[Q] Verizon Note 3 Rom Help - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys I'm trying to install a custom Rom on my phone but have failed 4 times now and have to reach out to the forum for help. I'm on 4.4.2 ota and have rooted w/ towel root sucessfully, installed safestrap 3.72 and 3.75, busybox and super su. I advance wipe and do a clean install. Everytime it says it was successful but when I reboot the screen goes black and does noting. The phone remains on but nobodys home. I've tried the Jasmine rom and the alliance rom with the same results. I used odin to go back to stock but I want a custom rom. Can anybody help? I've attached a screenshot of my about phone. Also can anybody recommend a Rom that helps with the signal/gps issues that started after KK?
Thanks in Advance!

You need to flash the NC2 kernel via odin. File and instructions can be found here. When following the steps in the OP you can substitute the rom you want for the one you can download from the post.
Also incase you didn't see it in the Safestrap OP you will only be able to use the stock rom slot, if trying to flash on a created slot it won't boot properly or at all (rom slots are only supported on NC2 firmware and previous, the ota is NC4).
Hope this helps.

That's great thank you very much for your help!

Do I just flash the kernal over my stock rom?

To be safe you might want to flash the rooted stock rom provided in the post I linked earlier. That rom is the NC4 stock with pre-root and a couple other tweaks Basically the same as OTA but better. Just follow the steps in the OP and you'll be good to go (if you haven't already).

thank you

My pleasure.

Ok I'm sorry I'm still confused. The OP doesn't say to flash with Odin anywhere it says flash with Safe strap. Do I flash the firmware with Odin first then Rom?

Anything firmware, kernel or modem related must be flashed in Odin as long as we have a locked bootloader. Just follow the steps as instructed and you'll be fine.

Can someone explain the nc2/nc4 thing

So i have a note 3 im rooted and i installed safestrap 3.75. The problem i have is that when i install a rom on a rom slot, i reboot the system and all i get is a black screen. sometimes the menu and back buttons vibrate when i hit them sometimes they dont. I think its because my phone is nc4, but i downloaded an nc4 rom. Can someone explain what the difference between nc2 and nc4 is.

The boot loop is caused by using a ROM slot. As of right now, the only slot to use that doesn't have an issue (bootloop, battery drain) is Stock Slot. You also want to make sure that you are on the correct SS (3.75 B04) see thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610
I would start fresh (modem back to stock, then root). Also, depending on the firmware you have (if you have the OTA Kit Kat) then you will have to Odin Firmware then the Kernel in order for you to actually use any of the ROMS out there.
In regards to the NC2/NC4, its just a radio (signal stability). Some have preferences, so it depends on which one works best for you. I had NC4 and it was horrible, so I went back to NC2 which was more stable than MJE for me. But I live in Tampa, Fl. so it all depends.
Everything you need is on beans' thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524572
That has everything you need to get going. Hope it works out!

Could you possibly elaborate on this or point me in the right direction? I'm having the same issue currently. No boot animation just a black screen on 2 separate roms that I try and flash in the stock slot. I'm rooted on NC4 with busybox, SU, and SS 3.72. It was my understanding that you couldn't change the kernel on the retail version?

If you're on retail, then no, you wouldn't you would just do the following:
1. Root with TowelRoot
2. Install Busy Box from Play Store...open App and install
3. Install SafeStrap 3.75 B04 open App and Install
4. Reboot into SafeStrap, Wipe (Factory Reset) Stock Slot
5. Install Whatever ROM
6. Reboot into Download Mode FROM SAFESTRAP
7. Odin (AP slot) Updated NC2 Firmware for NC4 OTA
this useful thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2528707 will guide you more in depth, and also, there is youtube help from someone named rootjunky.... step by step if you are like me and need visual assistance :good:

Depends on the ROM you choose. I would look at the OP or Download section of the ROM you are going to dl and see if they require it or not. I know there is at least 1 ROM that required it, but again, it all depends on what their OP (Original Post) states in the description.
Edit: You will need to:
Updated NC2 Firmware for NC4 OTA
if you have the KK OTA, then you will need the firmware to proceed.
What if I decide to go back to the stock rom? Do I need to restore it in SS then odin the nc4 kernel or can I leave the nc2 kernel? And where can you get the nc4 kernel? Sorry didn't mean to steal this thread...just can't find the answer to that question.

You can Odin back to stock if you want to sell the phone or for whatever reason.
All the tars for stock are on beans' thread, along with instructions on how to get you going so you can flash the ROM of your choosing.

[Q] Why can't I get a custom rom to boot?

Hi all,
Working with a AT&T NC1 safestrap phone. Having problems getting any custom rom to boot. Phone usually shows white on black Samsung logo for a few second then restarts, sometimes into stock recovery.
Detailed below is my method, and methods tried with same result. Perhaps someone can see the error of my ways.
I have been trying to start fresh.... so:
1) Odin I337UCUFNB1_TWRootable_Full_Odin.tar.md5
2) Do not boot, Download mode and flash 2400258.zip
3) Install tr, and SS 3.72
4) Reboot into recovery, install Hyperdrive 18.1 or Gravitron S4 3.2 for SS, then flash SuperUser then NC1 module.
No matter what, I cannot get a rom to boot. Just hangs at Samsung logo
Other methods tried:
1) Using I337_NB1toNC1_KeepRoot_OTA.zip and/or I337_NB1toNC1_KeepRoot_OTAwBL.zip to flash to NC1 before custom rom (after Odin NB1) (instead of 2400258.zip)
2) Using NB1 Odin Files from Magic Tool BL,AP,CP before flash of custom rom, tried also after flashing custom rom
3) flashing NB1 stock kernel
4) flashing NC1 stock kernel
Tried maybe 30 or 40 times, cannot get a custom Rom to boot. To be clear, stock boots just fine whenever i Odin back and upgrade to NC1.
Anyone out there insightful enough to lend a hand? More detailed instructions than on INDEX ALL THINGS POST? See my mistake? Losing my mind just a little bit, flashing the days away...
Any help greatly appreciated!
Are you trying to flash a custom ROM in the STOCK slot? Or a second slot?
I do NOT have safestrap but I know I have read you HAVE TO flash Roms in the STOCK Slot for it to work.

Is your ROM SafeStrap Compatible?
Yes indeed. Tried a variety of them off the safe strap compatible page. I feel there is something I am missing but not sure what. I have been wiping data, davliche, cache, and system each time. Is this correct?

Other than the apps out there to add other languages it only comes with what is included with the stock build. As for the other apps I suggest you search the Play Store or here on XDA for other options.

Download the files here.
You will need to use Odin to flash the G900V_NCG_Stock_Kernel.tar.md5 file and then reboot and run towelroot again. After that enter download mode again and Odin NI2_stock_kernel.tar.md5 and reboot. Then install busybox and then safestrap and flash the rom from safestrap.

As long as it says connected you should be good to go. Also this won't work on a Mac so make sure you are on a PC.

HI! Thanks so much for the links! I started to follow your directions, i flashed the NCG one and now my phone has been stuck on a black screen saying "android is upgrading optimizing app 3 of 12 for about 20 mins. I'm so sorry to keep bothering you but could you tell me what to do now? i tried taking the battery out but it's still the same thing when it powers back on. Thanks again
I have Safestrap installed, rooted using Towelroot, SuperSU installed.
When I try to install a ROM in to a ROM-slot, I do the factory wipe on that slot the install the zip...it says it succeeds but rebooting to that slot only gets me a black screen. I have to remove the battery to reboot, go in to Safestrap Recovery, and revert to the Stock ROM.
Am I missing a step? Any idea what is going wrong?

If you would have read numerous threads on the issue you would have known. Instead you found out the same way I did some weeks ago!! There are known bug issues with Safestrap that cause the problems you are experiencing when using a rom slot. Use the stock slot only and all will work well. Yes, this means you have to wipe out your stock S5 system, but you can always odin back to stock.

Use this updated version of SafeStrap. The reboot issue has been fixed when using ROM slots in this version. Uninstall your current version first and then install the updated one. You may need to install SafeStrap to uninstall it if it isn't in your app drawer.
I have read some threads but obviously not enough.
I believe that I can only use touchwiz ROMs with Safestrap, is that correct? That basically means no AOSP roms are available to me. I ran LiquidSmooth on my s3; any suggestions on what would be the closest to that in a TouchWiz ROM?

Eclipse is as close to AOSP that you will get on the S5. @nitroglycerine33 did a beautiful job at it so give it a try.
I just came across that one and will be trying it later today. Thank you!!
Messed up NK2 stock ROM
I purchased my S5 yesterday and the phone was updated to NK2 at the store. I then proceeded to root NK2 by Odin flashing the NCG stock kernel, rooting with towelroot, and then Odin flashing the NK2 stock kernel. I've attached a image that shows my current Baseband and Build. Here's where I messed up: Before doing the smart thing of installing Safestrap Recovery v3.75 and doing a backup of the stock rom slot, I went ahead and installed Titanium Backup and restored all of the apps+data from my old LG G2 (that part's fine) as well as accidentally restoring some of the LG G2 system settings (I really only wanted to restore my SMS/MMS and Call Logs, but sadly I did more than that). The result is that I'm getting a bunch of "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" crashes when I go into certain System Settings menus (e.g., "Blocking Mode" or "Notification Panel --> Related Apps"). I'd like to simply wipe the phone and start over and I know that a simple "Factory Data Reset" won't fix things for me. I'd like to Odin flash back to the "stock, rooted NK2' state, but I'm not sure where to find that download and what, if anything, I need to do to prep my phone to get it back into that state. Can I do that with an Odin flash of the "Download NK2 Odex" in Post#2? Or do I need to install Safestrap and flash it into the "Stock Rom Slot" from there?
Sorry I'm so confused.

Stock ROM Backup

Hi,
I have rooted and installed TWRP on my 910F Note4 as I was fed up waiting on the lollipop update rolling out. I am currently on 4.4.4 and have made a full backup using TWRP of the stock rom.
My intention was flashing the Cyanogen ROM and using that, but i now see on sammobile there is a stock 5.01 rom available. I have a few questions about this.
1. If I flash to Cyanogen can I still revert back to the stock rom 4.4.4 I have made a backup with? I read somewhere there might be problems as I was on KitKat then moved to lollipop(Cyanogen).
2. Can I flash the stock lollipop rom from within TWRP? Or do you have to do this via ODIN?
3. If I flash the Lollipop stock ROM with Odin I assume I will lose root and TWRP? So this would have to done again?
Guess I am asking what is the best way to proceed?
Thanks again

hi Paul,
1. i beleve to flash CM from kitkat you will need to install the lollipop bootloader first.
2. You have to flash the stock rom via Odin, you will keep all apps settings and files but you will lose root (you u can re root in 3 minutes)
Best thing you could do is flash the stock rom first with odin, see how that feels (IMO its good been using it for months now) and then root it and back it up and flash CM12 (you dont have to flash any boatloader at this point)

Ok tried to flash Stock O2 UK lollipop ROM via ODIN and got error message on screen. MD5 too big or something. Had to pull battery on phone. Had to then reflash TWRP. Got back into TWRP and tried to do a recovery of the backup I took but phone is stuck at Galaxy note 4 screen. It then shuts down and restarts and gets to the same screen again.
Do I try a different ROM? What can I do?
Thanks

They have another solution?
Thank you.:good:

I need help with installing the Alliance ROM PLEASE.

EDIT: I have successfully installed the Alliance ROM. Here's how i did it.
Prerequisites:
Your phone at at least 50% battery
A charge cable
MicroSD card that you can plug into your computer
Odin 3.09
SafeStrap, version 3.75 APK on your MicroSD card
Alliance ROM on your MicroSD card
NCG tar.md5 (the big file, not the kernel)
I started off on a rooted 5.0 VZW Galaxy S5. After some confusion, I downgraded to NCG (4.4.2) using Odin. After doing that, I went to Towelroot, got the APK, rooted, downloaded SuperSU from the play store (I had to sign into google at this point), installed it's binaries (NORMALLY! Don't choose the TWRP method), rebooted when it asked me to. From there, I installed BusyBox from the play store and installed it within the app. Then I installed Safestrap (version 3.75), which I had on my MicroSD card. I used the app My Files to navigate to my MicroSD and installed the APK. Then I installed it within the app, and when the "reboot to recovery" button worked, I rebooted into SafeStrap recovery mode. At this point, the Alliance ROM zip file should ALREADY BE ON YOUR MICROSD CARD, WHICH SHOULD BE IN YOUR PHONE. Now, you're going to press the INSTALL button to the top right in Safestrap recovery, and you're going to navigate to your MicroSD card. It might be already opened to that. Then you're gonna select the Alliance ROM and flash it. After it successfully flashes, reboot into download mode (if for some reason you aren't able to do it immediately, you get into download mode by holding volume down, home button, and power button at the same time). Now, using Odin, you're gonna flash the firmware that the instructions in the Alliance thread tells you to (here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver.../rom-alliancerom-build-3-rom-control-t2818632). If everything works, it's gonna take a couple of minutes, optimize apps, and boot.
Huge thanks to Beans and his team for creating the Alliance mod, and huge thanks to Tulsadiver for helping me get through the process during my confusion.
Original thread below
Hi. I'll cut to the chase. I was an idiot and thought I could just flash the Alliance ROM from my SD card, but my phone is currently a factory restored 5.0. So, after unsuccessfully flashing Alliance ROM, I thought, well, I probably need to be on 4.4.2 to do this. So, what I'm wondering is, do I need to go back down to 4.4.2 to install Alliance ROM? And do I need Safestrap recovery to do it, or can I do it from stock recovery (home button+volUp+Power)? I did a lot of digging in the Alliance ROM post and there were no posts regarding my problem/question, probably because they're all experienced and I'm not (this is my first time trying to flash a custom ROM).
It SOUNDS like I need to flash a full stock tar using Odin, is that correct? Once I do that, I would be on stock wiped 4.4.2, I assume. From there, could I flash the Alliance ROM and continue with the instructions? Or do I need to root first and get safestrap and all that crap? I feel like Beans was really vague with his instructions on installing ROMs, but whatever. Please help though, I'm kind of stuck in the middle of this with a softbricked phone.
Thank you so much in advance, I appreciate it.

EDIT: Also, I was on ROOTED 5.0 Lollipop just before this. I just got so sick of lollipop, I was ready for something different. So here we are. To confirm, my phone is the standard retail SM-G900VZW model.
EDIT2: Apparently App Ops and SuperSU survived the wipe and, after downloading Root Checker, I can confirm that I'm still rooted... Huh.

Download busybox from play store. Install it. Install safestrap. Once recovery is installed, go into recovery, install alliance, from within safestrap, boot into download mode and flash the full firmware Odin tar.

Wait, so I don't need to downgrade my phone? Keep in mind I'm on stock rooted 5.0, which just got factory reset so I got nothing except for the root. Also, what full firmware odin tar are you referring to? NE9? This one: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23610159112652201
Or this one: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23622183712472727
I'm getting these links from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ment/stock-collection-kernels-modems-t2842069
I really appreciate you replying. Thank you.
The first one. That firmware will downgrade you to NE9.

Ok, so I don't need to downgrade to install the ROM. Got it. Thank you. Is there anything else I should know?
Not that I know of. ROM installations are different so always refer to their installation instructions. Some will say to flash the firmware first. The op knows best. Alliance NE9 says to do a full wipe (everything but SD card). Install the ROM, reboot to download mode ( don't hit reboot system). Once in download mode, flash the firmware tar and let your phone reboot.

So, I installed Safestrap and did all that, but when I press the reboot into recovery button, it just reboots the phone normally. It doesn't go into safestrap recovery. Am I supposed to hold some buttons or something?
Did safestrap ask for SuperSU permissions? Did you install busy box? You can't just download the app.

Yes, I've installed BusyBox and given SS root permissions. I installed the APK 3.75 Safestrap that I used to get into SS recovery when I was getting to rooted 5.0 a while back, so I know that the APK isn't corrupt or anything like that.
I forgot. You are on lollipop. You need to flash the NE9 kernel first ( via Odin). You already have safestrap but it doesn't work on lollipop. After you flash the NE9 kernel you will have the option to boot into recovery. Have alliance on your SD card ready to install.

Found a "NE9 Stock tar.md5". Does that sound right? DL is here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23578570567721275

Thank you. I'm going to flash the kernel then, then I'll get back to you if anything comes up. Again, I really appreciate you helping me. Thank you.

It booted into stock recovery mode after odin successfully flashed NE9. Now do I install the ROM from stock recovery, or do I boot the phone and get to Safestrap to install the ROM from Safestrap recovery? I am currently in recovery mode.
You must not have had safestrap on your phone after all. Can you get back to download mode? You probably need to flash your lollipop kernel to get back to lollipop.

I definitely had safestrap. Though, here's something: Everyone talks about a menu that pops up during boot that allows you to enter either safestrap recovery, or boot, and I've never had/seen that menu, even when I was rooting 5.0. Yes, my BusyBox worked and was properly installed, and yes, I had Safestrap recovery installed.
I just tried rebooting and it after sitting at the first screen for a while, it rebooted quickly and went back into recovery mode. What if I try installing Alliance from recovery mode? Will it work?

I've never been on stock recovery before. I think it has to be a custom recovery. You might need to pull your battery and let it set for a bit and see if you can get into download mode.

I can get into download mode perfectly fine. I'm going to kernel back to 5.0 then...
But what do I do now? Should I downgrade to 4.4.2 with the stock firmware once I successfully boot 5.0?
EDIT: Yup, booted 5.0 perfectly fine. Now what? Downgrade to 4.4.2 and flash the NE9 Kernel?
Proof that Safestrap is on my phone:
