So I just bought a regular SIM-free Galaxy S4.
I remember hearing earlier in the year at Google I/O there was a Google Edition (Nexus Experience) Android coming to Galaxy S4.
Is it possible to take a regular Galaxy S4 and put Google Edition (Nexus Experience) Android on it?
Is there a legitimate way to do this (without root)?
If not what's the best way to go about it?
Will that work for a UK version of the phone?
Once it's installed will it then update automatically when the newer Google Edition Android becomes available via Google?
Thanks in advance,

In order to do any of those things you want to do the phone MUST be rooted.
Once it is rooted you can flash the google edition roms found here in xda for
your phone.
Once you do root the phone you will not longer be able to get automatic updates via google.
You will need to download the updated/newer rom here in xda and flash it using twrp or cwm.
Good luck!

Interesting does that mean that the Google Edition S4 that you could get from the Google Play store could automatically update, but the rooted ones cannot?

I'm referencing this phone, which comes with Google Edition preinstalled and therefore must auto-update as a result.

That link is NOT the google playstore which you were refering to.
The link is an advertisement for the phone itself.
And the only way the phone will get auto updates (OTA) is if you do NOT root
the phone and or flash any of the custom roms found here in these threads.
So in other words if you want to flash roms which you see here in xda you need to
be rooted and there will be no auto updates.

Hi Guys,
I want to put google play edition on my phone but having just tried, i've had a nightmare! After applying the phone showed the very brief Samsung logo and then the screen goes black. I managed to fight my way through ODIN to get the phone re-rooted, then managed to force on PhilzCWM and finally get it back to a Wanam ROM. All very painful.
Any ideas why the Play Edition won't work for me?
Model - GT-I9500
Android - 4.2.2
Baseband - i9500ubumh1
Kernal - 3.4.5-Adam-2.0
Bare in mind that some of these values have changed to this since I updated to Wanam. Should I now be OK to use the Google Play Edition?
Thanks!!!
The Google Play Edition is titled:

Yeap that worked fine... looking at 4 coloured circles doing little loops and spins now. Nice.
Is it really a conversion to the google edition?.. Or just another ported rom?
To be honest, I'd be worried installing a rom with so little information provided as to what it is exactly.

The real deal but....
the setup wizard crashes and shortly after a few installs the Android OS then starts crashing, constantly complaining about GSFlogin failing and then all the subsequent uses of Googles apps start crashing. Very disappointing.

Ahh that may have been my fault. I installed the Google Apps package. Reflashed without it and it now seems to be fine.

Ahh b(&*cks, you're right! Just checked "About Device" again. Claims to be 4.3 but has that guys name at the bottom.
Play Store usually updates itself but mine is still on 4.8.
Is 4.9 only for KK and up?
has anybody got the new playstore on a JB Note3?
just download it manually and install it, you should be fine

Occasionally when Google decides that they would release a better/optimized version of Play Store for a specific set of devices, they hold off till they get version XXXXX instead of getting version XXXYX, to ensure that they don't release broken updates.
Like how apps on the Play Store doesn't always state their version as they "Vary by device". When downloading an app, your model information is sent to Google and then verified that it can run it perfectly. If for example version 0.00012 works on most other devices, it doesn't mean it will work on yours. They may have a 0.00012a, which is NOT 0.00012, but a tweaked version.

Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct forum to ask, sorry if it isn't.
I've noticed that after the lollipop upgrade I don't have the "smart lock" option in my settings->security. After digging through the www for a while it seems that I don't have the latest Google play services update (which brings the "trusted places" feature).
Is this correct? This is the reason I'm not seeing the "smart lock' feature?
Play store says I have the latest version (I currently have 436, which is NOT the latest version). Why? I got the play services update this morning and yet it's not the latest version. Should I wait a little longer for the update?
Is it safe to update the latest Google play services manually? apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/google-play-services-6-5-87-1599771-446-apk
Thanks in advance.

apk mirror is a site of android police to upload their apk's. i trust them and i installed stuff from there a lot of times. the apk signatures are correct and the apk update correctly to newer versions after the insallation. so it is a matter of trusting the source. i trust them so a lot of other readers.
android police is a serious site. so do your research about the site and decide for yourself if you are willing to trust them or not.
P.S. the reason that you don't have the latest version is that the roll out is usually done within the span of a few days to weeks depending of where you are. so the update will come eventually.

I always prefer to do the update the "regular way", via play store, so according to your advice I think I'll wait a little longer for the update.
Thanks. :good:

Well, in my case it's just a cool new feature I want to try out. I'll give it a few more days and if it won't come on it's own then I'll update it manually.
It's basically just getting the apk and running it (wherever it's located), correct?

you download the apk on your phone and install it like any other app. it is called side loading. there is an option under settings/security to allow you install apps outside the play store if you haven't done it already you must unclick it.

For the Nexus 4 (with Lollipop), I believe this is the version you want from apk mirror:
Google Play services 6.5.87 (1599771-436)
Edit: the notes section on apk mirror explains the version naming/numbering for the Play Services apks. The last three digits indicate which version of Play Services is right for your device.
I was notified immediately after upgrading to L that my Google Services are outdated and I was redirected to Play Store before even could get to home screen. Maybe it only happens after standard OTA...?

It's perfectly safe, as it is the exact same version you will recieve from play store.
I'm not sure what the problem is anymore.
I looked at a friend's Nexus 4 that was also updated with Lollipop and he has the same Google play services build as me and he still gets the 'smart lock' option.
Could it be something with the settings on my phone? Maybe I need to do something in order to enable it? I've already tried enabling a security lock screen but that didn't help.
Okay, so you might have seen plenty of these posts but I don't know why I haven't received it yet. Phones in my region have gotten it yet I haven't. Here is some info that might help. My phone is updated to Android 7.0 and has Google Play Services 10.2.98 and the Google App is updated with the current version. So, I don't know why I don't have it yet. Thank you by the way.
The rollout is Google Account based so you will get it sooner or later. You might want to update to 10.2.99 Play Services, try a soft reset and/or accessing Google settings which may trigger it (as far as I heard).
Maybe you should update to
Google Play services 10.5.37 beta

Updated play services to that beta build a few weeks back, I'm still waiting for Google assistant to be enabled on my S7 edge. Been using the assistant on my s4 for a few months though with a custom nougat rom and I like it.
