Hi guys, wondering if anyone can help me out, or point me in the direction so I can help myself.
I'm trying to use USB tethering, when I click the toggle it turns itself back off straight away...
I've had a look in the error logging (I'm no expert)
I see two relevant things; "Settings W Setting tether_dun_required has moved from android.provider.setting.system to android.provider.setting.global"
and "Tethering E Set dun requiered as 1" "Tethering E Dun type exists"
Is there anything better I could be doing to identify the problem?
Google reveals nothing when searching the errors
And just quickly, I am trying the right thing to use USB tethering from me WiFi? Some of the google results suggest the dun info is linked to mobile provider.
Thanks
Bump

Hi,
Anyone know if there is any setting that disables data connection automatically switch on?
I find it quite annoying at some point, i was using wifi to surf the net as well as having window live messenger on. But once i dc-ed from wifi (it auto reconnect back to access point) and the data connection automatically switch on (cost money for data connection), which i don't want it to happen.
Please assist, thank you.

you can find it on top. In "search by keywords" type "data connection"
select "search titles only"
in the forum list select blackstone {i presume you have blackstone}

You can also download HD Tweak it allows you to do this, also check what your email etc settings are as It shouldnt connect unless it needs to

Good day gentlemen!
Automatically?
I'm very lazy so is there a solution to automatically block the data-connection while using wifi?
Or maybe you can tell me how to detect wifi being turned on so i can write my own program...
Thanks
Hi, I posted in q and a forum bit desperate for a solution as I'm stuck on a train for 4 hrs with no,connection.
I have flashes the Gingerblur rom. 6.5 which gives me the free tethering apn. I selected it but don't know what else I need to do to make it work.
Do I need to select a specific usb connection? Does it need wifi enabled? If someone can please help point me in the right direction.... i know this isn't very complicated I am new to android and hard for me to find the answer from the phone
this is what I do, not sure if it'll work for you but you can give it a try.
Enable Mobile Hotspot
Then, goto .. Settings -> Wireless and Network Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> ATT Free Tether (or whatever teh APN is named in Gingerblur, mines is from aRoot so its labeled ATT Free Tether)
Select ATT Free Tether, and you should be able to edit it. DONT EDIT ANYTHING. Just save it (options button, save) then exit it. ... mobile hotspot should activate shortly
Hey that seems like it works for me... the mobile hotspot icon turned from red to blue. But still no Internet on the lappy.
Does it need to be using wifi or will it work with the data connex?
Is there a specific usb setting i need
Thanks very much
does your laptop have wifi? You have to connect to your phone using wifi.
Also -- you should make a password for your hotspot. Go into mobile hotspot settings, and then wifi hotspot settings, and then configure your hotspot.
there you should see the name (Network SSID) if your hotspot. Set a password, and then using your laptop, scan for the wireless networks available, click on your hotspot, and plug in your password.
should be all set from there.
hey it worked! thanks so much, i was trying to connect using my usb connection...as this was how i did it on my old WM phone.
Not sure if i can make it work with the pwd, but for now i'm up and running with an open connection.
Thank you thank you!
All,
I'm having a problem with a mod that allows Bluetooth tethering that I found in the development section. I'm hoping someone here might have some ideas on how to fix it.
First... the problem. I took the framework-res.apk from Nottach's P-ROM because it opens up the "Bluetooth tethering" option in the Hotspots and tethering menu. The process seemed to work (backed up my original framework-res.apk and replaced it with the new one in Nottach's P-ROM), and I have the option to enable Bluetooth tethering now. Unfortunately, none of my devices are actually able to use the Bluetooth connection for tethered access. I have a Note 2 that has Bluetooth tethering enabled, and it works like a champ.
A couple things I've noticed (not sure if it will help identify the problem):
- When connected to my laptop (Windows 8), I can usually right click on my Note 2 in the devices panel and select "Connect with" ... "Access Point". There's no such option when connected with the S4. It just says "Connect with"... "Direct connection", but that doesn't allow internet access.
- When I go into the "Tethering and portable hotspot" menu on my S4 (where the Bluetooth Tethering option is located), I noticed that the "Bluetooth tethering" option is not "checked" for a split second after the screen opens up (even after I've turned it on and then backed out of the screen). A check will appear after a split second, but it's visibly not there when I open the screen. On my Note 2, the check is always there after I turn the option on.
Anyone have any ideas of what I may be missing? I'm not a developer, but I'm not afraid to tinker a bit if anyone has thoughts on the subject.
Thanks in advance.
I don't know if you're still following Nottach's thread, but FYI... I've posted a $10.00 bounty over there for an installable, ready-to-run apk that will enable bluetooth tethering. If I get any takers, I'll let you know.

My S4 doesn't have the Bluetooth Tethering checkbox. Where would I look for your suggestion?
Hi all,
I have tried to search for a similar problem in forums but have not found it or an answer.
My problem is that when I leave a known network (my home network) it remains off when I return. I wonder if this is because I have a setting incorrectly. I can't find anything even remotely that corresponds to not automatically finding my network again when I return home. It's annoying because it eats away at my cellular data (which despite being LTE) is blazingly slow.
I wonder if it is:
A) a setting that I am missing - what does triggering 'enable wi-fi verbose logging' in developer options do for instance - will that assist me?
or B) Something to do with me being in China behind the great fire wall. When I enter my home network, I get a 'Wi-Fi has no internet access - touch for options' notification that allows me to select 'Stay connected? Dont ask again yada yada' situation. The wifi works which is great, but it remains with an exclamation mark next to the wifi symbol in my status bar. I strongly feel that this is why the phone is not automatically able to relog into my network. Afterall, it does fine with automatic Bluetooth reconnection in my car.
Am I making sense? I know that a good fix would be to simply use my VPN through my router. Unfortunately though this option is closed to me, as I recently spent on upgrading my router and ... didn't realize the importance of a VPN capable router. My TL-WDR6500 is apparently not VPN able, so therefore it also means I cannot easily flash new roms as the phone hangs in unskippable limbo during the boot up process waiting for google service marriage or something. I can get around that at any rate, because I have found vpn ready networks close by. However, the fact remains that I think it is for this reason, my home network needs to be manually engaged each time I leave and come home. So, I am also wondering if there is some sort of noob-ish friendly network manager that can help me.
I guess it's not the end of the world for me, but it would make my phone experience top shelf if I could easily sort it out. Any assistance or thoughts would be appreciated. Surely, I can't be the only one living in mainland China using a nexus with these difficulties, right?
Cheers.
Ok. Seems that no one knows or is able to assist.
I have therefore thought about it and downloaded macrodroid and set up a couple of macros to connect WiFi networks (one for work and one for home) when they appear. Not sure what this will do to battery life and whether it will even fix the actual problem, but I guess I'll find out when I go walk the dog in a little while (literally, not figuratively).
Maybe this post might be of help to someone else stuck behind the great fire wall of China...

balls... Macrodroid solve didn't work... Anyone? Please?
Solution 1 (does not require root):
1. Reboot phone and wait until Wifi is connected
2. Go to Settings and create a new user
3. Continue with user setup until you see "checking connection"
4. As soon as you see "checking connection", switch off your phone
5. Switch on your phone again
6. Toggle Wifi, and the exclamation mark should disappear quickly
7. You may optionally remove the new user you just created
This requires root, but if your problem is only about WiFi, then this will definitely work.
Just go to Terminal Emulator then type commands:
su
settings put global captive_portal_server g.cn
This will set the captive portal server to one we can use behind the Great Firewall, thus correcting the connection detection. After you toggle WiFi off and on you will no longer see the exclamation mark and WiFi will not prevent itself from connecting due to "no internet connection".
Oh, and greetings from Beijing

I am a real noob. Ty for your time and thank you for your post - I was starting to feel like I was delving into a shakespearean monologue of self reflection and self help/doubt.
The first nonroot method worked, but I have also implemented your command work around. I have removed macro too. I wonder if now I can flash roms without suffering the no connection problem - or do I need to reset the command prompt thing each time I flash?
Thanks

Each ROM you flash you need to type the command.
Just a matter of installing an app and typing a bit, and the terminal app can be kept for later use (handy when troubleshooting), not so bothersome isn't it?

Ok I'm going to give this a shot. I've tried calling T-Mobile and OnePlus and they didn't know what I was talking about. I'm hoping someone here may understand and have a solution. I'm trying to connect my WiFi to an access point that doesn't have an internet connection and then use the internet from my mobile data connection at the same time. I have a drone that streams live video. By connecting to it's hot spot (access point), it allows live video streaming. It also allows control through points on Google maps and you can use satellite view. I can't get satellite view because while connected to it's access point, I have no internet to download the imagery. I have intelligent network connection, dual channel download acceleration, as well as mobile data always active (developer settings) enabled. Is what I've explained understandable? Can someone help. I prefer not to use a third party app since obviously the phone is capable of doing it on it's own. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. First time posting, hope I did all correctly.
I'm running 11.0.0.1.1 IN11AA
TLDR: I connect to my drone through access point to stream video and need to use cellular data at the same time.
Hi there
You explained it perfectly, I know what you mean.
Can you create a hotspot with your phone and connect your drone to that?
Your internet connection will still work?
Or is it one way only?
How do other users of drones get around this?
Seems like a huge ballache.
No, the drone itself creates a hotspot that you have to connect to I'm order to stream. Again, I've been able to do this before without having to tunnel or anything but I can't seem to get it to work now. Typically the phone will try to attain an internet connection however possible. If one source doesn't supply it, it tends to use others but I'm this case, it just remains offline. Thanks for the great response, I tried to go all routes other than creating yet another post but I've exhausted all options I can think of.
I think there is a setting in "Developer options" that should solve your issue...
1. activate developer options (Settings->About Phone->Tap "Build number" until it says "Developer options enabled" - it may be you need to enter your device PIN to activate this)
2. navigate to Settings->System-Developer Options and search for the entry "Always activate mobile data" and toggle this to ON
Please note I am using a German language setting, so maybe the entries in English are marginally differing from what I wrote...
