
Sounds like a good plan before they started monitoring users data so close, I am grandfathered in with unlimited data and have been tethering to my ipod for over a year, and in the last week or so I have got many messages from At&t saying they are going to auto upgrade my data plan. So with this being said I think if you’re using a ton of data with a Dumbphone they will notice.
With the Moto X Pure Edition/Style not requiring hotspot tethering provisioning, how does Verizon measure the 10 GB of tethering data? Is there a ping back to Verizon notifying them of tethering activity, or are these phones essentially able to tether unlimited??
I've been wondering this also. And if stock does NOT get around the 10gb threshold, can/will custom roms be able to? I'm on Verizon right now, still on a grandfathered unlimited plan, so right now i can tether all I want.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Wondering also
I've been wondering this also .. I think they won't be able to monitor the tethering usage.. I will find out in a month and if they can't I might add the Pure as a 20 dollar add on when I get a new phone to use as a hotspot for home..
I'm thinking if your provisioning is off on the custom rom they can't track it. When i was on unlimited before, they blocked the hotspot through the provisioning. I had to bypass it in the build.prop.
I am very interested in this info as well, I'm on an ancient plan from Alltel that has unlimited data. The only problem I am running into is I need to add a line or two and can't. I'd consider the new unlimited plans if I could still tether unlimited with my MXP.

"Unlimited" tethering on the MXPE + VZW!
I wanted to follow up on this thread. I am able to tether successfully, however my tethered usage is still classified as "hot spot data". Are you guys still successfully hiding your tether usage on Verizon's new unlimited data plan? What, if any, modifications have you done to your mxpe to achieve this? I am rooted on stock firmware and have tried adding net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to the build file, adding the dun=0 through the adb shell, VPN's, and FoxFi and nothing seems to hide my tethered usage. Are you using your wifi hotspot or USB tethering? Thanks.
Its tracked by Verizon. Trust me ive seen it happen to me, on x1575 and with a pixel phone. I'm on Verizon unlimited and use the tether when I'm on the road. I can tell when they throttle me back.

Total Wireless lacks unlimited data plans, so there's no "unlimited" tethering, but there is no additional limitation beyond the standard data cap while tethering.

I know that tethered usage is tracked, that is the reason I am following up on this post. Most of the posts prior to this were all people who sounded like they were successfully getting around Verizon tracking their tethering usage. I wanted to see if any of them are still successful at getting around the tethering tracking. I will ask again...is anyone who posted here previously still able to use tethering without data cap limitations? And if so, what is your setup to do this? Thanks.
I can confirm my Grandfathered Unlimited Data plan is still unlimited lol
