Mate 8 camera is good enough for me
Just got my phone delivered yesterday and with the few pics I've tested so far, it reminded me how hyper-critical reviews can be from the "experts." The reviews have a tendancy to knock down otherwise amazing devices, just because of the reviewer's own personal feel for what a camera "should" be or do, and/or the user interface that might not be what people are used to. Without even having really set up my phone completely yet (save for Contacts and Calendar sync), I absolutely love this phone and the pics I've taken have been great. The image stabilization on this thing is ridiculously good, which is great for someone like me, who doesn't necessarily have the steadiest hands.

I've been slowly getting to set it up, so it is ready to go when I activate the prepaid T-mobile SIM, but I will try to post some shots this weekend. I am not the best photographer though. One thing I can say that is being underrated is the OIS. For someone like me, who doesn't have the steadiest hands, it is great for point and shoot.

I´d say the overall quality of mate 8 is great! I took these on Firmware C900B133 (NXT-AL10 >> L29) in "normal" mode without effects or editing, only shrinked to half size
Frosty Seaside
Morning Grow
With electric or emitted light, the pictures are abit more noisy, but im happy even with low-light scenarios.

Wow! These photos are great !
Can someone replicate / take a picture of the moon as show below?
took that one with the LG G4 manual mode.
Take a look at the night scene on GSMArena. Camera from Mate 8 is one of the best for very fine details, colour rendition, image processing (without halos, sharpening artifacts, smudging etc). Compare it with the best cameras (Samsung Galaxy s6 edge plus, LG G4 etc) and you'll see. I was very impressed and surprised, too. Sorry, I can't post examples /screenshots. Have a nice day !
The camera is great i have also Nexus 6p and i dont See any difference.
I took this pic last night. No flash, just street/ambient lights and auto focus on camera.

i dont like the camera peroformance .my old p8max had better camera
focus not great with night shots with mate 8 and all photosdeailes not good like my note 5
note 5 cam is way better
but mate 8 is more powerfull and way faster
The camera on the Mate 8 is good. It's about on par with my Nexus 6. It's great outdoors and good in most low light situations. The front camera on the Mate 8 is probably one of the best though. Here's a pic of me and the wife taken with the front camera in a restaurant with very dim lighting.

LOL the note 5 camera is a little better but it shouldn't make or break your decision to stick with the Mate 8. I mean, maybe I should sell my Mate 8 as well because it's nowhere near as good as my DSLR.
I got one to test, and I am comparing it to my N5 from 2013.
It's true that the N5X camera focus waay faster, but it's NOT as instant as the S6/G4 camera for example, unless you're in a situation with a ton of light, you got to wait till it "focus" before shooting. But it is still much faster than the N5, ok.
But in the picture quality category, my N5 makes better fotos than the N5x in this situation (detail). I still don't understand this, but it is true: if I have the patience to focus on the N5, the photo is better than the N5x one (this in middle light situations).
I am not sure if this is normal or what, shooting with the N5 was a hell because the focus issue, but the results were better than the ones im getting with the N5x, even if in low light conditions N5x gets more info.
Why you compare the 300usd device with 500-700usd devices ?
If the 300usd device can do ALL 700usd devices do, why should people buy 700usd one?
As for camera n5 and n5x, i cant comment yet. Im waiting for my friend to bring it over from usa in 2 weeks time.
Based on the review floating on the internet, N5x camera is way better than N5. Probably you get a defective N5x
Today I've tested with a Nexus 6P from a friend, and same case: even in situations with a ton of light, my N5 does photos with more detail distance (but not better real colors and muuch slower focusing..) than this N5X and his N6P. Of course, the photo where you manage to focus...
I don't know why people says that "finally google put one of the best cameras on the Nexus", because the S6 edge from a friend and the Lg G4 from another blowed our N5X and N6P cameras out of the water. And the N6p is as expensive as a S6 edge and more than an LG G4 when they came out.
It's a good camera ok, but it is not at those level (which for me is OK). But the problem is that my Nexus 5 from 2013 is making photos with more detail than those 2!!!! and I don't like this at all . It is a better camera because it doesn't have the epic slow and bad focusing issue and it makes good low light photos and videos, but it is not one of the best on the market as people say! Let's keep things real. However fixing the slow focusing problem alone makes it a worthy upgrade from the N5.

Every review disagrees with you, but picture quality can be subjective. 6p and 5x are regarded as some of the best right now and just about every phone made in the last year made huge strides in camera quality.
What screen are you using to compare the pictures?

For my 5x the low light performance has just been incredible.
sell it or swap it. problem solved.
All this talk about photo quality and not one pic??? Show some examples....
Honestly this camera is great, especially comparing to phones around the same price point. Really, if you don't like it try to change it. Play with Manual Camera or Open Camera and see if you like it better.
Just got a N5X, my last phone was a galaxy S5, which had a good camera but there is no comparison, N5X camera its much better in all things. Some reviews put n5x camera better than iPhone 6S, I can't really say that is better but they are at the same level. Just love it. Especially the low light performance, its awesome.

I'm really loving the camera. I came from a 1st gen Moto G and the camera on that wasn't too bad, especially in well lit situations. I'm extremely happy with the 5X camera. The difference is like a foggy day compared to a clear day.

The problem is not with the camera hardware itself just the software and the Google stock camera app. However, it seems that Google is having a hard time solving this issue judging for lack of fixes during the last 4 months. I did returned my Nexus 5x but it was because the combination of this camera issue with a dead pixel (and the suddenly resurrection of my old Nexus 5).
I can't get it, I've had a N4, N5, OPT and N5X and I can say without a doubt that the N5X is the best camera phone I've ever had.
Nevertheless, I had to disagree with any reviewer saying N5 camera was bad, in my opinion one of the best cameras in a phone in its year, way better SGS4 or HOM7, great pictures in almost every condition

Hopefully they will remove the hard limit of shutter speed from the current 0.2s. I'd love to take light trails from this camera.
this is definitely the best camera in any phone i've had period.
Better than my OPO,Gnex, N5, N4, and better than my sister's iPhone 6 and 5.
The camera in my LG G4 was noticeably better. However, the 5X's camera is much better than the one on my iPhone 6s. And it's light years better than every previous Nexus phone I've owned.

Post a comparison of N5 and N5X where N5 is better or it did not happen.
Google nailed the IQ starting at N5X/6P only where is it as good as Galaxy S6 and certainly better than any iPhone offering to this date.

I've heard too many negative reviews about the camera and that it can be a deal breaker..so which camera is better iphone 6's camera or the axon 7's camera?
Bought the phone because previous one was stolen few days before I went traveling in China. Been more than happy with the pictures it takes. Panorama is cool too. It struggled with low light, but it improving noticably with every update.
Uploaded a few pics from a national park in China for you. You be the judge. All pics were made with auto mode.

I have to say though. The iPhone costs $300 more. If you care so much go for the Galaxy S7 for camera (and Android)
Actually not that bad
I remember hearing tons of negative reviews on the camera and being worried that it wasn't going to be that good but after using the phone for about a week I can honestly say the camera is pretty good. It does struggle a bit in low light, though but that's simply because of the amount of megapixels. In my opinion, some reviewers are just a bit picky

I'm coming from a Nexus 6P and the Axon 7 camera just doesn't compare, especially in low light. The 6P had a great camera. That being said, since B27 came out things have improved noticeably and while the camera still isn't ad good as the 6P, it's more usable now and does produce decent enough shots in low and pretty good ones in good light.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
Low light scenes are very challenging for the camera. ZTE really need to improve the HDR processing, where it can't touch 2015's Nexus phones and where it trails the much cheaper Honor 7.
There's not much sun where I am and I'm really noticing the difference.
You can certainly get better-looking results by playing with white balance in manual mode but that won't help you if you want to snap a darker foreground without blowing out all the background detail - a trick the Nexus phones' HDR+ excels at. I know they are deadly slow but I'd be happy to put up with much longer exposure times if it meant better pictures.
Could you please provide some selfie snaps as I'm kindda of a selfie guy?
Also I currently have the iPhone 5 so if the axon's camera is worse than the iphone 5 I might go with the oneplus 3 even though I hate its 1080p screen

Hi I'm on the fence right now between buying the axon 7 European version and the oneus 3t and s7 edge. The only thing that holds me off is the camera.
I now hold the g5 that I'm planning to give to my wife. Now there is no way that she'll have a better camera than me .
So can you advise me pls?
Did the camera improved after nougat update?
Is the camera better with 3rd party cameras such as open caema app?
In every other field the axon 7 is an unbeatable beast

If you need a great camera on a phone get the s8/s7 or V20
From what I've seen it's not HORRIBLE, but it's not super good either. It's just... ok, I guess. As mentioned, if you want a better camera, get a Samsung or LG phone.

Well it's subjective, but keep in mind:
-The most flawed part of the camera is the software; ISOs are too high on manual mode
-Has high color noise, so photos aren't very good in the dark (unless you have a tripod, with which you can make some shet-in-your-pants photos)
-Very, I repeat VERY good on okay lighting conditions
-Already has RAW support
People usually say that the OP3 has a far better camera than this thing... I'm not that sure anymore, I compared an OP3T and my a7 and while it lacks on low light, the difference is still not that much.
Also different camera apps don't improve quality much, I used a bunch of them (HTC, Motorola, Google, LOS) and always find myself using the stock app for the simplicity and rather good design of it. The only thing worth complaining about is that you can only do 4x zoom on the stock camera, but you won't be using 8x digital too much anyways
The camera isn't bad, but it isn't as good as LG, Samsung or Apple, especially in low light. For the price of the phone it a pretty decent performer. I'm not sure if it improved as my phone got wet and the screen faild a few month back. I finally sent it in for repair today.
If Camera performance is a priority then the LG and Samsung are a better option. Where the Axon 7 shines is in audio both in it front facing speakers and headphone jack.

It's not even close to the performance of even older flagships in terms of overall usability. The Autofocus is so iffy that consider 1/2 of my quickshots are blurry as it just can't lock the target good.
On perfect scenes, the pics do hold up well against S7 and V20 but in terms of clarity there's just way too much noise.
The video performance is even worse often alot of noise show up and the low light video is completely unusable.
It's sad that the iPhone 6 which is much older beats it on all levels still photos, videos, AF, zoom.

OnePlus 3 is better but not much better, the AF is a step up but still very iffy compare to S6 or S7. I even laughed that my Note 4 beats both the Axon7 and OP3 on just random quick shots. The OP3 often has blurry faces and washed out colors if the lighting is weak. Thats why the camera software on flagships are better they compensate the lack of lighting by fixing the images to good effects.
Any low light or fast action shots you take will yield better results in manual mode. I have the Axon 7 (US) and HTC 10. Daylight shots, the Axon wins. Better clarity due to the 20 megapixel camera (HTC 10 has 12 megapixel), and color saturation is more vivid. But low light or fast action shots, the Axon falls flat on its face. I can point and shoot with the HTC consistently, but with the Axon I have to play with manual mode settings to get a shot that's close to the HTC's. Even with that manipulation, the Axon still falls behind the HTC.

Yeah, I read somewhere that using manual mode would be better in low light. I'll have to try that once I get my Axon back from the ZTE service center.
The camera isn't great but is good for a $400 phone. We tend to compare it to more expensive flagships, so I guess I can't complain too much.
I got the Axon 7 for it's audio capabilities and all around good specs for the price, and new the camera probably wasn't going to be top tier.

I have to say that I agree with everything said here, the camera is not top, but still gives a really nice results AS LONG AS YOU KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY USE IT.
This is not a camera for point and shoot in any situation, and as the guys pointed out, on daylight you will get amazing pictures, sharp and with nice colors. On low light... it really depends on your abilities.
I had the Mate 9 for a month, and I can say there wasn't so much difference between the 2, even on low light they were similar, but always the Mate 9 giving slightly better results.
One more thing, the video in the Axon 7 is kind of mediocre. I don't care about video, usually I don't record many videos, but I can say it was huge difference the video from the Mate 9 and the Axon 7. If you are a video guy, probably you would be disappointed with the Axon 7.
In the end, I gave back the Mate 9 and I kept the Axon 7 because for me, any smartphone should have a nice display, good camera, decent battery, excellent sound and nice performance. Axon 7 has all of those, but most important, the audio experience that no phone in the market can give you nowadays, and is the reason number one I won't change this phone soon.
:good:
Already bought the axon 7 and its a nice phone. The camera is real bad. I can't believe there are such bad camera nowdays. Plus the vibrator motor is noisy and of bad quality. Beside that its pretty nice phone
in comparison to my huawei mate 9, the axon 7 camera is really GREAT. it's like 3 times better than mate 9's ****ty dual cam.
can you switch off the notification vibration? its really annoying me, particularly if you set a notification sound. you then have a vibration and the sound both overlapping each other.

The camera is not bad. The vibratation motor is bad, I agree on that. But I think they could make it better if they reduced the vibration power, which I reckon it would be possible

I've searched but could not find how to reduce vibrator intensity. Even in resurrection remix there is no option. Can you recommend what to do?
Launch night mode, you are golden. Daylight is pretty good. And I must you, if you take makro shots: its FAR better then any phone i know

You can't reduce the intensity on capacity buttons vibration.
Also, the minimum intensity on google keyboard is strong , hence you won't reduce the notifications vibration either, It must be hardcoded in a way that not even kernels can't fix ¿?. I don't know. I'm not a developer...maybe we should contact one...but the fact that it's too strong on both custom and stock roms suggests that it can't be fixed.
So I've managed to get used to the vibration intensity of the though I wish someone would be able to develop a way to control it.
Regarding the camera, I've found that snap camera works great and the post process is excellent and make the shots much more sharper. Video above 720p are still horrible but what can you do.? Nothing is perfect
The camera is very bad in low light, the photo will likely be blurry due to the camera app trying to capture more light. But it does ok in good lighting. You probably can't go wrong with the S7 Edge, it's camera is better than the Axon 7.
Check out their camera section, in low light the S7's camera does much better.

That comparison was made with Marshmallow, and even when the S7 will always take better pictures, quality and focus improved a lot in Nougat.
zte mini camera
i know this is likely a dead topic, but have there been any software developments, either zte or custom rom, that have improved the axon mini's camera?
i read of a google pixel apk, does that install and work ok on the mini 7?

Is there going to be any way to root it, and any devs looking to develop its software?

Given that the official bootloader unlock tools are already out, I'd assume it will work fine out of the box with Magisk.
Just get the phone released in USA asap however looks like this is going to take till end June or mid July and I need a phone now lol
I'm using this phone for few days now and I love it ,
The only weak Point is maybe the camera and don't understand me wrong the shots are beutifull it's just that they camera itself feels sometimes weak like the mechanisme Will break ...
Honestly I am a bit disappointed with this phone. Previously, I used Honor View20. Performance wise it's excellent, for some people pure Android will be a good thing - I liked Samsung's One UI and Huawei's EMUI more. I wish it had iPhone-like gestures cause pill navigation feels a bit incomplete (why we still need to have that back button instead of swiping from the edges?). Main camera performs quite well, however, the ultra wide angle is inferior in my opinion. When you look closely at photos taken with it you will see it's like hmm painting? It lacks detail when zoomed, gets noisy when shooting in low light. As for video, EIS is doing fine. Night mode is disappointing - rather a boosted HDR than a night mode we know from Huawei or GCam. Battery is disappointing for me as well. It certainly does manage through a full day but, well, the performance of 5000 mAh is comparable to my previous Honor View20 which had 4000 mAh. Not sure what's the reason behind this, perhaps software is unoptimized or Kirin was just more battery friendly chip. Moving on to audio - stereo is pretty much nonexistent. Sound mostly outputs from bottom speaker, you can barely hear the top one. As for screen - it's not as bad as some reviewers say. It's average, not the best, not the worst. Overall, I wish there wasn't whole this China v US trade war so I'd keep my Honor device, but since it happened I was forced to switch.

Wait, so the stereo speakers are really not so much there? I've seen videos of it being pretty loud on both orientations if you edited AudioWizard well.

Techspurt also said this about the top end speaker of this phone...
' it's about as loud as a spiders fart in a hurricane.'

The good news is this phone will probably get some decent unofficial support since Asus has started sending Zenfone 6 to devs

wow... that wasnt an exactly good review huh? jeez back to the hunt . maybe an lgv40? or.....
I have a P30 P
---------- Post added at 04:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:51 PM ----------
I have a P30 Pro, very very happy w it. Battery life is excellent , I only charge to 80- 85% and finish at 50-55%
I want to buy the Zenfone 6, am tempted to just order the 6 64 version online but at $549 I want 6/128, can't be bothered w sd card if not needed. 6GB ram is enough as my P30 Pro is CND version 6/128. Not keeping both phones had thought the Zenfone would all me to sell the P30 but I am starting to like it alot
Better than OnePlus!
I am seriously considering getting this. Kinda waiting for the 256gb version to come out.
I do feel like it is a big risk purchasing an asus phone. It would be my first time. I currently own a V20 and it is time for an upgrade.
I do not really know about Asus's reliability or software updates but the stats of the phone are just too good.
The one unique feature that is really important to me is the ability to have 2 sim card + a micro sd card. No other flagship phone allows that which is really surprising.
The only thing i am going to miss dearly is the ability to swap the batteries because that is my biggest feature i love the most. I guess those days are gone forever.
If any flagship phone still allowed me to do that i would get that hands down.
I´m really happy to bought this phone.
Coming from a LG G6, i like to have a standby time up to 3 days.
The Zenfone 6 makes good pictures at day... At nighttime it can be better, i think.
It is very fast, runs smooth and looks very nice.
Overall, i think its a really good phone.
