I was excited, when i read that people are working on a MM based Rom for the Rn2 but so much time passed. Let's face it, there won't be any decent and stable 6.0 rom for this phone. I don't know how far they are but obviously the lack of source codes or sth makes it impossible. I regret the day i bought this phone. No decent custom roms, HORRIBLE battery life, I have to recharge it twice per day and lack of support. They throw new phones on the market like every two or three weeks or sth. I don't know if mediatek or xiaomi is the problem but i will stay away from both.
People ask for update on 6.0 and till today there's no official statement and no sources. I'm done with that. And I don't think that it is ok for that price and that we cannot complain or sth.

I agree with you totally... this phone was my WORST choice of my life I am totally upset and feel ambushed, because I bought this phone for great specs and the announce of marshmallow update..... But even we did not get any LOLLIPOP upgrade, like 5.1.1, and we stay on 5.0.2... this was my LAST chinese and MEDIATEK phone :/ I respect the developers, who started to make CM based rom for this device, without any source code, that is a really huge step forward! But for the MIUI and XIAOMI team and "developers"..... I don't give any respect for them!
Xiaomi firsts:
My first phone ever that started on one version of Android and never progressed beyond it.
My first phone ever where "updates" introduce more new faults and never fix a single existing one.
My first phone ever to have a battery fail within 12 months.
My first phone ever to be upstaged by a Ulefone in the quality stakes....
My last Hongmi (Xiaomi) toy phone ever
Xiaomi started by misleading the market with false advertising of things such as having a Samsung camera which quietly disappeared. Xiaomi then hailed the RN2 as a huge sales success and then went on to bury it almost instantly. It is not a Mediatek issue - why would anyone think so unless you believe the propaganda and ignorance floated on many forums? Mediatek make the chips, provide engineering samples of code for the requested O.S and their job is done unless paid to do more. Other brands have Android 6.0 for MT6795 no problems at all so it is a 100% Xiaomi problem. Why no 6.0 from Xiaomi? Because they used bargain basement /end of life / obsolete / clone or fake parts that have no ongoing support from the manufacturers.
Why can I put 100% functional 6.0 or 7.1.1 on a 2013 Moto G? Because it is made from genuine, reputable brand parts that had a long availability so have drivers available for later O.S versions.
I have Nougat on my nearly six-year old Samsung Galaxy SII, and MM on my three-year old Zopo. I am shocked to be stuck with a crappy 5.02 on a one-year old Xiaomi. The phone itself is behaving okay, but I think Xiaomi+MTK is not a good combination.
I agree with the comments. I am looking for a new phone that has lineageOS support so that when the manufacturer stops supporting at least you have a strong developer scene to continue support.
No more Xiaomi or MTK phone. Harsh lesson learnt.
Yes it was a hard lesson. And i also learnt that reading reviews with positive results doesn't mean it's a good decision because they only test it for a few days or weeks. But they don't know how bad the support will be or if the phone gets propper updates in future.
Having weekly or monthly miui updates doesn't mean anything because most of the time there are no or minor improvements that are not notable or even things getting worse. I don't like miui but i'm stuck with it because there are no decent custom roms possible.
If the updates would at least fix missing features like a dt2w function which even 70$ phones have then it would be something
I think Redmi Note 2 is not bad but quality is not good as my Redmi 1 before even Redmi 1 use mtk6589 CPU and Android update from 4.2 to 4.4
But Redmi Note 2 still no update
Also rn2 use a 13mp samsung s5k3m2 camera
But I think the photo quality is even worse My Redmi 1 , which use a 8mp s5k3h2/ov8825 sensor. I think Xiaomi use a fake s5k3m2 not a real one which letv 1s uses. So no 4k recording for this phone. Also , rn2 use 3060 mah battery but drains very fast , Redmi 1 use 2100 mah but very long life . Redmi 1 is also made by xiaomi in 2013 but quality is much better than most of new xiaomi/Redmi release at 2015 or later
Also Official Android update need Pass Google CTS
mtk6795 is supported but maybe some low quality parts in any makes rn2 cannot pass the CTS Certification. This is why Xiaomi 6795 cannot update and other 6795 can. Because they use good parts on new 6795 phones
Hope rn2 will pass the CTS and get Android update with miui 9

@bjsiu0617 RN2 does not have a Samsung camera - it is a fake / clone of the s5k3m2 which is why Samsung drivers from other phones will not work on the RN2 and why the picture quality is below that of genuine Samsung and Sony cameras. Early advertising claimed the camera was a Samsung but that was quickly changed after the initial sales were made. What more do you expect from a Chinese toy factory

My mum use Redmi Note 3 Snapdragon Version and my friend use mi max
Both of them use snapdragon 650 CPU which is good
But all other chips are cheap things and battery also drains like my rn2
My friend break his mi max because of careless drops even he used 3-proofs case and corning glass screen protector
And my mum's rn3sd microphone also broken suddenly luckily xiaomi customer repair it for free.
And WiFi drops on all of my rn2 , mum's rn3sd , and my friend's mi max because of bad WiFi chips I think
Sorry for my bad English I am a Chinese
@bjsiu0617 Thankyou for your fair appraisal of Xiaomi product in general (not just RN2). I am amazed by diehards who defend the brand in the face of bad report after bad report. Telling a lie often enough does not make it a truth but the power of propaganda is strong. I heard that Xiaomi is not very popular in China, is that correct?
@jajk We are living in a post-truth world, where fake news is treated as truth, and facts are labelled as fake news, especially by the leader of a certain country ...

Yes, Xiaomi is very popular in China , also Hong Kong and south Asia country's (I am a Hong Kong people , still a secondary student)
Xiaomi quality is not so bad before but I don't know why
Their quality drops after 2015. Also its C/P is high and hardware performance is not bad. I think Xiaomi drops since 2015 because Good Hardware become expensive and They want to use better CPU and main parts for more powerful
And they only can use cheap clone/fake chips on non-important parts for the phone continue cheap
I think xiaomi should use better chips even for non-important
Part. I not prefer they sell phones expensiver for this but quality is the first

LCD panel : tianma , auo or boe (mine luckily use the auo which is the best auo is good Taiwan panel) Tianma and boe are China clone panel which
Ulefone/outikel and shenzhen factory uses.
Battery : desay , a China company makes universal battery's for all phones. I think is a fxxking battery not real 3060mah.
Ram chip: this is good it uses Japan elpida or Korea sk hynix/Samsung. Mine use elpida one.
Light sensor: Taiwan ltr559 no special
Gyroscope: Bosch bmi160 a good Germany sensor but I think it is fake. Because a lot of no name mtk also use "bmi160"
Magnetic sensor: also a fake yahama yas537 there is no data sheet from japan yahama.
Touch panel : America atmel mxt366t or Taiwan focaltech ft 5346 (I use atmel one) atmel is good idk it is real or fake.
Focaltech no special.
Camera: fake s5k3m2 rear clone by China ofilm or sunny (I use ofilm) ov5670 front also clone by ofilm or sunny. (Also ofilm on mine)
CPU:mt6795 helio x10 (not bad but eats battery)
Emmc: fake Toshiba emmc 5.1 (I think is no name China emmc
But emmc 5.1 is real not emmc 4.0 or 4.2)
Wifi/bt/FM:mediatek mt6630 a 1t1r 2.4/5g 802.11a/b/g/n/Ac
Bt 4.1 and FM but it is bad for signal drops even it support 5g Ac wifi. All of mtk wlan combo chips is not good of signal drops. Broadcom bcm433x/435x or Qualcomm qca61xx is good.
(Only qca61xx is good for Qualcomm. Qualcomm WCN36xx is also bad)
Even single band 2.4g only realtek 8723bs combo is better than shxt mtk combo
I use this phone from October 2015. I'm happy with it overall. Yes, 6.0 sounds good but i preferred to use MIUI. So MIUI 5.0 or MIUI 6.0 it's the same thing for me.
I use last xiaomi.eu stable. The battery get me from 7 in the morning to 9:30 - 10 when i put to charge and i sleep. I get 2, 2:30 hours of SOT in a full day with dual sim, one permanently on 3G with active data connection.
Except that Mediatek CPU don't get updates, i'm happy with it. No lag, still usable for me in 2017.
I pay 320 euros for a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, a flagship tablet with Note 3 similar specs and time release. I buy with Android 4.4.2 and get update to 4.4.4. So a Samsung and a Snapdragon CPU don't get update. Xiaomi at least get latest security patch from google. So...
Maybe i'm a Xiaomi fan but that phone cost me 160 dollars and for that money i'm happy. That's a reason for S7 and iPhone 7 for 700 euro's price tag always. Don't except that for a 150 dollar phone. It's impossible. That's the truth. That's the reason why 700 dollars phone exists. Developers, quality services and other after-sale things cost money. Money that 150 dollars phone don't pay for the manufacturer.
Have a nice day and sorry for my bad English.

you said good I am also a Xiaomi fans. I talk on miui forum to decide them to make new Xiaomi/Redmi with better quality , even sell a little be expensiver. Also , I think I will still buy Xiaomi of my next phone but I must choice Xiaomi/Redmi models with Snapdragon CPU. I will not buy a new phone with mediatek again even it can get android update or release kernel source because mediatek cpus are strong on cpu but they use rubbish gpu and i2c controller also bad wifi chip. New Snapdragon 4xx/6xx and even 8xx is much cheaper and powerful than before

Letv (leeco) is a new brand
They also have some mediatek models
But they release kernel source for both mediatek and snapdragon devices.
Also hardware quality is better than xiaomi.
Example letv 1s is similar to redmi note 2
But it use CCI6795 platform which is custom made by leeco
Also letv 1s use good chips example real Samsung camera
And Samsung emmc also Japan AKM gyroscope and magnetic sensor. Display panel is JDI/SHARP.
Unlike redmi note 2 use LCSH6795 this is a common board platform which shenzhen company's also use such as ulefone/outikel/elephone.
A lot of fake/clone sensors are used in this phone such as cameras , gyroscope , magnetic sensor , emmc and Tianma , Boe displsy. Only the ram and one of the display panel (AUO) is a little be better.
So leeco quality is much better and letv 1s can successfully pass the Google CTS for Android update.
What about LeEco Le 2 X527 ?

Send a mail to Hugo and Xiaomi officials ask them about kernel sources,
If they refuse to release it don't buy it.
Without sources mediatek devices are pathetic, Xiaomi Redmi Note is still stuck with buggy KitKat, and will stuck forever, same will happen with you.
So ensure sources, without sources even xda will not help.
Best of luck !!

This is not for Redmi Note 3, every device has diff hw although CPU is same , s you need your drivers from Xiaomi.
Ask Xiaomi for source, and they will not provide.
Don't fall in Xiaomi's trap.

So whats the trap.
Get a good device for 200 bugs? Okay it would be better with all thedriver sources released but it is Kind of a flGship killer.
AMD what you expect for that price. A device that beats the crap out of an IPhone 6s?
I need a new Smartphone ( my nexus 5 fell into the water, it still works but slowly dies) and you dont get a better bang for the buck right now. And I think we will get the driver source soon.

Xiaomi is known for excellent hw with poor sw , check Mi pad 1, an awesome hw with very very poor sw without kernel sources, gives very poor performance and Xiaomi do not care.

Hi, (gold, 32gb, redmi note3 5.0.2,MIUI7
MUI 77.0.11.0 215 EURO with shiping)
I will try to give you my feedback, it's my own personal view of the redmi note 3, first some background:
I'm a tech guy, i started using android with one of the first HTC Desire Bravo, i used to root my phones, flash roms, try, optimise as much as possible.
I have brought this phone for my wife, who had previously two Samsung S4, since redmi note3 is dual SIM, it work out quite nice.
I own a Samsung Note 4 , and i will compare the redmi note3 32gb fairly.
the phone costed me 215EUR, it's a flagship, and for that price it's very cheap!
the phone look beautiful, it has an aluminium body, the finition is perfect, the gold (champagne) color is very nice. the aluminium body is very sleepery.
it lack a SD card, which will force you to take the 32gb model (hello 2016)
battery is non removable, but it's more than 4000mAH, it hold with 2 sim cards and full backlight a full day
LCD would be rated 4.5/5 , not the best quality, but almost.
NO Screen protection, honestly if your phone is falling from time to time, do not buy this phone, the LCD will die, buy a housing to get some grip.
the phone is fast for normal apps, messengers, Instagram, phone apps (dialler, phone-book, calendar)
The camera is 13MB pixel in 4/3 format, it's a 10MB pixel in 16/9 format, the camera is not really good, btw i don't understand why xiaomi doesn't set the camera immediately for best quality, you had to go and set both camera by yourself.
same for front camera, not really good, it's a 5MB at 4/3 format, and 3MB on 16/9.
MUI work good, it's fast, some notifications from time to time never appear, i didn't figure out why yet.
Honestly for me that a great phone, because i don't care about the camera and i use my phone for work, but since it's for my wife, she like to do pictures, selfies, and that phone is no good at that point, her old Samsung S4 is doing much better pictures, and that is kinda the deal breaker.
I would recommend this phone to people who don't care about the cameras, it's cheap, look crazy nice, DUAL SIMS.
IF you like to take pictures of any kind, don't waste your time, it is no good.
IF your phone is likely to fall, avoid it, no screen protection, or at least buy some housing.
I like MUI btw, my gf doesn't like it to much, but she doing better every day.
The charger is trash, it's a 0.35mAH, it charge 5% per hour LOL, never seen worse, get your old charger back, or buy a new one immediately.
I forgot to say in my review that the phone is not rooted, but there is a app .apk that root the device in 2min easy and friendly(it''s in chiness, but keep hitting the green button),
Best regards guys!
(hit the thanks button if you like it)

Thanks for sharing your first impressions! I dont know which rom you are using but I know that other people reporting camera improvements with the latest rom.
Kind regards
Miui7
mui 77.0.11.0
Hi,
i have got my note 3 before christmass. With the same ROM 77.0.11.0 as Lisendra. Got it in a GDA for 199€ with DHL shipping, cover and tempered glass screen protection.
The "original" rom had some bugs, I was unable to sincronize the contacts from gmail etc.
A guy on italian forum helped me with a hint about a custom ROM, the first one was a developer, the second one latest stable 7.0.22.0
It doesnt support OTA, so you have to use flashtool, but the flashing is pretty easy, it comes with ROOT and it is cleaned from the scrap chinese apps.
[ROM] [Stable] SphinX V1d - MIUI7 V7.0.22.0 Global, Multi Language, SuperSU
Since I installed that one, the phone does greatly. There are already guides to unlock bootloader, but to instal this ROM you dont need to do so.
For that money it is really a great phone. My old Galaxy S3 seems to be a toy, compared to this. Signal reception is very good (althought LTE band 20 is missing, so i dont have LTE where I live, but in the towns downhill it works pretty good in LTE). GPS (gps, glonass and the chinese satelites) locks really fast.
With 1 SIM the phone is able to work for 2 full days (until the evening of the second day - with the screen ON for about 5 hours).
After 2 weeks of experience, I would buy it again.
I have been using the new Xiaomi mi5 since 1 Month now, and the LG G5 since 5 days. I can notice big difference for the favor of the Xiaomi. Its faster, smoother, no overheating, battery life extremely better. And even the 3GB version of the Xiaomi i have scored a higer score on the antutu benchmark
I wanted to share my experience with you guys, and we could discuss pros and cons of each device and maybe your votes to keep the Xiaomi or the LG
Thanks
i have both too and would say the LG G5 is a tad more fluid and software much more optimised.

Didn't you notice the battery life difference between both for the exact same way of use? I found MIUI a totally different experience of android, not ideal, but different. The screen resolution under the sun light as well is favored by Xiaomi more than the LG. I am having this overheated LG which is not to be noticed on Xiaomi ( except when charging). Don't forget the price difference as well

maybe the UK LG G5's are from a good batch beause i noticed none of the moulding or heating issues... also EE in the UK are selling the LG G5 for £399 which makes it as cheap as the Mi5 and at that price I'd go with the LG as it supports all European LTE bands.

Camera ? That alone rules the mi out if it matters to you.
The only chinese company that has a chance here is huawei. Not xiaomi or opo.
if you're into performance and roming then stick to those two. They are great for the price.
Battery has been improving on the xiaomi's. The redmi note 3 is excellent for battery.
But sealed battery and no expandable storage are deal breakers for me.

Huawei? i won't be that sure dude. After my experience with Mate 8 i won't repeat this experience again with Huawei. I am not that into chinese handsets, but the Xiaomi mi5 changed my mind somehow. They did great in this device. I am not a camera guy, so i didn't even take it into consideration. Performance and personalized UI is what counts for me. Running both devices on antutu benchmark, the mi5 (32GB, 3GB RAM) scored 108K and fractions, and the G5 (32GB, 4GB RAM) scored 103K and fractions.
My personal opinion is that after the MI5, Xiaomi will overtake Huawei in selling numbers coming after Samsung and Apple. First sale wave 4 Mil. sold devices whereas G5 launching day in S. Korea 150K sold.
Last but not least, this opens the market more for competition among manufacturers which results in something good for us users.

Exactly, if you don't appreciate camera, don't care for expandable storage or replacable battery, then G5 isn't going to impress you.
Each device has its own forte. otherwise its like comparing a cow & a horse and saying the horse is better because it runs faster
xiaomi's & opo's forte is price. For the price you get x,y,z. Always this qualifier 'for the price' is used to describe these phones. This is why people run after them. Huawei isn't in the same price range so not much interest but this is a demographic that isn't going to look at flagships in the first place. Huawei has been creating waves of late and has the resources to pull it off. To sell in the west they are best placed. So they are also looking dangerous to the big 3. Your bad experience with the mate 8 is an anecdote. i can find any number of people in these forums that does not like a paritcular device for some reason or other. Does not make the device nor the company that made that device bad.
You go on about performance but anything with an SD800 and above has enough performance in 2016. People are not going to replace their phones because of low antutu score. They will do it if it lags and if the firmware becomes incapable for whatever reason of delivering what they want.
The competition is good but i would have preferred they not make sealed batteries and no expandable storage. Which flagship in 2016 will not have expandable storage. Only the nexus. Am surprised you did not even mention this. From what i can see all the big 4 have it. Cheaper phones have always included them and to not find them on flagships is odd. here its a reverse situation. When the flagships have it this so called affordable flagship refuses to have it. Why. because it looks pretty ?
As it is we are held back by OS upgrades .Anything less than a flagship means the device you buy dies with whatever OS it came with. To then add extra hardware limitations so as to force you to upgrade every couple of years isn't encouraging.
Oh i know that mi & opo are good with updates.Just have to be patient. When i hang out in those forums sometimes important bugs can take months to fix if at all. You don't get this with the bigger names. We will pretend the S6 memory fiasco did not happen. You have an idea what it is at the outset not several months later. You pay more because you are not a paying beta tester.
There is one thing i will grant these chinese phones and that is root is not a big deal. Click here to root. Amazing. The weird thing about phones compared to computers is you are not allowed to become admin for some reason. You are the owner of the device but you cannot really own it. No problems with locked bootloaders etc.
Whereas if you don't have a euro G5 there is no chance to root because all other bootloaders are locked by LG. Major deal breaker for some people. We're not even talking about roms here. Just root.

All your points you discussed are logical, but POVs' are relative. Otherwise if we all have same opinion or POV then all will buy same device, but each individual looks at things from different perspective.
I am not against any device or manufacturer, i am just reflecting my experience with the devices. I am not comparing paper values, rather personal usage and experience. This only reflects mu POV according to how i use and what i like to use in a phone.
Expandable memory? Mmmmm, Apple doesn't have, Nexus, Xiaomi as well. Maybe they have a marketing strategy behind it,thats why they are making devices with 128GB Internal memory. ( except Nesus).
I have the T-Mobile LG G5 and it will take quite looong time before any development will be out there. Unlocking bootloader, rooting, and ROM's.
Because i liked both devices, i am keeping both as well the G5 and Mi5 It's just the experience i have with MI5, it gave a new and different experience which i liked and respect from a company 6 years old, and i have been using android phones for the past 10 years.

IT's actually faster, it does more things at once. Comparing the foreground app as an indication of a machine's "speed" is false on so many levels. It's very much possible on (any) android machine to do many things at once, something that iOS expressively disallows, apart from very few "approved" services (like music playing).
So yeah, things happen faster to an Android machine, even if it is 2 years old, it *feels* less fast though...
Market share as it stands right now. Xiaomi is going to have to vault past two other Chinese vendors that have more resources to get to 3rd place. Those two aren't standing still.

Tough choice.
The Mi 5 is physically smaller than the G5. +1 for the Mi 5
The Mi 5 has a 1080p screen with a 3,000mAh battery vs the G5's QHD screen with a tiny 2,800mAh battery. +1 for the Mi 5
LG's custom Android ROM isn't as bad as the one from Xiaomi. +1 for the G5
The Mi 5 has a physical home button vs the on screen buttons of the G5. +1 for the G5
The G5 is made by LG while the Mi 5 is made by Xiaomi. +1 for the G5.
Mi 5: 2
G5: 3
But the combination of bigger battery and lower resolution of the Mi 5 is a BIG plus.

Wow, I'm really surprised how low LG is. I realize LG is smaller than Samsung and Apple but with Apple at ~18% and Samsung at ~24% I would have guessed like 10-12% for LG.
Just a 2800 mAh battery for a 5.3 QHD display phone ? Seriously LG ? Replacable battery is a plus but how often would you replace it ?

By the way, in Q1 the Mi5 had only the first selling wave which was i think somewhere between 9 -12 March. So we have to wait until Q2 to see how they do especially after they release all other colors and the 128 GB version as well.
Why would anyone want the Mi5 after seeing this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2jav7UdQtE
It breaks like a toothpick.
3000 mAh is ok, but a 2800 compared to it is "tiny", LOL.

Not a tough choice, rather easy in fact.
Camera is why you will choose the G5.
Budget is why people run after the Chinese. They can't spend more than $350. Some arbitrary number. They will compromise any requirement to fit into that budget. And the design is pretty good, they say why pay $200-300 more for a phone that 'looks' and 'feels' similar. Then they will quote you some specs and say see i got same cpu for so little. lol.
You can get up to 5h SOT on the G5 with always on off. If you need more get a spare battery. Now you can get 10h if necessary. Takes one minute to replace the battery. You will need to do this if you use the camera a lot any way.

LG is a conglomerate that sells lots of other things. That they could even get that much share is good. Not being in that list does not affect companies that make phones or even new ones from joining. In the sense the top players make the most profit. But if you're a smaller player and still making a profit there is no problem.

yep, 6% and its the end of the world
6.0.1 has been good for battery life. Even the S6 with its ZOMG 2600 non-replacable battery has benefited.
So I found leaks of the MIUI 8 for our phone (one was 6.6.12 and one was 6.6.14). Both are in Chinese and I guess we will have to wait until 17th June to see the full version. Unfortunately by the posts on miui forums and the build.prop it looks like we won't be getting Android M anytime soon.
What is even worse (at least as I see it) we will be staying on the old Android 5.0.2 (not even 5.1) and to my knowledge we don't have any useful sources for building Marshmallow ROMs.

Woooow that's awesome.... (pls..) I think we will never get Marshmallow because of Mediatek closed sources
Remember that HTC A9 has the same Mediatek chipset and somehow received Marsmellow so it is not impossible at most. Let's hope that Xiaomi wont leave this phone without ANY system update, otherwise milions of users will be pissed off and may think twice befor buying their next device.

what version of miui 8? 8.6.6.12 or 6.6.14
this is the last time i bought a phone with mediatek or xiaomi. i hate miui but because they don't release the source codes developers cannot produce decent custom roms. The camera of CM romsis awful andAosp is also not very good. most important is allowing double tap to wake but they don't even allow us this feature to have. My power button reacts really bad because i have to push is so often. I don't care if I have Miui 8, 9, 20 or anything. They should at least update to Marshmallow so we can have some progress. It is so annoying. We live in the year 2016 and there is no real communication or information comming from xiaomi to the users. This is so sad and annoying
they talk too much about MIUI8 , but still using 5.0.2? what's wrong with xiaomi?
even they don't want to release kernel source, so it is small chance for someone to build CM13

HTC A9 has Snapdragon 617, not Mediatek processor.
I think it should be pretty clear by now that if excellent 3rd party ROM support is really important to you, you should steer clear of the Xiaomi+Mediatek combination. That combination produces an amazing price+performance ratio, and is almost unbeatable at that. However, with such low costs and margins, it is unrealistic to expect the kind of development/support that exists for the more expensive devices (i.e., you get what you pay for).
Personally, I am not complaining about lack of sustained development support. I do not like the fact that we are stuck with 5.02 - but I went for the RN2 with my eyes wide open (and probably so did most people who chose to buy it). Battery life could be better - but the same goes for expensive iPhones. The camera could be better, but it is good enough for most things. The device is reasonably well specced, very cheap, reasonably fast, and there are some reasonably good cooked ROMs in this forum. It is an excellent medium-range device, at an entry-level price and with an entry-level support. Premium, it is most certainly not. So what is it realistic to expect? There is always the OnePlus 3 ...
Bottom line: anyone who is really keen on excellent 3rd party ROM support should go for a Snapdragon device. It will cost you more, but you will get what you pay for.

So you are saying ''well you didn't pay much so you have no right to complain''? Sorry but I think we can expect a descent communication and that we get informed properly from xiaomi. Mm was annouced month ago but till today nobody knows for sure if we will get it. And allowing gestures is not too much to ask for. The device is technically able for that but we don't get this feature or the codes to develope it. I had a cubot x9. It was cheaper than the rn2 but it had this feature. And it was a MTK device too. I'm not that much that it has to offer all that a 700$ device does.

My point is that I am realistic in my expectations. Having a cheaper Cubot that does different (or more) things is beside the point. We bought a cheap phone with a particular ROM installed. I did not expect to be able to change that ROM, or for it to be updated frequently (or even at all). If I could not have lived with what it came with, I would not have bought it. For every person here who wants to change his ROM, there are millions who do not know what a ROM is, or who could not care less. For every person here who would like kernel sources (I certainly would), there are tens of millions who have no idea what a kernel is, and who really do not care. That is why someone can sell the phone so cheaply. By all means, complain if you must - but I doubt that anyone in China is listening!
Hi guys,
currently im looking for a new device to replace my old Nexus5.
I'm often on the road and use the phone for music and navigation and
the device should last one whole day with heavy usage. Also the camera
should produce decent pictures at daylight (and at night if possible).
I dont play any games on my phone but use many apps. The gps
should work quite good cause I'd use my phone for bike trips etc. as well
and need the tracking of my route.
Budget
- 200€ +-
Must Haves
- 5"-6"
- EU-LTE frequences with B20
- 64GB
- fast fingerprint sensor
- good camera (day n night)
- quality processing
Nice2Have
- USB-C
- protection against splash water
- micro-sim slot
- bezel-less design
Not rly important
- headphone jack
My favorites
1. Elephone S8
2. Vernee Mix 2
3. Doogee Mix 2
4. Umidigi S2
5. Xiaomi Mi A1
There would be no problem if the MiA1 would have the battery of the umidigi and the design of the elephone. But at the moment I have no idea which phone to take.
there isnt much information about the doogee mix2 but if this device would have a decent camera sensor with a functional bouquet mode I'd take this.
Are there any alternatives in this price range (+50€ maybe)?
If you have to decide between those phones, which one you would take and why?
Are there any points of criticism for those brands or phones?
Hope this is the correct forum.
Thanks for your help,
Cheerio
I have had an elephone p6000 and a umi super in the past, I can not really recommend some of these companies (also based on some of your requirements)
Elephone: This company has not been providing good software support in the past. They provided a few updates then abandoned the device in favour of the next one. The camera wasn't too great either despite being advertised as a quality sensor with decent resolution for the time (not top tier, but higher than other phones in the same budget range) - but it made acceptable shots. So I had about 6 months of software support and during that time the low build quality showed itself as the volume rocker started to get flakey. When I was looking to get a new phone, the Elephone S8 was also in my list of possible candidates but for me imediatelly lost out due to it not sporting a 3.5mm headphone jack (you don't mind, though) or a microSD card slot (I am not entirely sure if that's what you meant when you said micro-sim as pretty much every device nowadays will sport a micro or nano sim slot anyways)
UMIDIGI: Now, the build quality of my phone wasn't perfect from the beginning, there were rough edges around the antenna lines but all in all the device felt solid. They supported the device for about 12 months with updates which didn't seem too bad to me. However, the phone had a major drawback: Despite allegedly sporting a 13Mp panasonic sensor, the camera was *horrible*. All over the review sites you found people claiming the camera was decent, but it was not., it would only work in bright light and if it wasn't ideal you could not actually make out anything on the pictures. And, as it turned out, the build quality of the device was not only mediocre on the outside, but obviously even worse on the inside as my screen failed electronically after about 12 months. I have seen a few other people with the same issue on the Super and I have already seen one report on the UMIDIGI S2 forums with people having the exact same fault after 2 weeks with their S2. So be careful if you decide to get one of those. Reports on the internet also mention that the camera on the S2 is horrible. Now I can't confirm this, but to me it seems that UMIDIGI is always hyping their cameras and can't deliver.
Either way, I'd recommend to get a device with a Qualcomm chipset (snapdragon) over a Mediatek chipset (Helio) as Mediatek doesn't release their sourcecode most of the time which results in little to no support for custom roms but that's something you have to decide.
I can't really say much about the Vernee or Dogee devices but on german forums I have found a few mentions that Vernee quality can be hit and miss as well.
wow thank you very much for your interesting and helpflu answer. I also read realy bad reviews about the brands especially about the early products but cherished the hope that they improved the quality of the newer devices.

I guess it's the same with the S2. I've watched several reviews on youtube or elsewhere and the pictures don't impress me much. The IMX268 is way better than the sensor in the Super but still not as good as the sensor of the Mi A1 (in my opinion).

Obviously, the Mi A1 would be the one I'd recommend but I might be biased since that's the one my decission fell to. I was looking for one of the "tri-bezeless" phones as well, but none fit my needs. To me the A1 was pretty much the perfect fit for my needs.
Here's the points that drove me towards the Mi A1:
-I have had good experiences with other xiaomi branded products in the past, from my mi band to the xiaomi piston headphones and powebanks. Their build quality seems solid so I figured I'd try one of their "more pricey" product ranges
-USB Type C Connection
-Micro SD Slot
-Full HD Display (a few of the phones with slim to no bezels only had a 720p display like, for example, the UMIDIGI S2)
-Snapdragon Chipset
-Android One UI (prefer that over MIUI, which I tried on my Elephone in the past)
-Promised support for 18 months which, given the xiaomi brand, I feel confident will actually come to fruition
-3.5mm headphone jack without a clunky, losable adapter.
-decent camera that takes good pictures
Based on your list, the Mi A1 seems like a very good fit, too. It has all your must-haves and two of your "nice-to-haves" (USB C and Micro SD). The camera quality might be subjective, but I find the camera to be rather good, particularly at the price point the device sells for.

I guess I will wait for some reviews of the Doogee but if a good offer for the MiA1 will occure in this period I'll buy this phone as well.
How long lasts the battery with heavy usage?

As usage always varies from user to user, you might want to check the "real life reviews" part of the mi a1 forums, there's a topic about battery life. Now for me, I have taken the device off the charger about 6 hours ago and my battery is down to 88%. I am not a heavy user, bluetooth is enabled permanently, and I was checking emails and messages a few times per hour. No huge screen-on-time, though.
The battery was the one thing I was worried about (coming from the 4000mAh in my UMI device), but it turns out the 3000mAh battery of the A1 performs about the same as my previous phone due to the chipset seemingly being more power efficient.

Sounds really nice. Did you read something about the Meizu M6? I guess its nearly as good as the MiA1 with a bigger battery.
Nevertheless I tend to buy the MiA1 and a small powerbank because it seems to be superior to the M6 in nearly every other point.
Thank you very much for your qualified help, I really appreciate that.

I just checked the Meizu M6, doesn't really seem like a comparison to the Mi A1. The devices are very similar in terms of performance but the 4Gb/64Gb version of the Meizu seems to run well above $300, only the 3/32Gb version seems to be in the price range you mentioned. A short review I found in german mentions that the cameras are pretty much on par with the A1 actually the review notes that the A1 has a better daylight perfomance on the camera, with night shots on the Meizu are apparently a lot better. Also the larger battery capacity sounds interesting.
Overall it sounds like a possible alternative, but it wouldn't convince me. The Flyme UI looks similarly clunky to MIUI, judging from screenshots and I can't understand why they decided to go with a weird camera setup (12Mp + 5Mp dual rear camera, 16Mp front camera). I guess it's intended for selfie lovers. Again, it depends on your use case apparently
Recently my current phone (Leeco LeTv Max 2) died on me, therefore, I am currently looking looking for a new phone, and after searching online for a good Android phone, I found that brand name phones like Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, Google Pixel 3, and Huawei P30 Pro are expensive and the only phones that meet my budget are OnePlus 6T and Xiaomi Mi 9, the problem with OnePlus 6T that its camera is not that good as Xiaomi Mi 9, but when I search for the best Android phones online I found that OnePlus 6T is one of at leas the best 5 phones while Xiaomi Mi 9 is not even there, maybe it is new and it is not reviewed for most of rating website, so would you please recommend one for me in you know these phone, I have to buy one ASAP, thanks in advance.
Personally I'd say go for Mi 9 just an all round better device or even wait for OP7 at this point OP6T is not worth it.
Mi 9 Has SD855 More Efficient, Better Display (HDR10 Certification), Camera Sensors/Software, Better Speaker, 20w Wireless Charging, 27w Fast Charging.
But if you have a chance try both devices and see which suits you the most.

As far as specs go, I'd say the Xiaomi MI 9 is better. Does it matter buying new or used? You can get barely used 6T for 300-400 now. 7T will be out in a few months. I think the MI 9 is $600 or so. I was in the same position didn't want to spend a lot. So I picked up a 6T and a MI 8. MI 8 should arrive tomorrow. I'm going to compare the two for a daily. I have a brand new P20 PRO which I think is better than both that I need to get rid of. If you need now right now and cant wait then MI 9. If you can wait I say 7T. Or find a cheaper used 6T or MI 8 and wait for the 7T to compare to the MI 9.
I was thinking either to go to MI 9 (which I like a lot) or wait for the 7T, then I decided to wait, but now the 7T is released and the price is high, then suddenly while I was searching for a deal in our local online shopping site, I found a new Google Pixel 3 XL with only 700 CAD, which I found I deal that couldn't be rejected, so I bought it and so far I am happy, but my heart is still with the MI 9 which I think if will buy another phone in the future it would be it.
Get the Mi 9, it has better camera, better SOC, better GPS, faster charging, wireless charging, etc. The only cons are MIUI (depends on your taste), smaller battery, and slightly slower FP.
I'm starting to regret my OP 6T purchase, i got this phone 2 months ago. Now I can get a Mi 9 for $150 cheaper.
Op7
Does the Mi work in Verizon? Not sure where you are located....I really need to get away from them, VZW sucks.
I'm pretty impressed with the Mi phone and specs.
If xiaomi mi9, only 12 GB version (that might worth because of later-coming custom roms), 6 Gb will be a pain to use in some years. I had a xiaomi phone and I loved it because of the good hardware and the great developers of xda who made amazing roms and tweaks for my device, but it was not even a week old when I rooted and changed miui to stock android. When it comes to xiaomi, os is the weakest point, so even with the newer hardware mi9 performs on the same level as oneplus 6t just because op has a great software. You see the difference of chipsets when you are rendering videos, but on daily usage and gaming they are on the same level.
Mi9 is good, but if you want to buy a phone for longer time, oneplus is more future-proof than xiaomi.
One more pro thing for oneplus compared to mi9: battery life. 6t has much better SOT than mi9 or even op7 pro (90hz, max brightness -> disappointing battery life).
Mi9 for the price, for the harware. Many users love Miui.
6T for hardware, second hand price is great, but most important os & soft updates.
7 pro. awesome phone. Good hardware & software. Expensive. And of course, better screen = uses more baterry.

1. 12 GB worth for future custom roms?
Why are you saying that? This is absolutely not true.
2. Did you ever compare development of a mi 8 vs a oneplus 6t?
Xiaomis mi and the main redmi series are one of the most developed devices on XDA.
They have a big dev community from India.
3. The battery of the 6t is clearly not much better than the mi9.
Maybe you can show some adequate test results for comparison to proof that.
They are equal when it comes to battery life.

Who knows what future android versions will need? Apps and android are growing, they want more space, more ram, and so on, and I am not thinking in one-two year term, rather 4-5 and be honest: noone want their great flagship to be a laggy piece of crap 3-4 years later. Most people buy flagships because they are designed to be future-proof. 12 GB will guarantee fluid multitasking for years and you don't have to worry about anything. 6 GBs is only enough if you want to upgrade in 1-2 years and if you are paying monthly for the device yes this is an option, but I am not one of those. I just said if I woulf buy a mi9, which version would I choose (and if we see that even this is cheaper than OP, than yes this is an option). Why didn't I choose that? Software and battery.
I said also that I had a xiaomi phone and I know that this brand (not only mi, also redmi series) has the most developed topics in xda (that is why I used my redmi for 3 years because the devs ported great roms and on the forums even noobs like me found actual support) and to be honest migrating to oneplus forums full of crying was a huge disappointment after that. But facts are facts, Mi9 has a smaller battery with not-so-well optimized ROM (3300 mAh is not more, not less and MIUI is a heavy os), result: it will not last as long as the 6t and I am one of those who want their phone to last till the end of the day even with heavy usage.
I did not say one is better than the other, because everyone has their personal preferences what decides which one fits better for someone. They are on the same level when it comes to performance, I mentioned the differences pro and contra both, so I don't understand why are you complaining. Facts are facts: OP has a bigger battery, a better software, and this software keeps it future-proof in my eyes. Mi9 has newer hardware, wireless charging and a good developer community. It depends on people what they choose.
I tell you what was my problem with xiaomi and why I won't buy that brand again: stock software updates. When I see that even OP3 gets android Pie from the company, and xiaomi cannot upgrade even their last year midrange phones' android version (even if the hardware would be fully capable), that is disappointing.
I am talking about this: https://www.theandroidsoul.com/xiaomi-android-9-pie-update/
And this: https://www.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-redmi-6-6a-s2-y2-android-pie-cancelled/
Mi series are on different level, but scroll down to redmi series. Most of "not eligible" phones have the capable hardware if not all of them. Mine is not even on the list, it was released with MM and cancelled at MM (!!).
Two years later Mi9 owners will know that, but maybe that is why they are so well supported on XDA. I came to custom roms because of xiaomi, and I started to love these forums because of xiaomi.
But I want what normal people want: when I buy a phone, I want real software support from the company, and I want every single component of the software working in my country. Miui cannot give me that (although I had global version), most of the features were useless bloatware in my area. Different people in different countries will have different experiences. I just told you mine. Maybe I want too much. Sorry for that.

I asked you for a solid proof (but please no useless youtube noob video or something) that 6T's battery is lasting much longer. If you tell me something about battery sizes, then I can clearly say, that you don't understand how a phone is working.
Even when it comes to the RAM thing, with more is better, etc. Your phone won't get more 'laggy' just because you have 4 or 6 GB RAM nowadays. This won't change in 3-4 years either, if you have 6 or 12 GB RAM. You can have 12 GB RAM today and your phone will not be able to hold all apps in the RAM, if the RAM management and the application is not optimized.
I did not say anything against the longtime support by the company, but if he is willing to use custom ROMs (at least he is already here on XDA) the support with newest android updates won't be much different, especially when it comes to flagship devices.
Finally I did not argue against your recommendation. That is your personal thing.
I had a problem with your arguments.

Ok, so I turn the question: can you give me a solid proof that I am wrong and the solid numbers are lying? I used miui, I know that the standby tim is great but what about actually using the phone? That one just melts away.
About the ram thing: check the ram usage on your device. On mine it is averagely more than 4 gbs, if there is less than one gb free ram on a 6 gbs phone it becomes laggy because it deaperately wants to free some space while you just want to use your phone. Also that is my 10 years experience in Android phones.
About the support difference: I just told you above, read again.
Just happened to see this thread and realize it's a bit old now but anyways...
I have a OnePlus 6 currently, long story short several weeks ago the screen shattered and I needed a new phone. Thought about just fixing the 6 but decided to pick up the global mi 9 as spec wise and cost it was a great deal. Fast forward>>>> the mi 9 is currently on swappa and I'm waiting for my oneplus 6t, using a shattered 6. After waiting 360 hours to unlock the bootloader and get root so I could actually comfortably use the phone (not getting into a debate on privacy, I didn't care for all the intrusive crap on the mi 9) it was a let down but the final straw was really my fault for not really checking what lte bands TMobile was using around me, but besides that I, personally couldn't get adjusted to MIUI as it's anything but intuitive. The cameras were not really that great, the speed difference even between my 6 wasn't really noticable and I just wanted out. I thought about waiting for the Asus Zenfone 6 but I couldn't, not with the mi 9. I'll make due with the older 6t until I decide to upgrade again. From software, actual usage of the phone, weight, and tho it's still fairly new, lack of any development (I'm pretty sure that will change shortly) the mi 9 was not for me.
I would take op7 even it has worse camera. I cant work with miui
The "budget model" OP7 will be released soon.
In my opinion a perfect choice since OP7 iron out the few flaws of OP6t: better camera, stereo speakers and also benefit from OP7Pro: fastest CPU, 3.1 storage, better fingerprint sensor, etc.
Well, you don't get the fancy resolution in OP7pro, but you will get a much better battery life, and even greater battery SOT than OP6t (due to 855 use less energy than 845) and the price is 25% less the pro version.
In my opinion the optimal choice.
