[Q] Bluetooth tether issue - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

All,
I'm having a problem with a mod that allows Bluetooth tethering that I found in the development section. I'm hoping someone here might have some ideas on how to fix it.
First... the problem. I took the framework-res.apk from Nottach's P-ROM because it opens up the "Bluetooth tethering" option in the Hotspots and tethering menu. The process seemed to work (backed up my original framework-res.apk and replaced it with the new one in Nottach's P-ROM), and I have the option to enable Bluetooth tethering now. Unfortunately, none of my devices are actually able to use the Bluetooth connection for tethered access. I have a Note 2 that has Bluetooth tethering enabled, and it works like a champ.
A couple things I've noticed (not sure if it will help identify the problem):
- When connected to my laptop (Windows 8), I can usually right click on my Note 2 in the devices panel and select "Connect with" ... "Access Point". There's no such option when connected with the S4. It just says "Connect with"... "Direct connection", but that doesn't allow internet access.
- When I go into the "Tethering and portable hotspot" menu on my S4 (where the Bluetooth Tethering option is located), I noticed that the "Bluetooth tethering" option is not "checked" for a split second after the screen opens up (even after I've turned it on and then backed out of the screen). A check will appear after a split second, but it's visibly not there when I open the screen. On my Note 2, the check is always there after I turn the option on.
Anyone have any ideas of what I may be missing? I'm not a developer, but I'm not afraid to tinker a bit if anyone has thoughts on the subject.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you're still following Nottach's thread, but FYI... I've posted a $10.00 bounty over there for an installable, ready-to-run apk that will enable bluetooth tethering. If I get any takers, I'll let you know.

Hate to Necro and old thread but literally... Try renaming your phone's Bluetooth name to ALL caps only... It jumps after reconnecting to connecting as access point. Don't believe me try it out and go egg later

My S4 doesn't have the Bluetooth Tethering checkbox. Where would I look for your suggestion?

Is there a way to force WiFi only?

I have free unlimited data for a few months, but when it is over I would like my phone to never connect to the internet through the carrier unless I specifically tell it to (Prefer to use the WiFi feature). Is there a setting, registry hack or other way that I can do this. I appologize if this is not a mogul specific question, I just figured it would be hardware specific.
yeah, there are a few free programs i've found on on xda that allow you to disable the gprs, etc... then all you have to do flick on your wifi switch and you're good to go.
I've attached a copy of the program that i personally use. I found it on this site but i don't have a clue what thread it was....
what i've done is after installing the program i set the "voice dail" button on my phone to activate the NoData program instead. Then i can easily toggle off the services i wish to use.... keeping them turned off also increases your battery life tremendously
Thanks for the reply. I tried that app, the connection that came up was CDMA1X so I disbled it, and then went to internet explorer it still browsed the web without a wifi connection, so I assume this didn't work.
Do you have sprint? If so, I'm not sure why you're phone would have a different setup than mine. When using that program i have two listings come up: 1. Phone as Modem, 2. Sprint PCS.
If i disable both i get only wifi.
thanks

ok i just played around with my phone a little more and have one other idea.
begin by tapping: start>settings>connections tab>connections>manage existing connections
select one of the options in the list and then tap the "proxy settings" tab.
uncheck the box "This network connects to the internet".
Repeat for each connection.
Hopefully this will solve your problem
I tried that too, unfortunately when I close the connections settings and go back in the check mark is back.
Hi, I'm not sure if you have solved this problem already but, somehow I did. I went to manage existing connections and assign a username and password . So now whenever, it tries to connect on the dial up (cdma1x), it prompts for a password, just press "cancel". I also have some programs for different home screens and contacts manager if you're interested.
YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! This program has allowed me to kill all apps from using the data connection which lets USB Modem actually WORK on my Mogul! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Why my WiFi is grayed out?

Noticed that, obviously my phone is not in airplane mode, please advise.

Yes...when plugged in via usb it utilizes the internet that is available in the pc and overrides the wi-fi. Unplug the usb cable and the wi-fi should come back on without any interaction on your part.

Does it do it no matter if I choose active-sync/file sharing/internet sharing? I guess the third option does not make much sense...

I'm a little outside of my comfort range here...but...I believe the third option, internet sharing allows the PC to use the HD2 as the internet source. This is referred to as tethering. I'll look forward to someone correcting me if I'm wrong.

Bingo, you are correct
It passes your data connection over to your PC via USB, just like the phone was a modem.
but what if you want to use the phone as the internet source from your laptop? I have wifi in my house and use hotspots when available but what if I have neither available. can I use the phone to connect my laptop to the internet?
if so HOW?
thanks

If your LT does not have a wifi card get one, a using a $30 wifi card is preferable to using a $500 phone as a wifi dongle ...[/QUOTE]
But, yes you can use your phone to access the internet on your laptop , as stated before it is called tethering , it uses the phones data connection not the phones wifi connection ...
The exception to that is , if you run the wifi router app on your phone, not plugged into usb, then you can connect your LT to your phone via wifi ...
So one more time ...
Internet Sharing over USB allows your LT to connect to your phones Data connection not its wifi , wifi will be disabled.
Internet Sharing using the Wifi Router on the phone turns the wifi into a Ad-hoc access point, so your LT can connect to your phone over wifi and use your phones data connection ..
---double post ---
my laptop does have 802.1bgn built into it. so at home, it automatically connects to my wireless router. this all works fine. I cannot afford to pay an additional $30 or whatever extra per month for a few minutes of internet access that I need from time to time from a wireless card/dongle or whatever.
if I take the LT to a hotspot (starbucks for example) once again it if fine.
if I go to a location that has neither then I would like to use the phone, either tethered or through bluetooth or wireless to get the laptop to connect to the internet throught the htc phone but I just cannot figure out how to do this.
I can connect the htc and the laptop through bluetooth or by the usb tethering but it will not connect to the internet and I cannot figure out what I need to do to get it to connect.
can you help me on this? thanks

Ok now we are getting somewhere, do you have a screen that pops up on your phone that asks you how to connect?
If not goto Settings>Connections>USB to PC , then check the bottom box "Ask me ..."
When you plug your phone into usb it should ask you if you want to use , ActiveSync, Diskdrive, or Internet Sharing, if you choose Internet sharing it should goto the data screen right after that and install the driver on the PC.
It then should connect .
So really your question should have been , "How do I share my phones data connection over USB?", or something like that .
..
It is a good idea to have the other connections on your laptop shut off, wifi , lan ...
that button has been checked but it only it says the first two active sync and disc drive but not internet connections. how do I get it to ask me that?

Well, to be honest, I only played with mine Stock for about 3 hours, so maybe someone with a stock one that has played with it more, will wade in here .....
pblocal, somewhere in your start menu, you will find an icon for "internet sharing", just run that, and make sure the two options are set to "USB" and "T-Mobile Data" (or whatever your data connection is named, it should be in the drop-down list), and then hit "connect" in the bottom left.. If you're connected via the ActiveSync option, it should then feed your 3G connection to your pc over the usb cable.
looked all over for that but could not find it.
could it be this phone does not have it? that would be LAME!
thanks for the help guys but I need more....
you can find the "Internet Sharing" app in the tools folder in the start menu.
it is in misc. settings on the phone last setting at the bottom

HOW to USB tether Vibrant with MacOS X (TMO)

I am coming from a g1 originally (back before cyanogen had 1000 followers), most recently a N1 (busted the screen last Friday, doh!). One thing I enjoyed is being able to tether to either of the old phones with wifitether. Lack of CM6 and a stable wifitether.apk for the vibrant leaves me unable to work while I am out and about without wifi access.
Did some reading around, and playing and this is what worked for me. I have a rooted vibrant (but this su shouldn't be needed), macbook pro, and os x 10.6.4.
*** Note: I had to have USB debugging enabled to get MacOS X to prompt setting up the vibrant as a USB modem. Not having this enabled didn't work.***
1. Connect your Vibrant to your Mac with the USB cable.
2. MacOS should prompt you saying that there is a device connected and not set up. If it does not, click on the Apple Menu, select system preferences. Select the Network pane.
3. The device should have been named as SAMSUNG_Android. Select it.
4. Start with the advanced options. Click the button that says 'Advanced.'
5. Under the Modem tab, use these options:
Model: SamsungModel: GPRS (GSM/3G)APN: epc.tmobile.comCID: 1
6. I left the DNS, WINS, and Proxies tabs alone
7. I read on a blackberry forum that under the PPP tab, 'TCP Compression' had to be checked.
8. Click 'OK' and return to the Network Pane.
9. I used these settings for the SAMSUNG_Android configuration.
Telephone Number: *99#Account Name: usernamePassword: password
*** Note: I remember from the pre-Android days that the username/password didn't matter. I believe the keys to it working on TMO are the number and APN, and most likely the Modem info. ***
This is what worked for me on Tmobile in Florida. Your mileage may vary. If you can get this to work with different settings, please share here.
Works like a charm! Thanks OP. This is being posted from my tethered Mac.

Oh yeah, and I'm not rooted.
will def have to check this out when I get home
I figured something like this would work, but I never really bothered past *99***#* GPRS/GPRS
Nice! Thanks! I was wondering if that would work when I saw the modem prompt pop up. I just didn't have time to chase down the settings. Works fine here.
I did some more reading on some old forums, and confirmed that the username and password are not important. They should work with empty fields.
It wouldn't work with me for blank U/P, but with 'username' and 'password', I am happily tethered.
Thanks, OP.

Good to know. Thanks for testing! The forums I was reading were old and for blackberries and winmo. Thought the settings wouldn't make a difference for the device.
This is the first time usb tethering actually works for me on any device. Even with usb tethering enabled in CM6 on my nexus one i could never get it to work, only wifi tethering did. Just did this, and i'm currently tethered. First time I plugged in my vibrant and that samsung_network popped up I had an idea I could tether but i never looked into it. thnx OP
Well, that tethering method is one that only works on PC's.
Anyone know if this works on Tiger 10.4? I dont seem to have the same options under the modem tab...i dont have samsung listed as a possible model, nor the gsm portion of the model or a place to put the apn?
Actually, if you set USB mode to Kies, tethering should work with Cradlepoint router or XP/Vista/7 with Kies Suite installed.
I tested it with Behold II (Samsung USB studio mode) and use Samsung Mobile Modem for setting up dial-up networking, and it works 100%.
No USB debugging required.
Running 10.6.4 and this works. Currently USB tethered and not rooted. Thanks OP!
Running 10.6.4
NOT rooted.
Got 1.6Mbit down and 1.2Mbit with 0 bars. (I know the bars aren't accurate but just saying that the signal isn't as strong as it could be) Faster than my cable upload.
Thanks OP!
Running 10.6.4.
Not working.
I get a message that says, "The communication device selected for your connection does not exist. Verify your settings and try reconnecting."
Question: In the network devices panes is the the 'SAMSUNG_Android' device connected with a green light before you hit the connect button. Mine is amber and the status is "Not Connected".
My other configured devices (Parallels Host adapter) are green and show connected statuses, even though I don't even have Parallels installed anymore.
Then again, I had all kinds of fits just making my sd cards mount on this mac. I think my phone is really defective. I still have one more day on my remorse period. Oh well.
How do I do this with a Windows PC? XP or Windows 7. Thanks!

Strange.
Mine is amber until it connects. Once connected, you have a call timer in the status bar, and the notification orb turns green.
I followed the instructions perfectly, and it works without a hitch.
You're just using 'username' and 'password'?
Oh, if you need to purge your system of Parallels (I recommend this), use AppZapper. I remember Parallels messed with my system settings and caused a number of issues. Alternatively, you could try reinstalling the latest OSX firmware update, or trashing the USB preferences and instructions to generate a new file.

[GUIDE] Auto Bluetooth Tethering (NO ROOT)

I just recently got my Note 10.1 (2014) WiFi a few days ago, but have been doing quite a bit of research. One thing I really wanted was my tablet to be... well, mobile. I could always use it at home through WiFi, but off the WiFi connection it serves very little purpose if any at all besides playing offline games, and playing offline content.
So, I did some research and found that its actually pretty easy to have Bluetooth Tether automatically enable itself and connect when you have your phone and tablet near each other.
Items needed: Android Phone, and Android Tablet
1. Download Bluetooth Auto Connect on your tablet.
2. Download Bluetooth Auto Tethering on your phone.
3. Download Tasker on your phone / Llama on the tablet. I used Tasker on my phone and found it slightly difficult to get this to work on the tablets end, so I used both Tasker and Llama to get this to work, your preference however.
4. In Tasker (which I have enabled on my phone):
Add New Task > Add Action from Plugin > Click Bluetooth Auto > If Bluetooth ~ On > Click pencil icon next to configuration > Make sure Enable Blueooth Tether is active > Save.
Once you complete this click the upper left corner "back" button twice and you should see your new "Tether" task listed on your phone.
5. In Llama (On the tablet):
Events > Click plus sign on bottom right of screen > Add Condition > Wifi Network Disconnected (any wifi network) > Add Action > Locale Plugin > Bluetooth Auto Connect > Make sure you set it to your device, in my case its the Moto X > Save.
Once you complete this, click back on your tablet and you should see the new event listed.
6. Profit
-------------------------------------------------------------
To test, disable and enable bluetooth on your phone, go into settings and check to see if tethering was activated automatically. On the tablet, enable WiFi (given you can connect to a network). Once connected to the network, disable WiFi on the tablet. It takes about 5-10 seconds to kick in, but you should connect to your phones bluetooth internet connection automatically. I ensured my phone was connected to data and not the wifi when I tested, but any connection (wifi or data) will work through tether.
Now, it might be just as easy to do this all in Llama, but its working for me using both apps. I will try to get pictures and format this better later on, but I figured I would share. Let me know if you have issues!
Thank you, this was very useful!
Will deffo give this a go - Thanks
I think there is something I am doing wrong. I followed the steps and couldn't get this to work.

Does this still require you to have a bluetooth tethering plan on your phone?
Kit Kat (4.4.2)
It was mentioned that this was used on the Galaxy Tablet 10.1 (2014). I am wondering since the new update to KitKat 4.4.2 has gone through does this still work? I ask because I was running this method with a mix of FoxFI and PDANET - Tablet, and it worked fine until the update, now its not working. So wanted to see if this method was.

I just set my tablet's TTL to 65 and use wifi tethering.
Anyone know if tethering still work with these? I just bought 2 wifi models for $299 (refurbs) on ebay. We want to possibly deploy them for the business. Everyone has Droid Maxx's with unlimited data and it would be nice to tether them together. The tablets are shipped with Android 4.3 and Im afraid to upgrade to 4.4 kitkiat (I know it automatically will). Are there any kitkat tablet tethers for non rooted phones?
If not, is it possible to root the Note 10.1 and permanently stop the OTA update?
thanks ill try it soon on kitkat

how can i get these apps? Bluetooth Auto Tethering? Cant acess it from austria - unavailable in your country
Is there an apk available or so?

Help: Using phone data while connected to AP with no internet

Ok I'm going to give this a shot. I've tried calling T-Mobile and OnePlus and they didn't know what I was talking about. I'm hoping someone here may understand and have a solution. I'm trying to connect my WiFi to an access point that doesn't have an internet connection and then use the internet from my mobile data connection at the same time. I have a drone that streams live video. By connecting to it's hot spot (access point), it allows live video streaming. It also allows control through points on Google maps and you can use satellite view. I can't get satellite view because while connected to it's access point, I have no internet to download the imagery. I have intelligent network connection, dual channel download acceleration, as well as mobile data always active (developer settings) enabled. Is what I've explained understandable? Can someone help. I prefer not to use a third party app since obviously the phone is capable of doing it on it's own. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. First time posting, hope I did all correctly.
I'm running 11.0.0.1.1 IN11AA
TLDR: I connect to my drone through access point to stream video and need to use cellular data at the same time.
Hi there
You explained it perfectly, I know what you mean.
Can you create a hotspot with your phone and connect your drone to that?
Your internet connection will still work?
Or is it one way only?
How do other users of drones get around this?
Seems like a huge ballache.
No, the drone itself creates a hotspot that you have to connect to I'm order to stream. Again, I've been able to do this before without having to tunnel or anything but I can't seem to get it to work now. Typically the phone will try to attain an internet connection however possible. If one source doesn't supply it, it tends to use others but I'm this case, it just remains offline. Thanks for the great response, I tried to go all routes other than creating yet another post but I've exhausted all options I can think of.
I think there is a setting in "Developer options" that should solve your issue...
1. activate developer options (Settings->About Phone->Tap "Build number" until it says "Developer options enabled" - it may be you need to enter your device PIN to activate this)
2. navigate to Settings->System-Developer Options and search for the entry "Always activate mobile data" and toggle this to ON
Please note I am using a German language setting, so maybe the entries in English are marginally differing from what I wrote...
