I got one to test, and I am comparing it to my N5 from 2013.
It's true that the N5X camera focus waay faster, but it's NOT as instant as the S6/G4 camera for example, unless you're in a situation with a ton of light, you got to wait till it "focus" before shooting. But it is still much faster than the N5, ok.
But in the picture quality category, my N5 makes better fotos than the N5x in this situation (detail). I still don't understand this, but it is true: if I have the patience to focus on the N5, the photo is better than the N5x one (this in middle light situations).
I am not sure if this is normal or what, shooting with the N5 was a hell because the focus issue, but the results were better than the ones im getting with the N5x, even if in low light conditions N5x gets more info.
Why you compare the 300usd device with 500-700usd devices ?
If the 300usd device can do ALL 700usd devices do, why should people buy 700usd one?
As for camera n5 and n5x, i cant comment yet. Im waiting for my friend to bring it over from usa in 2 weeks time.
Based on the review floating on the internet, N5x camera is way better than N5. Probably you get a defective N5x
Today I've tested with a Nexus 6P from a friend, and same case: even in situations with a ton of light, my N5 does photos with more detail distance (but not better real colors and muuch slower focusing..) than this N5X and his N6P. Of course, the photo where you manage to focus...
I don't know why people says that "finally google put one of the best cameras on the Nexus", because the S6 edge from a friend and the Lg G4 from another blowed our N5X and N6P cameras out of the water. And the N6p is as expensive as a S6 edge and more than an LG G4 when they came out.
It's a good camera ok, but it is not at those level (which for me is OK). But the problem is that my Nexus 5 from 2013 is making photos with more detail than those 2!!!! and I don't like this at all . It is a better camera because it doesn't have the epic slow and bad focusing issue and it makes good low light photos and videos, but it is not one of the best on the market as people say! Let's keep things real. However fixing the slow focusing problem alone makes it a worthy upgrade from the N5.

Every review disagrees with you, but picture quality can be subjective. 6p and 5x are regarded as some of the best right now and just about every phone made in the last year made huge strides in camera quality.
What screen are you using to compare the pictures?

Love it when someone has no clue what he's talking about. 6P and 5X are in the top10 best camerphones. What have you been drinking???
For my 5x the low light performance has just been incredible.
sell it or swap it. problem solved.
All this talk about photo quality and not one pic??? Show some examples....
Honestly this camera is great, especially comparing to phones around the same price point. Really, if you don't like it try to change it. Play with Manual Camera or Open Camera and see if you like it better.
Just got a N5X, my last phone was a galaxy S5, which had a good camera but there is no comparison, N5X camera its much better in all things. Some reviews put n5x camera better than iPhone 6S, I can't really say that is better but they are at the same level. Just love it. Especially the low light performance, its awesome.

I'm really loving the camera. I came from a 1st gen Moto G and the camera on that wasn't too bad, especially in well lit situations. I'm extremely happy with the 5X camera. The difference is like a foggy day compared to a clear day.

The problem is not with the camera hardware itself just the software and the Google stock camera app. However, it seems that Google is having a hard time solving this issue judging for lack of fixes during the last 4 months. I did returned my Nexus 5x but it was because the combination of this camera issue with a dead pixel (and the suddenly resurrection of my old Nexus 5).
I can't get it, I've had a N4, N5, OPT and N5X and I can say without a doubt that the N5X is the best camera phone I've ever had.
Nevertheless, I had to disagree with any reviewer saying N5 camera was bad, in my opinion one of the best cameras in a phone in its year, way better SGS4 or HOM7, great pictures in almost every condition

Hopefully they will remove the hard limit of shutter speed from the current 0.2s. I'd love to take light trails from this camera.
this is definitely the best camera in any phone i've had period.
Better than my OPO,Gnex, N5, N4, and better than my sister's iPhone 6 and 5.
The camera in my LG G4 was noticeably better. However, the 5X's camera is much better than the one on my iPhone 6s. And it's light years better than every previous Nexus phone I've owned.

Post a comparison of N5 and N5X where N5 is better or it did not happen.
Google nailed the IQ starting at N5X/6P only where is it as good as Galaxy S6 and certainly better than any iPhone offering to this date.

I just switched to TMobile yesterday and I got the LG G2. I am highly disappointed with the camera, specially the low light. I love taking photos on my cell (before this I had a Lumia 1020 which replaced my HTC One which replaced my S3) and the low light just didn't cut it.
The Z1s comes to tmobile in a week so I'm thinking of swapping it out for that. The thing is, I've heard so many mixed reviews about the Z1 and it's camera. I would love to have opinions from you all that own it. If you can compare the photos to any other phone that would be great. I was actually debating between the LG G2 and Note III and Z1, but I really think the Z1 (specs wise) might be the closest to the Lumia 1020 (which is the best smartphone camera I have EVER used....too bad it was on WP8)
Thank you in advance!
Rob
The Z1 camera is infuriating to use because it's obvious that the hardware is a beast. It's the best camera hardware you can get on an Android device. However, the software is a hit or miss. Superior auto is okay for daylight pictures but is almost unusable for lowlight pictures. However, if you take a bit of time to learn how to use the camera in manual, you will have no problem getting excellent images from the Z1. Lowlight performance is decent, better than the LG G2 but worse than the HTC One, it's just you cannot rely on Superior Auto mode to get you the best pics, usually they end up very noisy.
In daylight there is no contest, the Z1 is one of the best out there. 90% of the time Superior auto does the job well. The other 10% of time there is overexposure or noise but then you can use manual or try again and it should come out okay. Low light is tricky.
If you want a camera that 'just works' I would suggest looking at the HTC One or LG G2. However, if you are willing to spend a bit of time to explore the camera's features and functions you will love the Z1. It's definitely the most fun camera phone to use. Don't get me wrong, it's not 'bad', it's just not as good as it could be. Also, the viewfinder is one of the smoothest I've used. 60fps of awesome.
The thing about the Z1 is that is one of the best 'allround' phones. You get a premium feeling, waterproof body with the fastest processor available and an extremely good camera. There's almost nothing like it. The iPhone 5S and HTC One are probably the only other ones that can compete with the all-roundedness. The LG G2 is really good as well but IMO has a horrible, cheap looking and feeling body. For me looks matter as much as the internals because I have the phone on me at all times and is a part of me, so I want it to reflect who I am. The Z1's sharp looks do just that .
Hopefully KitKat will stabilize superior auto and make it better because it's infuriating having poor software when you have unbeatable hardware.
I will have to say that while the Camera software disappoints it really isn't that bad at all..
As far as low light pics are concerned, for me superior auto does the job well enough..and of course low light photos have the element of noise as on any camera phone but don't let it bother you too much. You will just have to compare for yourself lowlight photos between the G2 and the Z1 to see if its up to your expectations.

The night sky shot you took with the 1020 has a shutter delay of 4s.
Z1 has a max shutter delay in night mode of 0.8s. This is the best you have currently with android. Also the Z1 has a 2.0 aperture to the 1020's 2.2. So about 25% larger.
bear in mind the nokia's can go as slow as 4s shutter delay because WP8 allows it. So even mid range WP8 phones with nokia camera app can get the 4s shutter delay. Android at this time does not even if the hardware can support it. I see no reason why this cannot be done in the future with android if mid range WP8 phones presently allow such low shutter delay. It's an OS limitation. Another limitation with android is its not possible to manually set shutter speed or do any manual focus unlike with WP8. This limits to a certain extent or makes it harder than it would have been been with say Nokia camera.
Whereas the slowest shutter delay with the G2, note3, N5 or S4 is around 1/8s (6x faster than 0.8). What they then do is take a HDR. They cheat. This means a relatively stable hand held low light shot but if an even slower shutter speed is required then you cannot do it. Has the low light video improved on the G2 since ? as the video from examples i'd seen earlier was mostly not usable.
i have a g2, ordered z1s, z1s is beatiful phone, liked the screen and mostly everything, little snapier then g2, for some reason z1s felt a little big, battery life i was not impressed, on the first charge, 15 min screen time and down 6%, comparing to g2 where you will loose 2% tops, great phone but going back to g2, will wait for somerhing else with better cam then g2

Just as a side note, the LG G2 DOES have manual focus where you can move a slider (sorta like the 1020) to focus on things.
Thank you all for the opinions. I'll have to get hands on with it I think to really get a feel for it but I'm really leaning towards it. I'd get the HTC One again in a heartbeat if it had higher MP to actually have details in the photos
Check out this video mate:
The pictures were taken on the initial software release, the software has slightly improved since then but it should gives you a good idea on how well the camera perfomes.

I only wish the screen was better. It's not bad by any means but due to poor viewing angles the experience is not on par with other devices (oppo find 5 etc)

I had a G2 and while I liked it I decided to not keep it. Just got my Z1s on Monday and was very impressed with the handful of shots I took, and find I like the Z1s all-around more than I did the G2: better design, better android skin, better battery life & performance (and the G2 was no slouch in either of those two areas), and at least based on first impressions better camera.
I am exchanging my Z1s because of some difficulty getting it to acknowledge long press while holding the phone (started a thread on that), but other than that was very happy with it and am looking forward to getting my replacement.
Any opinions on the battery life? I know the G2 and Z1 and the same sized battery and so far I've had the G2 off of charger for 6 hours and it's only at 91%. I've made some phone calls, checked emails, sent hangout messages through out the day. Connected to WIFI and 4G. It's fantastic
Battery life is not G2 good but it's still excellent. I usually get 6-8 hours screentime on, which is much better than most phones out there.
Tough decision for me, sell my G2 and payoff my EIP or keep it and sell the Z1S and profit a bit and wait for something else.

Me also swapped the htc one with the z1
reason: Purple tint camera and very long time focusing during night and mostly out of focus
how do i compare : Z1 blew away Htc faster lock never out of focus and Better lowlight
you can see in the sets both taken with htc and z1 ... Just to mention i never used Superior Auto i always use manual @all auto .. except if i want to capture a night landscape or scene with longer exposure i choose Night Mode from scenes and rest my arm on somethings

Wow! Those are fantastic! Thank you
I've had a play with a G2 and it's a cracking handset, but not a patch on the Z1 in terms of the on screen user experience, the LG skin looks too much like Touchwiz, which is hideous. The camera rocks, all round anyway, no phone camera I've ever come across actually performs perfectly, but the Z1 comes close.

The Z1 is really the best camera in an Android phone. The flash sucks, specially compared to the 1020's (and the 808's, still the best camera phone by a huge margin) xenon, of course; but it's bad for a LED. However, its low light, non-flash performance is way above the rest of the pack. More comparable to the 1020's non-flash pics than to the G2's. You will also have the benefit of some lossless zoom. As a camera, it's definitely an upgrade over the S3/One/G2, and a clear downgrade all around from the 1020.
This is an interesting comparison of the Z1 with Nokia's last few cameraphones:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/18845_Smartphone_camera_shootout_the.php
Note that no non-Nokia phone had ever beaten the N8 on that site. But I'd suggest you to rate the pictures by yourself. Assign points to each, then assign a factor of importance to each category, and sum up the scores (multiplied by the importance of each category). You may come to a different conclusion than Steve.
Another interesting data point is this:
http://connect.dpreview.com/post/44...1-vs-nokia1020-vs-lgg2-vs-samsunggalaxys4zoom
Which includes a direct comparison between the Z1 and your previous two phones. I suggest the same approach, assigning your own scores and importances to come to your own conclusion.

Yes, it's WAY better. I don't have the shots with me, but when we went on vacations, my Z1's pictures were always better than my wife's 5S's. The Z1 focuses better (and faster), isn't as noisy, and exposes much better on low light. Also, the 5S has an annoying tendency of keeping the flash on for 1-2 seconds while it focuses, while the Z1 does it way faster; that much time with the LED on makes the subjects uncomfortable, and spoils the images. Whenever we took pictures of the same scene on both phones, mine were better (so much better that most of hers were instantly deleted). I usually don't shoot videos, so I can't comment on video quality.

The camera is very good, it takes some take outstanding photos. As the other person pointed out you can check the online reviews, and we have a photo thread in the general section.
I think both cameras are AMAZING! Ive went through s6 edge plus..iphone 6s plus..lg v10..and now nexus 6p. Front camera is really good and rear is amazing! I was bummed about no OIS+ but i havent had a problem and there is video stabilization i guess.
Excellent rear camera for sure! HDR+, Burst, etc.
Nexii cams used to be garbage, for sure, but that is NOT the case now.
Sure, the 6p might not have the best cam, but it's a solid competitor with everything available in a phone right now.
The camera is excellent for both photos and video in my experience. I'm very happy I got away from Samsung. Highly recommended.

Good apart from lack of OIS.
The camera is amazing. Detail, auto focus, HDR+, video is all amazing. But the 2 most impressive things to me by far are the low light photos and the zoom. Granted I'm coming from an s4, but the zoom is actually usable on this phone. The noose is minimal, focus is still pretty good. I was taking among pictures in a dark concert, zoomed in, no flash and they came out extremely well. You won't be disappointed.

I've heard too many negative reviews about the camera and that it can be a deal breaker..so which camera is better iphone 6's camera or the axon 7's camera?
Bought the phone because previous one was stolen few days before I went traveling in China. Been more than happy with the pictures it takes. Panorama is cool too. It struggled with low light, but it improving noticably with every update.
Uploaded a few pics from a national park in China for you. You be the judge. All pics were made with auto mode.

I have to say though. The iPhone costs $300 more. If you care so much go for the Galaxy S7 for camera (and Android)
Actually not that bad
I remember hearing tons of negative reviews on the camera and being worried that it wasn't going to be that good but after using the phone for about a week I can honestly say the camera is pretty good. It does struggle a bit in low light, though but that's simply because of the amount of megapixels. In my opinion, some reviewers are just a bit picky

I'm coming from a Nexus 6P and the Axon 7 camera just doesn't compare, especially in low light. The 6P had a great camera. That being said, since B27 came out things have improved noticeably and while the camera still isn't ad good as the 6P, it's more usable now and does produce decent enough shots in low and pretty good ones in good light.

Low light scenes are very challenging for the camera. ZTE really need to improve the HDR processing, where it can't touch 2015's Nexus phones and where it trails the much cheaper Honor 7.
There's not much sun where I am and I'm really noticing the difference.
You can certainly get better-looking results by playing with white balance in manual mode but that won't help you if you want to snap a darker foreground without blowing out all the background detail - a trick the Nexus phones' HDR+ excels at. I know they are deadly slow but I'd be happy to put up with much longer exposure times if it meant better pictures.
Could you please provide some selfie snaps as I'm kindda of a selfie guy?
Also I currently have the iPhone 5 so if the axon's camera is worse than the iphone 5 I might go with the oneplus 3 even though I hate its 1080p screen

At least where I live?
Could someone Post some selfies?
Hey all,
I received my LG G6 today, and I loved it. Until I turn on the camera. OMG. Before I had a Nexus 6P, I do not know if it is the Nexus that was exceptionally good or the LG G6 which is exceptionally bad, but I am overly disappointed.
What the hell is this camera quality on the G6? The only interesting thing is the wide angle. But it looks like all the pictures are smoothed out. And I'm not talking about the front-facing camera ... The 2013 flagship were doing better ...
On snapchat it's even worse. The app uses the ratio 18: 9, is made of 2.1 MPX photos with the front camera. And we can not fix it.
Is anyone now if it's the sensors who are completely ****ting where if it's optimizing and working the photo by software that destroys everything?
What is the best way to fix the snapchat quality?
THX
Not sure what the problem is for you guys. I'm very satisfied with the camera quality on my G6. Coming from the G5, I was a bit hesitant after reading reviews, but I have no complaints.
talk to snapchat. their POS software developers are to blame, not the phone. Android snapchat takes a screenshot of your phone as a "picture"

This. Snapchat is a useless pile of do do software which unless you are under 16 you shouldn't even be using lol.
As for normal rear facing photos the quality trumps my S8+ as I now have both phones and the G6 photos are absolutely top drawer.

Wow I never knew that, that's just terrible. I know the quality isn't great, but I had no idea that was the process the app takes.

I went into a store today to play a bit with the LG G6's camera and was also very very disappointed. The light wasn't too good, and only artificial light was available, I took a few shots of the label describing the phone from a distance of about 30cm with both the G6's f/1.8 OIS lens and my 4-year-old Xperia ZR. I set both of the phones' cameras to the highest resolution setting available, took a few shots making sure that the focus worked well, and then zoomed in on both to compare the photos side-by-side. The quality of the G6 photos was horrible, when I zoomed in it looked like really bad compression artefacts. I couldn't find any settings for picture quality, and the guy working there was trying to convince me that switching to 16:9 mode would improve quality, because "it's better". Right! (He also tried to convince me that the quality wasn't good, because it was only 13MP instead of 20MP (or more) like in other phones. I thanked him for his advice and left )
Based on the low-light photo comparison available on gsmarena I was very positively surprised by the picture quality of the G6 and was actually going to get it, yet it seems I've drastically changed my mind after this single experience.
Was I doing something wrong? Are there actually some hidden settings where you can adjust the compression quality like in other phones? I'd love to give it yet another try, if it makes any sense at all that is.
Other phones with compression quality settings ?
Which for example ?

The G6 tends to focus relatively slowly in low light. Also the low light photos tend to be a little noisy and have a white balance shifted a little to the red.
G6 IQ is really nice actually, Sony processing is easily the worst but see here, I think its pretty decent.

I made a video on how to increase your snap score. Hope you enjoy it!
Try cleaning the lens first
The biggest issue in my mind is the inconsistency in performance. Under the same conditions of good light, in auto mode, I'll get either a soft dull photo or a sharp and bright one. Manual mode gives a little more consistent results-- my best outdoor shots are taken with -1-1.5 EV, then brightened post processing. Low light photos are pretty crappy overall-- pretty much like snapshots taken on flipphones from 10 years ago.
Its disappointing that I can't dependably get a great photo right "out of the box" (like you can with Samsung's S series) and that I have to fiddle with settings or mess around with modded Gcam software.
I agree that LG could have chosen a better sensor for their flagship phone, or fixed their processing algorithm.
Maybe this is one reason that Samsung has beat LG so badly in sales.
I think we keep coming back for this, but as far as i can say:
LG G6`s camera is pretty good, but tends to have problems with oversharpening, in the dark the pictures tend to looks too noisy, but using google camera app with G6 for low light conditions really does wonders.
About snapchat, as somebody mentioned, snapchat really takes a screen from camera preview, for most the part, the snaps were a so so ok, but after recent updates i also noticed, that front camera in snap has become significantly worse, and also the back cam seems a bit choppy too, so it sure has something to do on their side.
I know I'm late but I also have a G6 and found out how to fix the problem with the camera quality. Snapchat, however will still be as terrible as it is due to the developers trying to make snapchat compatible with all androids using a single app on the Google Play store (smarter if they broke the apps into different phone types likes Samsung and LG). Open up your camera app, click on the cog/settings icon. Change the photo size to 4:3 (13MP) or (5MP) for both front and back facing camera views. For video resolution, change it to FHD 16:9 (60fps) for the back facing and FHD 16:9 for front facing. Hopefully I wasn't too late.

Unfortunately, I have resell my G6 for that bug. I bought the S8+, it was better but not good. It's due to 18:9 ratio, who seems uncompatible with snapchat. There is the same problem on One Plus 5T, and on all phone who have a 18:9 ratio.
For this reason, I have resell my S8+ and then buy the Pixel XL.
I didn't find any solution for any concerned device. I think we have to wait Snapchat fix.
Snapchat will normally be full rebuild for android on january. I hope it will fix it.

Use a ported version of Google camera even tho in my opinion the stock is still very good, and nothing will fix the Snapchat camera til they update it optimised for lg g6

Yep, I did. I'm coming from Nexus 6P, and the LG G6 caméra, except Wide angle, was bad. S8+ camera was good, except the 18:9 ratio who's doing **** on snapchat and all photo apps ( instagram, messenger,etc..).
But I've broken the screen, so I've looked fort the best camera on 16:9 ratio : The Pixel XL. As good as the S8+ for rear, and not ****in zoomed and blurred front facing camera.
I come from LG G4 and the only reason to buy this phone was the camera for me and boy do I hate the goddamn camera on this phone! I loathe both the Rear and Front camera shots. I hate that their image processing is terrible. Their implementation of noise reduction algorithm is horrible for the front camera, and the lack of OIS doesn't help with the shots.
So I guess I am stuck with using pro mode - clicking RAW and processing just to avoid their horrible software implementation.
I just want to get rid of this phone or I prolly will end up using this as a backup phone just for its dash charging ! That is the only thing good thing about this device.

I don't have any pictures to compare with OP5 cos the camera is so horrendous !
At this stage of the phone being released 3 months ago you should've already known about the camera 'qualities' from reviews?!
Dont you go for reviews prior to purchasing anything.
The camera isnt that bad, has got better with updates, and here at XDA, smartphones are a lot more than just a camera device.
you bought the phone because of the camera but didn't do enough research for it.
Most people buy this phone because of the Google stock feeling or the overall performance and dev support of the phone.
If you bought it just for the camera might aswel return it ^.^
Agreed with the users that have replied thus far. If you read enough reviews you would know the camera didn't live up to its hype post launch. That's not to say it's a bad camera by any means, but it should have given you a better idea of whether or not this device is for you.
If your primary purchasing factor is the camera, the Google Pixel or Galaxy S8 would have been better options.
Personally I don't find the camera to be that bad, it's really solid in good lighting as well, but to each their own!
The front camera is one of the better ones I've used, and the rear camera isn't "bad" (though could be better).

Who buys a phone for its camera? Its not a primary feature of any phone seeing how its so small it will never receive optimal amounts of light or have a large enough lens to get quality shots at all in any circumstances. Buy a phone for software not hardware. If hardware is nice consider it a bonus. A really good camera is only about 150 dollars. Just carry a nikon around.
Actually, OnePlus heavily marketed the camera; even making a note of it on the sides of the box. It's no surprise at least some people would have bought this thinking the camera was top-notch.

a senior member on xda and no research before purchase
why don't you go an get this https://www.ebay.com/p/LG-G4-H815-32GB-Metallic-Gray-Unlocked-Smartphone/218349514
It's a SMARTPHONE camera. It's never going to replace a DSLR. Its actually a good camera. I don't have a problem with the quality at all (though I'm an enthusiast Photographer and know that no phone camera will like a DSLR). Most of the reviews flame the camera as much worse then it really is. That being said... It's totally the OP's fault for there are 50 or more YouTube video reviews on the camera.
To say it's the worst phone you've bought... lol you sound bitter as this phone is the fastest, smoothest phone out there with the best battery and fastest charging phone out there. It's got a very good display, but not the best. I think that is really the only area this phone lags behind flagships... the display.
Im finding it about on par with my I7, slightly worse in low light but focuses much faster.
Worse than my note 8, better than my XZp
It's like the only device that had day 1 reviews from tons of known reviewers so you had all the time in the world to research about the product you're buying and yet you didn't. Yeah camera is crap compared to other flagships, we don't care, move along.
I don't mind the camera, it's decent.
How can you be "extremely disappointed" ?
I receive my OP5 about a week ago and is by far the best smartphone I ever had in term of photos.
I'm coming from a Galaxy S6 how he's a "one of the best photos taker". He has a better camera that the LG G4 if you read the reviews. The best part it's that I think the S6 has a decent rear camera and a awful front camera who made your skin like a doll. Do you know why ? Because Samsung use a simple trick to avoid the noise in the photos : blur all the picture in low light and we can tell that our phones are really good in low light. I can tell you that this phone is really, but really better that my previous S6.
But I have compared with a S7 too (the S8 have the same lens and is considered one of the best photos takers of the market) and a iPhone 6s. He out-performed well all this phones. I don't even talk about the front camera who is simply the best in the market.
The only issue with the rear camera is in the low light, but this can be fixed with the Pro mode or the Google Camera modded with HDR+.
