Switching Nougat ROMs - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

So, I am on the super duper Nougat rom by ambassadii but wanted to try out Helios. Can I just flip from Nougat rom to Nougat rom at will or, like the warning in Helios suggested, do I need to go back to stock everytime?

bump

Best is that you reinstall the stock firmware..

no. you can flash whatever you want. I've flashed helios over MM custom.. Guess what: No problem.

Did you enable OEM in dev options?
Did you Go to [Wipe] -> [Format Data] (not advanced wipe) -> type "yes".?
reflashed the TWRP with Odin > TWRP allow system modifications > wipe data> reboot recovery > allow system modification> wipe data, system, cache, dalvik/art > flashed 'dm-verity and force encryption disabler' > flashed 'super-su' > flashed Custom ROM
But if OEM isn't unlocked it will never work and you need to reflash a stock ROM with Odin and start again.

Can't get into recovery :( would appreciate some help

Hello everyone,
yes i tried the search, but i really could not find anything matching my problem
I want so gift my S4 to a friend for christmas and wanna do a full wipe + new custom rom (currently sitting on Ressurection Remix Remix 5.5.5)
When i try to enter TWRP i get stuck at the teamwin screen
I've tried the following:
- flash older TWRP again via Odin
- install newest TWRP again via TWRP Manager App
- flashing Stock Recovery (could not even get into anything, bootloop)
Any suggetions how to solve this problem?
Sorry for any grammar/vocabulary mistakes. English is not my first language
Try flashing stock rom. That also includes the stock recovery. Then reflash twrp.

Unless you want to stay on the stock rom, or want to backup some apps, then no. Rooting will not be necessary if you plan on changing to a custom rom again.
rooted my s4 again,
twrp is finally working
but i cant flash the rom
Error executing updater binary in zip
anyone has an idea?

Are you using the latest version of twrp?

That error is caused because the recovery thinks the rom is not compatible with your phone.
Make sure your phone is compatible with the rom.
Or try these steps I found online:
1. Advance Wipe > Wipe cache, data, system, dalvik partitions.
2. Select ZIP file of your ROM and flash it.
3. You will get E:Error executing updater binary in zip (Don’t panic!)
4. Go to Reboot menu > Select Reboot to recovery.
5. After rebooting in recovery, flash the ZIP file of the ROM again WITHOUT WIPING.
Then it should work, according to the site I found it on.
The execution error indicates that the phone may not be supported by the ROM you're trying to flash..

Acquiring root after Temasek's CM 13 marshmallow install

Hello, I've recently installed Temasek's CM 13 nightly marshmallow build to my bootloader unlock note 3. I'm having a difficult time acquiring root after the install. I've flashed SuperSu to no avail. I've even tried the Aramaic tool method with no luck. Is there anything I can do to get root back on this phone or am I screwed?
Look for SuperSU in the settings menu.
Not sure if you need to turn on developer options for it to appear there or not.
[Edit]Did you install CM with a custom recovery, or with flashfire?
Your post doesn't say one way or another, but if you have an unlocked bootloader you can flash a custom recovery using Odin... meaning that you always have root, so long as you preserve the unlocked bootloader.
Having only a single root (locked bootloader and no custom recovery) and using FlashFire to install a ROM puts you at constant risk of root loss.
.
Thanks for your reply. I have TWRP 3.0.2 installed. I didn't check to see if it was installed under settings but I have since restored back to my stock rooted ROM. I will reinstall CM again and let you know if SuperSu shows up in settings.

Hey.
Just to make sure I'm being clear - you do have to flash SuperSU along with the ROM flash - root is not "baked in" to CM.
For some reason CM "hides" the SuperSU app so that it only shows up in the Settings menu and not in the app drawer.
It wasn't clear from the way you described things if that's what was going on, but I remember having the same (?) experience ... I thought the install of SuperSU was somehow missing due to the fact it didn't show up in the app drawer.

I've just tried reinstalling the cm13 ROM again and this time I checked to see if SuperSu was installed in settings. It didn't show up there either. I don't know what's going on with it. I wipe everything then flashed the ROM then wiped dalvik and cache. Then flashed open Gapps. Wiped dalvik and cache and flashed 2.78 SuperSu and reboot to system.

I don't know if this would make a difference, but somewhere in that thread trader418 mentioned that you had to flash the ROM after the Gapps to take care of an issue with some init.d scripts. As in the sequence: wipe - ROM - gapps - ROM - supersu - first_boot.
I'm not sure if that's related or not. It's been long enough ago that I can't remember the exact details, but I remember thinking "hey, where did it go, I know I flashed it!".
Maybe it would be best to ask this question in that thread.

I have reverted back to MIUI 8(8.0.3 malmidg),for some reasons, but I was unable to install the OTA for 8.0.8.0 via twrp.so I mounted the system part read only in twrp and installed mi land recovery available in mi forum...Now when I am installing OTA it shows "Installing MIUI update",but nothing updates.Pls help me to solve this problem..any one here with same problem??pls reply how you recovered..Thanx.
yea for some reason installing OTA's even with fireflash is a issue, id like to install otas on my stock miui v8 weekly with root and unlocked BL
first, you should have 2 things:
1. Stock recovery.img, (taken from fastboot rom)
2. Stock Rom (Stable/ Dev)
How To:
1. Copy it to internal storage
2. Go to TWRP, wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik/art cache.
3. Flash Stock Rom and then reboot.
4. @ home, reboot to recovery again (go to updater app to do this), after on TWRP, flash stock recovery, then reboot again to system.
5. @ home, goes to updater, flash again stock rom with it. (open option, choose choose update package)
6. Well, you should have OTA right now.
It works on mine.

Once you unlock the bootloader, it stays unlocked. I've switched back and forth between MIUI, CM13 and RR but my bootloader was never locked.

Better stay at china dev, it has native root. So if you want to get twrp, root, than flash twrp.img via flashify.
Or, if on global/stable, flash twrp via fastboot

Stuck in bootloop trying to flash 7.1 custom rom

My phone is android 6.0 and I've been using "TruPureXMM 2.9" ever since it first came out. I have a February 1, 2016 android security patch level and my system version is 24.11.18 clark_retus.retus.en.US retus
I had an older version of twrp so I just updated it to the latest one before attempting this ofc...
I tried flashing the latest RR and AICP and both give me boot loops and I always get this one problem where it says
"mount: failed to mount /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name
/modem at /firmware: Device or resource busy"
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the bootloop though...
Going to recovery after seeing the bootloop I always get the "keep system read only?" prompt where i swipe to allow modification but i usually just restore back to my backup from there... i dont think allowing it and trying to boot again will get rid of the bootloop...
I followed the process of first doing a full wipe with twrp > flash rom > flash gapps > restart system
no idea what i'm doing wrong..

1st - you need twrp 3.x+,
2nd - full wipe - format data, adv.wipe - all without micro sd.
3rd - flash rom, flash gapps(opengapps.org, ≤mini, arm64, 7.1)
Last Rr is for Nougat modem - you are on MM modem.
Flash RR 21.11.2017.

The first 3 steps I've already done that since the beginning
Where can i get the nougat modem/is it possible to update to it? I guess that's the reason every single 7.1 custom rom I tried in the android development section gave me boot loops...
And could you link the 21.11.2017 version of RR? I'm looking at the download links for RR and I dont see one with that exact date
edit-just saw your edit
Custom roms for MM modem works better.
I fully wiped using TWRP, checked everything I possibly could except my micro SD card and I flashed RR-N-v5.8.5-20171121-clark-Final.zip then gapps arm64, 7.1 nano and it's still giving me boot loops. I'm using TWRP 3.2.1-0
im gonna try using gapps arm64 7.1 mini really quick since you said I should use that one and see if it boot loops... - Edit guess I was too optimistic thinking this would fix it
Bugs probably after flashing december RR.
Change twrp to 3.1.x, reboot twrp, change all partitions to ext4 - adv wipes - One by one - cache, system, data, reboot twrp.
Change back to f2fs - only cache & data, wipe all, flash what I wrote.

It doesn`t matter.
Try another custom - LOS f.e.
If bootloop still will be - you should flash full stock.

A little late to chime in and this does not help with your current situation, but here's a little advice. I flash a lot of ROMs (how else am I going to test builds right?). This error happens all the time, BUT if you flash a ROM twice it should not show on the 2nd flash.
So flash order goes:
Wipe/Factory reset
Format data x3 (yes I format my data 3 times for every ROM)
Reboot
Wipe/Factory reset
ROM
ROM again
GAPPS
Wipe caches
Reboot
Do the Initial setup
Reboot before use
OPTIONAL Kernel (if its not already build in)
OPTIONAL Magisk (I never flash Magisk on a clean build but heck I'm expecting a NON boot most of the time anyways)
At this point I would flash the stock Nougat image via fastboot to get the device operational again... Then look at TWRP, root, or custom ROM.

Boot TWRP (don't flash it) and make a full back, and I would recommend not talking any OTAs either.
Then knock yourself out... You can always get back to this state if things go badly.

All customs for N modem(I think) have problems with notification sound, so you can stay at stock.

(VS995) Is there a Stock Rom or way to go to stock and stay rooted?

I like Lineage OS but the fact the second screen stays on even when locked drains battery even with a custom Kernal. I would love to be stock and rooted but since I DS the boot. I understand flashing stock will get rid of it(maybe I am wrong?). I just want a stock rom or a way to go to stock and stay rooted? is this possible or am I stuck with everyone else?

The first part just means to boot into TWRP recovery and use the backup function preferably with an SD card and then back that up somewhere else. Boot into TWRP, select Backup, make sure Boot, System, and Data are selected (They should be by default) select storage and choose where you want to save the recovery. Then Swipe to Backup, this can take a while.
Once you're done with backing up, should anything go wrong later, you can boot back into TWRP and select the backup using Restore, to go back to your original state at the time of backup.

I'm currently using Alpha Omega v1.3.0 with my VS995 and it seems pretty good. Unless it's been updated though, the Oreo firmware is missing from v1.3.0. If you're on a ROM that isn't based on Oreo firmware, you need a ROM with Oreo firmware flashed first. I used AO 1.0.7, then clean installed 1.3.0 on top of it. I also had a weird bug with advanced calling getting disabled, but I fixed it and posted the solution in the main AO thread. I think it was a rare issue though on Verizons end. Finally, Magisk Manager was recently updated and no longer supports Magisk versions under v18.0. Since AO v1.3.0 comes with Magisk v17.1 you'll probably have to flash Magisk v18.1 (latest as of right now) to get that working properly.

Are you on Alpha Omega now? If you went from a Nougat based ROM straight to Oreo, then you need to make sure the Oreo firmware gets flashed or the fingerprint will not work (There won't even be a fingerprint option in the menu). Clean Install AO 1.0.7 which contains Oreo firmware, then clean install AO 1.3.0 and you should be fine. Note that Magisk is out of date in the ROM and you should also flash Magisk v18.1 as well if you run into an issue with Magisk Manager.

Clean Install AO 1.0.7 which contains Oreo firmware, then clean install AO 1.3.0 and you should be fine. Note that Magisk is out of date in the ROM and you should also flash Magisk v18.1 as well if you run into an issue with Magisk Manager.

Sounds like you didn't install Alpha Omega 1.0.7 first. I had the same issue when the Oreo firmware didn't get installed coming from Nougat. If you clean install AO 1.0.7 in the install log you should see something about "Flashing prerequisite full firmware" at the beginning. Following the completion of that, you need to follow the same clean install process to flash AO 1.3.0 and you should be good.

So flash AO 1.0.7 then 1.3 by formating data, the wipe dalvic, data, system, and cache. then install twrp and magisk. reboot into recovery. then install 1.3?
Also... Should I install dirty santa kernal?

First off, you should be rooted with TWRP 3.2.3-4 from here already installed. Then follow these steps:
Clean Install -> Format Data -> Advanced Wipe -> Cache, Dalvik, Data, System
Install 1.0.7 -> Choose the proper kernel for your root method
If you rooted via dirtysanta, choose the mk2000 santa kernel
Reboot to recovery, no need to go to setup
Clean Install 1.3.0 -> Format Data -> Advanced Wipe -> Cache, Dalvik, Data, System
Use the same kernel from above
Flash Magisk v18.1
Wipe Dalvik/Cache
Reboot to System
