Nexus 9 won’t be updated to Android 7.1.2 Nougat - Nexus 9 General

I read google will not update NEXUS 9 to the next version of Android.
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-6-9-nougat-746286/

Too bad, but they told us in the beginning: Guarandeed updates untill Oct. 2016.
We're lucky that some smart Devs here can cook Custom ROMS for us.

Our two years of main updates are over.
So it's not surprising... So back to AOSP/LOS no problem.
The sad thing is we probably won't get our audio fix.

I am sad they have gave up not to bad with phones as I tend to get a new one with every contract but being as all new android tablets have been canned pretty much I hoped they would keep this one up to date. Looks like I'll be rooting

RIP and I just bought my Nexus 9, receive it today lol.. At least they got it to 7.1.1 which is substantial.
Google really has no other tablet, other than the Pixel C now. Nexus 9 is still a very strong contender in the Tablet world, nothing out IMHO worth the $$ to make a difference. Would love to see a 8.9" Pixel C2.

maybe all is not lost and Google will launch the second wave beta confirmed
and come on, why NP receive? just because is android tv?!

Well I received mine last week lol, thanks for the Open Source community that do their best to keep our devices alive, far from being outdated like the big companies wants us to believe.

Wonder if someone is going to make a 7.1.2 ROM and higher

Android 7.1.1 came with a nasty surprise, we got bad audio aka low bass and volume.
PS. Good anime !

@Super-Veloce you bet I will!

Urgh.....
I just did a clean install of stock android 7 and this thing is so slow it hurts.
It takes like 5 seconds for the keyboard to appear in chrome. This is a fresh install of Android 7 stock.
I thought the fresh install would speed things up. I am so sad.
But maybe it's a sign that our devices are just getting too old

I had the same issue. I finally resolved it by performing a factory reset - it seems to format the data partition and thus resolv any corruption on the file system.
Now my N9 is back to 7.1.1 and runs smothly again.

I have seen other Google devices get better with the software updates after release, but the Nexus 9 is an exception. Like they never could fully get a handle on the SoC and memory management. They've given up.
Thankfully the community stepped in with wonderful kernel work among other things. The Nexus 7 has also benefitted greatly from community support. If I was in the market for a tablet that's not officially supported I'd go that way instead. Less likely to get a lemon IMHO.

The Nexus 9 certainly has the power even with stock, mine has 6 or 7 different user accounts for managing family members games on it, it stutters a bit every so often but it's quite stunning that it can handle that, the tegra chipset is unparalleled and I believe it's been chosen for the new Nintendo Switch.

I have the feeling that there must be different versions of the Nexus 9 in the wild. My Nexus 9 is so sluggish that I only use it to read ebooks. If I wipe it it's ok, for a couple of hours/days and then it gets slow again. The next thing I'll try is disabling the FS-encryption but if that solves anything why did Google enforce that in the first place?
I don't understand how people say "it has the power even with stock" and state "it stutters a bit every so often" just a couple of words later. It either is powerful and delivers a consistent performance or it isn't.

Thinking of buying Galaxy Tab

Heyy,
Im a huggeee android fan n was looking forward to getting an android tablet next month...before buyin i wanted to ask some questions regarding the tablet.
1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
Thanksss

Then I'd say wait it out.
If you're a huge Android fan you'd already have a Tab!
My advise is, if you can wait, wait. Personally, i've been waiting a long time for a decent Android tablet - I even bought a cheap chinese iRobot, and had a Huawei S7 on preorder (cancelled when the shipping date kept slipping).
So far, the Tab has exceeded my expectations for an Android tablet, given that the OS is supposedly "not optimized" for tablets, which is a phrase that many reviews have used, but few (if any) have actually demonstrated due to incredibly lazy journalism.

Dave

Indeed! Just look at the comments in most of the reviews, and this invariably crops up time and time again from people who haven't even tried the Tab!
When an iPad displays an iPhone app in a "window", it's a feature of the OS that allows the tablet to take advantage of the iPhone ecosystem, yet when the Tab does the same for Android apps it's because the OS is "not optimized" for tablets.
Got to love those reviews that say that Android doesn't support the Tab's native resolution, when in actuality it supports any resolution and a well-coded app can take advantage of it. All because it's not an "official" Market resolution, which Google could "fix" by just saying that it is so!
Regards,
Dave

I've been a long time WM fan, but just got a Tab about an hour ago! cant wait to try it out properly! i used a demo at carphone warehouse and it is the ideal android device, its very quick! im new to the android world so i dont know much. but i highly recommend it!
Thanks for the help guys....i know the OS its not optimized for the device but will it support gingerbread and honeycomb or the processor is too weak for that?
Also will it support custom roms like cyanogen?

1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
The 1ghz Hummingbird and PowerVR 540GX GPU is the most powerful single core SOC on the market right now, and it's arguably competive or superior to the Tegra 2 in graphics performance as well. It can handle 2.3 just fine, and should be good for 2.4 or whatever version number Honeycomb gets as well. Nobody can answer if Samsung will support it, but the community should have all the tools to do so as well.
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
Video calling is ok to good, same as any mobile device, but with BIGGER FACES. Qik, Tango, Fring and Skype are your current choices for software. All work best on WiFi, obviously
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
There's no REAL alternative at the moment. There's a lot of lesser alternatives (no phone, no GPS, lower quality materials, lower resolution, etc), but nothing better in this form factor. In the mobile electronics world, there's always something better coming.
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
In time, you can, because Samsung didn't lock the bootloader and they've released the source code for all the shipping variants. Just keepin mind that no Android device has custom ROM support right out of the gate, not even the vaunted Nexus One. It takes time, multiplied by sales. I should also mention that the Tab has sold nearly as many units as the Nexus One, if the reports are accurate.

KitKat ETA?

I'm trying to get a date for the KitKat update, has anyone heard anything? I'm so on the fence about this device.
Hi,
We'll update with an ETA once we're a bit further through with development.
Very glad to hear that there is development on building out a Kit Kat update.

Weren't you going to take Pleiades up on her $170 offer? For that price it's a steal.

Seriously, you not motivating them to finish it faster with your constant asking about kitkat.
KitKat is sufficiently different to not be considered "just an upgrade" - there's some major changes to the OS going on in there.
Plus, we can't just build it and release it - with an Android device there are so many variables that need testing and retesting; then, once we're happy it has to go to Google for certification... Basically a quick turnaround is not something you're looking at here!
I dont want to bash mad catz cause their a hardware company not software and i believe they had the best intentions at heart from the start, but would it not make more sense to just bite the bullet and admit this has been a massive flop and give out 30 units to the elite development teams that are well renowned on xda and just let them sort the console out. Pretty sure they could make this devise epic in a matter of days rather than us having to wait until 2042 until any kind of releases are available which will probably be totally underwhelming
at least that way you might shift a few more units once its actually up and running correctly.
I remember when i got my jxds7300, it was a bag of crap pretty much like the mojos current state cause of the software being so poor, a few devises went to some decent devs and the source code accidently got leaked. litteraly within a day we had 2 custom roms with major major improvement virtually all bugs were fixed, compatability went up ten fold, a built to purpose key mapper for the devise and loads of cool tweeks became available, along with cwm.
i know jxds chinese and dont play by the rules but if you cant beet'em join'em. Its not mad catz fault if the source codes accidently leaked onto the web
But seriously look through every devise on xda and theirs so many cool tweeks and projects going on for virtually every devise made. Then you get to the m.o.j.o and its almost like its considered the total outcast no one wants to touch with a 10ft pole even the 3rd party charged with the android build dont appear to want to go near this console. they might be doing something but 6 months is a hell of a long time in the world of android for nothing at all which would suggest its pretty much been given up on.
Also it didnt do any harm for me, but isnt using a male to male usb to root kinda a dodgy way of us having to make this thing work? if their both usb males surely powers being sent both ways through the cable creating the potential to fry both the mojo and computer under the right circumstances. or am i being dumb again not an expert on electricity. I mean theirs a fing sd card slot. hows their not a built in bootlader that accesses the micro sd slot thats totally insane and asking for trouble
Soz if this comes across as a rant which it kinda is, but everything around the mojo seems a complete farse looking in from the outside so far. which is a massive massive shame as it had the potential for such great things. With out the xda devs on board this thing will always be mediocre

I heard about it pre-launch and thought it was cool, had forgotten about it until recently, but IMO this is no where near the price point to where people will pick it up, while this is worlds better than ouya, even ouya is still overpriced at 100 bucks when you have major competitors like amazon fire tv. the mojo has teh specs and some other perks but at 200 bucks it just makes far more sense to buy the much more supported fire tv and use controllers on that.

[Q] Now it's 2014, is the Nexus 10 still worth buying?

Hi,
I've been wanting a tablet for a while now, and I have my eye on the Nexus 10, it's reasonably priced, and has been since it came out, it has an amazing display etc. etc.
But it's really quite old now, I've looked around and there's very much mixed views, I know exactly what I want from a tablet, and I was wondering if the Nexus 10 would be perfectly fine. I know the 2nd Gen. version is supposed to be coming out soon, but if this tablet does everything and want and is cheaper, what's the point in buying the newer one?
Anyway, basically I want a tablet that can easily to the following things:
Browse the internet
Watch movies
Browse Facebook
Be easily able to use Instagram
Easily able to use Snap Chat
Play games
Easily customisable (eg. Home screen backgrounds)
Have a decent front a back back camera
Updates to the latest version of android as soon as it's released
Feels good in the hand
Looks pretty good
Decent battery life
I'm pretty sure the Nexus 10 should be fine for most if not all of this, but I thought I'd check. One thing I think might help if you think I could get a better tablet for a decent price (preferably no more than £300) is that I really like the shape on the Nexus 10, but I really hate the shape of the Nexus 7. I don't know why, it's just one if those things I guess.
Thank you
You wont find a better 10" tablet within this price range. I still love it, its fast, has a monster gpu and decent battery life for me. Dont forget the 2560*1600 pixels screen..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Free mobile app
For the price of N10, I seriously doubt there's anything better. But if you can throw in more money, I'd seriously consider waiting for the Galaxy Tab S with its 10.5" 2560x1600 AMOLED screen. *drool*
I bought 32gb one in March and i am loving it. I dont regret it at all.
Joe

It's Googles only 10" tablet so far. I highly doubt they will not add lollipop to it. It's not like they have to rewrite software like the other companies have to. Just work on the binaries and it's good to go.
But I'm optimistic they will continue the updates. They have for the n4 and n7 which both have had new versions come out.

Agreed, I also think they will add the next update, but that will be the last one I'm afraid. Also, I think that the next one will be last for the Nexus 4 as well. Google maintains the software for 18 months, and that expires this month for the Nexus 10 and 4.

Screw you Google, I'm going home...

Over a month waiting for google to fix 7.1.1 audio...
It seems I waited on google a lot for this device over the last two years. Waiting some more is no longer an option.
I mean you say you're still supporting this device then you half ass a broken update and repeat the same drivel a month later...nice.
You played the 64 bit and the tegra chip up when you sold it to me, I bought this thing instead of the shield...my bad!
I'm done with it. I may even go out and buy an iPad ! Screw you Google, I thought you were you better than this.
kthxbye
Agreed. So glad I didn't pay full price for this paperweight. It's been a very disappointing experience even before the 7.1.1 audio fiasco. I don't expect that Google will ever fix the audio problem, and the speakers were by far the best thing about the Nexus 9!
I don't see the point of this thread. One bad experience with a product and you hate Google as a company? I think you should be a little more aware of the situation and not let your emotions run amok. I don't recall Google formally stating that it will fix this product's problem in future updates. If you had to blame someone, it would probably have to be HTC's developers and whichever group who decided 2gb of RAM and tegra processor would be best for this product.
If you can't see it from my point of view, delete your Google account, delete your YouTube account, stop using Google search, Google maps, etc. and see how "wonderful" a life without our God, Google, is. Have a nice day!

Does anyone know of anything that would help me know if audio changes at all. Because my ears aren't very reliable. I'm currently going through all the audio files trying to find what caused the problem. I ruled out a few things but I need something that will tell if the audio was fixed or not.

I'm with you Fazbender. Google really started to show form with the Nexus 4, then 7 (2013) and there high point was the Nexus 5 with Kit Kat. Everything since then has been a bit of a car crash. The Nexus 6P was a slight return but the Pixels are way overpriced.
On the software side, Google keyboard was best in KK, Face unlock worked as you could see where to aim the camera and Google Now is far better than the half ass Assistant.
I've now ditched Google for One Plus and life is much better. Waiting for the day One Plus release a tablet. I know One Plus don't have a great past either. Lets hope they have learnt there lesson.

Take the OP3, make it 8" and stick in a 6000Mah battery.
Seriously, how hard can it be?
(I'd be all over it also.)

How will updates be? Like Nexus/Pixel line?

One of the strong points of the Nexus and Pixel line is that you can get frequent updates (https://developers.google.com/android/images). How will the updates look like from Essential? One time upgrade, and then abandon us? Or frequent ASOP updates with fixes?
Whatever they may say about it, we won't really know until the updates come or not. It's being said it's either very close to stock or stock so getting upgrades out should be easy enough in a practical sense.
I'm pretty sure Rubin said in his hour long interview witih Walt Mossberg that it would get regular month security updates, if not better.
The bigger concern is how long will they support the phone for? Just two or three years like Google (making the phone insecure and obsolete after that)? Or five years like Apple? Even more importantly, what if they just don't succeed. If the company folds after a year or two, there will certainly be no updates after that. That's a chance one takes with a new company.
The community will carry it for a while if they move enough of them. As to Rubin, the proof is in the pudding. We've been sold the regular updates thing before and never actually got them or had them stop short. Time will tell.
I don't see updates being a problem. It seems to pretty much be stock Android with a few added features for the cameras and their modules to be released.
Right, but the question is how long they will lag. Lots of manufacturers make claims about updates.
Have they made any statements?
I played with one yesterday and it is almost completely stock 7.1.1 except for the camera software and the little bits in the code that control the modules. I see Andy making sure this gets updated to Oreo by the time the new pixels drop. that is 2 months out. dont quote me though
This is what I wanted to know, since its basically stock. Will it get Oreo (Android 8.0) fairly soon?

Considering how Android Oreo is built I say there is a good chance of quickish updates. 8.0 keeps the make Android code separate from any customizations now. They leave the hooks open do to your own thing besides their code. I think this is why Andy went super stock with 7.1.1 to make it easier later on and they can do more customization leader with their software because it will be easier after Oreo.

MKBHD and I were talking to one of their software engineers (who use to work for Google as well) at the event on Monday and he told us they were already working on Oreo. In MKBHD's unboxing and first impressions video he mentioned a few of the things that were talked about in that discussion like it being easier to quickly update because it's so close to stock etc.. Although, once they release their home device with Ambient OS I bet we see more customizations on the phone firmware to accommodate that
One thing I question, why 7.1.1 vs 7.1.2? .2 offered a few neat last bit of features before 8.0 so its interesting why almost all OEM's have stuck with 1.1 before possibly jumping to 8.0.

Unless I'm reading it wrong it looks like the 7.1.2 update was targeted for Nexus and Pixel devices. Most of the fixes fix issues specific to those devices so why would an OEM port an update that doesn't affect their device.

This may be true, but it did also bring thins like the long touch shortcut feature as well as the fingerprint sensor swipe feature that may work on other hardware that had the same sensor hardware.
It's not a big deal, and though we have 8.0 now, I might want to wait a bit for Google to release a update to that as well hearing what I am from early adopters that have 8.0 now on their Pixel's. New features and battery life improvements plagued with persistent notifications, worse BT, and other odds and bits that seem like rushed bugs.
Exactly what I would expect from Version X.0 for a major OS change so not surprising at all.

A very valid concern. Especially since these sorts of people and companies throw a bunch of money at stuff and if it doesnt look like it is going to get the giant return on the investment they hope within a year or so then they do shut it down and move on to their next big thing.
My other concern with this is if we will get full kernel source or not as well. I would assume yes, since Andy helped make the deal about Andsroid being so open and sources available, but you never know with phone OEMs. Even though this is basically stock ROM, I bet the kernel source will be needed so we can interface the best with the accessory pins and make use of the custom camera stuff.

Also, even if they make the kernel source available, will the phone be popular with developers? It seems like the sort of phone that might. As you say, Rubin is very supportive of open source (even on the hardware for the modules). But on the other hand, it's an expensive and quirky phone. Even the Pixel (with its huge price jump and move away from the Nexus brand) took much longer to catch on with developers than previous Nexus phones had. I'm hoping the devs like it.
