So I just bought a regular SIM-free Galaxy S4.
I remember hearing earlier in the year at Google I/O there was a Google Edition (Nexus Experience) Android coming to Galaxy S4.
Is it possible to take a regular Galaxy S4 and put Google Edition (Nexus Experience) Android on it?
Is there a legitimate way to do this (without root)?
If not what's the best way to go about it?
Will that work for a UK version of the phone?
Once it's installed will it then update automatically when the newer Google Edition Android becomes available via Google?
Thanks in advance,

In order to do any of those things you want to do the phone MUST be rooted.
Once it is rooted you can flash the google edition roms found here in xda for
your phone.
Once you do root the phone you will not longer be able to get automatic updates via google.
You will need to download the updated/newer rom here in xda and flash it using twrp or cwm.
Good luck!

Interesting does that mean that the Google Edition S4 that you could get from the Google Play store could automatically update, but the rooted ones cannot?

There are no roms of any kind for any phones at the google play store. (check it out!!!)
This thread again.
Root.
Manual updates.
Search the forums first.

I'm referencing this phone, which comes with Google Edition preinstalled and therefore must auto-update as a result.

That link is NOT the google playstore which you were refering to.
The link is an advertisement for the phone itself.
And the only way the phone will get auto updates (OTA) is if you do NOT root
the phone and or flash any of the custom roms found here in these threads.
So in other words if you want to flash roms which you see here in xda you need to
be rooted and there will be no auto updates.
Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct forum to ask, sorry if it isn't.
I've noticed that after the lollipop upgrade I don't have the "smart lock" option in my settings->security. After digging through the www for a while it seems that I don't have the latest Google play services update (which brings the "trusted places" feature).
Is this correct? This is the reason I'm not seeing the "smart lock' feature?
Play store says I have the latest version (I currently have 436, which is NOT the latest version). Why? I got the play services update this morning and yet it's not the latest version. Should I wait a little longer for the update?
Is it safe to update the latest Google play services manually? apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/google-play-services-6-5-87-1599771-446-apk
Thanks in advance.

apk mirror is a site of android police to upload their apk's. i trust them and i installed stuff from there a lot of times. the apk signatures are correct and the apk update correctly to newer versions after the insallation. so it is a matter of trusting the source. i trust them so a lot of other readers.
android police is a serious site. so do your research about the site and decide for yourself if you are willing to trust them or not.
P.S. the reason that you don't have the latest version is that the roll out is usually done within the span of a few days to weeks depending of where you are. so the update will come eventually.

I always prefer to do the update the "regular way", via play store, so according to your advice I think I'll wait a little longer for the update.
Thanks. :good:

Well, in my case it's just a cool new feature I want to try out. I'll give it a few more days and if it won't come on it's own then I'll update it manually.
It's basically just getting the apk and running it (wherever it's located), correct?

you download the apk on your phone and install it like any other app. it is called side loading. there is an option under settings/security to allow you install apps outside the play store if you haven't done it already you must unclick it.

For the Nexus 4 (with Lollipop), I believe this is the version you want from apk mirror:
Google Play services 6.5.87 (1599771-436)
Edit: the notes section on apk mirror explains the version naming/numbering for the Play Services apks. The last three digits indicate which version of Play Services is right for your device.
I was notified immediately after upgrading to L that my Google Services are outdated and I was redirected to Play Store before even could get to home screen. Maybe it only happens after standard OTA...?

It's perfectly safe, as it is the exact same version you will recieve from play store.
I'm not sure what the problem is anymore.
I looked at a friend's Nexus 4 that was also updated with Lollipop and he has the same Google play services build as me and he still gets the 'smart lock' option.
Could it be something with the settings on my phone? Maybe I need to do something in order to enable it? I've already tried enabling a security lock screen but that didn't help.
Hello. I just got my m8 today. I did UL bootloader and rooted the chinese version 156 which came with OTA. The only problem I get is that i cannot sync google contacts. Everything else is working great. Is there any way or do I need to flash the international firmware?
PS If I need to update to a newer version (I saw 165 came out but i didn't get it today) is there a way to flash a newer rom without losing all data through TWRP?
PS2 One other problem i encountered: I tried to install sygic navigator from play store but it forcecloses the entire google play!!! This happens only at this app...
u wont get any ota updates on a modified system @unlocked bootloader & root, so ull have to flash manually every time or revert back to full stock.
concerning google apps and services, ull need to manually add those to the chinese rom (check the B156 rooted thread, the necessary apk files are attached to the OP)
as for flashing updates, it is indeed possible to "dirty flash" a rom over an existent one, but be prepared for potential hiccups / issues / functional resets in that case. best thing is to always to a proper clean flash with your data backed up on a different location (i.e. laptop).
the play store FC is probably due to the app size. check permissions of google play store app and activate permission for storage, that should solve the FC...

Thanx for your reply. I see... As far as the google contacts sync is concerned, I tried creating a GoogleContactsSyncAdapter folder in the system/app folder and copying the apk in there but after the reboot still no sync... Am I doing something wrong? (I did a workaround here as well, i restored the contacts from a csv file but now i don't get cloud backup)
When flashing future updates do we use the TWRP in order to flash the stock roms? I haven't tried that's why I ask. I usually do a full wipe when I flash updates. About the play store i gave it full access, but before that i did a workaround and backed up the prog from another device and restored it to mate8... I will probably see on the next update of the app.

I got it to work... I am not sure what was the reason... I uninstalled it completely and then installed the latest app I saw online and gave permissions and rebooted and the apps are there Thank you all.
The problems fixed. Can someone please answer to the first q about how to flash latest versions since I am rooted-twrp? Are the versions I find in the android development flashable by TWRP? I mean the untouched versions not the custom roms. I am happy with the performance of the stock rom.
some are flashable via twrp, others through the stock huawei erecovery, others again are flashable via fastboot. gotta check the package contents and file types...

Guys how often does contacts sync takes place? I put a contact yesterday at about 18:00 and it doesn't show up at the gmail contacts. Probably due to the fact that if I go to google account it says it synced last yesterday at about 17:15. I know that I can force sync it but I don't want to have to do that every time I add a contact.
I also have the AL10 and I didn't unlock and rooted my phone and didn't receive the B165 rom yet either. My latest rom is still B156.

Hello everybody.
I recently purchased a Chinese Mate 8.
While the Play Store and Google Services were up and running when I received it, contacts where not syncing.
I download GoogleContactsAppSync and solved that BUT I can't sort them by surname, how am I supposed to do that?
Please help, I can't get my head around that!
Thank you
Same here with Sygic. My phone is a chinese one, model NXT-AL10, no root, bootloader locked.
When Sygic is loaded, playstore is force-closed. Sygic can be loaded via Amazon appstore but the "restore"-function does not work.
Moreover, OsmAnd+ navigation does not work properly. It can be opened but no map is shown.
Anyone uses Sygic and OsmAnd+ with Huawei Mate 8 chinese successfully? Should we contact Huawei?

Okay, so you might have seen plenty of these posts but I don't know why I haven't received it yet. Phones in my region have gotten it yet I haven't. Here is some info that might help. My phone is updated to Android 7.0 and has Google Play Services 10.2.98 and the Google App is updated with the current version. So, I don't know why I don't have it yet. Thank you by the way.
The rollout is Google Account based so you will get it sooner or later. You might want to update to 10.2.99 Play Services, try a soft reset and/or accessing Google settings which may trigger it (as far as I heard).
Maybe you should update to
Google Play services 10.5.37 beta
wont let me install latest version

Updated play services to that beta build a few weeks back, I'm still waiting for Google assistant to be enabled on my S7 edge. Been using the assistant on my s4 for a few months though with a custom nougat rom and I like it.

Working fine on my non-rooted S7 Edge. Just have to set the system and Google search languages to US English
I recently unlocked the bootloader and debloated the phone 64gb global version (left the netflix partner program thing on the phone).
I still have the MIUI rom.
The Netflix app doesn't show up in the play store now neither does it work by installing the apk.
Does somebody know if the unlocked bootloader triggers some kind of safety measure similar?
Is my only way around this to install root via magisk?
i get netflix v.6.26.1 build 31696 and it's working i dloade it from apptoide.
I'm pretty sure Netflix doesn't work on unlocked bootloaders, they block devices with unlocked bootloader.
It works. Just not from Play Store or from Netflix support site (apk provided on Netflix site is very old). Download latest apk eg from apk mirror or similar site and it will work
