Any custom TW ROM Fails to install [Solved] - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

SOLVED! Edit end of the post.
Hello guys i'm having a weird problem,
I had installed the S6 Portc 5.0.1 for a almost a year without any problem but recently i had to go Stock NB1 for testing a SIM CARD Carrier that i was getting "Invalid SIM Card" and it was the same thing, no biggies, perphas that carrier is not compatible with this phone, i tried a couple of guide thinking my phone was not "full" unlocked and ended it up locking the phone instead, lol. Anyway, i managed to unlock it again, so i go ahead and try to update my TW to OK2 and now i can't? Any ROM that i flash trough FlashFire o SafeStrap fails at installing(FF: Hangs at booting, SS: it yells something like symlinks errors). Odin Stock install correctly and Update through to stock recovery like NB1 to NJ4 and so on installs good too.
What do you guys think? I was thinking about to one more time to ODIN Stock NB1 Rooted but with a PIT aswell to see if that fixes my problem but i'm really scared of using the PIT file.
Things i have tried:
* NB1 to NC1: TR>SuperSU>Stock OK2 with FF = Hangs no install
* NB1 to NC1: TR>SuperSU>Stock OK2 with SS = Symlinks errors no install
* ODIN Stock NB1 Root = Good, installs correctly
* OTA's NB1 to OK2 = Good, but no SuperSU, Custom Roms and VERY SLOW Install process.
* OTA's NB1 to OK2 = KingRoot > SS > Custom ROM = Sysmlink error no install
* PIT File + Stock NB1 Stock Rooted ODIN = Good, Tried to install OK2 Keep Root with FF = Hangs, no install.
I'm out of ideas...
EDIT: That's the log from FF attached.
Solution: Yes! Solved! After all the struggle someone posted this interesting post. I tried to install that version and didn't help because the app closed it self everytime i tried to open it... BUT it turns out chainfire put a timebomb to February 01 2017 in this version (v0.53) (You can read it here) So, i changed my time/date before that time and voila! Everything went smooth! Woohoo!. Thank you guys.

So you're on NB1? I would wipe the the phone clean then just take the OTA to the latest firmware and update that way then try installing a ROM.

I already tried that sadly, didnt work. i can't install anything that is not stock.
EDIT: Even the OK2 Stock from muzniz through FF doesnt install

Does these phone have a locked bootloader? If it does, only custom roms based on a stock ROM will work afaik.

It's a S6 Port based on TW ROM, it's a TW ROM. I tried OK2 with FF/SS that i previously installed a year ago without any problem but know fails, i don't know why.
This one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-update-to-i337oc3-5-0-1-keeproot-t3075814
and this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/development/port-albe95-s6-port-4-6-updt-30-10-15-t3241212

The custom ROM has to be based on a stock att s4 ROM, not a port from another Samsung ROM.

Thank you for the help but:
* I had this ROM in my phone before, it's compatible with I337 Locked Bootloader you can check the description.
* I still can't install the other ROM that's specific for ATT I337 (The OK2 Rooted Keep linked in my previous post). It's like Stock with Root ready.

I understand now.
Could it possibly be a hardware issue? I'm not sure since I don't have an att s4.
Edit: Congratulations on your success and sharing your solution.

[Q] AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 - No System

I know I am stupid, but I am trying to just get this phone to work. I did try and search for something that would come close to what I am encountering, but so far I can't find anything that would suggest a possible workaround. So, I hope this is in line with the rules, if not, please let me know and I will remove this myself pronto.
I was on 4.3 (MK2), rooted with TWRP and installed Xposed, all was fine and well, until AT&T decided to attack my phone to "remind" me to update to a newer version. After a few weeks I finally gave in, and knowing that I have somewhat heavily modified this phone, I went ahead and disable and uninstall Xposed, then head on to try and flash NC1 onto this phone via TWRP 3.72.
I was following this post, using post#3, and all was well, expect when I tried to flash AP using Odin, it was late and I failed to catch the fact Odin didn't connect my phone, so I guess the kernel didn't update. Then I went ahead and try booting it up. It got to the AT&T globe logo, only it has orange strips instead of blue. I waited maybe 15 mins for it to boot, and upon thinking it is not working, I pulled the battery and went into recovery and found I had a very early version backup, which I then restored that. It did boot! But the wifi wouldn't turn on, so I went and checked, the baseband was on NC1, but everything else is at MK2 (4.3). At that point, I give up and went to bed.
This morning, after giving it some good thoughts and research, I tried to Odin again, and this time I succeed, Odin recognizes my phone, and it flash the AP as it should. But when I try boot it up, it would only get to "safestrap disabled" and then black screen. After that, I can only get into the custom recovery, but no matter what I try, full/advance wipe, install, it would show something like "E: cannot mount system" so no matter what ROM I downloaded, it would not install, and when I try and re-boot, it would warn me that there is " No System"
So my question now is: since I can still see and access recovery, not all hope is lost, but since this is a work phone, I do need it back up and running, and I need it fast. How should I proceed from here? I tried straight flash a GPE ROM from here, but it would still run into the error of "E: cannot mount system" and trying to wipe/advance wipe would not work either.
If anyone has any idea what kind of problems I am running into, I am all ears to hear and try my best to get my work phone back up and running. Thank you all for taking you time to read, think and maybe help.

Are you sure you have Safestrap 3.72? It should be working if you do. Either way, try flashing the MK2 AP file/kernel from the downgrade thread or the KitKat Toolkit. That should guarantee it mounts and then you can try again. If that doesn't work, you might just have to ODIN NB1 and start from the downgrade.

I am now just trying to boot up the phone to check, and right now it is stuck at the Samsung Custom lock (white). So I guess either Odin NB1 or MK2 and start from there?
The only thing I think its odd is, it keeps telling me that it can't mount the system, and I can't for the live of me figure why that would even happen....

If you had not taken the OTA from AT&T your phone bootloader is still on MK2.
Did you flash NC1 before or after you received OTA from AT&T.

I was not able to take the OTA from AT&T, due to that it was rooted and Xposed, so somehow the system check would backfire. When I got the phone, it was on MK2, and I only rooted it and installed custom recovery, for I only need to be able to delete some stuff at will, thus, the root access.
Actually, since I can't boot pass the Samsung custom lock, is it still possible to use Odin? I would have thought Odin would not recognize the phone since it is not on.....

It will still work, ODIN requires you to hold one of the volume buttons while powering on to go into download mode on the phone which doesn't require booting to system.

OK, so just tried Odin it using the files from Deadly Venom Kitkat Magic Tool. Odin caught the phone alright, but after the files are lined up (the mk2 ones), it give me the following:
Get PIT for mapping..
There is no PIT partition
All threads completed. (succeed 0/ failed 1)
And of course, the top also showed FAIL!
Any suggestions? Try going directly to NB1 and downgrade from there?

So after an all-night, I finally got it back up and running. Here is what I did, in case someone runs into the same problem.
I grabbed the MK2 file here, un-zip it, Odin it to its respective slots, and then flash it. It took over 10 mins, but it did finish the flash, and Odin showed "PASS!"
So, now I have another question, I booted it up like when it first came in the box, so went through and did all the setup. I went into setting, and I see the following:
Android version: 4.3
Baseband: I337-MK2
Kernel: signed Sat Nov 16 14:33:13 KST 2013
Build #: JSS-MK2
So if I want to do this upgrade to 4.4.2/4.4.3 again, would I consider my phone as stock MK2 that has not been tried to upgrade to 4.4.2/4.4.3? I did try and confirmed that I don't have root (obviously), so I guess I have to treat this phone as if it never took any updates/modifications? Then I would ask which route to follow to ensure the best and most confirm result of upgrading to either 4.4.2/4.4.3.
Thanks all for your thoughts on how to de-bug this.

Yes your phone is stock MK2.
I do not know about 4.4.3 but you can find many 4.4.2 custom rom in the developer section.
First you need to root the phone. You can get the required files and instruction from here.
Second, you need to install the custom recovery. Since you are on MK2 you need to use Safestrap version 3.71. You can get the file and instructions here.
Once you have rooted and finish installing the SS (safestrap) you can find the custom rom in the developer section. Find the roms with SS option.

Sway8966, thank you for saving my behind more than once.
I will be following your instruction as to rooting the phone and also install custom recovery. However, if you see my first post, it seems I need to first install SS 3.71 to root, then SS 3.72 to upgrade to NB1/NC1? I will take a safe bet that I can't just use SS 3.72 to avoid brick. Also, that GPE version ROM, I had trouble finding the kernel, would there be a place to find it? Or is it in the package? I un-zipped it, but can't find the file that looks like the kernel in it.
Thanks again.

iantung329 I am glad to help you out.
You do not need to install SS recovery first to root the phone. Rooting is done by using the adb command to push the super user in the system area.
Since you are in a MK2 firmware/bootloader Safestrap 3.71 is the only one you can use.
Also your bootloader is MK2 so I would not go to install the NB1/NC1 system file on your phone. SS 3.72 is for the NB1/NC1.
To upgrade your phone to 4.4.2 OS you can find the custom rom packages (including the kernel) in here.
Bootloader MK2 and above can not use the custom kernel since there is no exploit for the kernel out so far. So you need to choose the TOUCHWIZ rom with SS version, not AOSP (Android open-source project) rom.
We are not supposed to tell you which rom to choose because people might not have similar taste or expectation in the choice of rom. Read around and choose the rom that you want.
If you'd asked me, I use Golden Eye rom. I am on NC1. You can see that in my signature section.
I will tell you how I installed the Golden eye rom as an example.
I download the package (zip file), my NC1 stock kernel file and superSU file.
Using the safestrap I installed the package zip file. After the installation finished I installed the NC1 kernel file and SuperSU file. Then I reboot my phone. That is. Other roms might have different instructions.

As sway said, you do not need Safestrap to root, you just use Saferoot and you have root. However, you can actually use SS 3.72 and it would be better to use it since you can then mount /system even while on a 4.4.2 kernel. You can also use the single GPE located in the general section. Sway's ROM flashing instructions are correct, but also remember to flash the kernel module zip in Safestrap, and you would be using the MLD set since you have the MK2 bootloader. The kernels and everything you need are included in the KitKat Magic Toolkit.

Sigh, I will admit, I have done it again, so I am back to flashing the MK2 file from a few post ago.
I think I will either go with stock rooted ROM or the GPE version, I think the only thing I am missing is the kernel, which I found in one of the post I have to Loki it since I am on AT&T, but I can't find the Loki software, or would that be using Odin as well?
The only reason I am looking to root this phone is so that I can tether. Traveling roughly 2-3 weeks a month ain't fun, but not all hotels have free wifi, so having my phone rooted and able to tether is like a life line. Also, after I tried GB, its wonderful! Apart from I can't find a good quiet time option, everything is awesome being able to use GB and AdBlock. Does either Sway or DeadlySin9 have a good recommendation for quiet time app/mod?
As soon as I get the phone back on stock MK2, I will be looking into either stock root ROM or GPE version. Thanks all! :fingers-crossed:

OK. @DeadlySin9, got the final question (hopefully :fingers-crossed
I am going to flash GPE version (here) and I will be following the direction on that, wipe, flash, kernel then reboot. You mentioned that I should use the MLD kernels, but which one is that in the Kitkat magic tool? AP_MLD, BL_MLD? And now I have SS 3.71 on the phone, would you recommend uninstalling that and install SS 3.72 instead, since I will be flashing GPE version anyway?
Also, what of this ROM (here)? I guess I can't flash this one?

Actually, neither of those work. There's one in the General section, with Safestrap in the thread title. That's the one you need. I do recommend going to 3.72 on Safestrap, and you need to use both the AP and BL files in ODIN.

Also, by the look of it, paid apps wouldn't work in this ROM, that might be a problem.

If you're still on MK2 then you can use the second one. And yeah, you can't download paid apps from the Play Store for some reason.

@DeadlySin9, thanks for pointing out the correct one to use, and yes, I am still stock on MK2, rooted and have not installed SS, pending the version discussion. I will go ahead and install SS 3.72 and the ROM from the first post and :fingers-crossed: that it will work wonders.
The reason that I am choosing this over the GPE, don't get me wrong, GPE I think is better, but no download paid apps is not going to work for me, some apps like, root explorer and a few others are a must on the phone. So that's a bummer. I wish it works, then I can just flash and be in peace.
Thank you @sway8966 also for helping out on this. I just freaked out when I found out the work phone was dead.....

[Q] Verizon Note 3 Rom Help

Hi Guys I'm trying to install a custom Rom on my phone but have failed 4 times now and have to reach out to the forum for help. I'm on 4.4.2 ota and have rooted w/ towel root sucessfully, installed safestrap 3.72 and 3.75, busybox and super su. I advance wipe and do a clean install. Everytime it says it was successful but when I reboot the screen goes black and does noting. The phone remains on but nobodys home. I've tried the Jasmine rom and the alliance rom with the same results. I used odin to go back to stock but I want a custom rom. Can anybody help? I've attached a screenshot of my about phone. Also can anybody recommend a Rom that helps with the signal/gps issues that started after KK?
Thanks in Advance!

You need to flash the NC2 kernel via odin. File and instructions can be found here. When following the steps in the OP you can substitute the rom you want for the one you can download from the post.
Also incase you didn't see it in the Safestrap OP you will only be able to use the stock rom slot, if trying to flash on a created slot it won't boot properly or at all (rom slots are only supported on NC2 firmware and previous, the ota is NC4).
Hope this helps.
That's great thank you very much for your help!

To be safe you might want to flash the rooted stock rom provided in the post I linked earlier. That rom is the NC4 stock with pre-root and a couple other tweaks Basically the same as OTA but better. Just follow the steps in the OP and you'll be good to go (if you haven't already).
thank you
My pleasure.
Ok I'm sorry I'm still confused. The OP doesn't say to flash with Odin anywhere it says flash with Safe strap. Do I flash the firmware with Odin first then Rom?

Anything firmware, kernel or modem related must be flashed in Odin as long as we have a locked bootloader. Just follow the steps as instructed and you'll be fine.

Canadian Note 3 SM-N900W8 Softkeys not working properly

I have a Canadian SM-N900W8 Note 3, that I wish to revert to complete stock, lollipop. I mostly have been using custom roms, and have recently reverted back to Stock using Kies. I rooted the device using this file.
After the rooting process, the softkeys do not function properly. The 'back' key does not function, and the 'menu' key acts as if I am holding it when I press it. The home key functions normally. Using the S-Pen, pressing on the softkeys, they work as intended. I have tried reflashing(and clearing cache) the stock rom from both kies, and sites like sammobile, but the issue persists.
After reading around, I found out that the file I used is not intended for my Canadian SM-N900W8, but for another model. The intended file for my device does not support lollipop, but only supports 4.4.2. After even more reading, I found the issue was related to the kernel. I flashed idlekernel, and the issue was resolved. The issue is, I want to have everything stock on the device, that includes stock rom, and kernel(or atleast appear stock). Upon booting with idlekernel, 2 messages, "KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING" and "Set Warranty Bit: kernel" appear. I want to get rid of the messages.
So, my question is, is there a way to either:
1) Fix the softkeys without a custom rom/kernel(essentially reverse the root), or,
2) Get rid of the SEANDROID and warranty messages, while running idlekernel
Thanks!
Flash the latest stock ROM from sammobile.com using Odin.

As said in the OP, I have already tried this, multiple times.
You used kies or Odin? Your post doesn't mention Odin.
The file linked in your post looks like the same file from chainfire's website which does support LP: https://autoroot.chainfire.eu

I used both, at different attempts. Sorry if I was not clear.
Here is where I read the file incompatibilities
hlteub is for LP, hltevl is for MM.
The Mexican and Canadian Note 3 may be exactly the same model just like it is for the s3.
Did you try smartswitch?
You used the emergency firmware recovery option in kies?
Flashes of the stock ROM were successful in Odin? You performed a factory wipe before booting the stock ROM for the first time? You were flashing the latest LP rom?
Did you try different versions of Odin?
The SEAndroid message cannot be removed if the phone is running a custom recovery.

If hlteub is for LP, and hltevl is for MM, should I ignore the android versions listed?
If they were the same model, why is there a softkey issue that this post is about?
Yes, I used the emergency recovery option in Kies.
All flashes I did were successful(Softkey issue is present always, even in setup wizard, and throughout the device).
Before installing new firmware, I factory wiped every time.
I have made sure what I flashed is latest, and have confirmed every time through Software Updates in about phone settings.
Smart Switch did nothing that Kies didnt already do.
Other people who have the same issue have said that flashing stock 4.4.2 fixes the issue(but upon upgrading back to 5.0, issue occurs), but I do not want to go back to that version.
Both the ub and vl are for the am-n900w8.
When rooting, it appears that you used a kk root file on an lp rom. Is this correct?
So the soft keys work on kk? If yes, did you flash to lp via Odin or did you run the ota update? Did you try flashing with a pit file?

I initially tried the hlteub file(for lp). This is what caused the issue. I later tried the vl file, and nothing different happened. 4.4.2 works, but upon using the OTA update the issue comes back when on lollipop. Same goes for Odin. I have not tried using a PIT file, how would I go about finding one that I will need?
The issue has been resolved!
Here is the solution.

Did you uninstall safestrap before you use flashfire?
Do you use the rooted lolli rom mentioned in the guide or the custom lolli rom. If you use custom lolli, is that rom mentioned that it is flashfire compatible?
I understand you are on NC1 bootloader so in order to OC4 working properly, OC4 bootloader need to be flashed via odin.
If you try everything and did not work, go back to NB1 and start from there. Use the NB1 firmware that I mentioned before.

So dude, when I went into download mode, everytime I tried to place that ALLAT&T file into the AP slot, it would cause Odin to freeze and not respond. Naturally, I got angry and decided to reboot into system and magically, I could use the OS again. Now I think I'm going to flash the bootloader like you said

I am sure you did extract the .md5 from the .rar. The latest odin is Version 3.10.7 but I am using version 3.10.6 for that .md5 and it went well too. Try with different odin then.

Wow, NC1 flasher is to use safestrap in lollipop. It only flash the NC1 kernel.
Are you in Kitkat or lollipop. If you were in your lollipop you need to update your lollipop bootloader.
As I said before, if your phone went to softbrick just flash the NB1 firmware via odin.
I swear, you are a legend, an absolute god. The amount of help and experience you have given me, if only I could pay you (I'm 15, so I can't make a PayPal yet) Right now I'm on Albe95's Note 5 port rom.

Upgrading to 6.0 on I337

I have been trying to upgrade my 4.4.2 s4 I337 to 6.0 marshmellow and am having many problems. Also I am EXTREMELY new to anything android or flashing or anything like this at all, I learned everything I know just today.
I rooted my phone using the towelroot method because it was the easiest for my phone. I am also using safestrap recovery because I think my phone is bootloader locked? I was having a lot of problems trying to install twrp so I just assumed it was that. I'm using usb debugging and I am using the 6.0 pico gapps.
I have tried multiple roms using safestrap and making sure that the rom is specifically for my phone, at&t and I337 but each time the rom shows it was successful and I reboot it goes to recovery booting and says I don't have an OS and I have to recover back to stock firmware using odin, beccause I did a full wipe before each install of the roms.
If there is any other info I might have missed or have anything to help me I would greatly appreciated it, and again I basically have no idea what I am doing and am just going off of trial and error and googling what every term means. Thank you
Edit: My bootloader is NB1 if that matters also.
Edit: Doing a little more searching is it even possible for me to get 6.0 with my phone?
The bootloader on your phone is locked and cannot run any custom ROMs unless it is a rom that is based on a stock Samsung ROM; therefore, a 6.0 ROM or higher is not possible. Also, Lineage, RR, etc. is not possible.

Thank you for the reply! After a lot more researching and doing very stupid stuff (it was all for fun and learning mostly anyway) I did brick my phone saying firmware upgrade encountered an issue I can only get to download mode I tried flashing the original firmware I had using the stock 4.4 nb1 file but that is also now failing in odin, do you have any suggestions that could work?
Edit: I tried flashing to mk2 and thats how it bricked, but shouldn't I be able to go back to my stock firmware even if I bricked my phone like this? Both the towelrootable stock nb1 4.4 and the normal stock nb1 4.4 isnt working when I try to flash them in odin
You should flash the same or newer ROM to the phone. Even though the phone says it encountered an error, you can still flash the phone with Odin with this message in the screen.
Hopefully, this thread will help: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/guide-odin-to-stock-updating-rooting-t2926642

I'm probably jinxing it by typing while its still working but I switched my usb cable and so far it hasn't failed when before it would fail immediatly, thank you for all the help!
Only the MDL bootloader can run non touchwiz ROMs. All other bootloaders can only run touch wiz based ROMs.
